[Q] How to tell which ROMs use s-pen? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, while trying to discern the differences between different ROMs, I came across a post talking about differences between cm and tw ROMs and that tw ROMs retain the functionality. Did I understand correctly?
Is there an indicator in ROM headings or similar that indicate this?
Thank you!

Yep, TouchWiz has s-pen features, AOSP based, CM, AOKP etc, do not.
CM and other AOSP based you can use the spen as a stylus without the software features.
The new MIUI will have a lot of the spen functions as it has a TW base
Just read the OP of the ROMs and if its TW based you know it'll have the spen capabilities

If it is 4.2.x then forget it.
If it is 4.1.x but has any reference to aosp or aokp or paranoid or cm then probably forget it.
If the screen shot looks like a normal phone like same launcher then it for sure supports it.
Generally all rom devs tell if it is Samsung based or built from source or kang.
Samsung based will support s pen.

How come so little 'custom roms' all based on stock ..

How come there is so little custom roms? like theres alot of stock based or AOSP based romsand even though there is MIUI last i tried it was very laggy (read around and read something about using popcorn kernel) how come theres no like iounno TouchWiz based rom like using touchwiz launcher or stuff like that im not trying to be stuck up or rude or unappriciative but if oyu look at phones like the Captivate its blooming in custom roms then the Gnexus is all stock based is there a reason as to why? developers havent gotten this phone?

My guess is because you chose a device that is AOSP pure google. If you chose a Touchwiz device like the Captivate or GS3 you would have TW ROMs, AOSP ROMs, AOKP ROMs, MIUI ROMs...and hybrids of those. It is easier to remove TW then it is to add it.
The captivate is two years old lol, and it has roms from Froyo to jb. don't forget launchers can also give the appearance of tw, blur, sense etc.

Are TW roms typically more stable than AOSP roms?

Thread title.
I was just wondering because TW roms are based on the current released version for the phone whereas AOSP roms are the latest android version ported over to the phone, is this correct?
My experience is yes, tw is more stable. Although aosp roms are for versions unreleased to our phone, such as 4.2.2. They are usually pretty stable and get better with time. It just takes time for developers to fix things. But you miss out on things such as being able to update prl or profile in the Aosp ROMs. AOSP ROMs aren't necessarily ported though, a lot are built from source, but I get what you are saying.

Thanks, for the longest time (up until today) I never saw the point in TW roms.
I was pretty naive and thought they were inferior in every way but the more I look into it I see there are lots of pros and cons to both

It depends. There are some unstable tw roms out there.

It really depends on who is building the Rom... right now, with them working out the bugs with the new 3.4 kernel must aosp roms are going to have some bugs.... tw is great though, more goodies in them and I generally get better performance and battery with tw roms... once the 3.4 kernel gets ironed out things should be pretty on par with tw on aosp though... I know of an almost completely stable 3.4 kernel, but it can't be mentioned here..

[Q] different ROMs for the I747

hey everyone
recently I have been looking for a ROM with a different look than the stock aosp and touchwiz feel. I have been using MIUI V5 for a little bit and I liked the change. but I want something different. I love the look and feel of Ubuntu, but the stability is not there yet for most phones.
so what I am asking is does anyone have any ROMs that are different than aosp, touchwiz or MIUI for the i747.
TIA
i hear iOS is completely different looking than android...

yeah i know
but i haaaatteee iphone and ios
i know i sound like a picky bastard but i just want to move away from the android UI but keep the playstore and stuff. Is that possible?
Even if it still is android, but just a different looking ROM. Im up for a change! :silly:
I know you said "other than aosp...", but have you tried Task650's AOKP? Super customization at it's finest. Also Bajees RootBox is sick. If you want the most in functionality and customization, I suggest you head in the direction of AOKP based stuff.
AOKP until death!!!

Not anything much different than roms you've tried. I would suggest trying some different launchers. Check this one out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHFh0omfHIM&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Look into Avatar Rom or Chameleon OS (I recommend the later). They are AOSP roms that add the theme engine and functionality of MIUI. Beyond this new launcher set ups (Buzz Launcher will help you with that) are the way to go.
Slap that thanks button if I helped
Thanks!
thanks everyone who responded!
Buzz Launcher is AMAZING! It really is and I am using it as we speak while running task650 ota AOKP ROM which I have been running on and off for the past 5 months!
do you guys know of any ROMs that aren't touchwiz/aosp/miui? I've been looking hard and I have not found any stable ones! i am super excited for Ubuntu phone for android but I am going to have to wait for a stable one.
TIA!.
Honestly, the only AOSP/AOKP roms I will run are Task's and RootBox.

Just installed Avatar Rom and loving it. Great themes ability and so far very stable.
nothing?
So there are no roms that are COMPLETLY different than Touchwiz/AOSP/MIUI?
Nope. If you want something completely different, I think you know what you need to buy

Sure there is, actually there is only ONE launcher which is totally different than all Touchwiz or aosp/aokp/miui launchers.
It's called "LMT Pie Launcher", it looks and works totally different than any other available launchers.
Personally I really do not like it at all, but if you want something totally different give it a try.
There are a lot of interesting Youtube videos which give a lot of useful information about it.
Here is the download link for the latest version of it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zkrinbltpg3tji5/LMT v1.99.apk
Good luck!

[POLL] Touchwiz-based ROMs vs. AOSP-based ROMs

Which do you prefer?
Both. Hybrid that is.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
For whatever reason, I get significantly better battery life using tw roms vs aosp. I prefer the look of aosp though. Battery life is winning the battle right now and I'm on TW
I have always preferred an aosp rom but they do not always offer all the goodies.. like mhl, or t-mobile wifi calling for example.. definitely always had better battery life for me, more free ram etc..

I dunno. That's a tough one. They both have their pros and cons. I can't honestly say that I think one is better than the other. If I had a low end device that might be a different story. I've been sticking with TW lately.
Ever since the s3 I've been sticking to tw since they offer some goodies that i find convenient.. And also the battery life has been way better for me

TouchWiz + rovo89s Xposed framework + one of the many tweaked kernels = better than any AOSP rom I've used. Just my own preference though ^_^

After trying pretty much every ROM compatible with my TMO S4, I keep coming back to the TMO TW ROMs. Most importantly, you can't get wi-fi calling any other way. But, as Slim TW ROMs have become more common and my comfort level with making changes has risen, I have given up the idea of dual booting with an ASOP/GE/MIUI/etc. ROM as my daily driver & TW for wi-fi calling, and am now back to focusing on getting as stripped-down a TW as possible. I care nothing for eye candy and just want the quickest & most stable setup, and TW has fit the bill best for me.
TW (by a slight margin)
I prefer TW because of the camera
AOSP is still very snappy but TW is catching up to that standard (for me)
I use stock TW unrooted 4.3 btw
For me it depends on what is available at the time. Right now I've got the latest 4.3.1 cyanogenmod nightly:

AOSP all the way, I hate touchwiz it's so ugly.
TouchWiz seems to have much better battery life. I do prefer stock because I hate a lot of extra cruft but if that can be removed, it's not so bad.
Plus Wi-Fi calling is awesome for battery life.
I know a certain someone has gotten wifi calling to work on aosp.. Still waiting to get a hold of our myself tho..

On the S4 AOSP?
I know it works on AOSP for the HTC One, but if you know someone who has it working on the S4 AOSP roms, you should advise that person that there is a considerable bounty built up of people willing to click the donate button a few times for a working installable Wifi Calling APK.
interesting to read the comments. I've been going back and forth between TW and AOSP ROMS. Is having the newest Android release the only major advantage of AOSP over TW? I don't think the look of AOSP is a valid reason since you can install launchers (i.e. Nova Launcher) to get the AOSP look on a TW ROM.

exactly.. I love aosp but im using tw with nova. I gotta have battery life
what changes does samsung make kernel side? Are the improvements made to the asop kernel? It does seem like TW has better battery life...
also if someone has wifi calling ported... why is this staying in the shadows??
I like cm 10.2 stable, my daily driver, but when wicked v9 comes out, I'm going to be jumping on that real quick.

Am I reading this correctly? A 4.4 GE with wifi calling exists?

Need a ROM and new to S3.

I am coming from a Nexus 4 (screen cracked and that sucks). I am very familiar with CM and AOKP (always ran AOKP on my Nexus devices). But I decided to get an S3 because of Wi-Fi calling (there is a hefty bounty out there for getting it on a Nexus 4 BTW). So I need a ROM that is as bare bones and customizable as possible but I need Wi-Fi calling to work. And I read there was/is and issue with getting Google Wallet to work on the S3. So if there is a ROM that can also make that work, that would be great. But my other 3 needs are priority. Thanks in advance.
Wi-Fi Calling only works on Touchwiz (Read Stock Samsung) based Roms. It will not work on AOSP or CM for that matter. There are some good Touchwiz based Roms. S3Rx is one that comes to mind. There is a barebones stock Rom too by @saranhai.
I don't use Touchwiz so I am not current on new roms in that arena.

I checked out both of them. They are pretty close. I may go with the S3rX though. Looks like what I am wanting. Something that does not look TW but has Wi-Fi calling.
Best cm based is gummy
