Some things like apps work best with ics than gingerbread. There are plenty of changes from gb to honeycomb to ics.

Not imo, sure it needs to be tweaked a little but no matter how fast GB is it's got an ugly U.I and I wouldn't dream of going back to it.
Just googled some stock gb benchmarks and average score was 4600/5000 on stock ics I've got about 5200 on CM10 JB 6200 and even more on "clean" just flashed ROM so stop talking bull**** and go play with yourself because nobody likes you in this thread.

Forget Benchmarks. Be Honest Mann
We need more free ram, like as 230 200
we dont need high benchmark. We need stable - fast - lighting - Power !
If you want free ram then remove bloatware, i had 250 MB on tweaked, de-bloated ICS.
And learn about Android/Linux ram management. Used ram doesn't mean wasted ram, if they stay in ram they will start faster.

Are you high? Because you sound so. Right now i have 180mb of free ram on cm10 super smooth ui and nice performance in games. I would never go back to gb because its ancient and I think it kills android as an platform. Why? Because majority of current android devices runs on gb so developers cant fully use power of newer API's and they must keep backwards compatibility which I think is always some additional work and unnecessary code.
I think exactly the same. Gb is better than ICS in all ways.
Appearance? Yes, we have great themers, we could make the interface we wanted, with no doubt.
That apps run better in ICS than in GB? That is not true. Due to RAM consumption and other aspects, apps work really better in android 2.3 than in 4.x+ (for our phone).
We moved to ICS because its build number is 4.0, not because anything is better. The true reality is that ICS is a less stable than GB...
There are new API features and some apps will never work in GB.
ics looks better than gb, and I don't play games to notice much difference in performance

Not in my opinion. With every gb battery would last at least 20h with moderate use. That doesnt happen in ICS
Enviado desde mi LT18i usando Tapatalk 2
In all honesty, I used to think exactly the same as you.
But, as stated earlier, ICS IS nearly as fast as GB now.
I used GB exclusively and occasionally used an ICS ROM just to see what they were like, I always went back.
But recently there has been some excellent work and I would never go back to GB now.
In the end its just personal preference, if you like GB - use a GB rom!!! There are plenty of good ones!

I totally agree that Froyo was the worst, it's so slow and ugly :silly: Gingerbread was a huge improvement and Ice Cream Sandwich is an even bigger improvement, but at the moment not all the power of it can be harnessed by our DEFY, so I'd say that Gingerbread is the best. But Motorola is to blame for that, cause with those proper custom kernels, ICS would be flying So, if no way for custom kernels to run arises, I'm guessing that troubles with missing libraries will be even bigger with Jelly Bean, so we might just not even see a CM based on JB for DEFY
Found the Jellybean wallpapers and the new bootanimation over at Android authority!
>>>>>Android Jelly Bean Goodies<<<<<
Has anyone tried the new Jelly Bean VoiceSearch/GoogleQuickSearchBox on our ICS builds yet? I've been searching all over, no-one has yet to post it. You guys had any luck?
I've just tried Jelly Bean on Galaxy Nexus, it's way more faster than ICS because it has this Project Butter (newer hwa) which makes UI constant on 60FPS, so no more UI lags!
Jelly Bean is based on ICS so there won't be so much trouble about porting it because we already have ICS
I think the main question would be whether Project Butter will run with our Froyo/GB Kernel we have to stick with?!

it will awesome for all of us , if it happened some how , our developers are best of all others ,
we were just given eclair , we had froyo(modded roms) , GB roms ( best and great performance ) , and we had ICS all good , except some issues due to locked bootloaders, otherwise we at this time could had best ICS rom Available ....... developers are trying their best working day & night for us ,
I am sure that we all will have jelly bean ,( not fully functional though ), but our great developers will make it happen for us all .......
once this Bootloader thing gets solved some how , can't say how ,
we gonna have rocking roms with overall best performance than all the device present in this xda forum ...... and i can bet on this ......
atlast thanks to all the developers of DEFY & DEFY PLUS .......

what da hell samsung? uour phone spec isn't low enough for ICS, your bull**** touchwiz blows everything down. crappy marketing strategies
Even Samsung Galaxy S Duos http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_duos_s7562-4883.php comes with ICS
Speechless as it is much weaker than our SGW, in term of CPU & GPU, the only thing it wins is the amount of RAM
There are a lot of ICS phones with 512MB RAM from HTC & Sony, if Samsung is willing to give us support, we would get ICS without problem for sure since Samsung got a big team to work it out, really quite a bad support from Samsung for our phone, luckily we got Arco and some developers who work hard to bring ICS to us really thankful to them!

yes this is right. support al the dev!!
I always look at the bright side of this.
If sammy release update ICS or JB, then we will loose the excitement of custom ROM.
What I mean is like the waiting time of new custom ROM version, the moment when devs release new update and we download it and flash it to our beloved SGW. It's so exciting!!!
Here, we have many custom ROMs and every new release is getting better and better. To be honest, I might prefer custom ROM. Because even if sammy release update, I'm sure it will full with sammy's bloatware.
One day, I met other SGW user. He is just a regular user and don't know anything about flashing. He looked at my phone and say: whoaa..!!! how did you do that?? Can you do it to my phone??
My point is: I DON'T CARE if sammy release update or not. As long as there are custom ROMs, that's more than enough for me
maybe we are not worried about this because there are custom rom. but I feel sorry for those who use stock rom and hope about rom upgrade.

Yes but surely ROMs like Cyanogen 9 would be much further along and have taken less time to develop and debug if an official Sammy ICS ROM for Galaxy W had been available as a starting point for modding/improving.

Developers would be able to customized ICS if a stock ICS is already available than creating from scratch. ICS is different from GB. Thats why devs are having difficulties in fixing stuffs like camera for phones that do not have ICS. Devs would love to use working libs for ICS phone-related components. Then porting JB would be much faster too since little is different from ICS.

Hello everybody.
I've rooted and modded the Samsung Galaxy W of my girlfriend but now i'm facing a lot of strange battery issues: the battery drains really fast and she hates it.
I've tried CM9 RC6 and SlimBean but the problem is still here. I've got no time to waste on trying 20 ROMs so i'm asking you a suggestion.
She was really excited about the stock ROM. It was fair enough for her, apart from the bloatware that couldn't be uninstalled and some random reboots and freeze.
So, i'm searching for something like that:
Great battery life
Stable and reliable ROM
Possibly CM based or AOSP
In my opinion, a CyanogenMod 7 would be great, but i can't find it for the SGW.
Could you please help me?
Thank you!

My honest advice:
Do not consider anything except Stock ROM with Value Pack or CM9.
Its not that those other coders are not talented. But - it's like with those small, heavily tuned / modified Honda Civics driving around: Their owner / creators and other enthusiasts love them for their custom mods, but you really could/would not give such a car to your girldfirend, mother, or whatever.
sooner or later you run into problems that will never be fixed, nothing for daily usage by a non-IT-person.
With beta 6, i guess you mean RC6?
Battery lasting, the missing fm radio and a sometimes not-100%-stable camera would be the only drawbacks i see for it.
Performance and overall fluidity is at least one class over the stock rom, really remarkable.
Maybe there will be better battery performancee with CM9 in the future, as it is not really clear atm, what causes the impacts.
But i think its unlikely that it will ever reach the Stock ROM under this aspect, as the new features are simply likely to consumer more cpu cycles then before.

CM9 RC6 was actually my first choice, because a friend of mine is using it without any problem. Anyway, i've experienced the huge battery drain even with CM9 RC6.
I can give a try to CM9 RC7 but i'm wondering: wouldn't it be better to choose a ROM with the 2.x kernel?

Yes, i meant RC6, sorry.
Sadly, battery performance is crucial for my girlfriend. Anyway, i just want a "normal" battery drain; what i'm experiencing is a very massive battery drain, totally abnormal.
Would you suggest me a Stock ROM with Value Pack? Maybe it's the better choice...

if im not mistaken its aosp by outerheaven..:fingers-crossed:
Understood, thanks
AOSP by outerheaven was one in the list of the ones i wanted to try...
Would you suggest me a Stock ROM with Value Pack? Maybe it's the better choice...

You mean these ones?
Black Notes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483072
RebelROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673875
Bagux Project Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687854
They're pretty old and discontinued but they could be enough for my girlfriend. I'll check them better later.
Thanks!

beside the aosp & cm9..try queen anne's revenge or biohazard..

Queen Anne's Revenge: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2161091
BioHazard RoM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927428
They're just customized CyanogenMod, and i've already have problems with CyanogenMod. If i would try CM another time, i would stick to CM9 Unofficial
Even if Queen Anne's Revenge is aimed to best battery life and it's made by an italian (as me ). It's interesting...
I think i'm gonna flash one of those modified stocks! Wish me luck!
At the end of all my tests, i've decided to keep using F.A.W. (Rls 3, from the same branch of Rls 2): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626827
It's simply a powered Samsung stock but it's rocking stable, really fast, enough good looking and with a huge battery life!
Perfect for my girlfriend!
I've been wondering. I've tested at least 30 xperia roms. From GB to ICS to Jellybean. And while the developers on this site have done a excellent, the majority of the custom roms, in my experience start to lag after a few weeks. Yes I know apps like Facebook will cause that but somehow I've only experienced none/little lag with the stock rom. So I can't help but wonder, in the long run are the Stock Roms provided by Sony the best? When it comes to the stability factor.
Yes ofcourse, thats how sony made it and they know best for our device.

try this..JB ROM even not yet tested.. no LAG and all the latest options.. way better than a GB.

and yes.. SONY made the software.. sony made the hardware.. they made it.. its their brain child.. they know best.. but Devs also have an almost identical twin Performance Roms.. lolz

Sorry to say man but none of JB ROMs can be stable. Even yours. You can only achieve smooth UI and partly smooth gaming (not in heavy games of course) but performance will never be same as GB. And the big pain in the ass is random rebooting when big workload. You're right that JB have better options but that's all.

I agree. A Question can kernels mess up the stability of a stock rom? Cause I've flashed a stock rom on a Lupus kernel mainly for overclocking and I think the stock kernel works better...
Is there a stock kernel available but only with overclocking added on it?

I dunno but LUPUS has no problems with stability. In what aspect stock kernel is better?
You can try DoomKernel. It's probably closer to stock than LUPUS and has overclocking ability of course.
Within two days since the release of CM10.1 with hybrid ION/PMEM allocation, I happen to see more and more people asking for the explanation of that ION thing we are all talking about.
In fact, all you need to do is a Google search because lately there's been quite a bit of discussions about Android "ION". What exactly is ION? Is it just some fancy name or is there more to it?
Let's talk about some history of Android first.
Since the very beginning, vendors of Android devices like HTC, Samsung or Motorola all use different System on a Chip (SoC) solutions from Qualcomm (MSM/Snapdragon), Nvidia (Tegra) and TI (OMAP). Each SoC has its own kernel drivers for managing memory buffers (chunks of scratchpad memory) used by Graphic Processing Unit (GPU), Audio processing, and Camera Stills and Video processing.
Every vendor had their own version of memory management, such as PMEM for Qualcomm, NVMAP for Nvidia and CMEM for TI - private memory not shared with anyone else. Each Android graphics, audio and camera libraries had to be customized to work with each of the SoC's own flavour of memory management, which makes it a nightmare for the Android Maintainers to maintain the fragmentation and compatibility issues abound. However, this was the case for all pre-Ice Cream Sandwich OS like Froyo, Gingerbread or even Honeycomb.
For Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich), Google was finally fed up with the private memory manager structure and decreed that all newer devices with Android 4.0 native should use the new, so called "ION" memory manager.
So what is exactly the Android ION?
In a simple words, Android ION removes ARM specific dependencies. The ION memory manager provides a common structure for how memory will be managed and used by GPU, Audio and Camera drivers.
Common functions are:
- Memory allocation / de-allocation
- Direct Memory Access Pools
user-space (Android libraries)
- memory passing to/from kernel space
With these common functions and structures defined, kernel drivers from each SoC manufacturer needed to rewrite their drivers to be compatible with Ice Cream Sandwich.
Once the drivers adopted to the new common structure, the graphics, audio and camera libraries can now be more generic and could care less about the nitty-gritty details of how different SoC vendors' drivers worked.
It was painful at first, but it was a necessary move for Google to impose to all the SoC vendors.
Now looking back, this new ION manager enabled manufactures and third party Android projects (like Cyanogen-mod) to quickly bring up newer Android releases for various devices and also reduce the "hidden" Android fragmentation.
Thanks Google for a powerful Search Tool and the author of this:

I'm not a dev, but in my understanding the biggest hurdle for porting ROMS is device drivers. It is relatively easy to port a ROM from the AriesVe to the Ancora, because they are made by the same manufacturer, have the same system-on-a-chip manufacturer (Qualcomm) and have a similar stock kernel based.
But porting a ROM from, let's say a HTC One is highly impossible, because it uses a different system-on-a-chip exclusive to HTC phones and its stock kernel is based on it. And even though Android is based on Linux, each of the phone manufacturers have slightly different ways of organizing system files that set the various system options. So a kernel patch that works on one device probably won't work on another. (kernel level features such as GPU overclocking, two-way call recording etc. rely on these system setting files).
Even among phones made by the same company, you may have hardware differences such as different camera technologies, different screen resolutions, etc. that make porting harder.
That's why CyanogenMod, AOKP and MIUI are so valuable and appreciated, because they organize porting of a ROM that, as far as the kernel and GUI are concerned, vary little between devices. However those projects still have to rely on what manufacturers choose to release as open source to develop hardware device drivers to port the ROM to each device.
And then you have the problem of, what level of Android is officially supported by the manufacturer? Our Galaxy W, for example, is still waiting for an official ICS release it may never get, which means running JB/KK as it is meant to be run is that much harder. It's hard enough , where we doesnt have official ICS/JB/KK kernel source.
That's why I give lots of kudos to people who take custom ROMs like Aokp,CM(Mega Kudos to Arco) Paranoid Android and the like that were developed for other devices and port them to the Ancora. We're talking crazy wizard-level stuff like memory management, camera, hardware graphics optimization (Project Butter).

The main advantage for us is the possibility to update Adreno drivers, get rid of some bugs and feel smooth with some sort of better performance.

Surely ION management is better. If it wasn't, it would have already been left out since ICS times by all the manufacturers.

agree with you.. last time i use CM10.1 that still PMEM, i gave up to stay with it because it is really poor performance when the phone stay up longer... now with ION i feel happy when using this CM10.1 with ION.. well since ICS until KITKAT all should use ION to fully optimize the memory management itself.. if someone could build ION for ICS.. haha.. that would be awesome...

Surely not. It has nothing to do about our battery life. We all have different usage statistics and the variety of apps installed. So we all have different battery stats too. For me one with a heavy usage is more than enough. And two days as a calling and messaging device - is brilliant.
But no... ION has no influence on battery life...
thanks for the topic... best explanation i've read
