This is a Nexus. You have open bootloaders and can boot what you like.
If you sit down and bother to learn your tools (fastboot, adb, etc) you have root by default without needing anyone to package it for you.
This is what it shows in the CWM window

You'll need to use fastboot to flash a recovery.
Please refer to the Jellybean Information for more information on how you can do that.

is easy copy the Framework-res.apk of the custom ROM in your sd.
then you get access root ROM 431.
with root explorer copy framework-res.apk file in the system folder and change the permissions, then move that file to the folder framework
Maybe this can help you

I only have .zip files of custom roms, to flash it doesn't it have to be a .tar file?
-edit-
I'm a noob at flashing, the only "type" of flashing i know is to load GIO_v1.0 at OPS and loading the .tar file (related to stock vodafone rom) at the One Package Option. If I do that it stucks to stock rom only as you know.
Sometimes after wipe phone stops on android logo i dont no why, other idea is you didnt format system to ext4 before flashing.
try to reinstall and don't forget to wipe data/chace

Apk fully functional in JB and KK versions.
Functional in Odex roms and Deodex
Put this on /system/app/ (JB) or /system/priv-app/ (KK) and change permissions to rw-r--r-- (644)
Ps. Rename apks Odex Mms.apk.bak and Mms.odex.bak of system
Working on 4.4.2
working on 4.3. Tested by me.
Download:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/bdjizxha15hxl20/Mms.rar
Any chance of a better explanation on how to install? there is only one apk in the zip so do u rename the odex file that's in the phone already and copy the apk you provided over the stock apk and rename that too?
Nice idea!the root is required?

I followed the directions and restarted. It shows as a program, but the default settings don't show it as a default mms option and when I tried to use it to send a message it force closed.
