Hello XDA.
I have a Samsung Galaxy III and I get very low speeds on 4G LTE. My phone is completely stock. No roms, not unlocked, nothing. It sometimes takes me up to 3-4 minutes to open up www.google.com on my phone. I ran some speed tests and come up very short to what LTE should be. My data usage is only about 1 GB a month. I am not being throttled. I have no clue what to do. Please help? I have included a picture of my speed tests... (I had 3 bars when I ran the test)....
Thank you.
*EDIT: my attached picture is not showing up. It shows 0.08 down and 0.16 up. Not cool!
What modem are you on? If you're not in the newest I'd flash the newest modem. If it constant no matter where you go then I'd say its bad hardware that your internal antenna is bad and you should take it in, but you can call your service provider firat and have them refresh your network on your phone for you. That's WAY below AT&T's threshold and would deem that faulty if they can't fix it with a refresh.

I'm on LK3 modem.
I called AT&T yesterday, was on the phone for over 1 hour, they reset everything and tried but nothing. It's not always this bad. I have noticed after 2am it goes up to 4mbps. They did not fix it with a refresh. After about an hour they put in a ticket for me. They said it should be good in a week. But I doubt that.
Thanks for the reply. I really do want to get this fixed.

Yeah you could flash another modem and see if that fixes it or you could just call it faulty and go up to att and show them. They probably will send you to a warranty location and you'll get a new device but usually its a drive to get there atleast for me it is. At this point I'd just take it back and to hell with the bs they feed to so they dont have to replace the device. Good luck hopefully you can get it resolved.
After more tests, 4G which is HSPA+ is faster than 4G LTE.
on 4G I got 5mbps, which I am happy about. with LTE I get 0.08 mbps. weird.

I'd def take that it because if that holds true then with lte you should be getting amazing fast speeds like 10 to 15mbps higher than 4g. When I'm in Chicago I'm at 32mbps download on lte and 18mbps on non lte and when I'm in my hometown its only 5 to 10 Mbps on lte and maybe 1 or 2mbps on non lte.
This was when I just in the city for work. It was wondeful but I pretty much blew through my 3GB data package with it.
Thank you DamageSource. I'm glad you replied. I am going to take it in today to an AT&T store. I noticed when I was at the bank today I got 20 mbps!!! am I crazy? is my phone acting up? How can service be really ****ty where I work and where I live but the bank is ok? My area has full LTE coverage. I'm gonna try a SIM card switch first, and then see what happens.
EDIT* Another thing I noticed, my network is not LTE it says "cell"

*Update: Got my sim card replaced, of course when I was in the store I had 4G LTE and 4 bars of signal and I got 6 mpbs download. I said sure I will take that for the meantime, however as soon as I stepped out of the AT&T store I get 1.5 mpbs. I think it might be my antenna or phone? This is so weird. I have never had this problem before. I seriously cannot use my phone for anything besides text and calling.
What should I do? I doubt they will replace it for free. They will say some bull**** about how I dropped it in water or on the ground or something. My phone has never touched water and has been in an otter box case the whole time.
I honestly feel trapped. Do I have to dish out $$$ on a brand new phone?
Sorry for the rant, just tired and frustrated.
1.5mpbs be thankful about that in los angeles with so many people using LTE espically where i live & work I usually get around .15mps. As soon as I go out of LA area i get 15mpbs+.
Imo AT&T should put more towers and upgrade the towers that is being used most frequently, and not advertise LTE EVERYWHERE where the population might be 100 people.

Well they can see if its water damages by a sticker so if its never been wet don't worry about it. Also just keep the speed test data and go up there later and show them. I was once told the att stores have tower amplifiers at the stores to give you better speeds when you're looking at them in the store. Just show them and demand it. That's what I did before when this thing had no data and full bars.

I got a email saying my issue has been resolved. However I get 0.26 down/ 0.15 up.
I called back and they reopened the issue and will send it higher up. and it should be fixed by February 2nd. I feel like they are dicking me around. It sucks when my friends get around 20 mbps and I get 0.04 - 0.64 mbps down. I told them about how you got a new phone that fixed the issue but they didnt even mention is and told me to "turn off and turn on my phone". BS!

You're better off going up to the store. On the phone you can't get anything done. They just feed you more and more crap until you either go up there or just stop caring. Like I said, keep the speed test logs and show up there and don't take no for an answer. You are a paying customer paying for lte not 2G speeds.

I was at the Brewer's game last night, and the loss of service was horrible. I literally rebooted 18 (I counted) times during the game, that was just to get my missed text messages.
Scary thing is that I had nearly full bars showing for the cellular signal, but the 3G was terrible. Every time the 3G dropped too low, it took both the 3G and cellular service with it, and it never came back. At one point, I rebooted 5 times in a row, and still had no service (no data, and texting/calling would not work), even though I was showing nearly full reception.
I couldn't keep the radios working long enough to even successfully use Roam control. By the time I was able to switch to roaming (on Cellular One, apparently), the radios were already crashed, and I still had no service (even though I still had no indication).
About halfway through the game, I finally started getting the triangle notification "You have lost data services be...." Toggling roaming policies and roam guards did nothing to make this go away... Whether I was in forced roam or on Sprint.
I assume that there was a lot of network congestion at a playoff game, but clearly this phone does not handle network congestion well. I never had this problem with the Samsung Moment, and it saddens me to think that that piece of crap does ANYTHING better than the ET!
I wonder if the low data signal somehow creates a cascade of events that tells the phone to shut down the radios?
I never experienced LOS until yesterday and it's hit me 5 times now since. I reverted back to stock kernel for the time being, but I'm afraid it'll happen again since it's even a stock problem (from what I've heard.)
There is a kernel in the dev section to fix LOS. Take a look at lostkernel.

I'm running the stock with root (flashed CWM, then flashed the root .zip).
I forgot to mention that after the game in the parking lot (about 4 blocks from the stadium) a reboot set my phone working perfectly fine again, so I'm thinking its a combination of something Sprint's network tells our phone, and then something in Samsung's kernel goes "Duh...."

That stinks about the phone though :-( I hope it's something that gets resolved, sorry you had to mess with it during the game.
Roam Control periodically does a license check when you start it. If you don't have data, and it decides to check the license, you are SOL.
As for rebooting, it was necessary to reboot because that's the only time I got text messages. We had two sets of two seats, and texting was the only way to communicate with people 3 second away.
Perhaps you should spend some time with kindergartners and take some etiquette lessons. Although they might be too advanced in that area for you to learn much.

Great. Let's see you try to set up meeting places, or exit strategies with people you can't communicate with. Or are you the rude type that would barge into the middle of somebody else's section?

Sprint's 3G in Milwaukee is not working at all. Sprint offered to let me out of contract free because of the 3G being out since June and still not fixed.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I live in Milwaukee as well and I can vouch for how terrible the 3g is here. I only use about 1 gig a month in data on a light month and about 2 gigs a month on a heavy month. I even tried using my slingplayer as much as I could keeping it on for a few hours at a time for a whole month and I barely used 3 gigs!! When Verizon gets a nice phone with LTE I'm ditching sprint for a network that actually works here. And I don't care about the caps because I don't even use that much to begin with. And if Sprint ends up getting LTE in Milwaukee by 2013 maybe I'll come back...but since sprint has no wimax here...and they won't fix the 3G, I'm guessing Milwaukee will be the very last city to get LTE.....

First off, I've done multiple data resets since I activated the phone last month, and 3G data has not improved one bit.
Second, according to other posts, I obviously am not the only one with a data problem in my city, so posting here helped me with some evidence to go to Sprint and get credit or out of my contract, doesn't it?

The ONLY place I get decent 3G speeds is by the airport. Just did a speed test, and I got 1.3mbs down... Everywhere else in the city, I average somewhere around .15, which is basically 1xRTT speeds.
How did you go about getting the offer to let you out of the contract? Did you have to call multiple times? Honestly, I'm hoping that this phantom update that's supposedly coming this month actually fixes something, but with Samsung/Sprint, I'm not holding my breath.
I go back to my experience with the Moment. Sprint put out several updated, but never managed to fix the data lock problem (which also cut out voice service, which is eerily similar to what's happening here). It took the devs over at SDX to fix the problem by porting Froyo over from the Acclaim (or maybe it was the Intercept... I forget).
Bonus information: By the airport there is a 4G tower that's active. I can pull 3mbs at work, and if I go about 6 blocks north, I can pull 11mbs.

Yeah, that's my worry. Sprint doesn't seem to have any logical progression of cities they implement 4G in. Milwaukee is a Top 20 city (by population), so you'd think they'd be in the first wave. But no, they'd rather put 4G in Milledgville, GA, population 19,000 before a city with 500,000.
Just got mine on today from the retail store the guy activated a new Sim card for me and my data speed is terribly slow it doesn't even seem like it's 3g . Any ideas why its so slow?

what phone did you have before and how much did you use your data....could be tmobile throtteling
I'm only getting about 5-6Mbps which I would get on my MT4G... but it's the service in this area, not the phone's fault
HOWEVER
I am getting such bad upload speeds it's puzzling.. giving the phone time to adjust, I'll test again tomorrow because for some reason anytime I change phones the data connection seems to act weird the first day..
The phone in my store which is in a 42mbps area gets 15mbps with every test I did.
I'm getting 8 - 12 Mbps avg.
Just did a test right now and got 10,390 kbps using a 1MB file.
Seems pretty much the same as my HD2.
Remember that HSPA+ speeds are theoretical, the chances of you reaching those speeds are slim.
ok so after two t mobile calls and numerous network resets im getting absolutely ****ty speed test results. the browsing is ok but seems to be really laggy. hmm..
also noticed under settings/aboutphone/signal/MobileNetworkType i get UMTS and it will switch to HSPA randomly. could this be the reason? or should it say HSPA+? can someone verify this?
You won't get 4G speeds everywhere.
im aware of this..
i had a sgs4g which i lost 2 weeks ago and it was nothing like this.
it feels like my connection is capped at 56k
It could be the network, there could just be a lot of congestion. It happens to me sometimes too, one day I'll get 12mbps & the next I won't be able to get over 5. Try your sim in another phone if you can & see if you get the same results.
i used to get anywhere from 5mbps to 15mbps with the sgs4g.
im ashamed to say that i am getting half a mbps. lol
Speeds suck near Phoenix 2.4mbps
i talked to t mobile couple days ago, the technical support had to issue a ticket in order for it to get resolved. the lady said that my Internet should be back to speed in 3 days! Its not phone related its definitely a network glitch of some sort because i am getting 60 kbits. My very first bill cycle is days shy from being over and yet i have not been able to use 4g speeds.. even edge speeds is faster than what i am getting. I believe i shouldn't be held responsible to pay the web data portion of my bill for this month. its only fair.
Try this (if you haven't already).
Pull up your dialer, then dial
*#*#4636#*#*
Select "phone information"
Scroll to the bottom and select
Either "WCDMA Preferred" or "WCDMA Only".
This can be changed from the network settings also. However, I had ****ty data speeds at first too and, for some strange reason, the two menus did not match up... Using the dialer method it was on GSM and inexplicably went back to GSM on its own a couple times.
Hate to say... But if tmo says they are filing a ticket, most of the time the rep just exhausted what their knowledge or troubleshooting is telling them to do and a ticket doesn't change anything.
The GS2 should unquestionably whip the MT4G, HD2, SENSATION as well as most other phones in data speeds, consistently. I can say this from personal experience.
Interested to know how it turns out for you.

I thought the same thing but tmo said I'm not throttled. gsm/wcdma(auto) is checked.
Thank for the advice though.
Edit: I put the Sim back in my vibrant and the speeds are the same. So I'm going with bad Sim or they are throttling me and don't know it. To be continued.
So they put in a work order and said they will get back to me within 72hrs. If it's not fixed I'm going to sprint. Tried the Sim in the amaze and sgs2 in store same speeds. Funny thing one of the questions asked while filling out the work order "do you tether?" Lol. Of course not.
I'm getting as high as 13mbps and almpst 2 upload speed. My g2x got half of that at best most of the time...

I was wondering if anyone else had similar issues like this in the RDU area.
When I go to make a call, whether it be to another mobile phone, or a landline phone that has caller waiting. I get a busy signal. This happens on Sprint networks and roaming networks. I can resolve the issue by either powering the phone off and turning the phone back on, or by putting the phone in airplane mode and then turning airplane mode off again.
Has anyone else run into this issue in the RDU area? Specifically near Apex, Cary, and Raleigh? Or is this issue specific to me? The issue persists between wipes, and flashes of the OTA files, so I am pretty sure it isn't a phone problem anymore.
It's network side.
I've been seeing a lot of service issues across NC in the systems, it's not just the RDU area. Winston and Charlotte markets are encountering this also.
I actually think that Sprint's either tweaking the towers or implementing Network Vision. When the tower closest to my store went down, it was hell. It just came back up the first of this week, but we've noticed that 3G is blazing fast now.

I really hope this is the case. I live close to Garner and the signal in and around southeast Wake County is almost unbearable. I have been tempted to look at other carriers, but I am giving Sprint a little more time, hoping they will come around. I travel all across NC for work too, and it seems like it has gotten much worse over the last 2-3 months.

I noticed i could only get 1x when i was on that side of town the other day Sunsparc. I actually saw this happen about a month or two around the tower thats by Harris Teeter and the Ymca. Hopefully they're updating all the salisbury towers.
I hope they get it worked out. The last week or so I've had more 1x signals than I've ever seen in places around Winston that are normally strong 3g areas. I was also surprised when I was in Raleigh last week that there was no 4g around the downtown area and the 3g was crap as well.

Called them up today and they said the only issue that they have been informed of is EVDO data issues.
So, I am stuck, because it is happening between wipes, Sprint says there isn't a problem, and I am not sure what else is going on.
Anyone have any other ideas?

Customer Care is going to tell you it's a device issue to get you off the phone. Go to your nearest repair location and ask them to put in a CTMS ticket for your phone. They should already be doing this for anyone complaining of signal issues where the device is found to not be at fault.

Yeah, so I attempted to do that today.
Went to the store, and they immediately told me that there was a tower outage, and they wouldn't pull my phone back and do any form of diagnostics. So, what I did was call up customer service, then explain to them what was going on and ask them to speak to a tech at the store.
After a while, they told me there were two tower outages, that were blocking 14% and 90% of calls, and then gave me the phone back and was told that the ETR was over the next two days.
To be honest, the techs there are not always the friendliest, especially the older one that works in the cary location, I have had the pleasure of dealing with him multiple times. Generally why I like to call more often than not.
As far as the CTMS ticket goes, is there any information that I should give them? I was given an ETR for one of the two towers that was told to me to be having issues.
Not sure if you can check, but they said Tower Number: RA74XC340 was experiencing issues.
Is this still a problem for anyone else? I have been having this issue happen continually.
I bought a Tmobile Galaxy S3 on new years from staples, and since ive got the phone ive been experiencing strange 4g speeds. While im in my house, I always have full signal strength, and it always says 4G. I live in the Bronx in New York City, and when the 4g is working properly, I get upwards of 20 megabits down, and 1-2 up. Now I could literally be sitting in the exact same spot, and later ill test the phone and it says 0.2 - 0.3 megabits, and like over 1000 ping and the up is so slow it doesnt even measure it. It usually comes back after waiting, turning airplane mode off and on multiple times or doing a battery pull. I find it strange that I can get either 21 mbps or 0.3 in the same house, while always having full bars. In the phone status sometimes it would say UTMS or HSPA, so it does switch from 3g to 4g sometimes. The thing is my previous phone was Nexus S with 3g and im pretty sure I never had a problem loading a simple image in my house because the internet was so slow. I consistently pulled 3-6 mbps on that phone. I tried calling t-mobile 3 times and they give me the same basic crap, like clear your cache, make sure airplane mode is off (really?) make sure youre network mode is on auto (i tried auto and wcdma only and it still gets slow) and all that other stuff. Is there anything else I could try to see if its a network or phone issue?
It sounds like it might be something with your local tower. I would call Tmobile and put in a repair ticket.

Thanks, I just did that. Called t-mobile and just directly asked them to check for tower issues, and they filed a complaint. They said to check back in 3 days, hopefully this gets fixed, or else it might be the phone. Do you think flashing different modems would change anything?

It wouldn't hurt to try. What are you currently running? (rom/kernel/modem)

Completely stock 4.1.1, with UVDLJA modem, which is the latest I believe. The phone is relatively new so I wanted to try touchwiz before I rooted. Does installing something like cm10 change the modem? Or is it independent of rom/kernel. I saw an application for tmo that can change between multiple modems pretty quickly, I might give it a try.

I work for T-Mo,
If I may lend my opinion,
To me, it definitely sounds like the tower. If you go from 20Mbit down to 0.2, and with 1000ms latency, it's super obvious there is something
wrong with the tower, or there is significant demand on the tower from other users, hey its NYC population density is insane.
Something to note as well, New York City is "in progress" for "network modernization" where they are switching to 1900Mhz.
This is why some people who have iPhones are now getting 3G in certain areas, unlocked devices, as well as AT&T phones can have 3G down there.
Due to this, since there is quite a lot of switching around going on down there, that's probably what's going on.
Example:
http://www.tmonews.com/2013/01/t-mobiles-network-modernization-what-is-it-where-can-i-get-coverage/
Hope it helps.
I see, well that makes sense. I dont really mind if its a tower issue because thatll be fixed eventually, I just would of hated if I had to replace the phone, it would of been such a hassle because I didnt buy it direct from t-mo. Thanks to both of you!
Also, since t-mobile seems to be using multiple bands for 4g, I guess it would be better to leave it on auto in network settings?

If it helps you at all to see if you are on a different band than 1700/2100mhz
You can go into the dialer and do:
*#0011#
Up top mine says band 4
Which is for 1700mhz AWS
BAND 2
which is for 1900mhz PCS.
You might be on band 4 or 2 on a tower by tower basis, or if they are making adjustments
You might be switched but that is above my pay grade lol
I get horrible signal all over the San Francisco area. Inside my home half the time I can't even make a call. Before I just give up on Sprint I thought I'd try installing the latest stock rom and whatever updates it has and see if that helps.
Can anyone tell me where I can find the latest ota update for the Sprint note 4? Would prefer to keep it rooted.
And if anyone has any other suggestions to improve the signal on the phone, I'm all ears.
Thanks

Try hybrid x rom v3...5.1.1....and you might find a very smooth and highly tweaked rom...including ael kernal and modem

I went to SF in early Feb. this year, my Sprint Note 4 got pretty decent signal in Moscow center area. I even got weak but enough to make phone call signal in one of the big tree parks, where my friend did not get any signal at all (T-mobile). Did you ask the representative at Sprint side? It may be a phone problem.

i should have posted this info with the original post
phone is currently running:
LRX22C.N910PVPU1BOB7
prl 55028
signal strength in my house is -106dBm 33 asu
I've also emailed/called sprint about this issue - been told towers are getting upgraded. After a few months of that I was told maybe I have a bad phone and to take it into the sprint store and have them check it out. The guy in the sprint store was either a total idiot or a lying asshole cuz he said he couldn't do anything to test the phone and i should just get an airave - and proceeded to tell me it doesn't use my internet connection it just boosts the cell signal.
The only reason I haven't already left sprint is I'm on an old SERO plan and get unlimited data for $50/mo. But i almost never go over 1gb a month so having a cheap unlimited plan doesn't really do me much good when i never get a good signal.

I have the same problem with a low signal at my house and I'm in los angeles. a sprint representative went to my job and I just happen to ask him and he said just get airave to boost signal and that it was free. I called sprint right now and they were updating my profile but got disconnected due to low battery on my house phone. I'm going to ask her if she can compensate me for my dropped calls and data issues since my bro and I have been with them for about 10 years.

I think this whole 'its boosts the signal' is bull. Why does it need a fast internet connection if it's just boosting the signal? I had an airave 2-3 years ago because I lived somewhere with barely any cell signal and was told as long as i had a fast reliable internet connection, the airwave would work, and it did.
Only reason i don't get one now is because the wifi calling on the phone is very unreliable and I'm worried the same thing will happen with the airave. Plus the airave doesn't solve the problem of a poor signal everywhere else i go.
If i were you, and sprint can't resolve the problem, i'd dump them. It's not worth the hassle just for them to give you a few bucks in credit every few months.

so does the airave need to be connected to wifi so I can get signal or what? I'm lost lol.
I would drop them, but I just upgraded to the note 4 about a month ago and also have an old plan with them were its hella cheap for unlimited data.. it's hard to choose. I love the unlimited internet but not the speeds, other companies might have faster speeds but for more pay and I hardly work as it is.

Airave connects to your router (ethernet) and works great. Had one for a couple years. A nice thing about them is you can get simultaneous voice and data (because of wifi), while your at home anyway.
If you go that route DON'T let them charge you. You'll have to pay the administration fee but that's only $2 a month . If you call them every month they will credit that back.

I dont remember if the airave i had worked over wifi - it might have needed a wired connection. but that was a couple of years ago.
Are you on the SERO plan? That's what i am on - it is great for the unlimited data but since I can't seem to get a good signal anywhere near i live the unlimited data isn't that useful. Plus i don't use that much data on the phone anyhow.

ahh that is pretty neat. I wouldn't mind having that at the house. the service agent at sprint told me its free and that I didn't have to pay for anything. if I have to call every month, idk lol...

yes I believe I'm my bro and I are zero plan. I am not completely sure but I know the data is cheap...I use data all the time because the internet connection(wifi) doesn't reach my room so I have to use data unless I use chromcast I try and use wifi
I have similar issues here in Las Vegas. Contacted Sprint and was given the usual pre programmed responses and troubleshooting steps which did nothing. I occasionally use Wi-Fi calling but it's not always reliable and periodically disconnects. I requested airwave and the rep advised me I would have to change my connectivity to gsm as it only works over 3G...Sprint, nothing but the best?
