Hi guys ! I hope Im posting this on the right section, anyway posting this on behalf of my friend,
He dropped his Nexus ( still under warranty) into a toilet handbasin which has water in it . He turned it off and took out the battery and cover to let the phone to dry overnight. His speakers weren't working at first , but after a few days, they were fine.
The problem is :
i)Charging is inconsistent now. Phone doesn't charge even it is plugged in , sometimes it does. He have to keep on trying till it says charging AC)
ii)Phone hangs A LOT
iii)Reboot more than usual
iv) Shorter battery life
Question :
i) He wants to return it to Vodafone Australia but not sure if they know the phone had drop into water? Is there a way to know?
ii) Is there a way to fix any of the problem?
iii)(For australians in melbourne) If he can't return it to vodafone, any good service center to recommend?

ii. Try soak in rice overnight. Should be done after the drop. Anyway u can always try. It works on my Nokia .Dont know if it work on smartphone.

Hey thanks ! kind of been a week already . Think it still may work?
Chances are permanent damage have been done.
Put it in silica gel next time, i think it absorb water better, but remember to bake it first before using it.

Think he can return the phone without getting caught? I heard there's a red tape some sort of water indicator inside the phone. Is that true?
Yes there is. If you take the battery out, at the top of the 'slot' that the battery rests in theres a little white piece of "tape", that normally has just X's on it. Not sure what it changes to if it gets wet, but thats how they would tell.

Notice the square XXXX inside the phone. Its on the right frame just above the place where the battery is.
My friend checked his, the indicator still okay! sent back to vodafone!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but 99% of the time that indicator is white and BECOMES red when there's water damage. As in, red Xs means water damage.
Edit: After thinking about it and using a bit of common sense, yeah no - red Xs has to mean water damage. I also checked my own phone (with no damage) and, as expected, white indicators. I have the Sprint version so maybe some small, tiny chance it's changed, but neither of mine are X'd and I bought it brand new.
Editagain: Did some research. Apparently my indicators are reverse to everyone else's, but they could still deduce that the problem is water damage - it's not too hard to determine for someone with a bit of hardware experience. I wouldn't get too excited.

Yo guys!
I just was on vacation and my defy fell in the swimming pool.
So i got it out and it still worked only a red led appeared. After 10 minutes the screen turned off. So i put my defy in rise but it isn't working. Now when I am back I opened my defy and put it in a dry place but when I put the battery back the screen wont start up and I am getting a red light. Still I am 100% sure the motherboard works fine because it starts up and I see the 2nd init bootloader led flashing from blue to green. So does anybody know what I should clean or look at. Otherwise i will flash a stock froyo rom and do a cash wipe/factory reset and sent it to Motorola.

maybe check if your battery is not completely discharged accidentaly.
I have also heard that the drying process should last a day or more.

Yea I know but I will wait an other day. Maybe there are just some shortcuts why the screen isn't starting up because it doesn't look damaged at all.
It look like the device is partially damaged when it decided to jump into the pool..
You should had immediately pull out the battery and check throughout of water getting in the device, and let it dry first before your attempting to reboot it.

Funny thing is I did. It was dry but after some minutes vapor appeared between the screen and the screen case. then the same vapor appeared by the camera and ... screen turns off.

Officially (according to IP67) the defy is water resistant up to 1 meteres do not know how deep the pool was? If you do not have warranty anymore you could open it up and let it dry in seperate parts. But if there is vapour under the screen and camera lens i'm affraid more damage is done....

I did it...
Today i took my defy for a little swim, took it under no more than 10 inches of water, pool, while recording a video to see how it goes, when i got it out after 40 secs, the pone kept recording but when i touch to stop recording the phone started vibrating like if i was pressing any of buttons (home, menu, back and search) and then froze i got scared so i pulled the battery and check for water, but i saw that the lens got moisture so i quickly took it to a bowl with uncook rice and left it there for 3 hours. i then checked it and all the moisture was gone.
When i turned it on it booted like if it didn't had any OS so i left it alone and a while later it loaded fine, but then i noticed the moisture was back on the lens cover, took it back to a new bowl with rice, and it has been there for another 3 hours now but the moisture is showing in te screen also.
What do you guys recomend me to do?
Does the waranty should cover any damage?
P.S: sorry for such a long "Answer" to the thread, but i'm worried and didn't want to spam by opening a new one.

mine allso got wet, and seems that now work's fine but it has no backlight to the lcd and to the soft keys. anybody solved this problem? thx!

Don't thing Rice is going to do more then a paper towel... It doesn't suck any liquid out of gaps or anything. You can try the little ball's that come with clothing. They suck the water out the air so that the water in the phone can vaporize in the air.
But the one's that come with the things you buy will most likely already be saturated.
The best way is to use rubbing alcohol (as high percentage as possible). The alcohol displaces the water but does vaporizes is normal conditions. So you can just submerge your phone in alcohol (with no battery, sim and sd-card ofc. and best only the logic board) and let it dry for some time. This before you try to put it on. This also cleans out most of the salt and sand as this damages you board over time.
So yesterday me and my friends went near a lake and had a little bit of alcohol,so i fell into the water with the phone in my pocket turned of.
But later when the phone dried,i turned it on and it was all working but the screen brightnes is not adjustable,now can anibody advise me what to do
First of all that's funny! Silly things happen when we are drunk.
I suggest you fully dry your phone out put it in a sack of rice for a few days then see what happens.

It's highly unlikely you managed to get it completely dry in 1 day.
Stick it in a bag of rice for 24 hours and hope for the best.

You could try a factory reset, but strange things happen from water damage.
My old Sony Ericsson worked fine, except for the fact (after I dropped it in a pan of gravy) that the gsm aerial only had a weak signal. Everything else was normal..
Could try silica gel, but there could be corrosion (you can't always even see the corrosion) from minerals/deposits in the water, which is causing a short circuit somewhere, causing the problem.
Unfortunately any water damage automatically (to the repair centers at least) means it's BER (beyond economical repair) so if you can't fix it from it drying out (ideally give it at least 3 days or even more in the rice or silica gel) the only option really is to buy a new one, or claim on insurance if you have cover.

THx for the answer,but unfortunately this phone dosent have a warranty,i think im just gonna buy the screen and then im gonna send it to my nearest reapir center,and yes i can see dried up water under the screen.
i know the feeling! my dhd got wet yesterday in the rain argh! even the battery indicator shows no water damage (to that at least) yet the screen is buggered lol. looks like its been smashed in a way. got it in a tub of rice currently.. hoping it might dry out.
glad it wasnt my hox it happened to anyway

the review says its not original. i'd steer clear personally.
I was washing my face in the morning and the phone was near the sink. When I was leaving the washroom I tried to grab the phone and it slipped through my hands and went inside the toilet. I grabbed it within 2 seconds and gave it a quick dry with towel and turned off. Took out the battery and spen and put it in a rice.
I owned sgs1 and sgs2 for years and no such thing happened but this 1 month old phone just went swimming. Damn!
It has been 24h so far and I will wait another day to try to turn it on. I hope nothing is damaged. I am pretty sure it will work but afraid that something might be damaged such as camera, speaker, vibration or any other small thing. I really don't have any tolerance to have any kind of damage. Hope it will recover just fine. I will let you know tomorrow.
one quick question though, should I close and seal the rice bag tightly or let it aerate?
If I remember correctly it's recommended to place the phone in a bag with uncooked rice. It's suppose to help remove moisture.
You will probably be ok, seeing as you got it out so quickly. The same thing happened to my old Galaxy S2 about a year or two ago and it still working just fine.
My current rule is LID DOWN.
You dont have to seal it as long as its dried well and just let the rice soak up as much moisture as it could. Check the liquid damage indicator (circle litmus paper located just above sim tray) and check if pink or white. Also check the litmus paper on your battery as well since it could also be the battery that may be the problem. I would also highly suggest to go to your nearest Att device support center so they can determine if its your battery or your phone (free service) so you wont have to waste money buying a battery. If they still cant turn it on with another battery then your phone may be kaput.

I also remember quickly seeing something pink near the sim tray and seemed odd to me but I don't know what it that means? When its pink does it mean it took water? which color it should be on a new phone? Also if that indicator changes color is it gonna turn to its original color when its dried?

Yes that's the liquid damage indicator. If moisture gets in contact with that litmus paper, it'll turn pink and that'll be an indicator for the service technicians or warranty services to determine if it's out of warranty. On new phones, the litmus paper will stay white and won't ever turn back to white once it has been in contact with water. Since now that you know it's pink, it doesn't always mean or show how much your phone has been affected by water and that's why I suggested that you take it up with the AT&T Device Support Center to see if they can at least replace the battery (if that works).
Go to this website to check where the nearest location is (www.att.com/dsc). Otherwise, you can call Warranty Services (operated by AT&T as well) through 1-800-801-1101. Tell them your problem that it can't turn on and ask them if they can send you a replacement battery via mail (being that you're still "under warranty") but DO NOT tell them that you have water damage, otherwise they may notate it on your account and may not send you a replacement battery. If you do decide to go to these centers, granted they still might notate it if it's water damage but they'll still try to help you by trying to replace a battery either onsite or expediting the shipment of the battery via mail (1-2 business days).

I think you misunderstood me. My phone was working when I turned off to dry it and I still haven't turned it on yet. I will wait 48h total before I try to turn on again. I don't know yet if everything works.
Is it possible to send the phone to service so they can replace the indicator after they check everything works perfectly? is it even possible?
The thing that I don't understand when I remove the battery cover, back of the phone was dry. The indicator on battery is still white. I don't understand how it changed color so suddenly and the battery indicator didn't even tough it seemed dry...

I may have misunderstood, my apologies but like I said, if the device shows a pink on the litmus paper, your warranty has just been voided and no they cannot replace the indicator. If you send it in for replacement, you'll just be paying full price for the phone plus you'll get a refurbished unit (in my opinion, it's not worth it). It's better to just take it to those cell phone repair shops and see if they can repair the internals for a cheaper price but sometimes that isn't worth it as well. Just keep letting the rice soak as much moisture as it can and if it still turns on, more power to you. However, you still want to check the litmus paper near the contacts of the battery to make sure if it's white. If it's pink, the battery may be affected and can cause problems with either battery life or power issues (not being able to supply power efficiently to device and may cause it to restart or power on/off).

It's just the placement of the indicator that allows it to be more prone to contact with moisture and since the battery wasn't affected, it was probably just hiding well that it didn't make contact so you may not need to have your battery replaced. I'm just concerned about how your phone will function after it has been in contact with water so if you start seeing weird things happening on your phone, I suggest you start backing up all your information while it still works because over time, depending on the severity of the moisture exposure and if worse comes to worst, it may not turn on for you.
I've been experienced with these problems since I used to work at the AT&T device support center and I've heard a lot of people who came in with those problems and it does really suck to see their reaction when they know that they've lost all their data especially when we can't turn it on for them.

Had that happen to me also. If you heat the rice up in micro wave as it is placed in a sock it will be a lot more effective. I have used that method many time the heat will help pull moisture out. You Google it to about rice in a sock lol. Heat it up pretty warm put it in it let it sit and keep repeating. And for a safe measure on the day I was planning to boot it back up it sat in the sun for a fee hours and the damn thing was so hot it worried me. But kinda like with an old school distributer cap even though it looks dry its not. And I think the sun beating down on that screen for about 4-6 hours took all little patches of moisture out. And that is my method for when phones enjoy a swim lmao hope it helps

thanks. I tried as you said put rice in a sock and used it to heat up the rice bag. I also think will be more effective. I am also thinking if I force the water evaporate inside the phone so fast isn't gonna cause some condensation issues possibly condense on the screen? well I already did. big day is tomorrow...

No, the rice acts as a desiccant, it will pull all the moisture out of the air. The heat will help pull it out from under chips and other surface mount components.

This thread makes me wonder how many refurbished phones have been repaired and returned to use after immersion in someone's toilet.
Here is an update...
After keeping the phone in rice for 48h I turned it on for the first time today and so far everything works as normal.
I tested both cameras, sensors, spen, speaker. I only had a little buzz coming from the speaker but after blowing some air it turned to normal. no problems so far.

After keeping the phone in rice for 48h I turned it on for the first time today and so far everything works as normal.
I tested both cameras, sensors, spen, speaker. I only had a little buzz coming from the speaker but after blowing some air it turned to normal. no problems so far.

I have 3 s3's on my account. I have had intermittent problems with 1 of them lately. It would not charge. No matter what cords I used even swapping out the battery with another s3 this one phone would not charge. So for a day I just charged up my battery in one of the other s3's and swapped it back and forth. When plugged in it would show it was charging but it could sit all nite and % would go down. Well I was cleaning the battery connectors with a q-tip and some alcohol trying to figure out if maybe it was some sort of connection issue. In doing so I touched the water damage sticker with the qtip thats on the phone under battery. It slightly changed the color. I wasnt sure what it looked like before so I checked my other s3 and it had no sticker in that spot. Had the little square outline where it would go but no sticker. I purchased this phone brand new so I know it was simply not there to start. My question is this. Due to my problem with charging Samsung is covering the cost to send it in for repair/replace. I know it never had water damage and any hidden stickers inside the phone will back that up. But my worry is because of the slight change in color from q-tip alcohol would I be better off just removing it like my other s3? I know some people say that the removal of those stickers voids warranty but that would tick me off seeing how if I ever have a problem with my other one that never had the sticker they would void it.
EDIT: I should also add that after a day the phone started charging again fine. This has now happened 3 times. Will work fine for a few weeks then all sudden the no charge issue comes up again. Then going away on its own. I just dont want to keep going like this and have one day after warranty is up it not charge again.
my sprint gs3 also has no stickers.. can anyone verify what is up with this? is there more hidden ones in the phone itself????

Mine had the charging problem and I received a replacement free of charge. As for the water damage sticker idk how that's going to work for you. I will tell you this. When I took mine in they looked at it for 10 seconds and then just said we'll send your replacement in the mail but then again all techs are different

Today in the morning i put my tablet charging and a few minutes ago, where i pick up this happend.
The tablet in on fire when i pick her up, i mean, i can´t hold it in my hands because of the heat.

If it is not your fault, someone else is responsible. Such a damage does not occur without external force.

she was on while charging, after i take off the charger the tablet still work 100% ( i guess), but i turned off because was too hot.
The heat was coming from the place where you put the charger. ( i guess was a factory error in the charger and was heat too much, i don´t know)
I´m afraid in the moment i get the tablet to samsung they say that was me that dropped to the ground and broke the screen.
Either the battery expanded and broke the panel or something related to the battery. Im not sure if samsung will replace that.. How old is this tablet?
I would make sure to add a note (hand written message) when returning it to Samsung that you have included the charger and the cable for them to test and I would tape a note to the back of the tablet so they can't say they didn't see it and take pictures of the note taped to the tablet.
If you were charging it with the factory charger and the cable as per the instructions I would fight them to the end for a replacement!
That hole is obviously made by external forces. If it was caused by heat or battery expansion it wouldn't look like that. Either you smashed something onto it or someone else did.

You are wrong, the tablet was on my office when i put it on charge, then leave, nobody gets in the office ( i'm sure) and when i come back the tablet is like this...

If you are adamant that no one else could have man handled your tablet while you were out, the other possible explanation is that your tablet experienced some extreme temperature and had a pre existing weak point at that position (micro fractures can be invisible to the eye).
It is unlikely that your battery could have become hot enough to crack your screen without bursting into flames first, so the other extreme is more likely. Is there a chance that the ambient temperature of your office dropped to freezing or near freezing while you were away?

No one enter my office because i locked after leaving. And the temperature was always the same, ambient temperature. 10 to 15° celsius.
Most probable scenario is that someone physically damaged the unit since you did leave it unattended. Achems Razor will help cut to the truth.

But point well made. Pretty dang amazing damage. Almost looks like a small caliber bullet hole. Yikes! Hope the OP shares what eventually is the result.

I'm interested in buying this tablet which is how I've ended up here (new to the community).
Having some experience with lithium-polymer batteries from hobbies of mine, my first thought was 'what type of battery does it have?' Li-Po batteries have a tendency to expand and potentially catch alight if 'gone dodgy' or over-charged. The Galaxy Tab S uses a Lithium-Ion battery which it turns out can have similar behaviour.
This could well explain the state of the tablet (and the heat). It might not have caught alight with a standard charger, or you got to it before it did. Either way, good thing you got to it when you did!
I can't post any external links yet as I'm still too new, but googling "Lithium Ion battery expansion" and "explosion" shows some examples of what can happen to these batteries (although I don't believe this to be very common).
This type of expansion force from inside the unit would most likely burst the screen and I can only imagine that being pretty nasty, and possibly the cause of the state that your tablet was in.
I trust that you got it replaced through your warranty without any quibble?!..
