MHL on 4.2.1 AOSP ROMs - Lets get it working! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I want to get the ball rolling on integrating/fixing MHL functionality in 4.2.1 AOSP ROMs, (ie: CM 10.1, AOKP 4.2.1)
I am not a programmer myself but any help that people could provide to get/help the Devs get it back up and working would be amazing.

I hope someone can get it working. I would love to see this so we can use it with the app radio.

Does anyone have insight on where to start?
Do we think it's a driver issue, resource issue.

Mhl did work for me on cm10 m2. I think there were a couple nightly builds it work on too.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Hmm, that could be a good place to start. CM has matured so much since cm10 m2.
If there was a single location, or file that could be plucked from one of the working builds.

Also looking for a fix.

I can confirm that mhl is working on the M2 release.

It would be nice if someone could use that to get it going. There doesn't seem to be much demand though.

It will most likely never work. I believe it is proprietary stuff and undocumented

Slim Bean rom discussion

Wanted to start a thread in reference to the new slim bean Rom in original development section. As far as I can tell this thing is awesome. Have had zero issues since install. I came from triune II which is another great piece of work. I did a full wipe, using twrp recovery. I stacked the att zip, the common zip, and the nfc fix all in one. I have no echo on either end, no answer delay, and as of yet no screen tearing. Thing is a beast.
Would like to see if it is possible to raise the dpi just a bit without messing up the market if anyone feels like testing and would get back.
You will have two galleries and two cameras, i just deleted one gallery and the other camera went with it.
Edit..I was able to raise my dpi to 280 with no issues so far. Smaller than stock but not too small.
Looking for people to post there experiences and any other discussion about the Rom. The developer wishes for there to be no chatter in the thread, can do it here I guess.

Best rom out there that's not touch wiz imho. I've fallen inlove with it, on my inspire it was miui, but its not ready yet, the few things with this rom is no fb sync, and the torch not bar widget doesnt work, but the actual app does. But other then that best rom out there, stable fast everything works great, except my 6 day old warrente and phone insurance

Actually this rom is the best non-stock for the Galaxy gs3, I have been thru many roms and this one is the fastest, and the most stable. So stable it runs on my TMO GS3.

My guess is that although the ROM is mostly jelly bean, there are still some ICS components in it until fixes are worked out for those particular jelly bean components.
What specific features other than small size does slim offer that makes it stand out? What features over aokp? What bugs does slim have fixed over aokp? Other than HDMI out ?

I'm not sure there are any "additional features" over AOKP. At least not currently (that I have found). There are actually fewer customization options than you get with AOKP.
I've never had a SLIM ROM on any other phone, so don't know if they plan to add features in the future versions or not.

[FIX] Lag fix for cm10 based roms (cm10, paranoid android, jellybro)

I posted this in the other two forums and didn't wanna leave you sprint folks out.
I have a fix for the lagginess in builds from the past week and a half or so. The culprit is the surface flinger library. It is the android compositing system and some changes recently made to it are responsible for the significant lag in recent builds. Most noticeable spot is if you hit the home button if you have the notification drawer down. It becomes extremely laggy without this patch. Scrolling is also less smooth whenever multiple things on the screen are being drawn. This fixes all those issues.
Just flash this in cwm or whatever recovery you choose. Should work on all cm10 builds and cm10 based roms like paranoid android.

For any fellow LMT users: This also seems to have drastically decreased the lag you get with your pie buttons (more specifically, the back button). I think Paranoid fans will dig it. I do!

Is It Me

Or Has The Development For This Phone Seriously Slowed Down?
The S4 came out. Many are working on both devices or more, 5 or so Roms just got updated I wouldn't see that as slowing down very much. This is also the time a lot of people get the used device to Dev on so many may come to our community as well. If you get "bored" you can try to build yourself or use att Roms also, so long as they don't have their updater-script device specific.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I think the above is true. It's just not shiny enough anymore. I still love it though!
Another aspect, from a development point of view is: why? Why develop for the S3? It's already over-saturated with (mostly) TW and AOSP ROMs. And one ROM is pretty much the same as the next. What I'm trying to say is, nobody is going to reinvent the wheel, because there is nothing wrong with the one we're using. If I'm being honest, we already have a ridiculously large selection of ROMs to choose from. There's not really anything to update.
Well over in sprint forum we have cnexus working on the sense five rom...i dont think its slowing to much
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
There is always a slow down between major Android releases as well. We will see a huge uptick once 4.2-based TW ROMs launch and even more when key lime pie launches.

This!!! And further more like aerowinder stated, there isn't much more that can be done. Almost all AOSP Roms have the same issues and will continue to for the most part, they all use the same overall base for the most part, if one has more "features" it is more prone to breaks, same goes for TouchWiz Roms. The more stuff messed with and customized the larger the chance for breaks. I think the forum is bloated as is but thats not a problem as it gives options.

I completely agree with this, I find roms that are closest to stock, AOSP or Touchwiz, to be the ones that are the most pleasant to use.
Not trying to bash all the hard core rom cooks out there who packs in features into their roms, it is just my preference. You guys are doing an excellent job.
I know how much work it takes to develop a piece of software, especially when working by yourself or a tiny team. And for free.

I'm watching Ubuntu development and its not progressed any further on the kernel level than the last kernel I posted - it's in Development if you want to try out the OS but nothing works. I have to wait for Ubuntu to update the kernel source... They're still using 4.1.2 source code which is what they launched with. They need to work on the kernel before it's going to be any use.
First release isn't until October so I don't think they are going to do much kernel development right now and instead they're going to focus on app development

Yeah I about lost my mind trying to keep up with some of those comments haha.
It looks like its the I9300 for sure though, we haven't even had one test build for US variants and it makes sense, especially with all the features of the S4 that Samsung is porting over. Like it or not, they are always going to update Exynos devices before Qualcomm, especially when it comes to the S3 because of the relatively large disparity between the performance of the two versions.

The nightly builds are VERY stable now. At least the CM10.1 builds. The CM10.2 builds might still have a few glitches that are being worked out.
You may want to flash the updated Phone.apk that eliminates an occasional muted phone call. But other than that the CM nightlies are pretty much perfect. You can find that mod in the CM thread in the general section. Search for "phone.apk" and you shoudl find the post that has the download.
Go ahead and flash CM and try it for a few days and I'll bet you are happy with how stable it is. Just because it's not called a stable release doesn't mean it's not a stable build.
On that same note, the CM variants are all pretty solid too. Carbon, PA, etc...So whatever flavor is your favorite.
Enjoy!
Thanks... I'll give it a try...

When YOU stop? How does your use mean the rom is unstable? I have never had this issue and neither have most.
At least consider that the rom isn't the problem.
Also even if youtube didn't work at all it doesn't mean the rom isn't stable. It means there is a bug. Stable means it does shut off and reboot
and have tons of force closes.
That said, if CM isnt good enough for you...go use a different rom that is better suited to your needs. Or fix the youtube issue yourself. But don't complain about something you are getting for free

taking requests for new 4.4 roms

Well we already have a few real nice 4.4 roms out already but there are more out there. I have just released beanstalk and mahdi and have baked 4.4 and chaos 4.4 in the works. I am wondering if anyone knows/wants a few others. While I can not promise I will get it going but I will look it over and let you know if I will take a shot at it.
If possible provide a link to a version that is already done so I dont have to hunt for it and others will be able to see what it will be like.

Well I dont do much with bluetooth besides nfc/beam (sends via bluetooth) which does work with this build http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50904107. If you could try out the rest of the bluetooth features for me then I can work on an issues. Once I have it fixed on one rom then the fixes will be applied to all my builds.

Right now tw miui with gear support can not happen. Tw miui is 4.1.2 based and gear support is only in 4.3 and 4.4. So we have to wait for miui v6 which is 4.4 and tw 4.4 for our device to happen.

Hey ceabbott, gummy and slimkat both work with bluetooth, at least for phone calls. Google now, and speech to text, at least on the stock keyboard dont work. Hopefully its gets a fix soon as i used those features often. But i consider it a small sacrifice, slimkat has been great, dont think ill be going back to TW anytime soon.
