Hello,
My led flash has been giving me problems for like 3 month now. The led flash sometimes works with the camera app and flashlight apps but most of the time it does not.
I tried diffrent roms and kernels and nothing helps. I changed yesterday a kernel after 3 month and i tried a led app and it worked once and thats it.
Do you think its a hardware or software problem?
Thanks.

Hi guys.
Here`s my problem.
The camera LED on my hTC Desire won`t work in video camera recording mode(recording with LED ON), and also won`t work on the built in Flashlight.apk from Sense.
However, it does work on photo camera mode(if in dark places, it take photos using the LED - all ok).
I`ve tried different ROMs, with a full wipe(bot cache and Dalvik cache) in between the ROMs, and the LED acts the same in all of them(works only on photo camera mode - darkened places). However, I`ve installed the ICS ROM found here, on xda-developers, and this certain ROM has a small widget called "Torch", which uses the LED for a flashlight, and IT WORKS.
Now, if there was a hardware issue regarding the LED, it shouldn`t work on any ROM - basically it`s not a software issue.
I`m pretty much stunned here.
Has anyone encountered this before?
Thanks.
Hi,
I have a similar sounding problem. No camera, no camcorder, no flashlight, no led's. However the flash flashes when the phone is being booted. Thats it. I will try ICS to see if the flashlight etc works and let you know.
I have tried sense roms, AOSP roms to no avail.
regards

I`ve had the exact same problem in the past, regarding the LED, which didn`t work in any applications(flashlight, camera etc.), but strangely flashed by itself when the phone booted, and sometimes flashed randomly while simply browsing through phone(internet, games,) - without a certain pattern. I had to send the phone back for warranty, and they told me that there was a problem with a certain hardware circuit band which connects the LED and Power Button to the phone`s motherboard. I think you have the same problem.
U can try with ICS, but my guess is, it won`t help you.

Hi,
you were spot on. Got the beloved desire back from HTC (excellent service by the way). Thanks for your help.
I've had my galaxy nexus for a full 2 weeks and only recently I've noticed problems with the camera LED flash. (not the notification LED, the camera flash on the back of the phone.) Pretty much the LED on the phone will stop working most off the time for no reason at all.
I try to snap a pic with flash turned on but it won't do anything (only takes the pic but no flash), same with the camcorder and third party flashlight apps I've used. I actually managed to get it to work a few times but I havent been doing anything differently so it seems like it works at random.
The LED flash has not been functioning properly for the past 2 days and i even tried a factory reset to fix this but no luck unfortunately. Has anyone else had issues with this, or have any advice on how to fix this? i'm hoping its not a hardware issue.
I've had no issues with the flash so it seems you indeed have a hardware issue... TeslaLED works for sure, so you might want to try it though. Some other flashlight widgets seem to have issues with the phone.
You should be able to get the flash working at least in the camera app and in TeslaLED.
I have just tried Tesla led, it's not working on my nexus, but flash working well when shooting. I'm confused a bit.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
TeslaLED working fine for me too.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I would bring the phone back to wherever you bought it, show the issue to them, and they should replace it. Sounds like a hardware issue, I've had the phone for > 3 weeks and my LED flash has never failed to turn on.
Reboot. Go into the ICS stock camera app. Manually turn on flash (force on). Take pictures. If the flash doesn't turn on every time, something is wrong with the hardware.
The notification LED was working fine with the stock ROM. After flashing to AOKP milestone 3 and then b25, it stopped working (for both versions). Missed calls, emails and sms don't trigger the LED. I tried light flow lite to test it too and it didn't work.
I did a data wipe/cleared cache before each flash. Nothing important on the phone at the moment as its brand new.
Any ideas or known bugs with the custom ROM's with the LED?
update: flashed back to google stock rom, installed both led tester and light flow, LED still doesn't work

LED should work on stock ROM. I haven't had any issues with the LED on the stock ROM for the last two months.
If the LED has stopped working on the stock ROM, I'd be inclined to suggest a possible hardware issue.
The only variation I've seen is twitter uses green on the LED light. Perhaps see if any of the other variation of colors on the LED appear other than the standard white/multi color?
The other route I'd take to test would be to figure out the sysfs control files for the LED and test through echo'n values there.
Hope that helps give a few more suggestions!

how do i echo the values there? meanwhile, im still searching the control file for the LED.
i have flashed back to stock rom + locked bootloader.
nothing i do seems to work, i guess it is a hardware issue. anyone else experience the same thing? how is it that the LED just stops working? i'm starting to wonder if the 3 metal contacts (i think its for the dock), if touched, can cause the LED to die.
have you tried lightflow?

yes i have tried lightflow on various roms. none of them worked.
Make sure you turned it on in the Display settings; "Pulse notification light".

it is turned on, for all the roms i have flashed.
I recently noticed some weird activity with my 2 year old Desire. Just yesterday I realized that my LED flashlight + camera flash is not exactly dead, but it doesn't turn on when I want it to.
The camera app works fine, but it does not flash regardless of whatever camera flash settings I use. Torchlight seems dead as well (tried with power control + market apps).
The strange this is, that the flash does go on for a split second when the phone boots, as well as during normal phone usage (I'm using whatsapp, then I notice a quick, bright flash on the wall). It also does go on like this even when I'm in recovery.
Hardware/software issue? Let me give you a run down of what I did prior to this. And I did not drop my phone, submerge it in water/acid.
I decided to flash the excellent dGB rom in the middle of April. All was well, and I know the flashlight worked then because of a power-outage in my house. Towards the end of the month, had some signal issues on the latest radio, decided to flash 5.10.05.23.
To recap at this point,
ROM: dGB v01_28_2012
HBoot partition: 65MB /system (SURoot)
Radio: 5.17.05.23 -> 5.10.05.23
Kernel: dGB-2.1-EViollet-GB-HAVS-AXI-128-CFS.zip
After the whole power-outage in my house, I did not use the flashlight.
As I was in my room yesterday, I realized the LED Flashlight went on and off for a split second. Finding it strange, I tried to turn on the flashlight from the notification menu. Didn't work. Tried to use the camera to shoot a picture with flash - camera works, but the flash didn't. Flashlight apps in the marketplace did not work as well.
Thinking it was software, I decided to flash a new rom, kernel, radio, hboot (everything).
I tried Runnymede AIO, 5.14.05.175.14.05.17, cm r2 hboot, droidzone #18 kernel last night, with the same result- camera app works, flash and flashlight doesn't. Random flashes still happen.
I've searched around, and most people with this same problem, BUT with black camera/camera crashes as well have reported hardware problems.
So, what could be wrong with my phone? I have the tools to open up the phone, is there anything I could do?
Thanks in advance!
Ok, I think I may have solved the problem?
Unrooting or s-on didn't help (flashed alpha rev downgrade as well as 2.3 RUU).
Decided to pop out my MUGEN battery (1600MAH) back to the stock HTC battery for some reason....
And now the LED Flashlight works!
Anybody with this problem could try this just to confirm, I know there are a few topics out there with only two outcomes "I sent it back to HTC" or there was no reply from the OP.
This also brings up a curious question. The only thing I did with the MUGEN battery in the past couple of weeks was calibrating it according to the FAQ written over at the Oxygen forum, using the Nexus One Calibration tool.
I don't exactly think I've messed up somewhere.. But could that have been an issue?
The Plot Thickens
The Plot Thickens!
Being happy that the LED flash works again, I decided to root my phone (again, after previously unrooting it to troubleshoot the problem).
What do you know? The LED Flash is not working on the stock battery now!
Swapping back to the previous assumed culprit, Mugen 1600MAH, enables use of the Flashlight once again.
What could be the problem? I would love for some input!

I have the same problem. At first I thought the flash was delayed or that the shutter was laggy I.e. one was firing before the other, but then realised that the white portion of the dual led wasn't firing at all. Neither does it work with flashlight apps. However the white portion of the led works just fine when videoing. It makes no sense as this would indicate the actual hardware is fine and could be software related. I've tried different ROMs to no avail inc CM12. At the moment I'm running Cloudy 2.2 and don't really want to flash back to stock just to fix this. I may just RMA the handset though, so I'd have to reflash back to stock it anyway.
There are quite a few posts about this now, so its certainly not a one off problem.
