How come so little 'custom roms' all based on stock .. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

How come there is so little custom roms? like theres alot of stock based or AOSP based romsand even though there is MIUI last i tried it was very laggy (read around and read something about using popcorn kernel) how come theres no like iounno TouchWiz based rom like using touchwiz launcher or stuff like that im not trying to be stuck up or rude or unappriciative but if oyu look at phones like the Captivate its blooming in custom roms then the Gnexus is all stock based is there a reason as to why? developers havent gotten this phone?

My guess is because you chose a device that is AOSP pure google. If you chose a Touchwiz device like the Captivate or GS3 you would have TW ROMs, AOSP ROMs, AOKP ROMs, MIUI ROMs...and hybrids of those. It is easier to remove TW then it is to add it.

The captivate is two years old lol, and it has roms from Froyo to jb. don't forget launchers can also give the appearance of tw, blur, sense etc.

[Q] Anyway To Install TouchWiz on AOSP or AOKP 4.1.2

I would like to know if there is any possible way to run TouchWiz on any 4.1.2 ROMs that are out. I searched with no success. I ran AOSP and AOKP and I must say I really do like some of the features like the pull down notification bar... I do like to use TouchWiz though, I wonder if I'm in the minority or the majority on using that launcher...
I would like to keep the Samsung Apps that come on the S III too... I know I'm not asking for much HAHA

Not saying it can't be done, but honestly it would defeat the purpose of aosp based roms. You have to pick a side, touchwiz or aosp. If you like touchwiz then just try some of the LJ7 based roms that aren't wizless. Free sgs3 is a good choice for tw jb.
Thats true but its been done. There was a mod made for the galaxy nexus that accomplished this but it wont work on jellybean. You could always multiboot. Got stock jb with no root and i dualboot aokp with it. Just throwin that out there.
Could always try the NOWIZAOSPMOD rom too. You almost cant believe that its touchwized based, dude is a genius.

Well i know ive made it work on the e4gt and s3 back on cm9 . Didn't work last time i tried it on the s3 with 4.1.2 aokp. Everything installs but tw launcher fc's
Thank you guy for the replies and a good point was made about TouchWiz being on an AOSP wouldn't make it an AOSP anymore! HA
My main goal is to have 4.1.2 on my phone with TouchWiz, as it stands now, I only see AOSP and AOKP with 4.1.2 and not any other ROMs like Sonic Teams FreeGS3
now this is what I'm talking about!

[Q] How to tell which ROMs use s-pen?

So, while trying to discern the differences between different ROMs, I came across a post talking about differences between cm and tw ROMs and that tw ROMs retain the functionality. Did I understand correctly?
Is there an indicator in ROM headings or similar that indicate this?
Thank you!

Yep, TouchWiz has s-pen features, AOSP based, CM, AOKP etc, do not.
CM and other AOSP based you can use the spen as a stylus without the software features.
The new MIUI will have a lot of the spen functions as it has a TW base
Just read the OP of the ROMs and if its TW based you know it'll have the spen capabilities
If it is 4.2.x then forget it.
If it is 4.1.x but has any reference to aosp or aokp or paranoid or cm then probably forget it.
If the screen shot looks like a normal phone like same launcher then it for sure supports it.
Generally all rom devs tell if it is Samsung based or built from source or kang.
Samsung based will support s pen.

Prefer stock TW or custom roms

Hey guys, this is my first post on here but been a member for a while. Been a member since I've had my og evo 4g. Now i have a s3 but I've been wondering what you guys like or prefer more...TW or custom roms?
Quick side story:
I like touchwiz and the stock Samsung features/apps but also like the few improvements of 4.2 or even 4.1.2 for the other s3's. Because of this I tried finding 4.2/4.1.2 TW custom rom for tmobile s3 but failed and accidently bricked my s3 (flashed international rom...I know, I feel so stupid. I'll read more next time). Anyway its at samsung being repaired. But this made me begin to wonder if anyone else on here felt the way I do of Touchwiz and Aosp.
Back to the topic though, which do you guys prefer stock TW or custom roms like 4.1.2/4.2 and why?
Also any suggestions on what I could do (when i get my s3 back) since I kinda like both would be greatly appreciated.
Which do you like, Tw or aosp?
Why do you like the choice you made?
Why don't you prefer Touchwiz or Aosp?
Are there any features you like from both?

I love the stock option on the wicked rom by evil1art. And I have a question, they repair your s3 or send you a new one if you bricked it? Wouldn't they know you tried to modify it and void your warranty?
I prefer TW. I don't understand why people want ASOP. It's missing so many essential functions.
I much prefer aosp. Specifically speaking, pacman or paranoidkangdroid roms. They're so much smoother, faster, better battery performance, and customization far beyond your needs.

I like like its customization...plus thats the only way of getting 4.2/4.1.2 on the t-mobile s3 as of right now. 4.2 also improves battery life. But I really like TW and the stock camera/features/apps that come with it.

Yes, exactly why I like aosp roms but my problem is I also like the look and some of the stock features of TW. Basically want a mixture of stock and aosp features. So I'm guessing there's no way of getting the look, features and camera on one of these roms?

Techinically it should void it but it's hard-bricked, wont turn on/charge/nothing, so no way of telling. I just told them it wouldnt turn on at all, left out the part about flashing roms though lol. Im guessing they'll replace the motherboard, thats what happened to others who've been in my situation here on xda. But if they cant fix like that they'll be willing to give me a new one. Right now my repair status is on "repair in progress". Either way I'll be grateful of getting back my/a perfect working s3.

+1. I am currently using liquidsmooth and it is really nice. But there are a few little bugs. Call volume and headset issues, common in aosp roms. Going back to TW. Bugs aside though, I prefer aosp.

Yeah thats true, thats something I don't like about aosp roms. Its like the roms are great enhancements to the is but you have to deal with these little bugs that aren't that bad just kinda annoying.
I'm considering just leaving my s3 stock when I get it back.

I'm on same boat. I hate to admit three were days we hated TW. But Samsung had done great job lately.
You can always try some combinations. .like stock rom+nova/Apex launcher for aosp look but has TW features. .or 4.2 roms with nova launcher and GS3 theme for stock look but latest features like quick settings. Or there is a rom 'Dandroid' rom which already themed to look like aosp. Also there are new apps that offer same thing 4.2 is offering like quicksettings.. I'm running heavily debloated stock rom with action launcher.. Great battery life and I can still enjoy all that features I came to like from this new touchwiz nature UX ui.. I hope you find what works for you. .

If this thread is going to stay up can we at least do it right? Make some thread rules and guide lines and maybe a poll on top??? These threads always get shut down because of people bashing other roms, or other users for their opinions. If the OP is rogue, I'd gladly take over the thread and make it a good thread for people to use. If the opp

The GS3 was the first phone I've ever purchased that I instantly was really impressed with it stock. Samsung did a bang-up job with the latest Touchwiz, seriously.
But the tinkerer in me and the desire for optimization made me take a look at custom ROMs anyway. What hit the spot for me was Wicked. It's everything you love about stock, with lots of options for tweaking. It's really a brilliantly built ROM. I currently use it with the stock kernel, but with Nova Prime Launcher over it.
With the latest version of Wicked (v8), it's hard to believe how much goodness the developer has packed under the hood. You really have to play around with it to appreciate it. And again, all while retaining all that's great about stock Touchwiz.
I've toyed with the idea of checking out a CM10 / AOSP type ROM, but there's a lot I'd miss about stock. So until I get a second GS3 to tinker with (which is never), I'll most likely be sticking with TW based custom ROMs for the long haul.
I was fine with TW except for the home screens and very limited number of rows and columns that couldn't be changed.
I just use a launcher now. I might try a TW based ROM - but what I really need is the native wifi calling - I'd try a non-TW ROM if I didn't need it.

Wicked comes with an optional 5x5 modified Touchwiz launcher.
I prefer pure android experience as my 1st android device was a Nexus S.
1st day I got my GS3, couldn't stand the BS that came w/ touchwiz. It made the phone feel very sluggish. 1st thing I did was switch over to Paranoid Android and immediately you can feel how much faster everything responds.
Simple test is opening your app drawer and then pushing the Home button. TW rom will have a lag 1-2 seconds. AOSP/AOKP/CM is pretty instant.
If you are afraid of risks of going custom and bricking, no wrong in staying stock. Stock is more stable obviously and custom does have the price of instability for performance.

The home button delay was just a setting in S - Voice. Turn off that one switch and that delay is gone.
Most of that "BS" isn't Touchwiz, but carrier added bloat. TW based custom ROMs like Wicked take care of all that junk, even the S apps if you don't want them.

I like both TW and aosp/aokp.... When I get bored of one, I just flash back to the other. I do like some key features that TW has and I like key features that aosp/aokp has. I'm glad we can were able to switch from one to the other with little to no effort.

I have had this issue in the past... But with Charlieb260's 4.1.2 TW port, it does not break gps.
I was on 4.2.1 and flashed 4.1.2 TW and everything worked fine.

Are TW roms typically more stable than AOSP roms?

Thread title.
I was just wondering because TW roms are based on the current released version for the phone whereas AOSP roms are the latest android version ported over to the phone, is this correct?
My experience is yes, tw is more stable. Although aosp roms are for versions unreleased to our phone, such as 4.2.2. They are usually pretty stable and get better with time. It just takes time for developers to fix things. But you miss out on things such as being able to update prl or profile in the Aosp ROMs. AOSP ROMs aren't necessarily ported though, a lot are built from source, but I get what you are saying.

Thanks, for the longest time (up until today) I never saw the point in TW roms.
I was pretty naive and thought they were inferior in every way but the more I look into it I see there are lots of pros and cons to both

It really depends on who is building the Rom... right now, with them working out the bugs with the new 3.4 kernel must aosp roms are going to have some bugs.... tw is great though, more goodies in them and I generally get better performance and battery with tw roms... once the 3.4 kernel gets ironed out things should be pretty on par with tw on aosp though... I know of an almost completely stable 3.4 kernel, but it can't be mentioned here..

Which rom have you liked the most?

Just sharing my Experiences, and hoping you would share yours.
In my case, it was JMT6, which gave me the best battery life imaginable. I am really missing it...
AOKP, except it sounded like I was underwater despite trying every fix I could find. Stock rooted and debloated is my new favorite. Ever since the JB update it has been running smooth, and touchwiz was greatly improved too. Stock ICS was awful, constantly freezing.

i never really felt anything special with AOKP...
Well, I like the "pure" Android roms, and I like to stick to tried and true roms, so far I have only tried AOKP and cyanogenmod as far as AOSP roms. I felt AOKP was less buggy than cyanogenmod, but in both cases call quality was terrible.

LiquidSmooth, Milestone, and Jellybam are the best jb roms that I used. Foxstar, Slickmod, Juggernaut, and Beastmod for gb. And too many ics roms Jedi Mind Trick, Infamous, Darkside Evolution, and Extremexperia just some that I remember. But stock is completely bland and boring. Gotta be themed with custom bootanimations, audio mods, themes, build prop and int.d tweaks, overclocking for cpu and gpu, or it just ain't gonna fly with me. Just my two cents on this topic.
On gingerbread, my favorite was juggernaut. On ICS I stuck with stock debloated. Jellybean I have to say it's the JMT Jellybean. This might be the best rom my phone has ever run period. Ptmr3 definitely is a very talented dev.
Always stuck with touchwiz ROMs, id say the new Jb Jedi mind trick is pretty damn good, but personally the new infamous Jb is where my hearts at
