Hi there Nexus owners, I currently own a Nexus S, and I plan on switching to a Galaxy Nexus but I was wondering since the Sa Nexus camera is lacking in the numbers when it comes to megapixels, does anyone know of the possibilities of swapping the camera of an SII (8mp) with that of our phone?
My Nexus S takes good enough pictures at 5mp but I just want to justify the lack of a need for the SIII over the Nexus.
I found the back camera for an SII for sale here.

nice double post. i'll reply here too:
No. Its not going to happen. Seriously people?
Seriously. It's just one of those days. You know it had to happen with the influx of gnex flying out the door recently.

Sorry about the double post, I had to when I noticed the post right after mine stating "All Questions to Go into the Q&A Section".
So why do you think its not going to happen? Any insights?

Because you can't just take apart 2 phones and swap parts frankenstein style. Just because they're both phone cameras doesn't mean they're "plug and play". These things aren't desktop computers, their parts are not interchangeable.
If you think that the camera on the GNex is that bad (it actually isn't), and a phone camera is that important to you, don't buy the GNex.
Thanks for the input, I brought it up only because I know a fairly similar act was successfully pulled off with the Galaxy S and the Galaxy S 4G, with the front camera swap. Maybe someone with better knowledge of the internals can give some insight on what differences exist if there are. I dont mind getting the GNEX to be frank, way to much pros over the cons, but I can't wait to be able to swap out parts off a phone on the fly like a computer. Now thats going to be the best thing that happened to the phone industry after Android.

Phones have been closed proprietary hardware systems since the modern smartphone. They're getting more closed and proprietary as time goes on. If you want better performance, battery life, and design you need them to be closed, sealed devices.
Even laptops are going this way. If you wanna swap parts get a dekstop computer.

The Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S II camera modules are totally different. If the SII camera worked out of the box with the Galaxus' ISP (which is quite possible,) the connectors are completely different. It would require so much work that it just wouldn't be worth it by any stretch.
That and it probably wouldn't even fit inside the phone.

How many universal parts/standards do you see on the inside of phones? Even if parts were more universal your phone would be uglier than Frankenstein and look like a mummy with all the duct tape keeping it together so you have something usable. A lot of things would have to become standard before swapping parts in and out even becomes thinkable. Think when a thought pops happens upon your head.
let it be.
When i read threads like this or those "can i install Gingerbread on gnex? " i really think these are TROLLS trying to get people mad...
Makes no sense, you want a better camera? Get a nikkon camera... I dont even see the point on better cameras on a phone.. If i can take a picture to put a Face on my contact or to take any fast photo for a quick reference.. Im ok.. Now if I want really good pictures for a wedding, 15 years daughter party or any special moment.. Id hire a professional photographer.. Thats all about it
Ppl tends to be really stupid about this, like iphone fan Boys.. When they figured 4S its a piece of crap they only got left to say oh but the camera its awesome... Yeah?? Better than a nikkon 24mp / 300 photos per second / 2milles zoom 250gb internal memory 1 touch in screen per 300 photos?... I say go to hell

Thanks for ur inputs guys. That been said if you are a member of XDA then I will think you won't be one to comfortably accept what the manufacturer gave u as is, keep it in your pocket and feel satisfied, we are here to tweak, tinker and learn from these devices, some of us at least.
If no one challenged what manufacturers have handed down then there won't be a need for MIUI, Voodoo, Ezekeel etc. I was only looking to see the possibilities I am not an electronic head to know exactly what can be or cannot be done. But I sure can don't mind satisfying my curiosities by raising questions i am unsure about, so call me a troll if u want. "That don't faze me foo".

Even if possible, if. You got enough money to buy 2 phones just to swap cameras, or lets put it this way, the camera its so portant to you that you dont mind spending over 1k USD just to swap the camera and with the risk of damaging the 2 phones in the process (as you said "you are not an electronic head") so risk its even higher of messing all the things up.. And wasting 1k USD?? Ok thats your money its your problem but dont Think any decent person around here will lead you to that and as i said if the camera its so important, dude theres plenty devices out there with 8/12 mp cameras and you can always flash some stock/custom ICS room to that device.
So you can get your camera with ICS in a reasonable way and any1 could help you accomplish that

Don't forget the duct tape and jb-weld.
I still don't get why people are so worried with the GN's camera. I have both (GN & GS2) and can't tell from a glance "oh, this is the GN and this is the GS2" from looking at a picture.
- both are back illuminated sensors
- a 1920x1080 screen is 2 megapixels, most professional photographers say that 5 megapixels is more than enough, above is only useful if you *print* on large medias (eg. posters)
- both have the same sensor size
It is true that the GN had focus oddities and no image stabilization but this was fixed in 4.0.4. Don't forget that the GN has 2 CPUs (Cortex M3) dedicated solely to the camera subsystem. This is why there's instant shoot on that device.
Also consider that things change WAY too fast in this industry to develop standards. Intel can make a new CPU and ride on it for 2-3 years before they need to make a new one, even with AMD nipping at its heels. And when they make their CPU, they make it however they want, and the OEMs will build the form factor around it.
Smartphone companies do not have the same luxury. People want their sensor-laden connected supercomputers to fit comfortably in their hands, and they want it right now. If someone were to try to come up with a standard CPU, it would be obsolete before the ink dried on the standards page. Look how long it took them to agree on MicroUSB, and that's just a port.
Company: Here's your camera standard, the C5. Plug it into any board and you're good to go.
OEM: Only 8 megapixels? No backlight? Not good enough.
Company. OK, here's the C6.
Only 12 megapixels? NO CMOS sensor?
And on it goes.
ok I just ordered my nexus 7 16gb it will be 275 delivers with a 20$ Google play credit.
main reasons. ips display. and charges over usb those are my only gripes abou the a100 the display just wanst up to snuff compared to my original ipad. i bought ti see if i preferred android to apple and i stopped using my ipad completely.
is my a100 worth anything now-- rooted cwm unlooked loader. 32 gb card
Well with the Nexus 7 available for pre order I don't see our used A100's selling anywhere close to $200.

They can be had locally for 180-200 without an SD card or any extras, however I see that dropping VERY fast when the nexus 7 actually releases. If you're planning on selling it, put it up NOW, and ask for 200, and take the first offer that comes close, say 180.
Plus its starting to become known what issues they have, including faulty EMMC hardware that will brick itself for no real reason.
I've been considering selling mine, but we've been through alot together, not sure I want to let it go, and if I did, what I would replace it with...
I'm considering this too. The nexus 7 seems like a sweeter deal, having Jelly Bean, a better CPU and GPU, for $199. I would be happy to sell for about $150 and then just spend $50 for the nexus. Doesn't seem like a bad deal.
Our iconia doesn't have the great screen either, and I would like a better screen...
The only downside with the Nexus 7 is it doesn't have the external SD slot. You won't be able to store much on the 8GB internal storage. The OS itself with apps will take about 2GB leaving with 6GB. A decent game's data will take up 1GB to 2GB. The storage gets drained pretty quickly.
I pre-ordered the Nexus 7 as well but I'm not even going to consider selling my A100. The A100 is the tablet I use around the house or when I go outside, but with the Nexus 7, the A100 will just replace my desktop table's tablet which is my Viewsonic G Tablet. I'll probably just give the G Tablet to my parents or something

I was lurking the forums because I'm debating finding a cheap Iconia instead of getting a Nexus 7 (HDMI and expandable memory would be awesome for emulators and hd video), but I feel I should tell you that the Nexus 7 does NOT support storage devices OTG. The conclusion we came to on reddit is that FAT32 requires a license to Microsoft and they didn't want to pay it for whatever reason, I don't know if that's something you could work around or not with a good dev community. Same with MHL (which is unsupported out of the box), I've heard a decent dev community could get it working but after hearing the same about the Xperia Play, I'm not counting on it.

And why is otg limited to fat32? I don't recall ever saying fat32 either, but I could always be wrong about this, so don't take the wrong way, just wondering why it would require only fat32. And I'm sorry, but anything out of Reddit I take with a grain of salt.

Nexus 7 was looking pretty good compared to the A100. Lighter weight (important to me as an ebook reader), better display and longer battery life.
However, the lack of microSD slot is an issue because I like carrying around a lot of media and don't want some dongle hanging off the tablet. And I just bought a 27" monitor that has dual HDMI and it looks great connected to the A100, something else the Nexus can't do. (I also sometimes connect the A100 to the 50" flat screen via HDMI.)
Instead of paying $50 more for an extra 8gb of internal storage, I'd pay that to get my microSD slot and HDMI out back. I would also miss things like a real rotation lock button, but that one is not the deal-breaker the others are.
So no trade-in for me yet. And if I'm going to add a second tablet for other purposes, it would more likely just be a bigger one. Like an iPad.
Of course, if I didn't already own an A100, the Nexus 7 does look like the hottest deal on the market. This month.
That's pretty much where I stand now. The a100 has its strong points, the nexus 7 also has its strong points. If I didn't already have my a100 I would probably get the nexus. I was considering selling the a100 to maybe get a nexus, however I've decided its not worth it for the nexus. If I'm going to unload the a100 it'll be for a 10", maybe the a500 or something like that. If I come across a great deal and get the nexus I'll give the a100 to the wife lol. Same way my mom has a modded kindle fire.

It's been confirmed to work, only after rooting, and only for transferring files. So you can't watch videos stored on the card, nut you can move them and watch them from the internal storage. Not sure about music and photos.
The android community on Reddit is a little better than you're implying. A lot of xda members use it too, actually. It's the source for a lot of news and initial discussion of that news too. It's a pretty decent community if you can get past preconceived notions of Reddit as a whole.

FYI About A100 Prices Dropping
Just got a notice from eBay that A100 8G (on HC - NOT on ICS) is now available for $140+ free shipping. It is manufacturer refurbished.
I am tempted to buy for kids.
my acer a100 is being sold for $100 to my brother the day my nexus 7 arrives, I have the 16gb version on pre-order. the screen upgrade was the reason for the move also since the nexus is thinner I should be able to mount it in a dockable position in the car where the acer was mounted behind the stereo bezel.
As of now, I am likely to be moving on to the Nexus 7 as well.
I was holding out. My reason: The Nexus 7 does not have a microSD slot, and I really like using my 64 GB microSD cards in my devices.
This rationale kept me in the A100 camp-- until my A100 corrupted its 64 GB microsd card!
To me, selling stuff is a headache. So, I'll likely just give my A100 & accessories away. I don't know any forum members personally, and don't know if any are in my area. So, some kid who does something that shows he/she has a good head on their shoulders, or some older person who expresses a desire to stay up with the times will just get an A100 handed to them.
Should I leave this forum, thanks a lot to everyone here.

As the title says, I've started a petition to Google to include memory card slots on future nexus devices and to encourage other manufactures to do the same. Please check it out and sign the petition.
Also, if a wise and powerful mod saw fit, I think this could be worth a sticky.

My biggest problem is that I just don't see the reason not to have it. Other than the iPhone, pretty much every smartphone has had some kind of memory slot for years until recently. Having it is cheap and takes up very little space. Why limit users? Why not allow them flexibility?

Why complicate things with an extra slot? Why slow things down with external storage? Why? It's not only easier for developers, but for consumers too. You never have to worry...its just there. You don't have to go "Well, VZW only gave me a 2GB SD lets go spend another $30 on a 64GB"...its just there and most consumers need that cause most consumers are, sorry, dumb.

I'm sorry, but that post is just dumb. (Not you, your post.) How can it complicate things?(*That's a dumb statement.*) I think even the older generation knows what a sdcard is and how to use it in a mobile device, camera, etc.. so I know the younger generation knows. What can be complicated to some, is hooking up your phone up to the computer and browsing through all of those folders trying to find where their pictures are saved. (*Most wouldn't look in the DCIM folder.*) Why slow things down? I spent an extra hour or so at the Verizon store waiting for them to transfer all of my pics, songs, etc...off of my sdcard, when it could have taken me 2 minutes to the transfer the sdcard from my old phone to this one. (*Again, dumb statement.*) I guarantee you most people are using the same 16/32 sdcard they've had from a previous phone and they either sell or put the new one they get with a new phone away for storage. Not to mention how APPS2SD has saved plenty of people space on their internal memory and whatever other benefits that comes from that. Sorry, but I just can't let you call me a dumb consumer because I want options. If you ask me, a dumb consumer is one who doesn't want more options.
Guys, there really is no reason to debate or argue this. Either you support it or you don't. If you do, sign the petition, like the page, and post something positive.
If you don't, please just leave well enough alone (like I said in the original post).
You could just buy a phone that does have an SD card slot. They don't have a gun to your head. Google is moving away from expandable storage.
I don't think Google plan to add micro SD cards in the future as we head towards a cloud based storage system in the future, so if you want an SD card, you'll most likely have to buy a non nexus device, this rant won't do anything much
I don't know if it's that people don't read or if my expectations are just to high. *sigh*

No negativity here just opinion. I think manufactures should just include more built in storage. Flash memory is way faster than sdcards and I think that if there more of it, space would stop being an issue.

2. That's only valid if I have a high speed connection everywhere and unlimited use of it.

The only problem with this is that, the more the storage, the more the price of the phone. Imagine how much a 64 GB phone or tablet is going to be. I'm pretty sure at some point buying a 64GB sdcard would be cheaper. Plus, when you spend more money on that new 64 GB device that you want, now you have to spend all of that time saving it to the cloud or transferring it from the old device to the new one. Now when your space in the clouds begin to get to full, you now have to spend a monthly/yearly fee for more space. Sorry, but I don't see the benefits.

Let's make a port of this for our T989 and show'em our phone still rules!
Um.. what dimension are you living in? The Nexus 4 obliterates our phone in every conceivable way. Even with a non removable battery, missing SD slot and glass back. Wake up buddy.

you mean its faster and bigger right?
because its a complete POS, without a battery or expandable storage..
Let me get this straight.. Any phone that doesn't give you expandable storage options, is complete GARBAGE!!
Show me 1 single camera out there RIGHT NOW, that has a permanent battery built into it.
Todays phones have cameras that are amazing, amazing enough where people use them for there main camera!Going to disney world for the day with the kids? Maybe Bush Gardens ?? Or the tons of other places where charging your phone simply isn't an option!
Personally, I can live without it, although having no option to easily switch out a battery, no expandable storage is completely junk!!
So yea, I will take you on, our phone BLOWS away the new nexus 4 by a mile! I wouldn't care if you could put it in your pants and it performed.... well you know.
bottom line, this is why the Iphone is a POS in my opinion and many others, nexus 4 trying to copy it, PATHETIC !!

Actually, you're wrong. These are mobile phones not meant to be replacements for other devices that perform their main functions much better than our phones. Even the cheapest point and shoots take much better pictures and video than the best smartphone. Go look at the Nexus 4 forums. People are getting much better battery life with their built in batteries than our phone with an extended battery. 16gb is more than enough space to to carry all your current media and games. CURRENT. Not your entire library.. and if you need it you always have cloud storage.
Clearly you're very biased and have some sort of technological inferiority. Either that or you're a noob to smartphones and this is your first. If you can't see that the Nexus 4 or ANY current flagship phone is better than the t989 (which was the runt of the GSII family to begin with..) than you're just plain naive and ignorant.
Also I'm not going to reply to your post so think what you want dude. Anyone with half a brain can see the truth for themselves.

We can play this dance all day long, the bottom line, YOU'RE WRONG!! at least about 1 thing.. Smartphones have replaced cameras, for many if not most people, minus the photonerds.
The N4 is a better phone on paper and I'm sure in general use, but again, built in batteries are weak, I don't care if it lasts all day with normal use.. Again, you aren't using it a full day taking pictures with it and during the day time many of these phones take great pictures, great enough that most people couldn't tell the difference.
As for expandable storage... please, 16gb wouldn't hold a candle to my music library alone, let alone the tons of other stuff I use.. Cloud storage is nice, but look at the terms and rules and watch how fast you will hate it..
Plan on having pictures or "other" stuff on your phone that violates the terms, they shut you down!
Many Nexus owners never made the switch, a perm. battery was a big negative for many.
The Iphone always sucked for the reasons I stated and I stand behind that. I would take the NoteII or GSIII over it anyday and so would most (As the numbers already show that)
This guy has got to be trolling.. as you said. Numbers are proof. This iPhone you say is such **** happens to be the best selling smartphone of all time. Without it's non expandable storage, non removal battery and glass build. So.. yea. You're wrong. Also to top it off these options are preferences.
I'm a power user and I don't need any of these options. I listen to all the current albums I'm into plus some favorites that always stay in my library. I have over 85 apps installed as well as one or 2 big games like Most Wanted. I have over 600 pictures in my DCIM folder. A few ROMs and zips in my root. Your views of storage on a MOBILE device are flawed. You're he type of person to take your entire library with you. More often than not, you are the minority.
I usually get between 3.5-4.5 hours of screen on time that I can easily break up between my work time and whatnot. Usually at the end of the night before I plug back in my is still alive. So an extended battery is also a moot point.
I have no need for any of the options you're basing your self righteous opinion about what phone is best on. Now imagine the average person that doesn't even use their phone half as much as we do.
All that and I don't even use cloud storage or an extended battery!
You're beginning to realize how ridiculous you sound, right?

I gotta laugh at everyone that said the n4 blowwwwws the t989 out of the water in every way. Lol
First....go to the n4 forum and read the problems people are having.
Second ...a friend of mine got one...I played with it a bit. Severely unimpressed. Sure its speedy....but barely quicker than my t989. The display looks like crap compared to mine. And it simply seems fragile! Very!
I will hold on to my Hercules til it breaks or my contract ends and I feel like replacing it. Maybe. My phone does everything I want it too very well. So until phones will do my dishes and tune up my car....I'll maybe stick with what I got. Lol
As far as the n4 goes.....I doubt I'd even trade my phone for it. Actually ....no....I wouldn't.

I'm patiently waiting for shipping orders to finish. Then I'm selling this t989 and jumping ship back onto the Nexus. As far as what the guy up top said about development on the Nexus, clearly he's new to XDA. No phone has more dev support than the Nexus line does. In fact, much of your favorite AOSP roms were built and first released on Nexus devices. Not only that but Nexus devices always get Google's newest OS' first. The t989 doesn't even have full Jelly Bean GPU driver support.. you guys don't even know what project butter truly is yet.
Second, the t989s dual core s3/adreno 220 SoC cannot in anyway whatsoever compete with the quad s4 pro/adreno 320 SoC. You can clock this phone as high as you want and score 9000 on antutu and its still not enough to beat the 13,000 the s4 pro SoC averages.. and that's on stock builds.
Third, if you say the 720p IPS display isn't better than the 480p over saturated SAMOLED display on the t989, clearly you're either blind or couldn't tell a good display if one took a dump on your eyeballs. While blacks will never be as deep, color reproduction is much better on the Nexus 4. And if Voodoo follows suit like on the other Nexus devices, well be able to tweak and calibrate the screen to our will.
Battery life? Nexus 4 wins hands down. Build quality? The t989 looks like crap compared to the Nexus 4.
Working for T-Mobile, I've already played with about 4 Nexus 4s. They're beautiful devices. Super fast and smooth.
Now stop hating and come back to reality. This phone wasn't even better than the other GSIIs, let alone any flagship device released this year. We can all use the "my phone does everything well" excuse but frankly, so can my old single core Nexus S.
With that being said, you kids can continue making up all sorts of crazyness up in trying to justify your purchase over a brand new handset that's better in every conceivable way. It makes for some great comedy.

Don't take it so personal is all. No one was "crying" and some don't need the fastest phone on earth to be perfectly happy.
Seems the phone crowd has some min/maxers....which is fine ...their choice. I don't have a top of the line gaming computer either....my laptop "does what I want it to do" just fine. Just like my Hercules.
I will be keeping this phone for some time. I could buy an n4, or anything else for that matter, tomorrow .....but I feel no need to. That's me. Maybe not you.
Can't we all use whatever phone we want without the hate?

Well see, your opinion makes sense. I can dig that. Unfortunately that's not the OPs reasoning as he full out stated that the t989 is better. You can be happy with whatever device you want. You can't take that away from anyone. But facts are facts. And this device doesn't come anywhere close to a Nexus 4. That's all I'm saying.

Dropped it twice, waist high, No problems here seriously it's a phone with glass, just like the t989(don't think the t989 has gorilla glass 2 though) but if your not careful its going to break like every other phone.

As a former T989 owner and a current nexus 4 owner, this thread makes me laugh (and I was running AOKP jellybean on mine). Don't get me wrong, I loved my hercules and it is still a great phone, but let's be realistic here. The nexus 4 is hands down a better device in almost every way possible.
Screen
The display is far from "carp". Yes, if you are used to AMOLED displays (like the one on the T989), you will initially find the colors to be "washed out". But in reality, this is because AMOLED screens have grossly over-saturated and unrealistic colors. The blacks are not as deep as AMOLED but they are damn close (again this is due to the nature of IPS displays). Nexus 4 screen is much much sharper, the whites are actually white (and not blue like the one on the T989) and colors are more natural. There is a reason why most reviewers rate is as one of the best displays on any phone. IMO, there is no competition here.
Performance
Again, there is a big difference here (even with JB on the T989). Nexus 4 is smoother and snappier in general use. But heavy usage like gaming is where the biggest difference lies. As for benchmarks, the lower than expected scores are due to benchmark programs not being optimised for 4.2 (go see the difference between the new and old version of Antutu). And honestly, in reality, benchmarks don't mean s***. All I need to know is that this phone handles everything I throw at it without any hiccups and certainly much better than the T989. If you think that a two gen old dual core with 1 Gb ram preforms as a well as the current top end quad core with twice the ram, you are delusional.
Storage and battery
Storage is the only area where T989 has an advantage with its micro sd slot. If you are the type of person that needs to store all of your life on your phone then nexus 4 is not for you. Personally, I barely store anything on my phone (I had used up only about 4 gb of the internal space on my t989) as everything is on the cloud, so even the 8GB nexus 4 is more than enough. Again this is a personal thing so it's a disadvantage for some people but not others.
Battery life for me has been much better on the nexus 4 than on the t989. Obviously, everyone's usage is different so this will vary from person to person, but I'm extremely happy with mine.
Build quality
Here again, there is no competition. The nexus 4 has a much more solid build and has a very premium feel to it. My T989's plastic back started to creak like crazy just after a few days of owning it and it drove me crazy. I thought I was using a low-end entry level device rather than a premium product.
Yes the nexus has a glass back and yes glass cracks when you drop it...who knew huh? So if you are the type to drop your phone frequently, don't buy it or just get a case for it, end of story.
As for the problems being reported, very few newly released devices are without issues and this is a fact. T989 had it's fair share of problems, some of which have still not been fixed till this day (sticky power button anyone?). If you are someone who can't handle even a minor problem with your device, than a newly released phone is not for you (whether it be a nexus 4 or something else). And let's not forget that problems reported on online forums can be blown out of proportion. After all, only those who have issues are going to complain, while those without issues will probably remain silent. Personally, my nexus 4 is flawless, except for the slight static/buzzing problem from the earpiece reported by many people. However, this noise is very faint and inaudible during calls, so this is a non-issue for me. I'm confident that google will fix the issue and when they do, I will ask them to send me a replacement. After all, that's what the warranty is there for. In the mean time, I'm really enjoying owning this phone over my t989.
Oh and let's not forget about the pure android experience and the fact that you will get updates as soon as google releases them. Even if you are into modding, the nexus is the best phone for that as well as its modding community has always been the strongest out of any android phone. You guys really need to step back and look at things objectively here. As someone who has owned and lived with both phones, I can tell you that there is no competition between the two.
