[Q] How to get faster data speeds - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi, i was wondering how i might get faster data speeds. i currently have an gs2 epic 4g touch on sprint. i rooted my phone flashed a new prl and used roam control and still cant get better than half a meg download rate.

Try flashing different modems. Some modems perform better than others depending on your area.

sprint rep stated to me that it's a nationwide outage effecting 3g & 4g and it should be fixed by today.

I would have laughed at that Sprint rep. 3g data has been a joke for along time now on Sprint. 4g it's decent but not even close to other carriers. Only good thing about Sprint is the truly unlimited data because it's so Damn slow

If you know your MSL number
open phone dialer
dial ##data#
edit
enter MSL number
go to other
multimedia
set the proxy numbers to
0.0.0.0
0
0.0.0.0
0
exit out and reboot your phone.
It bypasses the sprint proxy server. One less data hop.

I have a friend of a friend (yeah, I know) who works for Sprint/Nextel. Supposedly, they are knocking down 3G towers and not telling any of their customers.

Another issue that you may or may not be having is 4G downloads on custom kernels. If your 4G download speeds are very slow you may need to use a repack or stock kernel.

This is not true at all. Sprint is disbanding their iden network, beyond that, their towers operate at different frequencies so they carry 3g and 4g on the same tower. What your friend might have been referring to is the practice of re-directing towers when coverage is opened in a new area, which can affect existing service slightly, and typically customers aren't informed.

AOSP/CM type ROMs do not support dialer codes.

You could install a port forwarder and a proxy server and forward port 8085 to 127.0.0.1.
Just an idea.

[Q] PRL 1115 and still getting 1x speeds

For some reason when I load the 1115 PRL I only get 3g speeds for about 1/2 an hour, then it goes back to 1x. I have tried reloading a couple of different times and still the same thing. I use roam control to switch over to Verizon and that works just dandy, but no 3g speeds. Its the weirdest thing, anyone else have the same issues?
i have same exact problem i am on 1x all the time after 11115 prl
will wait for answer otherwise going to take it back to sprint let them fix it..
Maybe the area ur in doesn't have 3g on vz? I know there's one area I go to that there's barely a vz signal with 1x

Also there is an app in the market called netmonitor it will tell you what if you are roaming.
If the "carrier " says sprint , your not roaming.
It also says the network type you are on.

Man what the hell I'm totally jelous...
Try out roam control. It's been mentioned in these forums before and it works great. Unfortunately it's not on the market anymore but you can buy it directly from the developers website. I use it at work where I get hardly any sprint service and it roams on 3G perfectly. It also helps out my battery because the phone isn't constantly trying to switch from roaming to local. I think the site is roamctrl.com.
I use Roam Control in Atlanta and it works great and I do indeed receive Verizon 3G on my phone. But Roam Control can't magically give you 3G if it's just not available on PRL 11115 in your area. I would try a different PRL but please be wary of roaming all the time. Sprint will eventually be very upset with you.

Can anyone else confirm whether or not this is true? 3g with prl 1115 only works in 5 states?
Use the search button or try it yourself.
It's not hard to load a pro,
Netmonitor will tell you if your roaming and if you have 3g

It works in Houston, Texas area. When my discount with Sprint was through Dish Network all my devices would have the business PRLs. I found a way to change my discount from 16% to 20% by creating a AOL email. Anyway since doing that I no longer get the business PRLs. Not worth the 4%, since I no longer work with Dish Network I am stuck with this AOL discount

I'm not sure that is correct... I am in Pennsylvania and both 1115 & 1119 give me 3g in forced roam all the time. Both Alltel & Verizon are good to go.

Unless if things changed as of a few months ago. Sprint doesn't have 3g in our state. I live in pa as well.

I've been using 1115/1119 in CA and am now getting 3g speeds when roaming. That's when Sprint doesn't push the stupid 60686 to my device.
11115 Works for 3g in Seattle area... and +1 to Roam Control...

But what do they mean? Faster download speeds? Voice and data at the same time? Is it simply marketing BS?

I don't think is voice and data at the same time because CORRECT ME if I'm wrong someone BUT I believe that's a cdma issue BUT to answer your question......Enhanced 3G is just that, is better 3G! Improved 3G speeds....NOTHING more, NOTHING less!

Not to worry... it is a new compression algorithm to get more data packets into the same bandwidth. It should improve the speed of 3G data networks.
It is about 50/50 improvement vs marketing.

No, that's only LTE.
Voice does not transmit over 3g, wimax or LTE HD voice is sent over 1x-Advanced. 3g. WiMax and LTE all are used for data and MMs only, voice and SMS go over the 1x channel, CDMA limits the use of 1x or 3g/wimax to one or the other at a time, once LTE is available when using it you will be able to simultaneously use voice and data, theoretically, since LTE will be using a SIM card for its activation, much the same way VZW LTE works.

Its rev.a but with better compression and abackhaul that will allow for about 5x the current bandwidth per tower giving off higher aand more consistent speeds

I've only used wimax 2 or 3x, but it would make sense since it is a separate radio and wimax doesn't handle voice. The biggest benefit to LTE is its going out everywhere 3g is now and should have same or similar building penetration. Hell I live in the country 20 miles from town and 40 from a real city and my towers are scheduled for LTE in phase 2 this year which I was surprised but the whole southwest of my state is getting covered in the same rollout something like 200 towers from Sarasota/bradenton to Naples

Being that Boost Mobile runs on the Sprint CDMA network, do any of you think that this new compression will also improve Boost Mobile data speeds or does Boost have their own network filters to regulate the speeds? Add Virgin mobile to that question too. Just curious.

Side Note at att store yesterday: I was at a ATT store checking out the Salaxy Note and a customer came in to exchange his old blackberry because ATT sent him a letter that ATT is getting rid of their 1x or 2x services. Found that interesting kind of how Sprint is going to upgrade all their iDen NextTel network to LTE.

Is there a way to force 4g roaming?

I live in phoenix arizona with no 4g coverage. We had to get rid of our home internet so no ponger able to use our airrave. I have roam control which works on every ics rom ive used but of course 3g speed isnt fast at all.. is there a way to 4g roam whether it be changing my prl or anything?

4G is WiMax, which is a completely separate radio. What you're asking is like saying, "Is there a way to enable Bluetooth roaming". Clearwire is the only WiMax provider anyways, so even if there was a way, there's no where else to run to.
there isnt anything else to roam off of....
short answer, not doable in any way shape form or fashion

Lol yea.. they can do that and i can go with a carrier that has service in my house.. i use almost no data at the moment and under 100 mins talk time a month.. i literraly have used less than .5 gb every month.. only will be roaming while home

they will only boot you if you are consistently using over 300MB a month in data while roaming or if 80% of your minutes are used while roaming (if you use a lot of minutes).
i use roam control everyday and have no issues and never have

Correction:
For data there's no set limit but around what you stated is a reasonable assumption. The 300 MB limit is for laptop cards and data-only plans. As for minutes, if more than half are used roaming, for 3 months in a row, you get a warning letter. Then you get the boot. I'm a former sprint employee who also received the warning letter lol

They have service here.. just not when im inside my house.. step outside and i get good reception.. doesnt matter because i will get internet soon and i don use my sprint data at all or the phone hardly ever.. there just is no 4g coverage

That's for 3g cards/data only plans, on a phone plan its done by percentages and not a hard limit its 80%of total mins/month or 50%total data/month

Epic 4g Touch on Boost Mobile Flash PRL to roam on Verizon?

I am not getting signal on my Epic 4g Touch flashed to Boost Mobile at all in my apartment unless I go outside. Was wondering what PRL I could flash to roam on verizon, or another carrier. If this can be successfully done. I am running CyanogenMod 9.

I would be careful.... Test it near the end of your billing period in case it works. You may find yourself having to pay for roaming data and voice, so you will want to know quick!

Why does my tmobile data and connection speed suck so bad?

I live in Hesperia, CA. Tmobile 4g network blows here. I just did a speed test and the testing app showed I had a 3g connection while the status bar icon showed it as 4g(screenie added) what's up with that is tmo lying to me? Saying I'm connected to 4g when I'm actually not... I never get above 200kbps during the day, at night I can get 1500kbps but that sucks too. I'm getting so frustrated I switched from metro and their network was better. I got 2500kbps from them.

I guess you can go to the extreme of saying tmobile is lying to you, but in reality no they're not. "4g" just shows when data activity is happening. You are barely over edge speeds though. I would say try different radios and such and look at the map from this post and play around to see which will help you specifically. In the mean time put your phone to edge only so you stop wasting battery lol. [Baseband] ALL T999(V) Modems! w/ MAP and Data Tweaks!

They are misleading intentionally.
Start a big download and go to the dialer, input *#0011#. Take note of the band you are on (2 or 4) and which items have a 1 on them out of HSPA and HSDPA. If you are on band 2 and see a one next to either of those options, you can try forcing 1700 by using *#2263# and choosing it under WCDMA. This will cause you to lose service if you have poor 1700 coverage, particularly for voice calls but you can always set it back by going back to the main 2263 menu and hitting automatic.
If those don't work or you see zeroes have you gone into phone status to see if you have an IMEI? Because that will lock you to UMTS. Shortcut to find out - *#06#

I've tried this using *#0011# and I get an error. I put *#06# and it showed my IMEI yet I was unable to still use those two codes.

I was assuming that you were on a TouchWiz ROM (these codes only work on the Samsung dialer) based on the fact that you had a 4G icon up there - if you're not on stock, there's not an easy way to troubleshoot. If you are on stock, you have to use the built in dialer, not a third party app.
Its worth the time to go to a TW ROM to try to troubleshoot it but if your IMEI came up fine then its less worth the hassle. Wish I could help you out more but it looks like you might be in a highly congested area on the network :/

Its worth the time to go to a TW ROM to try to troubleshoot it but if your IMEI came up fine then its less worth the hassle. Wish I could help you out more but it looks like you might be in a highly congested area on the network :/

my apologies. i was on liquidsmooth with uvmd5 and didnt understand why my download speeds were so slow so i wanted to check what this was all about. im currently switching between uvlja and uvli8 to see which modem works best in my area.
I was on uvlja when I started having the issues so I upgraded to uvmd5 and I am still having the problems. I'm not so sure anymore that the modems are the problem. I'm running DarthstalkerX2 I've been using these roms for quite a while but I've only been experiencing these issues for a couple of months.

Figured it out...
I'm in the Fresno, CA area, and I've been running the UVDM5 modem for a few days. I noticed it has much slower upload speeds, while downloads are a little bit lower compared to the UVLJA
Ok everyone tmobile finally admitted to me that I am in a HORRIBLY BAD congested area of their network. No ETA on a fix either. I was given the option to return the phone cancel service and move on at no extra charge. I have until the 27th to make my decision. What should I do. Stay or go?

If they are admitting it then it must be *REALLY* bad... If data speeds are more important than pricing to you, I say jump ship.

T-Mo is not lying. You're still on their 4G network, but as someone mentioned, it's probably congested. Additionally, for most areas, T-Mo's 3G and 4G network is the exact same technology. If you're paying for the 4G service, they take the "speed limiter" off. Simple as that. Most likely a bad area of Cali for T-Mobile.

I'd like to see your sources for this because 3G UMTS, 3.5G HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+, and true 4G LTE are all different technologies. UMTS maxes out at 384Kbps, HSDPA ranges from 7 to 21Mbps, HSPA+ is up to 21Mbps but includes HSUPA for up to 5.76Mbps upload, and DC-HSPA+ is up to 42Mbps on the downlink with the same 5.76Mbps upload of standard HSPA+. 4G LTE can exceed 100Mbps.
While its true that they all operate off of wideband CDMA technology, they are NOT the same and require tower upgrades... T-Mobile does not discriminate based on your data plan. They discriminate based on your data usage compared to the plan you purchased and throttle you when you exceed what you paid for. Plain and simple.
Get your facts straight before you spout off nonsense.
EDIT: I am not aware if T-Mobile has deployed pico cells for UMTS anywhere but if they have, UMTS can go up to 2Mbps on a pico cell.
