[Q] Missing "software updates" option in settings>about - HTC One X

Hello all,
I'm new here so I hope I posted this in the right place and that this wasn't asked and answered before (I looked and didn't find)
This week I bought a new HTC ONE X from a local store, and I now noticed it does NOT have a "Software updates" option in Settings > About
(from what I saw, this option should have appeared above the "Tell HTC and error reporting" option... )...
If it helps --- from the Settings > About I know that:
My android version is: 4.0.4
My sense version is: 4.1
My software number is: 2.17.401.2
My kernerl is: 2.63.9.4-g090b42e [email protected] #1 SMP FREEMPT
My build number is: 2.17.401.2 CL89015 release-keys
I also installed CID GETTER and it says my CID is: HTC_621
When I explored some more I also saw I have:
ro.aa.mainsku: 401
ro.aa.maincid: HTC_001
ro.build.sense.version: 4.0
ro.cid: HTC_621
I don't really understand much about those things so I don't know which other bits of info might be relevant....
PLEASE - I would really appreciate if someone could help me understand why I don't have the "Software updates" option, and how can I update the device to the latest android etc.?
Thanks in advance

Re: [Q] Missing "software updates" option in settings>about
I bet you are running a custom rom and with that you can't update ! You need to get back to stock
Hold the power button and the volume - button togheter for a lifetime and wait as ling as it takes for the phone to boot into the bootloader.
I bet you find this
Bootloader : unlocked

Thanks

Hi Mr Hofs,
Thanks for replying so quickly ----
Yes, you are right, I went into the bootloader thing and it says UNLOCKED
and then:
ENDAVOURU PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-NONE
MICROP-None
Radio-NONE
eMMC-bootmode: disabled
CPU-bootmode: disabled
HW Secure boot: enabled
What does it mean? How can I verify that this is indeed a custom rom?
Needless to say, I'm not the one who unlocked it so.....
Should I complain to the store I bought it from?
Does it mean my warranty is void??
And how can I restore it to "stock"?
Thanks!

Hell yeah its a second hand phone !!! As they sold it to you as new.....its not !!!

I don't think it's second hand ---
The phone looked brand new, came into the original HTC Box, and had the protective htc cover they come with...
I also asked and confirmed with them that the phone is new and not refurbished...
I think they probably just replaced the rom (I know that some Israeli importers/stores do that, usually to enable hebrew on older phones etc.)
Is there a simple way to restore it to stock rom without the help of the store?

Re: [Q] Missing "software updates" option in settings>about
Are u kidding me wow !
Well we might restore it to stock. You need to know about fastboot commands and you need the fastboot files on the pc
Nee is a tut on fastboot commands
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605720
Basically it comes to this, you need to put the phone in the bootloader and see a res text "fastboot usb" then you have to open a commandprompt inside the folder on the pc where your fastboot files are. There you type
Fastboot devices
If the serial pops up you are good to go

thanks

but I'm still not sure I understand..
what do you mean by "serial"? serial of the device? what do I do with the serial?
(sorry for being so clueless about this...)

Re: [Q] Missing "software updates" option in settings>about
If the command shows you a serial number you are good to go to flash recoverys and boot.img files
So do you get a serial ?

Now you type there
Fastboot oem readcid
and
Fastboot getvar version-main
The outcome of those 2 commands are important, those are the "real" info we need

Re: [Q] Missing "software updates" option in settings>about
Okey you can do this :
1: download this RUU
http://androidfiles.org/ruu/securek...Radio_1.1204.104.14_release_259284_signed.exe
2: charge the battery to 100%
3: put the phone in the fastboot usb mode
4: type this command in the commandprompt
Fastboot oem lock
It will relock the bootloader to be able to install the ruu
5: keep the phone in the fastboot usb mode after locking the bootloader
6: right click on the ruu.exe and execute with admin rights
This will flash the phone back to 100% stock, when the ruu flashed successfully you boot the phone and go into
Settings - about - softwareupdates and update the phone with all the updates you can get. That should het you to JB !

Ok, thanks for the detailed explanation :good: -- I just have a few more questions:
1. Is there a way to be sure this is the right file? Could it be that my version is wrong or something? or is it unmodifiable?
2. The file seems to match version: 1.29.709.7 and i have 1.29.709.12.... is this okay..? I read somewhere you should not use lower numbers, only higher or identical...
3. Would this wipe the data of the phone (photos , installed programs, etc.) -- or just replace the underlying operating-system?
I am charging my battery now....

1 yes its the right file .... 1.29.709 has to match (if it fails i have more options )
2 see number 1
3 it wipes EVERYTHING ....... So make a backup of the sdcard as well just to be sure (i hear different things about the sdcard so lets be safe and back it up)
if your main version was 2.17.709 you could not use a 1.29.709 ruu then you need at least a 2.17.709 ruu or higher. We cant downgrade but we can use the same base number or a higher one. Because we have s-on devices. If we had s-off we would be able to flash anything we like.....

[Q] Possible brick, and not sure what to do. HELP

Introduction:
Alright, so I decided to make a whole new thread for this since it's kind of an unique situation.
Got my old man a One V for Christmas, and he loved it, then wanted me to root it. Having just rooted my HTC incredible S, I took the job.
We came across this all-in-one rootkit, thanks to the guy who made it by the way.
I can't post the link here, but the thread is called
[TOOL] HTC One V All-In-One Toolkit V2.0 [12-23-2012] [PERM ROOT] [Noob-Proof
It was pretty nerve racking, but we managed to get through it. We did not flash any kernels, no roms, etc. Just basically followed the basic step by step video. We were using the TWRP Recovery GSM version. Everything was going smoothly...
Until the "Perm Root" step...
When it came time to actually root it and put on Superuser, he noticed that it said on the One V's screen that doing this may cause damage to your phone/brick it. Then he basically said, "nah man, I changed my mind. the phone might get messed. let's just stop it."
We stopped it and it didn't cross our minds for weeks.
So as of then, the HTC One V is as follows:
- ***Unlocked*** bootloader
- Has TWRP 2.3.3.0 GSM on it (correctly done, the phone is GSM)
- NOT rooted
The Problem
My dad was then using it just last night, connected to Wi-Fi and he installed an update on accident. It was like a 40mb update file. Now, the phone doesn't seem to want to boot into Android. I don't know if it's a bootloop or what.
Basically it's just the white HTC screen that says "quietly brilliant". There's no extra red text or anything. It just stays on this screen.
However, I'm still able to reach the bootloader, so I tried a factory reset. I wiped the cache, then did a factory reset through TWRP. Again, after hitting "Reboot System Now" it just goes back and stays on the HTC quietly brilliant screen.
What do I do? He really enjoyed using this phone and we don't want it to be a waste.
One more thing: we did not back anything up. No nandroid, nothing.:crying:
please XDA forums, this is my first post. I need your help.
Check what your device CID is and there may be a RUU for your device to restore everything back to normal.
What you need to do once you have the RUU
a- in fastboot mode - relock the bootloader with command fastboot oem lock
b- still in fastboot mode - run the RUU, it will restore all the recovery, boot, system back to stock.
Download the correct ruu go to boot loader then recovery and flash it and boom your back to stock

What is the CID number and where do I find it in the phone?
Also, is there a link somewhere that matches up CID numbers with the required RUU?
Download cid getter from play store it gives ur cid.

Let's worry about the first part... checking CID number.
Are you familiar with fastboot files and fastboot command ?
Put you device in bootloader, fastboot mode.
Run this fastboot command - fastboot oem readcid
Example: HTC__044 is my device CID number
Code:
C:\Users\ckpv5\Desktop\fastboot>fastboot oem readcid
...
(bootloader) cid: HTC__044
OKAY [ 0.005s]

Would I need to follow the directions in this video?

After that, would going through those steps you posted be possible?

As you managed to unlock the bootloader, I guess you have the right driver installed to your PC.
As you said you can go to bootloader, so I guess you know how to get there again.
Go to bootloader, when you see hboot on it, press power once to go to fastboot (you will see the word fastboot on it highlighted n red).
Download the attached simple script that I made for you, extract it to your PC desktop.
Connect your phone to PC, now you should see the word fastboot change to fastboot usb (still highlighted in red).
Open the CID_checker folder, run the CID_checker.bat and let us know the CID written there.
Then we will see whether there is available RUU for your device or not.
Edit : link is removed

Any ideas, man?
Could it be because of the custom recovery TWRP that is installed on the phone?
Check whether you run this on fastboot mode not hboot mode, is the word fastboot usb shown on bootloader before you run the script ?

It looks ok, not sure why you get error when running the script.
A long way...
Go to recovery, then backup - swipe to backup
After complete, go to mount - mount usb storage - copy the twrp backup to pc.
Open the backup folder, open the system backup with 7-zip, extract the build.prop and post it here
Gotta go now, will check your progress in 2 hours

I'm sorry that this is getting so annoying. I hope you aren't annoyed.
I went to back up the files, and when I tried to mount USB storage, it told me that the drivers failed to install. I proceeded to back up to the sd card, take the sd card out and put it in my PC. So therefore I could not, at least I don't think, copy the TWRP backup to the PC, unless it's on the SD card somewhere.
You say to open the backup folder and then the system backup? I need you to please tell me the exact directory because I do not know where to look.

I do not know what the system backup file is. Is it the nandroid backup? Because I tried to open the nandroid backup with 7-zip and it said that it could not open it as an archive.

The backup is : (mine as example)
On sdcard, F:\TWRP\BACKUPS\SH25FTV03605\mySENSE3
You will see a file named system.ext4.win; open this file with 7-zip, it will give one folder named system or whatever, open that folder then you will build.prop

Meantime, if you can get build.prop, it will be better as the build.prop will tell the software version no.

Alright man I'm downloading it now. Do you think you could tell me why the phone chose to get screwed up? I guess my question is how does having an unlocked bootloader + TWRP + not rooting + update = messed up phone?
Because to update an OTA, you need a stock recovery, not TWRP.
It is ok when the bootloader unlocked but must have stock recovery.
But to run RUU, you need the bootloader relocked, no need stock recovery as the RUU will replace that.
You can read more on how to do OTA update here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705484

You're on a custom ROM mate!
Sent from my One X
You just got this phone, so presumably you have not unlocked the bootloader, or obtained root access, right? It could be that your provider just hasn't gotten around to getting the update to it's users yet (as is the case currently for some providers in NZ, but not all). Your android version is the lastest iteration of Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) just before Jelly Bean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history#Android_4.0.3-4.0.4_Ice_Cream_Sandwich_.28API_level_15.29
Didn't even notice the custom ROM, DOH!
Titanium backup your apps and data, save onto PC, flash back to stock ROM, flash back to stock recovery, update software, flash custom recovery, create nandroid backup of new stock setup, check for custom ROM that supports the new JB and flash it (if you screw this up you'll appreciate the nandroid backup), see if you can use your Titanium backup to restore your apps and data.
Do these fastboot commands
Fastboot oem readcid
Fastboot getvar version-main
Lets see what we can do !

If you follow us the chance of breaking things are very . . very small
Oke install the HTC drivers
http://db.tt/gXVxa3Dp
Download these fastboot files
http://db.tt/ldx3qOOU
Put the fastboot files in a folder like this
C;\fastboot\fastboot files from my link
Now hold the power button and the volume - button together untill it restarts into the bootloader. Don't let go of the two buttons untill you are in it !
Connect the phone to the pc and check if you see on the phone
FASTBOOT USB
then open a command prompt inside the fastboot folder on the pc (right click in the folder and open command prompt here)
Type this
Fastboot devices
If your serial pops up its good and then you also do the 2 other commands i gave you a post earlier
Edit: the chance of damage is so small because there is no s-off for our devices. Practically the only way to brick the device is if you flash stuff that is not ment for out HTC one x !
yes i performed all 3 commands but first tell me how to reopen my cell from fastboot usb
You can type
Fastboot reboot
Or unplug the cable and navigate with the volume buttons to REBOOT .... maybe you have to press HBOOT once to see the REBOOT option on screen
Confirm with the power button the action you choose
What was the outcome of the commands
ok what i get
fastboot devices

Keep the phone in fastboot usb mode with the locked bootloader and right click the RUU.exe file on the pc and select
Run with administrator permissions (or a similar option)
It will flash your phone to completely stock ICS android. Then you can manually check for the JB update and install that too !
Note : it will wipe the entire phone. Do backup things if you need it !!!!

Appreciate for any advice on how can i update my HTC One X device
Thanks
You can use this !
http://androidfiles.org/ruu/securek...Radio_1.1204.103.14_release_257076_signed.exe
It will bring you back to full stock, after that you can update up to JB.
do i need to use a tool to run the setup in my HTC One X?
sorry for the dumb question but this is my very first time in handling Andriod OS
thanks
You can set your phone with pc or your hands...
The RUU is your tool. You hold down the power + volume down button together as long as it takes for you to see the bootloader
On top of the bootloader will say
Unlocked
Locked
Relocked
One of these 3 !
To run the ruu the bootloader must either be LOCKED or RELOCKED !
To lock the bootloader you need this fastboot command
Fastboot oem lock
After that you execute the ruu.exe from the pc and follow instructions. Charge the battery to full power before you start !!!
i tried running the ruu.exe on my laptop but i received an error saying that complete first the current setup before proceeding or contact your administrator
Oke try this
Right click mousebutton on the ruu.exe and select
Run as administrator
And/or reboot the pc once
there was an error on opening in the usb master when the phone opened on the Hboot.
any idea on how can i fix this?
That's normal....we all have that. Its because of the usb cable being plugged in !
But don't press on HBOOT or anything else. Just put it on the first page of the bootloader and run the ruu as above
no luck...im still having the same error while executing the ruu.exe
anything elso i can do?
Hmm well afaik its a computer problem (no administrator rights of some kind) maybe transfer the ruu to another pc and try it again ?
ok will look for another laptop but this is the second laptop that i used but the same error occuers on both
user id used is already the administrator..
how i wish there is still other ways i can update my htc one x
Yes it could be done with a stock nandroid backup but if you don't have that. The problem is your low hboot. I don't think there is one that low available for you.
Can you give these commands another go for me
Fastboot oem readcid
Fastboot getvar version-main
Or a direct hboot flash but i need your exact CID for that ! But then you are still dependant on a custom rom.....
equal dianapa
sir, where should i run the command you just requested?
In steps
1 Download android sdk and unpack the bundle
2 uninstall HTC syncmanager if you have it installed but leave the drivers
3 put the phone in the bootloader
4 navigate in the android sdk folder to the platform tools folder. Hold down shift and click the right mouse button and select "open command window here"
5 type in that window
Fastboot getvar version main
and
Fastboot oem readcid
version is 0.5a
CID = HTC_044
That's not the main version number....try again, it looks like this
1.28.401.** or 2.17.415.**. These are examples !
i cannot run the fastboot getvar version main in the command window
only fastboot getvar version is the being executed which gives me the value of 0.5a

You have a very old h-boot so you need to upgrade it first!!
So you need to flash the stock rom for your hboot or the ruu of your hboot and then when the hboot is 1.36 or 1.39 are the two best, you can flash a rom without problems!!
You dont have to unlock bootloader because is unlocked!

4: flash a new custom rom (better then stock)
5: no
6: you install a new rom by
Flashing the boot.img with fastboot commands, make a FULL wipe in recovery and install a new rom.
The easiest way to get you upgraded is to get you to full stock and update via official HTC ota
Can you perform a fastboot command :
Fastboot getvar version-main
Please post the number

Oke here we go !
Download this file
http://bugsylawson.com/index.php/fi...11-radio-1120410514-release-260743-signedexe/
Backup everything from the phone you need, even a backup of the sdcard ! Because this will wipe all
1: charge the battery if its at low level
2: put the phone in the bootloader and relock the bootloader
Fastboot oem lock
3: keep the phone in the bootloader/fastboot usb mode
4: select the ruu with a right mouse button click and select
"Run as administrator"
5: sit back and follow the installer
This will bring back the phone to full stock, after this you go into the settings menu - about - software updstes.....you update as much as you can until it doesn't detect any updates anymore !!!

[Q] Htc one x stuck at carrier boot logo after flashing zip file

Ok so got the htc one x off Craigslist. One click Rooted it. So I wanted to change the boot up logo to tmobile. So I flashed a zip file called "flash boot" then it restarted to the GCI logo and sits there..... I tried going to hboot and it says sd failed. Ummm I did factory restore and erase cache and erase . I'm now looking into the whole RUU thing but I can't find any LInkS to a RUU file.
Here's what it says in recover screen
***unlocked***
Endeavors pvt ship s-on rl

In fastboot under hboot when connected to computer it says:
Failed to open USB master mode
Please plug USB off.
So I'm not able to connect to the computer to load files
Update: my computer recognize my phone as a cd drive(d
Then I get the windows is installing drives message in the bottom right and says failed. "htc mtp device failed"

Do you think I will be able to use commands even if it boot up to just my carriers logo? I can get into recovery but the problem is when you go into fastboot and hboot while connected to the computer it says failed to load USB master. But my device still shows up on my notebook as a cd-rom drive (d
Commands are done with the phone in the bootloader. The usb master fail error is only because you enter the bootloader with the usb cable plugged in !

The one with 401 thats your phones region. If 2.17.401 wont work try 3.14.401
3.14 won't work instantly, you have to be on 2.17.401 before the 3.14 works
And there is no Asia 2.17.401....... 401 is Europe only ! Asia is 707, read carefully ......

Omg this was a big waste of time I fresking left the phone on my carriers screen thought it was charging. I woke up this morning the phone was off. Now I'm getting the battery is low message. Smh
I can't go into recovery it sends me back to the fastboot menu I can only select recovery then it sends me back to fastboot/hboot.
Then when i let the phone boot to my carriers screen I get the installing drivers message. Then it says failed - htc mtp device
Oke put the phone in fastboot mode and run this script with admin rights on the pc from the fastboot folder

It will continuously reboot the bootloader and charge the phone bit by bit. Leave til it reaches round 3800 mV .....then enter the recovery and charge it more in there
What recovery do you have exactly ?

Ummm I think it's stock recovery. When I had access to clockworkmod it just goes into a black screen. I'm saying stock recovery because when I went to the android store and downloaded clockworkmod it couldn't my device for clockworkmod. So I believe it's just stock recovery
