Battery issues since update - Galaxy Ace II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've noticed that since the most recent ota update (xxll2) my phone discharges super fast. For example my phone has been on charge from the mains for about 6 hours, it has been unplugged for half an hour and is already at 50 percent.
I've never had this problem before, rebooted phone multiple times since I updated it. The only other thing I can think of is to flash an older version
What do you think?

Same problem here. I went back to I8160XXLK6 soon after I discovered battery drain.

Just today my phone got this ota update. Lets see whether I face this same issue or not.

Ok. Lets see whether i face this batery drain issue or not... So far it is working fine, but still too early to say.
Sent from my GT-I8160 using xda app-developers app

I think the battery is fine for me. No battery issue at all.

well i rebooted it earlier and whilst out working my phone which gets used as a sat nav has been on charge, it hasnt discharged as bad as it did this morning, its been off of charge for about 2 hours and its only 95% i did pull the battery after it had updated so maybe its just getting used to it. i will see if it gets any worse and ill flash the previous update... or just wait for samsung to release the jb update :fingers-crossed:

I have the XXLL2 too, and I don't have any battery issue.

My phone was updated to the latest firmware yesterday, and even I've not faced any battery issue with the latest update (XXLL2)

Im using xxk6 and i have the battery.issue..I'll try to update later...Im not sure if my theme was the one that effected the battery or the firmware...

Have you ever let the phone shutdown because of an empty battery and the recharged it to 100%?
That should maybe help, because that should wipe the battery cache.

Don't you know that draining Li-Ion battery till zero damages it.You should never let battery drain till device shuts down.Do it three or for times and your battery will have like a half capacity.
You can clear battery stats with many google play apps or by CWM.There is an option for it.

Btw, this battery calibration thing or the "let battery go dead zero and then charge to 100" are not working. Battery Calibration is just a myth (a busted one), And according to Google Engineer Dianne Hackborn the batterystats file has no impact on the current battery level shown to you wether you wipe it or not.

I also have this issue... Since XLL2 update, battery is drained more when phone is on sleep than with previous firmware. But I'm waiting for jelly bean.

Hi,
I have been having a problem of battery.
1. Battery dies from being 100% overnight.
2. Phone randomly shuts itself having more than 40% battery but shows 0 battery when it restarts.
3. Phone restarts quite frequently when taking a picture. (once a week)
Please let me know what should I do to solve the problem. Thanks in advance.

Could you install BetterBatteryStats from XDA? It's free for XDA members Install it, charge your phone back up, and let this issue happen again. Take a screenshot of Kernel Wakelock and Partial Wakelocks, as well as Process. Would get a much better view of what's eating your battery for breakfast.

I've got the same drain problem as your number 1, but not the other 2 issues. The funny thing is it only started a week or so ago, before that it was fine. I've been running the Viper rom, and Faux kernel without a hitch for over a month up until now.
I used to get a day out of the battery, and 2.5-3 hour screen on which was fine IMO, but not anymore.
I'm wondering if a recent app update has caused the issue, just speculating though, also it seems to be that the drain is happening when I'm not using the phone, when I do use the handset for whatever it uses the battery as normal.
Not trying to hijack your thread, just thought I'd give my two pennies worth as I'm having a similar problem.

You seem to have a lot of applications running and something is keeping your phone awake. Any awake time when the screen isn't on also is an application using your phone.
Go to the play store and check the permissions of your downloaded apps, any app that has the permission to keep your device awake is a candidate for your problem. Uninstall them all and your problem should be gone, re-install one by one and see when it returns.
Regards
Phil

Need a shot of the 'partial wakelocks' category.
Also, don't stick them altogether into one pic, the board shrinks it massively. Just upload them individually

Looks like it's the radio causing the majority of your drain. How is the signal in your location? I see you've switched from EDGE to 3G during the screenshots... if the 3G signal isn't great then it will cause battery drain searching. It might be worth forcing your phone to either 2G or 3G only and seeing what happens.

Actually I just switched to 3g in the last couple of days. I only had 2G previously and the problem still occurred. Its funny that it happens only at night.
I think its the time for a fresh start. Format your phone and start all over.
So, how much will it takes you? Less than 3 hours? I'd say go for it.
At lest it would give you less headache and hopefully more battery.
Good Luck
I've had this problem before too, with baseband and alarm wakelocks.

CELL STANDBY battery drain solution on stock

After being frustrated for a couple of weeks and wanting to return my s3 due to overnight cell standby batty drain of around 40-50% (from full charge with no use overnight, I finally called Samsung tech support and they told me to power down, take out the battery and reinsert, and use the original charger ONLY (i was using a old clamshell phone's charger that I found lying around rather than the one that came with the phone. I freakin can't believe it but it solved the issue for me!!! I only lost about 4 percent overnight. I was soooo pissed before, but now I love my s3 again )
Curious to hear if this works for others who have also been frustrated with this awesome device...
That's been a known problem since the beginning and there was a fix zip floating around, flashed it and my cell standby is only ever 1-2% max 6%
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium
Well just restarting my phone works to "fix" the massive battery drain issue (presumably because cell standby is using about 60% of my battery) but it will be back in a few days. While I do sometimes use more than one battery charger,I don't think this is related to using something other than the original charger but that is something I can test. Thanks for that tip.
This is one of the 3 big problems I have with this phone (the others being random loss of service presumably due to LTE network deficiencies and the face proximity sensor acting to disable the screen whenever I try to touch the screen with my finger). Since mine is a replacement phone for another S3 with the exact same issues, I'm assuming there is no real fix for these problems (for a stock phone). Yes, I have learned to hate my phone...

The Cell Standby Fix posted above me...which I use as well...does not fix a DRAIN...it fixes a false reporting of the drain. Charger has nothing to do with it. That was a fluke or a misrepresentation.
i turned off the voip services that i had running and now it discharges only about 15-20% over night
Do a search for gsiff_daemon. That is most likely the cause of your problem and while I can't say for sure, I suspect the charger advice worked coincidentally due to the problem being fixed temporarily by powering down and restarting.
Sadly, I don't know of Samsung admitting to this issue and it looks like even the jelly bean update does not fix it.
I get the cell standby misreporting, not adversely affecting life at all. I did flash the fix and the cell standby consumption is now reported much lower, but I seem to be getting a slightly higher battery drain. sitting idle I generally drop around 2% per hour due to syncing and email push. after flashing the fix I'm up to about 5% per hour. I backed up right before this install so I'll probably revert back...
any idea why this would be?

I highly doubt using the Cell Standby reporting fix is causing the 5% drain Russ77. It's a proven fix without reported side effects. I have looked at the code myself. It simply alters a certain math value of 34 to 3.4.....a coding typo! Once again, probably just coincidental timing. But read on....you may have this bug if you run a stock rom...
Here is a full test report on the gsiff_daemon that I performed yesterday with details on how to reproduce it, and how to work around it. Hopefully some smart cookie will look into it and fix the code from the inside!

Check out the thread linked to by themadproducer (I post up) for more details. But basically, yes, if you have root you can rename the file. I just did this a couple of days ago. I haven't noticed any issues. Maybe GPS lock takes a few seconds longer, but it's hard to say if that's true or just a coincidence.
It does seem the gsiff_daemon issue is triggered by a hot reboot, which sometimes happens spontaneously. I haven't had one since I rename the file, but I don't know if renaming that also affects the spontaneous hot reboots, which are annoying in themselves. But at least it won't cause the phone to eat through battery and turn itself into a mini hotplate...
Cell standby is the one which is concerned with network connections.
The solution that would work can be changing the SIM card. Get a new SIM from your operator and throw away the old one.

[Q] Help if you can, thanks

I've had my I747 at&t now for 6 months, about 2 weeks ago It started shutting down on me on it's own, at that time I was rooted and had a custom rom installed that was working perfect. It was the HighOnAndroid ROM v0.3 from galaxys3root.com. There were no problems at all until 2 weeks ago too. So I used Kies to factory restore and upgrade to1747UCDLK3 to see if it was my rom I I had installed. My phone works now, but I have a problem with the battery I can't figure out.
here's what it does, I charge my battery at the end of the day to 100% and turn it off, then the next morning it's always down to around 70% even though it is off all night. It didn't do this before at all, have you had this issue or can give me some advice? thank you
Edit...FYI I use this phone on Straight Talk and have reformatted my 32 gig sd too just to start clean.

No, I liked it rooted....just trying to figure out what happened. I just don't understand how the battery can drain that much if the phone is off. I may reroot of I can get past this part, It's seems to run down no matter which rom is on it.

Powered off or sleeping?
If you physically turn the phone off (not just sleep mode), then something is up with the battery.
Try powering to 100% charge, then discharge all the way down to 5%. Then charge to 100% again and see if that helps.
My phone was only ever able to charge to 70% for a few days. A complete discharge was able to fix it for me.

Galaxy s3 massive battery drain (replaced battery)

Hello,
I know there are countless threads about the battery issues, but im having a hard time trying to find a solution for my problem.
My battery drain insanely fast, even on idle. I can barley get 5-6 hours on my battery. Standard usage, some Internet, texting etc. I have all the pre installed apps disabled, and have most apps I downloaded on manual sync.
A friend of mine had the same issue and replaced the battery and the phone is back to normal. I replaced the battery and still have the same issue.
It takes a long time to charge, sometimes I leave charging while the phone is off, and come back am hour later and it barley charged 3%.
Please I need some help, any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks in advanced.

How long have you had the phone and when did this start happening? Are you stock? If you're running a custom rom, when did you flash it (or any updates)?
I've had it since early September.
Same rom, using 4.1.1. Never been rooted.

It sounds to me that software-wise your phone's battery should be working correctly, especially if you've disabled so many apps and never rooted. I think it's a defective battery. If you don't want to spend too much, you can buy 3rd party replacement batteries, but they probably won't have NFC.
I've already replaced the battery. I got the same battery my friend got when her s3 was having the same problem... Now her phone is fine and mines still isn't.

Ok. That's not good. Assuming you've tried factory resetting the phone and it still didn't do anything, I say go back to carrier store and get a replacement phone. Something obviously isn't right. Phone hasn't been out a year yet so it'll fall under manufacturer warranty. I had to get mine replaced a month ago for another issue.

Crazy battery life loss?

This morning I unplugged my phone and battery percentage was at 100% but about 30 minutes later it dropped all the way down to 71%.. I close my recent apps constantly. The battery was normal the rest of the day (drained pretty quickly but not as quick as the morning). Any reason why this happens? This is the first time it happened. I usually get about 12 hours on a full charge.

perhaps a rogue app. i would do a battery pull and fire it back up. see if it happens again. a thousand people are going to tell you to go get better batter stats. you said this has never happened before so i'd say see if this works. if not, i'd try recalling the most recent app you've downloaded
