Hi there Nexus owners, I currently own a Nexus S, and I plan on switching to a Galaxy Nexus but I was wondering since the Sa Nexus camera is lacking in the numbers when it comes to megapixels, does anyone know of the possibilities of swapping the camera of an SII (8mp) with that of our phone?
My Nexus S takes good enough pictures at 5mp but I just want to justify the lack of a need for the SIII over the Nexus.
I found the back camera for an SII for sale here.

No. Its not going to happen. Seriously people?

Sorry about the double post, I had to when I noticed the post right after mine stating "All Questions to Go into the Q&A Section".
So why do you think its not going to happen? Any insights?

Because you can't just take apart 2 phones and swap parts frankenstein style. Just because they're both phone cameras doesn't mean they're "plug and play". These things aren't desktop computers, their parts are not interchangeable.
If you think that the camera on the GNex is that bad (it actually isn't), and a phone camera is that important to you, don't buy the GNex.
Thanks for the input, I brought it up only because I know a fairly similar act was successfully pulled off with the Galaxy S and the Galaxy S 4G, with the front camera swap. Maybe someone with better knowledge of the internals can give some insight on what differences exist if there are. I dont mind getting the GNEX to be frank, way to much pros over the cons, but I can't wait to be able to swap out parts off a phone on the fly like a computer. Now thats going to be the best thing that happened to the phone industry after Android.

Phones have been closed proprietary hardware systems since the modern smartphone. They're getting more closed and proprietary as time goes on. If you want better performance, battery life, and design you need them to be closed, sealed devices.
Even laptops are going this way. If you wanna swap parts get a dekstop computer.

The Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S II camera modules are totally different. If the SII camera worked out of the box with the Galaxus' ISP (which is quite possible,) the connectors are completely different. It would require so much work that it just wouldn't be worth it by any stretch.
That and it probably wouldn't even fit inside the phone.

How many universal parts/standards do you see on the inside of phones? Even if parts were more universal your phone would be uglier than Frankenstein and look like a mummy with all the duct tape keeping it together so you have something usable. A lot of things would have to become standard before swapping parts in and out even becomes thinkable. Think when a thought pops happens upon your head.
let it be.
When i read threads like this or those "can i install Gingerbread on gnex? " i really think these are TROLLS trying to get people mad...
Makes no sense, you want a better camera? Get a nikkon camera... I dont even see the point on better cameras on a phone.. If i can take a picture to put a Face on my contact or to take any fast photo for a quick reference.. Im ok.. Now if I want really good pictures for a wedding, 15 years daughter party or any special moment.. Id hire a professional photographer.. Thats all about it
Ppl tends to be really stupid about this, like iphone fan Boys.. When they figured 4S its a piece of crap they only got left to say oh but the camera its awesome... Yeah?? Better than a nikkon 24mp / 300 photos per second / 2milles zoom 250gb internal memory 1 touch in screen per 300 photos?... I say go to hell

Thanks for ur inputs guys. That been said if you are a member of XDA then I will think you won't be one to comfortably accept what the manufacturer gave u as is, keep it in your pocket and feel satisfied, we are here to tweak, tinker and learn from these devices, some of us at least.
If no one challenged what manufacturers have handed down then there won't be a need for MIUI, Voodoo, Ezekeel etc. I was only looking to see the possibilities I am not an electronic head to know exactly what can be or cannot be done. But I sure can don't mind satisfying my curiosities by raising questions i am unsure about, so call me a troll if u want. "That don't faze me foo".

Even if possible, if. You got enough money to buy 2 phones just to swap cameras, or lets put it this way, the camera its so portant to you that you dont mind spending over 1k USD just to swap the camera and with the risk of damaging the 2 phones in the process (as you said "you are not an electronic head") so risk its even higher of messing all the things up.. And wasting 1k USD?? Ok thats your money its your problem but dont Think any decent person around here will lead you to that and as i said if the camera its so important, dude theres plenty devices out there with 8/12 mp cameras and you can always flash some stock/custom ICS room to that device.
So you can get your camera with ICS in a reasonable way and any1 could help you accomplish that

Don't forget the duct tape and jb-weld.
I still don't get why people are so worried with the GN's camera. I have both (GN & GS2) and can't tell from a glance "oh, this is the GN and this is the GS2" from looking at a picture.
- both are back illuminated sensors
- a 1920x1080 screen is 2 megapixels, most professional photographers say that 5 megapixels is more than enough, above is only useful if you *print* on large medias (eg. posters)
- both have the same sensor size
It is true that the GN had focus oddities and no image stabilization but this was fixed in 4.0.4. Don't forget that the GN has 2 CPUs (Cortex M3) dedicated solely to the camera subsystem. This is why there's instant shoot on that device.
Also consider that things change WAY too fast in this industry to develop standards. Intel can make a new CPU and ride on it for 2-3 years before they need to make a new one, even with AMD nipping at its heels. And when they make their CPU, they make it however they want, and the OEMs will build the form factor around it.
Smartphone companies do not have the same luxury. People want their sensor-laden connected supercomputers to fit comfortably in their hands, and they want it right now. If someone were to try to come up with a standard CPU, it would be obsolete before the ink dried on the standards page. Look how long it took them to agree on MicroUSB, and that's just a port.
Company: Here's your camera standard, the C5. Plug it into any board and you're good to go.
OEM: Only 8 megapixels? No backlight? Not good enough.
Company. OK, here's the C6.
Only 12 megapixels? NO CMOS sensor?
And on it goes.

Man so I just saw a video review of Droid X over Android Central and the Moto X got 60fps out of the box without any hacks. But with HTC the devs gotta hack it. Yeah yeah I know some peeps would say we don't need 60fps, but hell for me even if I only get 40fps with nova hack, things seem so much smoother.

Yeah, I'm pissed off with my EVO! or I should say HTC!!! I've emailed them about 3 times now and still no reply in regards to the 30 frame rates per second cap. I'm going to wait until the 3rd of July and return my evo and wait for the sprint samsung galaxy version... i read there's going to be 2 versions, a pro with the qwerty and a keyboard less. Also i read the processor in it is identical to that of the iphone 4. This is bull HTC, i expected the best from the evo until the 2nd day i had my evo and saw my palm pre plays 3d games 10 times better than the evo.
I feel what you guys are saying, but how many of us would have known about this issue so early on had it not been for the members here bringing it to our attention, I would have probably caught it later on and not so soon. And yes it is very snappy with the hack.
Also I'm pretty sure sprint is only getting the QWERTY flavored Galaxy S. Samsung also doesn't have a very good track record with keeping up with their devices on a timely fashion. I left MOMENT due to that and went HTC, not like sprint has an variety of big named devices anyway. I'm pretty sure emailing HTC at this point is a waste of time seeing as they already stated they capped it for *their* reasons. This isn't a problem for me since the devs are working on fixes even tho it isn't their job. I'm not an average user so tweaking and twiddling with my phone is all good for me. But I can see how to an average user this would be an issue if they even decide to care.
I really don't know how any of you guys expect to by any smart phone or gadget for that matter and have it work flawlessly without fault. I still can't get over people getting bent about some light warpage that you only see in dark areas but hey thats just me.
Samsung has pledged to focus more on their Android devices so I would imagine that their past issues with not updating will be resolved...

You emphasized one phone as if meaning to say that HTC hasn't ****ed up on just about every other phone they've ever put out as well...
IMO the grass is not greener at Samsung. I have had the i760 and the Moment and each time I swapped them for the HTC equivilent at the time.
Every device has issues, but at least HTC hacks are much easier to come by...the evidence is in the size of the XDA forums.
The only thing I like better about Samsung is that the hardware is less flimsey, but HTC has gotten better at it over the last year.

Guys, we know that the cap is software imposed. It can be fixed. Sure, HTC screwed up by imposing a 30FPS cap, but nothing matches the QQing the iPhone 4 users are making right now. (Seriously, glass back and front? Antennae shorting?)
Basically, the cap will be broken completely soon. It is HTC's fault they imposed such a dumb cap in the first place, but calling the company crap because of that is kind of uncalled for.

OP, play with an evo for a few minutes and then try to say that the (temporary) 30fps cap really makes a difference to the overall experience of the device.
Just go buy the droid x and don't spend your precious time here to tell us how you hate HTC and the EVO because you have so much experience with the Droid X to says its so much better.

Oh snap! lol I'll be laughing about this remark til tomorrow.
I have had just about every Android phone Verizon offers. And obviously, my latest is the inc2 which I love BTW. But I have noticed something- the amount of activity and or support for this device amazes me. Is it JUST because we don't have perm root yet? It seems like even peoples basic questions go unanswered because not enough people are around.
In no way am I trying to point any fingers or rush the amazing devs. I am just curious as to why there seems to be very little activity here. Could it be that people are already happy with their inc2 the way they are, so there isn't much rush to change it? I don't think so.. theres always bigger and better things to try and look forward to.
I came from a fascinate previous to this phone and had more problems with it than I could even begin to list. But the dev support was there. Hopefully its just the root factor causing the lack of support.. or maybe I am missing something. Please try to refrain from the flaming.

I've herd others say this and I don't get it. It's a very high end phone! Second generation snapdragon with gpu and a front facing camera? I'de say its high end. Not a tb but not many phones have dual core or Tegra 2 yet. Plus 4g is too much. It sucks battery and its not covered enough yet. 3g is just fine for me. Its the best phone Verizon has at the moment. Give it more than a little over a month.. this is why I keep my inc1 to play with. it'll come..
I believe the issue is that HTC has given us an ounce of hope by telling us that they will no longer lock their bootloaders. By doing this, most people are hesitant to try and root their phone since they know that HTC might do it for them. (Or provide an automated solution, of course.)

Sure, it's not a tbolt. Differences:
tbolt has 4.3" screen, I2 has 4" screen
tbolt has LTE, I2 does not
tbolt has a kickstand built in, I2 does not
...
...
Do you find these differences revolutionary? Because that's pretty much the only real differences. They both have the same SOC (2nd gen snapdragon), same 768mb RAM, same cameras, etc. The core hardware is pretty much the same. Unfortunately the storage controllers are different enough to make the rooting process for the tbolt not work for the I2, but it's my understanding they are similar enough that a similar hack is being worked on.
(this isn't targeted at gigamchz, just expanding on what was said)

I can't believe I'm starting such a blasphemous thread in a Nexus forum, but here it goes. Here's my short Android history to get a feel for where I'm at. I started with the HTC Sensation 4G last summer and was amazed how customizable Android was. Totally fell in love with the OS compared to iOS. Although I liked the custom roms and such, they were all the same (think sense), those that were different (AOSP/CM) all had broken stuff (bt/camera/etc). So to fix that I moved from the Sensation to the Galaxy Nexus to help quench my dev support envy. I digged the 720p display, larger screen, and no bloatware! It was hard for me to get over the 16gb internal storage though as I often keep HD movies on my phone and with all my apps that limits it to about 1 movie lol. For the past 6 months I've been struggling with storage space. I can make a CWM backup for a ROM, flash another, but before I back that up, I gotta delete the first one... You get the drift.
Then the SGS3 specs come out and it's a step up a lot of departments from the GN. Bigger screen real estate (yes, only .15" but more like .3" if you count the on screen buttons), much faster processor in the S4 chip, double the RAM (nice), better camera, bigger battery, and finally 32GB with the coveted SD card slot. So I got a 64gb card waiting to go in for a whopping 96gb's. Between both locations, I should be able to put most all of my music on my smartphone for once (I've been dying to do that since 2007) and have plenty of left over space for photos, movies, backups, etc... Oh, and the device will be HSPA+42 and in my area will be screaming fast. I get 7-9mbps down on the GN in my neighborhood and expect a ballpark of 15-25mbps down with the GSIII.
My only nagging thought is ROM support. At first, I'll just want to root and de-bloat with Titanium Backup so I can get my saved app data files transferred over from my GN. I'm sure Root will come fast, but what about REAL dev support? Do you guys think the Tmo version will essentially be the same as all other GSM S4 chipped SGSIII's? That's what I'm hoping for. Honestly, with all the bells and whistles of the SGSIII built into Touchwiz will there ever be a point where CM9 will include all that?
What I mean is this. I realized after some time with the Sensation that if you want all the manufacturer bells and whistles you gotta run a stock rom (or at least a modded Sense rom). The great thing about the Nexus is AOSP is stock. There aren't many bells and whistles. We get the added functionality from CM (or AOKP/etc...).
So, anyone think I'm making a bad move here abandoning the Nexus for Sammy's new flagship?

Ultimately it comes down to what you want and what you need in your phone.
If the latest GalaxyS fills that need, then that's all that matters. You will be the one using it daily.
I'm sure that what I like in my phone, and what my needs are, may be very different than the next persons. I prefer a very bare bones phone, without a lot of extra stuff added in. I like the variety of roms and kernels that are available to use with the Gnex. So, for me, the Gnex fits my needs and uses for what I want in a phone.
Being this is the Gnex forum, I'm sure there will be plenty of answers swayed to the Gnex side. (mine included)
The Galaxy SIII is a very nice phone, and one I'm sure you will be happy with.
Enjoy the new phone
Thanks. I'll have to check it out first on the store display on the 21st but I swear if it doesn't feel smooth like my CM9/Trinity combo that'll be a deal breaker!!! It has a better CPU/GPU than our GN so hopefully that's not a problem but... not all software is created equal!
It's your choice not ours. 16GB is enough for me but one man's meat is another man's poison.

The only phones they have that do have it are the SII, and One S as far as top tier android phones.. I don't see any mention in it in press releases, but I did for the One S so can't be too sure.

They put it on (pretty much) everything. Go to their phones page (http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/) and sort the selection by "Wi-Fi Calling" in the side bar. There are dozens of options. Basically all it does is kick out the WP7 devices.
I'd bet a large sum of money that the SGSIII will have WiFi calling on T-Mobile.

Well played sir. The weaker would have taken the bait. But I'll leave my opinion. You have more of a technical insight/demand/wishes for what you expect out of a device. And as others have said it sounds like you've sold yourself already. I don't even pay attention to what processor, gfx chip or ram amount is in any given device. For me, the galaxy nexus form factor and true aosp is what I couldn't give up for a side grade considering that there is nothing more that I need/want/expect out of the galaxy nexus at this point. The sgsIII lost me with the color choices and buttons. Call me simple, but love mah navbar and what some java geeks have done with it on the galaxy nexus. The next device I look into will really have to knock my **** in the dirt and NOT have buttons on the front. May you find happiness.
good day.

I think this phone matches nexus easily in every aspect almost. Nexus is not better. This phone has great developers and there's nothing it can't do that the nexus can.

Indeed.
Besides, the Nexus 4 thread is actually spammed with people having problems with the phone, phone "breaks" randomly in their pocket, pics of broken Nexus 4s, etc

I gotta laugh at everyone that said the n4 blowwwwws the t989 out of the water in every way. Lol
First....go to the n4 forum and read the problems people are having.
Second ...a friend of mine got one...I played with it a bit. Severely unimpressed. Sure its speedy....but barely quicker than my t989. The display looks like crap compared to mine. And it simply seems fragile! Very!
I will hold on to my Hercules til it breaks or my contract ends and I feel like replacing it. Maybe. My phone does everything I want it too very well. So until phones will do my dishes and tune up my car....I'll maybe stick with what I got. Lol
As far as the n4 goes.....I doubt I'd even trade my phone for it. Actually ....no....I wouldn't.

I'm patiently waiting for shipping orders to finish. Then I'm selling this t989 and jumping ship back onto the Nexus. As far as what the guy up top said about development on the Nexus, clearly he's new to XDA. No phone has more dev support than the Nexus line does. In fact, much of your favorite AOSP roms were built and first released on Nexus devices. Not only that but Nexus devices always get Google's newest OS' first. The t989 doesn't even have full Jelly Bean GPU driver support.. you guys don't even know what project butter truly is yet.
Second, the t989s dual core s3/adreno 220 SoC cannot in anyway whatsoever compete with the quad s4 pro/adreno 320 SoC. You can clock this phone as high as you want and score 9000 on antutu and its still not enough to beat the 13,000 the s4 pro SoC averages.. and that's on stock builds.
Third, if you say the 720p IPS display isn't better than the 480p over saturated SAMOLED display on the t989, clearly you're either blind or couldn't tell a good display if one took a dump on your eyeballs. While blacks will never be as deep, color reproduction is much better on the Nexus 4. And if Voodoo follows suit like on the other Nexus devices, well be able to tweak and calibrate the screen to our will.
Battery life? Nexus 4 wins hands down. Build quality? The t989 looks like crap compared to the Nexus 4.
Working for T-Mobile, I've already played with about 4 Nexus 4s. They're beautiful devices. Super fast and smooth.
Now stop hating and come back to reality. This phone wasn't even better than the other GSIIs, let alone any flagship device released this year. We can all use the "my phone does everything well" excuse but frankly, so can my old single core Nexus S.
With that being said, you kids can continue making up all sorts of crazyness up in trying to justify your purchase over a brand new handset that's better in every conceivable way. It makes for some great comedy.

Don't take it so personal is all. No one was "crying" and some don't need the fastest phone on earth to be perfectly happy.
Seems the phone crowd has some min/maxers....which is fine ...their choice. I don't have a top of the line gaming computer either....my laptop "does what I want it to do" just fine. Just like my Hercules.
I will be keeping this phone for some time. I could buy an n4, or anything else for that matter, tomorrow .....but I feel no need to. That's me. Maybe not you.
Can't we all use whatever phone we want without the hate?
Read the n4 forum....many....many people saying the same things I said about the n4....I didnt make a call tho....so guess I missed out on hearing the buzzing everyone is excited about! Lol. Bottom line....for me.....never bought an LG product I was happy with.
Take care dude....guess you'll be off to live in the n4 forums!

Well see, your opinion makes sense. I can dig that. Unfortunately that's not the OPs reasoning as he full out stated that the t989 is better. You can be happy with whatever device you want. You can't take that away from anyone. But facts are facts. And this device doesn't come anywhere close to a Nexus 4. That's all I'm saying.

Dropped it twice, waist high, No problems here seriously it's a phone with glass, just like the t989(don't think the t989 has gorilla glass 2 though) but if your not careful its going to break like every other phone.

As a former T989 owner and a current nexus 4 owner, this thread makes me laugh (and I was running AOKP jellybean on mine). Don't get me wrong, I loved my hercules and it is still a great phone, but let's be realistic here. The nexus 4 is hands down a better device in almost every way possible.
Screen
The display is far from "carp". Yes, if you are used to AMOLED displays (like the one on the T989), you will initially find the colors to be "washed out". But in reality, this is because AMOLED screens have grossly over-saturated and unrealistic colors. The blacks are not as deep as AMOLED but they are damn close (again this is due to the nature of IPS displays). Nexus 4 screen is much much sharper, the whites are actually white (and not blue like the one on the T989) and colors are more natural. There is a reason why most reviewers rate is as one of the best displays on any phone. IMO, there is no competition here.
Performance
Again, there is a big difference here (even with JB on the T989). Nexus 4 is smoother and snappier in general use. But heavy usage like gaming is where the biggest difference lies. As for benchmarks, the lower than expected scores are due to benchmark programs not being optimised for 4.2 (go see the difference between the new and old version of Antutu). And honestly, in reality, benchmarks don't mean s***. All I need to know is that this phone handles everything I throw at it without any hiccups and certainly much better than the T989. If you think that a two gen old dual core with 1 Gb ram preforms as a well as the current top end quad core with twice the ram, you are delusional.
Storage and battery
Storage is the only area where T989 has an advantage with its micro sd slot. If you are the type of person that needs to store all of your life on your phone then nexus 4 is not for you. Personally, I barely store anything on my phone (I had used up only about 4 gb of the internal space on my t989) as everything is on the cloud, so even the 8GB nexus 4 is more than enough. Again this is a personal thing so it's a disadvantage for some people but not others.
Battery life for me has been much better on the nexus 4 than on the t989. Obviously, everyone's usage is different so this will vary from person to person, but I'm extremely happy with mine.
Build quality
Here again, there is no competition. The nexus 4 has a much more solid build and has a very premium feel to it. My T989's plastic back started to creak like crazy just after a few days of owning it and it drove me crazy. I thought I was using a low-end entry level device rather than a premium product.
Yes the nexus has a glass back and yes glass cracks when you drop it...who knew huh? So if you are the type to drop your phone frequently, don't buy it or just get a case for it, end of story.
As for the problems being reported, very few newly released devices are without issues and this is a fact. T989 had it's fair share of problems, some of which have still not been fixed till this day (sticky power button anyone?). If you are someone who can't handle even a minor problem with your device, than a newly released phone is not for you (whether it be a nexus 4 or something else). And let's not forget that problems reported on online forums can be blown out of proportion. After all, only those who have issues are going to complain, while those without issues will probably remain silent. Personally, my nexus 4 is flawless, except for the slight static/buzzing problem from the earpiece reported by many people. However, this noise is very faint and inaudible during calls, so this is a non-issue for me. I'm confident that google will fix the issue and when they do, I will ask them to send me a replacement. After all, that's what the warranty is there for. In the mean time, I'm really enjoying owning this phone over my t989.
Oh and let's not forget about the pure android experience and the fact that you will get updates as soon as google releases them. Even if you are into modding, the nexus is the best phone for that as well as its modding community has always been the strongest out of any android phone. You guys really need to step back and look at things objectively here. As someone who has owned and lived with both phones, I can tell you that there is no competition between the two.

Meh.. Its not great, but it's okay. You would never see me wearing one. I do, however, have my eyes on the Note 3. I own the s4 currently, but have always had a slight desire for the Note. I already have a Samsung smart watch... I pull it out of my pocket, press the button on the top-right, and I can see what time it is. Among other things it also makes phone calls, records video, and is quite adept at just generally being pretty awesome.
I don't see the necessity for the smart watch, especially since it has to be paired with a phone. It seems cool and all, but I think it's far too limited to be used regularly, intuitively speaking, and is also a bit pricey and gimmicky, imo. Of course, I'm sure some will come along and sing of it's praises, but to that poor misguided chap, I simply reply: bellow your misguided attempts of impression to someone else, for I remain thoroughly unimpressed!
Instead of a smart watch, i would rather a Star Trek style communicator badge.
The Note 3 does look like a decent upgrade from the N7000.
One thing i would like to see in a smartphone is a digital radio receiver, rather than (or in addition to) FM. I know digital radio isn't as ubiquitous as FM - and the standard varies from place to place (DAB+ here in Australia, iirc). But it would be pretty neat, and certainly innovative.

im more interested in how the nexus 5 will turn out. The note 3 is good n all, but its too big for me, and s pen doesnt really grab me either. One of many good things i like about switching from sprint to tmobile is that switching phones is so much easier. ill have my s4 as a home phone and my nexus 5 as a going out device.
And seeing how t-mobile is dragging their feet with updating us without even giving us a reason, the nexus line is that much more appealing
