Good morning,
I am about to trade my GS3 for a note 2. But the owner says the phone won't read the sim card. Can this be fixed

Get the IMEI number and make sure it's not being blocked or blacklisted, make sure it's not attached to EIP plan. Get the original sales receipt to verify it was purchased outright. Meet at a T Mobile store and have him remove it from his account and transfer to yours so it can't be reported stolen or lost and blacklisted down the line. Also, have the owner write out a bill of sale in the store. Anyone not willing to do this is no bueno.
As far as the SIM not being read try a different SIM while at T Mobile, that being said be careful buying these phones used, a lot of people bought them used and then the phone was blacklisted, protect yourself.

Besides the good advice from the above poster, I had a Sim tray break and since it is connected to the board, it was more expensive to fix than by a new phone. Just be very careful as said in the post above! Good luck.

You may be stuck. Did you get any type of proof of purchase off the person. Anyway to prove you bought it from a legitimate owner?

Without being able to prove you bought the phone in a legit deal probably nothing. Craigslist is full of this. I also got my phone from craigslist but had the guy meet me at a t mobile store and got a t mobile rep to verify the transaction.

There is one of three reasons you're blacklisted.
The phone was reported lost/stolen to Asurion and a claim was made.
The phone is a T-Mobile demo device that was stolen.
It was purchased on a Value plan and the customer defaulted on the bill.
You can try tinkering with the efs but no idea what trouble that will get you in or if that works on the GS2. If you can find the craigslist ad or money order receipt they may reverse it but it might have to go to risk assessment and take awhile.

I was wondering if they considered a difference between lost and stolen. But again, i was told they blacklist for reasons that directly affect them - fraud, theft from a store, or not making payments.

I thought asurion required that you file a police report if you told them someone stole it before they filed your claim? If you say its lost and found it later they may not blacklist it assuming that most people will . I have heard that at times asurion will allow you to keep your found phone if you claim lost then found it later. Not 100% sure on that.

yeah I don't think tmobile or asurion will blacklist a phone if it was lost because if found, it can still be used. However, if someone purposely stole a phone from a store/person, then it would be blacklisted. Not 100% sure but sounds about right.
well the phone is brand new condition. no scratches nothing. you think ill be able to sell it for only $200?

Bought a Galaxy S III off Craigslist - Stuck in Demo Mode - Fixed it.

So, some n00b tried to pull a fast one on me and sell me a S3 that was stuck in demo mode. Didn't notice when I first got it because I was in a rush. Phone is absolutely in MINT condition, looks like it's been in a box forever. I'm thinking it was owned by a store to display in a transparent cube box thing? I don't know. I know it isn't stolen, though. It has all the paperwork and whatnot.
Anyway, it kept booting into demo mode, and it wasn't just an app, it was a bunch, it didn't allow USB Debugging or mounting, etc.
So, I tried to ODIN, same thing.. it formatted everything, but demo mode was still there.
I researched, seems no one has had this problem.
So, me not trying to panic, I thought logically. I thought it may be written in the NAND.
Therefore, a simple tick with ODIN 'NAND Erase All' did the trick.
Just wanted to share my story with you guys. This S3 will be my mom's phone as I have a white one.
Happy flashing!
how much did you bought it

It really sounds stolen, I can't think of why a device intended for purchase would ever have demo mode on, and paperwork is easy enough to fake. Although hopefully for your sake it's not! It's possible an employee stole it, so it's possible it won't ever be reported as stolen.
craigslist bs
Just recently had issues with few people on craigslist, in the past month two issue. Never once have I had an issue before with any trade or purchase before.
Issue one: traded my galaxy s2 for a galaxy nexus, everything looked to be in working order. Well it has never crossed my mine to check the "usb port" to ensure it charges properly. Ended up sending it in to samsung for repair, that was a nightmare its been nearly a month and I've had no updates on my phone plus it was suppose to be shipped out twice already yet it wasn't. Total debacle! Complaint has been issued and working to resolve it.
Issue 2: Purchased a galaxy note for $260 box and everything with it. I had planned to purchase and trade it for a galaxy s3, set up times to meet both people. Purchased the note that morning at 8:00am and then met up with the seller of the galaxy s3 by about 9am. We exchange phones and check them out the, note excellent condition and gs3 was as well. Seller was unable to test it on t-mobile since he didn't have sim coming from the gs3. Galaxy s3 was unlocked which I need since I'm on local carrier. Few days go buy and I am contacted by the person who I traded the note to. Well it has been blocked by t-mobile, (fraud).
I never worried about this since I'm on a local carrier and once the phone is unlocked I'm good to go. First time ever for this to happen, I have always been honest and open about my transactions I do on ebay & craigslist. Its buyer beware as usual,

It was most likely stolen by an associate from the store. Demo phones come with all the paperwork it just states demo on the box somewhere (usually but not always). So definitely stolen, there isn't any other way to get a demo.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Most likely a store demo that was stolen. 50/50 shot of it being blacklisted or not. Depends on if the store it was stolen from was lazy and just deactivated the sim that was in it and called it good or took it further and sent in the imei to get blocked.

What Should I Do?

On Nov 6th I met up with someone at Starbucks from Craigslist to purchase the Galaxy Note 2 for $450 with box charger and instructions. I checked the esn number and it was clean. I inserted my sim card and was able to use the phone. On Friday Dec 28th, my phone all of sudden couldn't go on the web using 4g and I couldn't make and receive incoming calls. I called T-Mobile using a landline and they said my imei has been blocked. I went to the T-Mobile store and paid $50+ tax to use a loaner phone because I can't be without a phone. Today T-Mobile told me that this phone can't be activated due to equipment installment program. What should I do? Should I sell this phone on eBay and specify that this imei is blacklisted? Maybe someone from around the world could use this phone unlocked. Right now the phone is LOCKED. Should unlocking be my expense or should it be the buyers expense to unlock this phone? Should I use the money I get from selling this device to buy a brand new galaxy note 2?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
Track down the creep who sold it to you and get your money back. Call him and let him know you have contacted the police and they are reviewing the tape from Starbucks and you fully expect to get your money back. Have him meet you at the police station for the refund.
Hey, may not work but worth a try. I'd rattle the hell out of him and would not leave him alone. He knew what he was up to and essentially stole your money. That's not ok.
Outside of saber rattling, it's now your problem. If you like the device enough, just pay whatever T-Mo needs to get it turned back on. You got a good price so whatever they need should still be cheaper than buying a new one.
Edit: well, who knows what T-Mobile needs paid. It may be worth it to just sell as blacklisted and call it a day.
The person who sold me the phone is the only one could make payments toward the phone. Its a lady that sold me the phone.

This is the second time I am hearing of this. I blame tmobile. If you call them to ask if the phone is clean to purchase and they tell you yes then it's their fault for not making sure it doesn't have any outstanding balance. To the Op you have yet to explain why you haven't contacted the seller. The other poster didn't try to contact the seller either. So either you are both idiots or maybe you are trying to figure out how to unlock a stolen phone. And please don't say you can't find the owner because tmobile had there information and with a push from the police they have to give it up.

So instead of dealing with the person that sold you the phone you are going to unlock it? Once again I am calling BS on this and now you have people helping you unlock a phone that is not legally yours.
....... But unlocking won't unblock the IMEI o.0 Unless you're planning to use it on another carrier than Tmo, unlocking won't allow you to use the phone.

I have to agree with this. Tmo wouldn't just tell you the phone was clear & then turn around & say "Oops, we meant to say it's blocked!" If they actually made a mistake when the OP first called in, he needs to escalate until they either unblock him or credit him for a comparable new phone. This whole story just smells funny. I know that if I had just dropped hundreds of dollars on a phone that I couldn't even use thanks to the seller's negligence/fraudulence, I'd be sitting in the police station filing a report within minutes of finding out it was blocked. I can't even imagine just saying "oh well, guess I got scammed!" about something like this. The OP is either incredibly rich & $450 is just pocket change, or else something is fishy here.

I agree with those who say you should hold the lady responsible. Contact her and see if she will make it good. If not, small claims courts is the way to go. I've done two small claims cases. Its easy and not expensive. Sounds like you have a solid case. Of course once you get a judgement you may have a problem collecting if she's a deadbeat. But if she's got an income you can force her to pay up. My 2 cents. Good luck.
Could this phone be activated on Straight Talk? Might be able to get most of your money back via CL if someone wants to use it on prepaid.

I think op meant that he did not see the disclaimer that the imei is bad.
Some sellers try to hide this fact with in small print. And list AS IS. So buyer can not return or claim it as bad product.
I can guess the OP didnt mean accidentally.
The company i work for sells smart phones on Amazon and i have had 2 people in the past 4 months write to me to tel me they accidentally purchased the product and didnt mean to. Either the term accidentally means something else or a very strange set of circumstances happened.
Last week i dealt with a guy who wanted an immediate refund because the purchase was fraudulent. I told him as soon as we get the item back we will refund it. 3 days later he picks it up at the post office and he now is asking me questions about different GSM carriers. LOL yeah fraudulent my ass. Im getting off track. sorry guys and gals..
Im actually not typing this either. It accidentally typed its self. LOL
On the bright side, the device can still be used as a PDA utilizing WiFi, and if all else fails, it can be sold for parts. Note 2 screens are very expensive.

The best thing is to not Buy a phone from Craig s list. Unless its local and you can go to the T Mobile corp store . Have the seller while you are there to get them to look up his account and be sure he has full filled his contract on the phone. And then as you say above get him to have them to Note his account that he sold Said phone to you...
This i think is the only way to protect you in the future. I bought mine off ebay and I got account information from the seller about there account.. Called T-mobile and i was told the phone was purchased outright and was not under and has not ever been under a contract..
These things are expensive Take a few extra steps and protect your investment before you buy
When I sell/buy phones on craigslist I always do it at the carrier. People trying to burn you wont go cause they know you want to chsnge ownership right then. Ive never had a problem doing it this way and most tmobile reps at least around here dont care at all

that doesn't work. last time i talked to a T-mo rep i asked her if i could report my old G2 stolen that has been paid off and on another person's account for over a year and she said yes.
Until T-mo has an official way to transfer complete ownership of the phone, not just notes on my account I won't be buying any additional used phones. too much risk.

IMEI Blacklisted....Help!

I bought a used SGH-T989 off of Craigslist. It worked great for a month. I had it rooted with the Blackliquid ROM. Yesterday it quit working because someone reported it lost and T-Mobile blacklisted my IMEI number. Is there anyway around this blacklist?
Walmart has new S2's on prepaid for $249. Should I just buy a new one or would I be better off with a Nexus 4 for $299? I like the S2 because of the removable battery and SD card. I am concerned about the 8gb storage on the cheaper Nexus 4. If I can't fix the IMEI what cheaper phone should I buy?

There are workarounds for the imei not sure if it'll work or not but I do know u can write a new one, with that said, the nexus is a good device, quick updates, pure vanilla android, but very little storage, no stock ROM image, no rem. battery, the s2 on the other hand is a great device also, lots of development, slow updates but with the devs we have u won't wait, I have 4.3 running less than a month after the first nexus got it lol, 1gb ram hurts sometimes but I would stick with the herc if it was me but hey my opinion is biased lol

I'd try to get your money back since the phone is more than likely stolen. And if someone lost it or it was stolen, they waited over a month to contact T-Mobile??
And it was lost?....its still stolen cause someone found it, kept it and wiped it.....instead of tracking down the owner.
So....try to get your money back. Or do the right thing and return it to its owner....if you called T-Mobile to find out it was reported lost I'm very surprised they didn't ask you to return it....they obviously know who's it is. Or turn in the crook on Craigslist.
This all smells fishy to me. I'd say good luck.....but I actually hope it remains a tiny wifi only tab and never works fully.

When I got my SGH-T989, it worked fine with my AT&T SIM. When I popped in my T-Mobile SIM, the network wouldn't activate.
As part of troubleshooting steps, I checked the IMEI. T-Mobile's site said the phone was reported stolen.
Contact the seller, explain that the phone is stolen, and that you want it returned, or you will take the necessary steps to return the phone yourself (such as contacting the authorities).
This was someone's phone. They bought it. It should be returned to them. Don't keep it.
Do not look for ways around the blacklisted IMEI. It doesn't matter if you gave someone money, it's not your phone.
I contacted T-Mobile and they said they didn't know who the original owner was. I also contacted the person I bought it from on Craigslist and he said he bought from someone off Craigslist and used it for 9 months without any problems. I guess I am stuck with this thing as a mini tablet now or I could unlock it and see if I could sell it to someone who wants it for AT&T.
If you had to start over would you buy a new S2 at Walmart for $249 or get a Nexus 4. I am leaning towards the S2 because I already have a case and extra batteries for it.
