I'd like to know how read buffer of sdcard works, does it work per partition, i mean, when we have 2 partition in sd card, (sd-ext and sdcard), we could set it differently, OR it works per disk ? (We could set once for both partition)
Thx in advance

im not sure but I think it is per disk, not different on partitions.

Right. And if you increase the read ahead buffer for the internal flash devices, too, it will give you another speed boost

are u sure ?
btw is that possible to set read ahead buffer of internal memory ? how ?
If I set it as high as possible, does this have a negative effect on sd card like die faster?

No, cause it's for reads only. Highest possible value isn't the best. Try to find your sweet spot.

How to check the current value btw ?
And there is different target (stl12-14), it means the read ahead buffer works per partition right ?
Edit: i explore using root explorer and changed the value via text editor.
My default value is not 4 btw, its 256

4 posts about this and i think i found a way to fix this with windows. it did this to me and worked so thought id share so people dont format the sd card and lose all data.
i put the sd card from my sensation 4g into my computers card reader. in windows 7 i went to start > rightclick "computer" and click manage. i then clicked on "Disk Management" to see what type of condition the sd card was in. it said it was a RAW disk. i started to think and then decided to try a chkdsk to see if it fixes it. to do that i just clicked START > RUN (or START > type in RUN and click the run shortcut) and type in CMD in the box then click ok. now in the command prompt type in CHKDSK X: /R then press the enter key (NOTE: X represents the drive letter). wait for it to do its thing and it should fix this problem.
i am not sure if it will fix it for all cases but atleast it worked for me.
I had this problem only after installing Swift Key X.
Uninstalled Swift Key X , Unchecked fast boot in power options
Powered down phone removed battery for 20 seconds put battery back in
turn on was fixed
If happens again i will try ur method in an attempt to confirm though
yea another thing that has happened was i had to restart the phone a few times and it worked but the first post was a common issue and fixed it when other methods didnt work
Comes up with the SD card is RAW so it can't be done or something :/..
Really don't want to lose the data :/
Hey, it works for me.
and for me..
sd card
does not work?
Even if i format it, the disk keeps going to RAW format.

If you have a rooted phone and your sd is readable by your computer there is no need to format it. Just go to recovery and mount/sdcard.
This problem seems to be a flaw although.

I think the problem is caused by root access to the sd card or kernel compatibility.

No its actually caused by recovery. Install stock recovery and the sdcard blank or unsupported filesystem error might not appear.:beer:

Do you have a partitioned sdcard? The CHKDSK command should detect this.

If you can't mount the sdcard using recovery, such as clockworkmod etc, I don't know whether changing to stock recovery will help.

This problem is not caused by CWM or any modded recovery, I know because this is happening to me on my LG Optimus L9 and I have the stock recovery on my phone. Although it is rooted, but that shouldn't be the cause. It's probably a faulty SD card, I have a 32 gb SDHC and my phone seems to hate it, half the time it tells me the card is blank or unsupported filesystem and wants to format it, the other half of the time it sits for an hour or two just scanning the darn thing. Either it actually is a faulty card, or my phone isn't good at reading large SD cards. So much for 'smart phone'...

Definitely the phone. My computer always manages to read the sd card, so of course, whatever happened to my phone is causing the problem. For me, the problem started immediately when I flashed a Rom after root. I didn't wipe my phone before, is that a fix???

It likely to be something in the /system directory.
Hello,
my HTC One V has a problem with the app installation.
If I want to install apps from Google Play there is an error. It says: "Not enough free memory" or in german "Nicht genügend Speicherplatz verfügbar". But I have over 5GB free space.
Whats the problem?
Please have a look at the screenshots.
See your second screenshot:
Total Space : 0.94GB
Apps : 832MB
Available : 129MB
The available space needed for Play Store to work properly is around 140MB.
Go to Settings - Apps - On Storage - move some files to Storage Card to make more space available for Play Store
Apps installation will go to internal memory, not on sdcard that you still have 5GB free.
Thank you!
But how can I install apps to sdcard?
@ckpv5: but ck some apps are by default directly stored on sdcard. like i installed xda app and it was by default stored on card...why so??

That's depends on how the dev set the App Install Location in it's manifest. If it is set preferExternal; the installation will go to sdcard.

Are you asking how to set default location for app installation to sdcard ?
So whenever you install an app it is automatically go to sdcard ?
What is Swap?
Linux divides its physical RAM (random access memory) into chucks of memory called pages. Swapping is the process whereby a page of memory is copied to the preconfigured space on the hard disk, called swap space, to free up that page of memory. The combined sizes of the physical memory and the swap space is the amount of virtual memory available.
Swapping is necessary for two important reasons. First, when the system requires more memory than is physically available, the kernel swaps out less used pages and gives memory to the current application (process) that needs the memory immediately. Second, a significant number of the pages used by an application during its startup phase may only be used for initialization and then never used again. The system can swap out those pages and free the memory for other applications or even for the disk cache.
However, swapping does have a downside. Compared to memory, disks are very slow. Memory speeds can be measured in nanoseconds, while disks are measured in milliseconds, so accessing the disk can be tens of thousands times slower than accessing physical memory. The more swapping that occurs, the slower your system will be. Sometimes excessive swapping or thrashing occurs where a page is swapped out and then very soon swapped in and then swapped out again and so on. In such situations the system is struggling to find free memory and keep applications running at the same time. In this case only adding more RAM will help.
Linux has two forms of swap space: the swap partition and the swap file. The swap partition is an independent section of the hard disk used solely for swapping; no other files can reside there. The swap file is a special file in the filesystem that resides amongst your system and data files.
I want that on my Phone, how to do that?
Okay, here goes the real story. Since Android is Linux, that would be possible.
What is needed:
- Fast (Class 10) Micro-SD Card, if you dont have class 10, class 4 would be great too..
- CWM or Partitioning software
- Root (of course )
- Terminal Emulator app
- Kernel with swap and init.d support (for example our CM7, 9, 10 and 10.1 ROM)
- Root Exploring app (for example Root Browser or Root Explorer)
Steps:
1. Partition your SD Card, Ask Google how to do that. Make new Swap partition, or you want SD-ext too..
2. Open Terminal Emulator, do:
Code:
su
fdisk -l dev/block/mmcblk0
3. You'll see something like this:
Code:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 1861 1924 514080 82 Linux swap
4. Do the following code, change with your exact swap partition:
Code:
su
swapon /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
*change 3 with yours
5. Now you can check your swap partition by doing:
Code:
free
Now we create the script to do that automatically at boot
1. Open Root exploring apps, head to /system/etc/init.d
2. Make a new file, named 05swap
3. Edit that file, copy this up:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
echo Swap enabled
swapon -a
4. Save it and change the permission to :
V V V
V V V
V V V
*tick all the boxes (rwxrwxrwx)
5. Now head to /system/etc and create new file named fstab
6. Open it and enter this:
Code:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 swap swap
*remember, change the 3 with yours
Now we set the swappiness value
*the normal value is 60, but you can change to what number you want (max 100). Higher may help to improve overall performance, while setting it to lower may increase interactivity and overall stability.
1. Do this on Terminal Emulator
Code:
su
echo vm.swappiness=60 >> /system/etc/sysctl.conf
2. Reboot and you're done.
Thanks to:
- Linux.com (for the swap definitions)
- Segnale007 (for the swap how to)
First! No just kidding. Great guide! Maybe you should cover the Swapper 2, it does it without any second partition.

Is because the command does not use system path, it assumes you're in '/'.

you won't scew anything up doing that. and the only way to get it working is by figuring out what the heck the mount points are and applying them. It only works for external sd card btw. And i would run the commands myself but i don't have the note 3. I kinda want it but it seems too big.

No, it's just the mount info that elesbb asked for. I don't have the expertise to take that and turn it into something useful
I moddified my S4 UMS Widget. if it doesn't work, i am going to need more information. Let me know if it works or not.
It requires root of course. And if it doesnt work keep tapping it till you get back to MTP mode and go under USB setting in settings app and set that to MTP mode and you should be back to normal again. Really wish i had this to help you guys with mods and what not. but i'll do my best.
I tried the UMS Widget you posted. When I connect my phone to my computer with UMS mode from the widget the phone shows up as a CD-ROM drive, not a removable storage. If I try to click on the CD-ROM drive it asks me to insert a disc. Seems very strange to me.

This really sucks not having the device -.- hold on im gonna have to write a "debug/get some info" app to get me some information.
That will happen tomorrow though. Really busy right now. Thanks for all the debugging and info getting!

Without me having the device it's really hard to debug and figure it out. I kinda need to have a live logcat to look at. I know evil1art has it so maybe him and I can do some teamwork on it.
