Need a little help with gaining S-OFF - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

I'm currently rooted via the HTC Dev. method which obviously means I'm S-ON. I keep having to flash the boot image of the ROM every time I restart/reboot the phone which is really annoying. So I want to go the whole 9 yards and obtain S-OFF status. I read the comprehensive thread on the matter and I'm a little confused and quite apprehensive about attempting it. Is there a newer or more updated method out there? Here's some info on my phone:
HTC Dev unlocked with S-ON
HBOOT-0.98.0000
ROM: MIUI.us_vivow_1.12.30
Thanks in advance guys,
Eric

I assume you mean this thread:

I didn't use that one, but what I've read from others is that it is easier than it sounds if you just take your time and follow the directions exactly.
You'll have to relock your bootloader first I believe.

[Q] confused with s-on/off....

So I will be unrooting my phone tonight so I can take it to sprint tomorrow. Before I do the unroot can someome please clear some confusion up for me? Ok so I rooted with 3.21 the other day. I have read and watched the video by djr3z regarding the unroot in 2 steps. I know he says you need to use the s-on tool only if you used UR forever... which i did not use. As I read on further, people were saying sometimes the boot loader says s-off even though it is not off which mine is s-off. So I noticed that guide was posted on the 12th prior to 3.21 being released so I'm not sure if anything changed. So my sort but sweet question is do I need to apply the s-on zip prior to actually unrooting? Sorry for so much crap but i have been searching and can't get a precise answer..Anyways anyone who can clear this up for me would be the man or woman! As always THANKS!
Maybe I should have put this in the general section.. oops.

Flash the s-on file. It might still say s-off on your boot screen, but after you flash the rom it should then say s-on. So in short, yes, use the s-on file.

Sorry man I had a brain fart and accidentally posted it here. Once I realized it was already too late. I'll pay more attention next time!
I'm afraid you might be still slightly confused. the S-off you're seeing is more likely part of the ENG Bootloader instead of the same as the unrevoked s-off
both do the same thing, but the eng bootloader needs to be replaced for the s-on to re-appear.
That's initially what I was thinking too since I installed Unrevoked 3.21 NOT Unrevoked forever. Installing the s-on just for ****s and giggles wouldn't hurt anything right? I just don't want to unroot and then realize it still has s-off, then have to re root and start over. Any thoughts?
no, it shouldnt hurt anything. Just might not solve your problem if its the bootloader that is s-off

[Q] Excited to get a DINC2.....questions about a lot of things.

Hey guys. I'm going to order my DINC2 tomorrow because I'm due for an upgrade. I've been reading a LOT around these forums. There is a TON of information and I love it, but the thing is, there's too much to the point where I don't know if everything is up to date, etc. My main goal with my DINC2 will just to be to flash a ROM based on CM7 that is currently on these forums. The thing is, there is a way to do this that looks sort of outdated. It is the method that involves downgrading hboot, then doing all the other misc stuff that is shown in a guide. I came across a tool that unlocks the bootloader from htcdev (not sure if I am allowed to reference this. sorry in advance if this violates rules).
The thing is, there is all this talk of S-off/S-on, perm root, etc. and it's overwhelming for me because I have never owned a smartphone before, much less an Android smartphone. What would be the most up to date method to flash the CM7 ROM onto the DINC2? The Unlock Bootloader method seems like it would be much simpler....but I'm not sure what capabilities the unlocked bootloader would give me.
Hi, welcome. You should root with revolutionary. Plain and simple. Bootloader unlock makes you have to do an extra step whenever you flash a ROM. I would go to revolutionary.io and use their method. It is actually very easy. If you HTC unlock, you can use my guide on what to do next in my signature.
Thank you for directing me to that link. I've been wondering for awhile if anyone had a super concise guide on how to do EVERYTHING.....really good guide!
But as stated before, the ideal way is to downgrade and s-off. No extra steps involved when flashing a new ROM or anything.

[Q] AAHK wont work?

You can still S-OFF your phone.
After a while, the script might (if needed) try to download a PD98IMG file. When it gives an error simply google for the filename (might be PD98IMG-GB2 for example) and place it in the PD98IMG directory AAHK created. Everything should go well. I S-OFF'd my Desire yesterday.

Sorry KirovAir, but if the people you are advising to use the Hack Kit get stuck due to not following instructions or some other issue, will you support that? Because let me remember you that the Hack Kit is no longer supported nor here or in the IRC channel. Don't you think that what you are advising is dangerous and might leave quite a few fellas with their phones in a blank screen?

Thanks for the information!
I had also read about 'Easy Ace Root Tool' in dev forum. But I have a question regarding that.
- It says that only Custom ROMs can be installed, not Ported ROMs. What is meant by 'ported ROMs'? Will I not be able to install, say Sabsa prime or Venom's ROM(which are ported from One S and Desire X), if I unlock bootloader using Easy Ace root tool?
Also, does it support flashing 4ext recovery?
could you please tell me at least which version of aahk you used? already found in the web PD98IMG-GB2 and i am willing to do the proccess... already red many forums about rooting my desire hd. but since you did that proccess already i think you can give some reliable tips even if this topic is unsupported here. i know that discussing about aahk is unwelcome in the xda forum and i am sorry for this but i think you would agree that its the way with the most chances of success. or anyway could you suggest me any another way to follow?
thank you for yoour time

Unlocking the bootloader will allow you to flash any recovery that is for the device (DHD / Inspire 4G), Custom roms built from source (CM) and modified sense roms work great. Ported roms I am not sure, but you can try it out. In the worst case scenario, you might get stuck in the splash screen and you will have to flash a different one.

No, Hack Kit is no longer supported anywhere. If you are willing to do it, you are on your own and will have to find information about it somehwere else. There are other ways to root or S-OFF the device that are supported here. So, please let the Hack Kit rest in peace.

You don't need S-OFF to root. You can just run this and you will be just fine. You don't have to be a programmer to root your phone, just do a little reading and searching will suffice.

[Q] Trouble achieving S-Off

Howdy! Lemme preface all of this by saying that I'm less than a noob here....really inexperienced. Here's the background......
I rooted my DInc and I can't even remember which unrevoked tool I used. I was just reading along and punching commands and when the process was done I was rooted. I installed CWM successfully and flashed to CM7.2 which I've been running for quite some time. Lately I got an itch to try a JB ROM like infected, so when I looked into it, it clearly says I need S-off to accomplish that flash so I checked and realized I was S-on still.
At this point, I added the unrevoked-forever.zip to my sdcard root and tried to flash that ZIP by way CWM and i get these error messages:
E: unsupported radio version
E: update failed. Check/sdcard/soff.log
E: error in /sdcard/unrevoked-forever.zip (Status 42)
I am running Android version 2.3.7 and radio baseband version 2.15.10.12.20
Is this one of those things that I shouldn't be trying from CM7.2 and I should've dealt with before my initial flash to CM7.2?? Basically I'm totally freakin lost and in WAAAAY over my element, so any guidance would be duly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Scott

Sorry....i guess it pays to be extra thorough in the description of the problem. The link you left me is the one that I followed. I researched achieving S-Off on the DInc first and found this same page in my research. I followed the process and all went smooth right up until i started to flash the unrevoked-forever.zip from my sdcard via CWM. The aforementioned error messages came up on my phone and it said the process failed.
I thought it might be because the radio baseband versions that are list as "supported" do not match mine

Sounds good to me. With the way HTC handles S-OFF, you don't really need it. I'd go the legit way and unlock your bootloader with HTCdev.
http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
Edit: and for the record, you're lucky you didn't brick your device. Reading the supported requirements and ignoring them is a good way to do it.

Yes thx....I'm gathering that! So this is where terminology gets so dang confusing for me. I didn't think unlocking my bootloader meant the same thing as achieving S-Off?? I already thought my bootloader was unlcoked, as I was able to flash CM7.2, which I didnt think I would be able to do if I had a locked bootloader. So wicked confused!!! And try as I miught to educate myself in these forums, I haven't located a sticky or guide that really thoroughly explains all the vernacular regarding android dev/modding/rooting/flashing/etc
So this other method will work with any radio baseband version then?? Or is it important to check compatibility there too??

Thank u for the materials too!
So after looking at those two links, it sure seems like not only is S-Off a potentially dangerous thing to do, it might also not even be necessary on the long-run. I say that carefully tho, as u just got thru telling me that flashing a new ROM against spec is a very dangerous thing to do and could potentially brick mu phone.
The ROM I'm looking to flash is Infection JB 4.2.2. The instructions say that if you're coming from. A non-AOSP ROM and are S-On that you've gotta extract boot.img and fastboot it after the ROM flash......whatever the heck that means???

Correct. Staying S-ON minimizes the danger. It locks your radio, and HBOOT, which are the main dangers.

Not really ROM flashing, but radio and HBOOT flashing, which is what unrevoked-forever tweaks.
I'd try to flash it one more time. When you do, what, if anything, are you wiping? You should be doing a factory reset, system, and boot wipe/format, then flash the ROM.
If that doesn't work (it might not, it's been awhile since I've worked with S-ON devices), then we'll move on to S-OFF (if you want).
Oh no.....I didn't even attempt to flash the Infection JB ROM specifically because I was not able to achieve S-Off. Whether it was intended or not, yea.....u sufficiently scared me about bricking the phone if I'm not to spec per the developer.
Are u saying I should wipe and then try to flash this ROM despite still being S-On?
Up to you. Personally, if it were me, I would try flashing the ROM with S-ON. The inc is a very friendly device, as long as you don't try to break the HBOOT and/or radios. It is next to impossible to break those with S-ON.
If you want to go S-OFF instead, grab the latest supported radio from http://dinc.does-it.net/ and then do the unrevoked-forever.

Well there you have it....I will trust your wisdom (as it is far supperior to my own) and I shall flash this ROM tonight!! I already have a nandroid backup of CM7.2 that Im running, as well as a Titanium backup of all my user apps/files.
Sincerest thanks for all your help!!
Hello. Im no expert but i think Cyanogenmod is aosp so you should be good.
I was where you were 2 yrs ago when I rooted my 1st phone: a friends froyo Dinc (ahhh...froyo). A few months ago I aquired my own and went to research how to root GB and everything has changed and is now vastly more complicated. Also I think every phone has a locked bootloader but not encrypted and I think Soff is extra security since I've only encountered it on htc phones. Anyway I've managed to get my inc to Soff but its still locked, idk how lol

[Q] Lost root with 4.3, still showing S-Off...

I'm still new to this, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I can't seem to find a straight answer in other posts.
I have a VZW Htc One and I used rumrunner successfully when i was still on 4.2. Being new to rooting, etc. I wasn't thinking about the OTA update and accepted it.
I lost root according to the Root Checker app (and titanium backup says I do not have root access). When I boot to the bootloader, it shows
*** Unlocked ***
M7_WLV PVT SHIP S-OFF RH
Hboot 1.55.0000
Radio-1.12.41.1112_2
OS-2.10.605.1
My question is will the instructions on this thread still work to regain root?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417043
If not, do I need to wait for the new rumrunner from beaups or is there another way?
If you are still S-OFF and Unlocked just push a custom recovery via fastboot and you can install SU from there. Or just flash a custom rom that is already rooted.

Yeah, or being a new forum member, they may not know or bother to search for answers to their questions before asking ones that have been answered already.
Unfortunately many users still haven't learned this after hundereds of posts, lol.
But yeah, that is the basic idea why.
Thanks Santod. I swear I had an account on here with a bunch of posts - because you helped me with my Thunderbolt a couple years ago - but I guess not.
People like you make this place worthwhile. Glad to see you're still contributing.
