[Q] What do you think I should do? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey everybody,
I'm currently an Xperia Play owner planning to upgrade on a 350 euro budget (about $450) to either a Samsung Galaxy Nexus or a Samsung Galaxy Note. Which do you recommended I buy? I think the Gnex is by far the most beautiful device I've ever seen but I do plan to play a lot of graphically intense games, for example Modern Combat 4, both GTAs and the new upcoming Real Racing 3. I've heard that the PowerVR SGX540 in the Gnex struggles to play intense games because of the HD screen, is this true? This is the reason I've opted for the Gnote because of it's Mali 400mp which I would then clock at 400mhz to give me close to GS3 gaming performance.
If you have any reasons I should go with one of these devices please comment below and also if you any other recommendations on which phone I should get barring these two I'd be happy to take them into consideration.
What I want from my new phone:
- 4.5" HD 1280x720 or more display
- At least a dual core
- Great gaming performance
- Running on at least ICS (or planned upgrade to JB like the Gnote)
- 1080p recording
- At least 1GB RAM
- Front facing camera
- Decent battery performance (doesn't have to be amazing just able to get me through 10hrs at least)
Thanks in advance,
Christopher.

If you're going for gaming, take the note. If you want everything else, gnex.

Why get the Galaxy Nexus when you can get the Nexus 4 instead?

I see your point, but the Nexus 4 only has 8GB of internal memory and no SD also I cannot get the Nexus 4 shipped to Ireland for under 350 euro. Can you suggest any website I could find it for under 350?

No the removable battery doesn't bother me at all.

Know what? I agree with eddyos. Save up some more and go for the nexus 4 with 16gb, by all means! You'll get the best of both worlds. I meant current android updates, dev community, wide knowledge base by everything else. Gaming is ok on the gnex, i dont do much other than gtaIII, but it does have the occassional lag.

AW: [Q] What do you think I should do?
I love my gnex, but i wouldnt buy one if i had the chance to get an nexus 4 instead.

IMHO the nexus 4 is a stepping stone; the alpha so to speak. I wouldn't get it.
If you can wait, then wait a little and see, great things are supposed to happen this year in terms of new and awesome phones.
- Niamul

I see where you all are coming from, but my Xperia Play has a problem where the screen goes fuzzy for about 30 minutes so I would much rather get something now than wait another 3-4 months. Also I'm already breaking the bank at 300 euro, I put 350 up to see what else I could get because I could borrow 50 euro from my parents (I'm only 16)

Gnex is to old, maybe android 5 is the last update we get official from google.

8 or 16GB, your choice!
Can you not use the Play Store in Ireland?

According to Handtec they're getting the Galaxy Nexus back in soon, quite cheap too...might be worth checking out

It's not even 8GB, the formatted memory will be about 6.5GB which would not be enough as most of the high end games I want to play take up on average 1.5GB each, plus I like to keep a nice library of Skrillex in my pocket And I fancy myself a bit of an amateur photographer.
If I was to buy the Nexus 4 16GB it's gonna cost me close to 500 euro so my question is if I buy it in three months will it still be on top of its game?
And no, Ireland is not supported in the Google Play Store pitty :/

Yea I heard the display is super crisp but I would really love 1280x720 display as when I'm watching a YouTube video it takes up every last pixel. I think its so cool when its a full screen video. as far as I know the nexus 4 has a 1280x768 which is only a tad bit over but it means it has a 16:10 aspect ratio which means black bars on YouTube videos! :/

It sounds to me one of the BLU Quattros might be up your alley. They are releasing 3 new phones gnex size to note size, pentaband tegra 3 quad core unlocked. The most expensive one being $350 u.s. I'm actually considering one myself because my girlfriend needs a new phone.

You sir, have quite possibly changed my mind about getting the Galaxy Nexus. I'm still using my N1, hoping for a 32gb GN. But if the specs of the SIII are true, it would make more sense to get it instead of the GN.
Nah, I'm pretty sure the next OTA upgrade from Google will give us 32 GB, together with the 8 MP camera upgrade. I also heard rumours that in Q2 they will upgrade the SGN to quad-core, also via OTA.
I want me a Galaxy Nexus but not for almost 700.00 dollars. I'll wait until the 32GB version comes out and it will drive down the price of the 16GB version.

Completely unsubstantiated. Besides, always waiting for the next big thing means you spend more of your time waiting and less of your time enjoying what's currently available. I went from the Nexus One to the Nexus S to the Galaxy Nexus and never looked back. You have one life to live, don't spend it waiting

Even if they do unveil the SGSIII at CES in February, it will be another two months before it released anywhere... and then you have a 1 in 4 chance its released on your carrier. It could be another 3-4 months before it hits your carrier. And by then the rumors will already have begun for the Nexus 4 so you might as well wait another 6 months for that to come out and then here we are again.
Cycling every other Nexus is a pretty solid plan, considering my N1 still works flawlessly.

Is Galaxy nexus worth buy over the LG nexus 4 once its released ??

Hii guys,
So ive been saving up some money to buy my new phone. I initially chose the GNex since it is cheaper and other stuff. I'm from india and i thought of buying it from ebay india.
Anyway now that LG nexus 4 release date is close(will it be released in india this november ??) i'm wondering if its still a good move to buy the GNex. I heard that the LG nexus 4 have 2 gb ram etc etc better specs than GNexus ?? Is that true ??
So, i thought of ordering Galaxy nexus this week. Is that a good choice ??
If someone could help me making my choice i would thank it very much
Thanks in advance
Use common sense....plus they pulled gnex from playstore

Needing LTE or being on Verizon or any other CDMA network are the only two reasons to stay with the GNexus.
lolz.. with that spec and with that price and with you made it obvious... you still dont know the answer?? the spec are way too high than gnex. its a different case if already have a gnex, but since you didnt... oh well "go go for Nexus 4" lolz...
i'm a Nexus collector so i'm getting it while I can.

We don't know if the nexus 4 will launch in India or not. Or when it would launch, if it does. Most people say it would likely be priced at 25k but no one knows for sure.
If you are willing to wait for more than a month for a possible release (which may or may not even happen) or are ready to spend over 25k to order it online and have it shipped, then the nexus 4 is a good choice.
The galaxy nexus is available right now for pretty cheap but it isn't as good as the N4.

It would have been so awesome if they still offered the GNex for like $99 off contract, that would have downright incredible, but obviously would have cut sales from the N4.

The Nexus 4 has a better CPU, GPU, more RAM, slightly bigger and higher resolution LCD screen, wireless charging, and larger battery.
Yet unless something happens to my Galaxy Nexus I'm not upgrading because I've decided there are two things I love about the Galaxy Nexus that isn't available for the Nexus 4:
1) AMOLED screen. I don't care that it's pentile. Maybe my eyesight sucks because I can't tell the difference between pentile and non pentile 720P screens. I can tell the AMOLED screens produce colors I like.
2) Swappable battery. This is crucial for me.
With that said... I wouldn't spend more than $200-$230 on a used Galaxy Nexus... because let's face it... the Nexus 4 is still a beast of a device for the money.
even im eager to buy one here in India.. but i think u shud see this http://pricebaba.com/blog/coming-up-nokia-lumia-510-lg-l9-htc-8x-one-x
Expected price is around 30k in India.. not confirmed though.. Saw in some italian blog too that even there its going to be priced around 550 Euros according to some credible sources.. so if it costs more than double the amt compared with US, I think getting a Gnex makes sense or ask some one to get it from the US.
we are always deprived of all good things in the world or shud pay a lot to get them.. sucks

So seems like KLP at the end =P

Well a drawing made by Manu Cornet (Google's employee) "almost" confirms the name of the next Android version

I'm pretty sure Schmidt already dropped the name in an interview a whole back but it's good to have some "confirmation".

If thats true, that sucks for the people who just bought it. I dont think google is that cruel.
Could be a new device category. Android chrome book? Project glass? Improved Nexus Q? They've established a nexus line with the 4,7, and 10 so the only logical thing to do is expand on it.
I'd like to see Google expand the Nexus range by releasing some sort of budget smaller-screen Nexus phone that can go on sales in the Play Store (was hoping the Galaxy Nexus would continue to be sold on the Play Store as a budget device but they ended up just completely removing it). Probably not a good idea to launch a new Android version on a budget phone though lol.

Yes, that's exactly what I was implying in my previous post that Google should have sold the GN alongside the N4 with a reduced price as a budget option, but they decided to discontinue it.
If they managed to get a top end device made for ridiculously cheap why not a mid level one for even cheaper. Everyone benefits (probably except phone manufacturers and retailers who are still trying to sell unlocked phones at ridiculously inflated prices).

I have a Nexus S 4G and from what I've experienced from a friends Gnex and read online about the Gnex, can REALLY say it's a mid-level phone? It might be on the lower end of high-end... But IMHO its still not a mid-level phone... Its better for everyone that they don't sell the Gnex cheaper because that would drop the resale value and essentially saturate the market with a "cheap" phone... Not saying the phone is cheaply made, but people think a phone is cheap if its not +300...

+1. It's comical, yet sad, to see people actually ascribe some kind of meaning to it.

Maybe mid-level isn't the right word, but it's definitely not one of the current high-end phones. Anyway Apple, for example, has always been selling their previous models with reduced prices as a budget offering so it's not a strange concept. Anyway, saturating the market with good but cheap(er) phones isn't exactly a bad idea. If anything it encourages more manufacturers to make better, cheaper phones to stay competitive, which is good for consumers.

No need for speculations; the author did mention to not read too much into it ..

How good is this phone still?

Hi,
About a year and a half ago I went from an iPhone 3 to a Galaxy Gio (my first android phone) and I've been happy ever since with Android. But the phone is on it's last legs, so time for a new phone.
Now with the arrival of the Nexus 4 I was really excited about it and was thinking about getting one.
But the issues with delivery, the fact it can't be found in the Netherlands and the fact that no retailer sells it for the 299e it's supposed to go (LG told a big Spanish retailer to sell it for 599 I read yesterday, MediaMarkt in Germany sells it for 395) made me look for an alternative.
I don't want to spend too much, so my budget is around 300 as I recently bought an iPad for the "heavy" things such as games.
I purely want a phone with a large screen that is able to play games you play for a few minutes. Stuff like Temple Run, racegames etc etc.
I'm now leaning towards the Google Nexus, my question is how future proof is this phone? Will it be able to run games that come out, say, the next year or so? Will updates after 4.2 also appear for the Galaxy Nexus?
I found a brand new one for 249e, is it still worth the money? Many thanks in advance.
Definitely worth it . Over a Year old and its still one of the best phones on the market . It has no problem with any current games and I don't see that changing for some time. Dual cores are still on top! a quad core is almost pointless ....for now. They still put the dual core chip sets in the galaxy Slll.

They put dual core S4 in the American S3 because of LTE not playing well with Exynos Quad. Same for the HTC One X/S.
I just bought my second one. It is a very very capable device. Personally I don't game on my phone aside from the occasional Bad Piggies or GTA Vice City when I'm bored at work, I use my Nexus 7 for all my gaming needs, but when it comes to every day computing it is still a top performer. Due in large part to the Project Butter enhancements that make it super speedy. Switching between applications or multi tasking is a breeze.

People still underestimate the dual core processors, the Snapdragon S4 dual core is still a beast processor.

It's aight, still haven't found a phone worthy to upgrade to
Why not the Nexus 4 when it comes into stock? Same price, and next version of the phone.

A lot of us feel the LG Nexus is a step down in terms of build quality and the cost isn't really worth the benefits. Yeah it has more ram and processors but the camera is just as sad compared to the what it could/should have been. Its just not worth that extra cost. For instance I bought a mint GSM Nexus about 2 weeks ago, it is 6 months old and I got 4 OEM batteries + charger, and 7 cases including a SGP Neo Hybrid and a mess of screen protectors for 299. I would have paid no less then 399 w/tax & ship for a Nexus4 with nothing else.
It would be better for most of us to keep on chugging with the Gnex until the next Nexus device comes out that should be a good sized leap from the N4. Phones have that 2 cycle evolutionary leap. Like how the first HTC phones were great and the 2nd series (sensation....) Sucked pretty bad. But the OneX is great and the OneX+ isn't a huge improvement. Same thing with the Nexus phones. The Nexus One was spectacular. 1GHZ processor when 550 was unheard of. 512 ram, when 256 was normal and a S-AMOLED screen. The Nexus S was moderate. A curved screen, NFC and 1gb ram ( I could be wrong about the ram) were the only major improvements. But then the Galaxy Nexus introduced a dual core processor, huge 720P HD screen, on screen keys and a lot more.
I think the next Nexus will be huge

This phone rocks and I love it but recently 4.2.1 has been giving me issues and I feel like a beta tester for Google. Don't say flash factory images, I did and I factory reset a few times. Hoping on 4.2.2 to fix the issues otherwise this phone is still extremely capable and does everything I need it do and can easily last me another year.

A. The Droid had a 600mhz TI omap processor, same as the Palm Pre so 550mhz was definitely "heard of".
B. The Nexus 1 had a regular Amoled display.
C. The Nexus S had 345 RAM. Advertised as 512 same as the S1.
D. The GNex didn't "introduce" anything but the 720p display.

That's how I want to use it too. Mostly for browsing, communicating and a game from time to time.
Plus it's very customizable with all the ROM's and kernels I saw here. .
I guess you guys will have a new member on your side soon .

Because nobody sells it for 299 in Europe. The 299 version goes for 395. Black market at the moment is 500e.
Plus there is a 7 week waiting time for the people that already ordered. It will take well over 2 to 3 months before it will be widely available. Who knows how long it will take before it's available for 299.
Maybe in a year or so I'll upgrade to the 4 .
E. I'd love to hear how the gnex "introduced" a 720p display.

Yep gnex is still an excellent device. Before I got my nexus 7 I was playing dead trigger and nova 3 on my gnex with no problems, only game my gnex ever struggled with was gta3. As far as web browsing and phone purposes, works like a phone is supposed too.
I intend on using my gnex at least until the next nexus is released, maybe longer.

Find a phone that had one before it.
My friend asked the same question. It's old and it may be dropped by Google (look at the Nexus S).

Should I buy the Galaxy Nexus?

Hey guys,
I am looking at getting a new phone and my requirements were:
1GB RAM
4.3+ inch screen
720p display.
The Galaxy Nexus caught my eye as it has all those things. I don't have a huge budget (£150, or €175, $225)But I am slightly concerned. Firstly because it is an old piece of kit. Now, that doesn't bother me if it performs well and gets the latest updates, but that's what I am worried about. Secondly because of Dev Support. I need a phone that will be supported for at least a year.
Please tell me what I should do. I am willing to buy a used device. If you think I should get something else, please let me know as to what device you are thinking.
Thanks!
Don't buy this phone.

Extend your budget go for a Nexus 4 or maybe wait for the next Nexus. Galaxy Nexus is a great phone but let's face it, it's been around for a while... And I doubt if it'll get official updates for the coming year
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
If you want it, then buy an extended battery with it and IMHO one should also buy the charging port flex board which may stop working anytime.
Whether or not it gets official updates, it will receive the custom ROMs. But then again why would you go for a 2 year old product?
Get the n4 or the n5 when it releases
Get the s4 or wait for new nexus at end of year.

Go for nexus 4.....though I'm not saying that Galaxy Nexus is not good, but it has now become somewhat old and won't get support from Google as Nexus 4 will get. Though you always will have support from the custom ROMs....but not stock ROM from Google itself.....so go for Nexus 4 rather than GN.

Screw n4 and its iphone-ish glass back
Okay, popular opinion suggests that the N4 is my choice. Is there anywhere I can pick it up within my budget?
Thanks!

The n4 is old as well, considering the new nexus will be out in a few months, the n4 has been a blunder from day one an forgotten about due to its terrible launch an unavailability, so people just decided to boycott it an skip it altogether, lg have even said themselves it wasn't on the list of priorities to get that phone out, I don't think google would bother asking lg a second time to make another nexus with that kind of poor effort or attitude.

So here I am.
I have been watching a load of videos comparing it to Samsung flagships, HTC flagships and some weird devices made by a fruit company. The hardware has EVERYTHING I want for my upgrade. Almost double every spec to my current phone. My only concern is updates. Does this device have 4.2.2 Officially? Will there be 4.3 and 5.0 for it unofficially, if not officially? I need it to last for a year.
If you can answer my questions, I will be extremely grateful. My other option is the Xperia S, but it costs too much, bigger camera then I need and no official 4.1
Thanks Again!
Android 4.2.2 is officialy suported on the galaxy nexus and 4.3 will normally be that too but for 5.0 nobody knows.
And yeah I love the phone and it's getting old but it is still a good phone

Thanks man that's the answer I was looking for. I am looking for a Specs upgrade, not a date upgrade.
Do you know anywhere that would sell a used GNex at a low-ish price?

Not true, it has official 4.1.2 and unoffial, pure 4.2.2 AOSP (where everything but 1080p recording works).

Can anyone suggest:
An extended battery
A case (Gel Case, but hard and protective)
A screen protector
I would like these to be low cost and high quality. Thanks!

I bought mine a few months ago for exactly the same as your budget and I am more than happy with it yes it's old but not everyone can afford to get a nexus 4 and to be honest it's a bit to much like the iPhone with it's glass back the gnex gives you plenty of bang for your buck IMO
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If you don't need the good cam, HDMI and so on, go for a GNex. As far as dev support's concerned there's no need to be worried, even the Google Nexus S (maybe the WFS too?) will get Android 5 (unofficially).

I've had mine for about 6 months and have tried just about every ROM and kernel out there for it and it's been great. I think you would be fine with it for a year or so with the support it has here.
