So while I wait for LTE service and a phone that can use it, I keep hearing about Sprint upgrading to "Enhanced 3G.
But what do they mean? Faster download speeds? Voice and data at the same time? Is it simply marketing BS?
I'm not finding an explanation of it anywhere.

I don't think is voice and data at the same time because CORRECT ME if I'm wrong someone BUT I believe that's a cdma issue BUT to answer your question......Enhanced 3G is just that, is better 3G! Improved 3G speeds....NOTHING more, NOTHING less!
I believe its the new HD voice service recently announced.

Not to worry... it is a new compression algorithm to get more data packets into the same bandwidth. It should improve the speed of 3G data networks.
It is about 50/50 improvement vs marketing.

No, that's only LTE.
Voice does not transmit over 3g, wimax or LTE HD voice is sent over 1x-Advanced. 3g. WiMax and LTE all are used for data and MMs only, voice and SMS go over the 1x channel, CDMA limits the use of 1x or 3g/wimax to one or the other at a time, once LTE is available when using it you will be able to simultaneously use voice and data, theoretically, since LTE will be using a SIM card for its activation, much the same way VZW LTE works.

Correct.
wait is sprint finally jumping ship to the much better evdo rev b.? or is it still rev a but updated slightly to make it not as slow?
Its rev.a but with better compression and abackhaul that will allow for about 5x the current bandwidth per tower giving off higher aand more consistent speeds

I've only used wimax 2 or 3x, but it would make sense since it is a separate radio and wimax doesn't handle voice. The biggest benefit to LTE is its going out everywhere 3g is now and should have same or similar building penetration. Hell I live in the country 20 miles from town and 40 from a real city and my towers are scheduled for LTE in phase 2 this year which I was surprised but the whole southwest of my state is getting covered in the same rollout something like 200 towers from Sarasota/bradenton to Naples

Being that Boost Mobile runs on the Sprint CDMA network, do any of you think that this new compression will also improve Boost Mobile data speeds or does Boost have their own network filters to regulate the speeds? Add Virgin mobile to that question too. Just curious.

Side Note at att store yesterday: I was at a ATT store checking out the Salaxy Note and a customer came in to exchange his old blackberry because ATT sent him a letter that ATT is getting rid of their 1x or 2x services. Found that interesting kind of how Sprint is going to upgrade all their iDen NextTel network to LTE.

Is it necessary to be rude when someone asks a question? You may find the question silly, but some people actually do not know all these things. Reading through thousands of posts to find the answers can become very time consuming, and like looking for a needle in a haystack if one is new to the XDA world.
Perhaps try answering the question nicely, offering some advice, and then moving on in a pleasant manner. Just a thought.
how 'bout this.
it's not a problem or a bug, but rather the way sprint set up the network. you can browse and talk on 4g or wifi but not evdo. the only cdma phone that can do that is the thunderbolt and VZW aren't even advertising it as a feature. GSM phones can, just not cdma. hell the cdma iPhone 4 can't do it either.

If you could talk and surf the web at the same time on 3G then you are the only one, EVER.
It is not possible on Sprint's network to do that without being in a 4g area.
... there are some rude people on here ... let me give you the 411 on this subject to avoid further confusion ...
CDMA Networks:
Sprint
Verizon
Metro
some other ones...
GSM Networks:
ATT
T-mobile
so on and on...
CDMA = 1 Radio for both voice and data
GSM = 2 Radios, 1 for voice the other data
so that being said, there is a physical impossibility (not improbability) that you were ever able to browse the web and talk at the same time using any CDMAonly phone for both unless you did any of the folowing:
1. VOiP service where your voice is data, in which case you are only using DATA and not VOICE
2. you had a global phone in which case you used both, CDMA for voice and GSM for data or vice-versa
3. used WIFI or 4g for data and CDMA for voice
4. a device that has 2 CDMA radios
Definitely something I missed from AT&T..

Not to instigate an argument, but last I heard, GSM could do voice and data simultaneously not because it has multiple radios, but that's just how the network works as a feature of GPRS.

That's correct; GSM phones [AT&T as an example] use a different radio for 3G and voice. CDMA [sprint, verizon] use the same radio for data and voice. You can surf and talk if you are using wifi or 4G though.
Because Sprint sucks. :-D. and CDMA sucks too. :-D There are A BUNCH OF limitations on CDMA. Wonder if anyone has a link to all the limitations of it. then also compares GSM and other american based networks. :-D

You can do the following:
Install grove Ip, set it to use 3g/4g enter ur google voice info, and make phone calls over data, then u can surf and talk same time. Now if u get a real phone call ur call will drop though, unless u set ur phone to ignore calls while using data.

To better answer/consolidate the above replies:
When you are on 3G data (watching a youtube video, on the web browser, etc) you will still get phone calls, however the data connection will stop to allow the phone call to take place. You will also be able to receive text messages however the data will stop for a brief second (the phone actually goes to 1x for a brief second)
When you are on 4G LTE, you can make phone calls with no problem. The data connection will remain active and you can talk at the same time.

Yes you still get calls. Unless you enable DDTM from settings. Which sends calls straight to vm if you're on active data.
There are cdma phones that do talk and surf but unfortunately our Notes is not one of them even though it came out after all the others ones that can! Damn Samsung Retards.. :banghead:

This is not entirely Samsung's fault. This is a 3g CDMA radio tech problem requiring SVDO being needed....and Samsung making a multi-carrier handset that has identical hardware.
And yes you can talk and surf so long as you either have LTE and 3g available or have wifi and 3g available.

I've read a few times and I'm a bit confused. You say it's a 3G CDMA radio tech problem requiring SVDO and Samsung making a multi-carrier handset that had identical hardware. Ok.. Wasn't the GS3 a multi-carrier handset with identical hardware? It handles it fine on Sprint's 3G.
The other thing that has me confused was when you said:
And yes you can talk and surf so long as you either have LTE and 3g available or have wifi and 3g available. Were you referring to the GS3 or the Note? Because the Note can't handle calls and web surfing on 3G.

And this is the exact answer I needed to hear. That explains it thoroughly. Which brings me to my next question. Why didn't they go with the qualcomm instead of going backwards? It's like technology advances for CDMA 3G and then Samsung decides to take a step backwards.
Edit: Nevermind I got my answer. Sprint/Samsung sacrificed SVDO for WCDMA support instead. At least that's what I'm getting from researching.

Yes I picked that up when researching and people saying is the processor, but sgr4u and a few others speculated it really was put aside for WCDMA support for faster 3G due to the placing if antennas. Which to me makes perfect sense because if Samsung can get LTE to work on their chips what's SVDO to them?

I guess you can go to the extreme of saying tmobile is lying to you, but in reality no they're not. "4g" just shows when data activity is happening. You are barely over edge speeds though. I would say try different radios and such and look at the map from this post and play around to see which will help you specifically. In the mean time put your phone to edge only so you stop wasting battery lol. [Baseband] ALL T999(V) Modems! w/ MAP and Data Tweaks!

They are misleading intentionally.
Start a big download and go to the dialer, input *#0011#. Take note of the band you are on (2 or 4) and which items have a 1 on them out of HSPA and HSDPA. If you are on band 2 and see a one next to either of those options, you can try forcing 1700 by using *#2263# and choosing it under WCDMA. This will cause you to lose service if you have poor 1700 coverage, particularly for voice calls but you can always set it back by going back to the main 2263 menu and hitting automatic.
If those don't work or you see zeroes have you gone into phone status to see if you have an IMEI? Because that will lock you to UMTS. Shortcut to find out - *#06#

I was assuming that you were on a TouchWiz ROM (these codes only work on the Samsung dialer) based on the fact that you had a 4G icon up there - if you're not on stock, there's not an easy way to troubleshoot. If you are on stock, you have to use the built in dialer, not a third party app.
Its worth the time to go to a TW ROM to try to troubleshoot it but if your IMEI came up fine then its less worth the hassle. Wish I could help you out more but it looks like you might be in a highly congested area on the network :/

I'm in the Fresno, CA area, and I've been running the UVDM5 modem for a few days. I noticed it has much slower upload speeds, while downloads are a little bit lower compared to the UVLJA
Ok everyone tmobile finally admitted to me that I am in a HORRIBLY BAD congested area of their network. No ETA on a fix either. I was given the option to return the phone cancel service and move on at no extra charge. I have until the 27th to make my decision. What should I do. Stay or go?

If they are admitting it then it must be *REALLY* bad... If data speeds are more important than pricing to you, I say jump ship.

I live in Hesperia, CA. Tmobile 4g network blows here. I just did a speed test and the testing app showed I had a 3g connection while the status bar icon showed it as 4g(screenie added) what's up with that is tmo lying to me? Saying I'm connected to 4g when I'm actually not... I never get above 200kbps during the day, at night I can get 1500kbps but that sucks too. I'm getting so frustrated I switched from metro and their network was better. I got 2500kbps from them.

T-Mo is not lying. You're still on their 4G network, but as someone mentioned, it's probably congested. Additionally, for most areas, T-Mo's 3G and 4G network is the exact same technology. If you're paying for the 4G service, they take the "speed limiter" off. Simple as that. Most likely a bad area of Cali for T-Mobile.

I'd like to see your sources for this because 3G UMTS, 3.5G HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+, and true 4G LTE are all different technologies. UMTS maxes out at 384Kbps, HSDPA ranges from 7 to 21Mbps, HSPA+ is up to 21Mbps but includes HSUPA for up to 5.76Mbps upload, and DC-HSPA+ is up to 42Mbps on the downlink with the same 5.76Mbps upload of standard HSPA+. 4G LTE can exceed 100Mbps.
While its true that they all operate off of wideband CDMA technology, they are NOT the same and require tower upgrades... T-Mobile does not discriminate based on your data plan. They discriminate based on your data usage compared to the plan you purchased and throttle you when you exceed what you paid for. Plain and simple.
Get your facts straight before you spout off nonsense.
EDIT: I am not aware if T-Mobile has deployed pico cells for UMTS anywhere but if they have, UMTS can go up to 2Mbps on a pico cell.

Can I use another 4G LTE provider on the Galaxy Note II from Sprint?
I have Boost Mobile and I had a Galaxy S2 with Clear.com 4G WiMax. I now can only get 3G, and as you ALL know the 3G speed has lowered quite a bit. (200~400k vs 700~900k 3 years ago)
Another alternative I guess would be to get a Hotspot, but who wants to carry around a phone AND a hotspot when you can have them both on the phone?
I believe you can use this device on any network that is actually using Sprint towers, like MetroPCS (?) or Boost?
There are threads somewhere for instructions on flashing this.
(i'm also talking out my ass, because I have only noticed these threads in passing, never actually researched this. But I bet if you Searched a bit, you'd find the info.)
Um LOL. Like the thread right under this one?

Thanks for the info but that's not what I meant. I mean the 4G service, not the voice, talk, text and 3G. I have that already. (that's what the thread under this one does, help you program the Note 2 on Boost, I already did that part. I meant the 4G LTE, i.e. connecting it on Verizon's LTE or T-Mobile's (MetroPCS is now part of T-Mobile I believe?) Heck, even a Sprint LTE account if they allowed it by itself with no talk/text service would be nice.

Impossible to do first off you need to understand how technology and radios work Tmobile is GSM. Sprint and verizon are CDMA and you can only "roam" on 3g verizon with a prl that can get you kicked off, if you abuse it.

Ok, so maybe I do need to do some research. LTE is *not* like WiMax? It doesn't have separate "device" from the actual voice/text/3G radio?
LTE uses the same radio as the cellphone and 3G?

You can't use Verizons LTE because the frequency is different. The sprint note 2 doesn't have versions LTE frequency to pick it up.

right there, see. Metro actually uses Sprint towers (ie, Sprint services) ... So... Same frequency.

are you high? all game providers in the us suck. only tower owners are att and T-Mobile and T-Mobile doesn't have any real 4g neither Winmax nor lte and att has as much lte as sprint (and sprint is going to overtake att with network vision )

I give facts and argument you insult sprint... well of course you are right. who has ever heard of the "can suck it" argument ever loosing. that's how we explained to Hitler and the Japanese emperor that he had to surrender in WW2 "Mr Hitler can suck it" -pres trueman, "since I can suck it I have ordered my forces to surrender and suggested to the Japanese to do the same"-hitler (translated to English)
if you can't give facts to support your claim you can go head and get an iPhone on a gsm network since you are using the same arguments apple uses to ensnare its sheep -i mean- customers
either that or you are an at&t rep or fanboy trying to weakarm customers away from sprint. why you aren't targeting your biggest competitor Verizon is beyond me but take that stuff to T-Mobile customers they'll eat that up like they eat their "unlimited" throttled data
one bad experience in one city with one small period of data speed downturn does not a bad carrier make
oh and mods don't blame chuko (or me) for starting arguments. arguments are healthy and help shape perception

In all fairness, Sprint in Denver does suck... 3g speeds right now. 200 kbps and no lte. There are a few lte towers popping up. but not in the metro area. Person in the cube next to me has AT&T and hspa+ is 15mbps and lte 40mbps. Faster than the cable provider here!
