Better nav app? - Sprint LG Optimus G

i really dont like the stock navigation app because it gets my phone hotter than anything else, even more than when im in recovery. anyone using a different app that doesnt heat up so much? thanks!

Navfree is pretty awesome and doesn't require data. Pretty handy if you are out in the country with no service. It also was great in Mexico. Plus, it is free.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium

Yeah, Navfree is not bad. I use it a few times with my tablet just for fun. Although the address entry system is not great (think old school GPS, where you select the state, city, street name, then enter the street number). The fact that you store the map on your phone should help with temperature (phone not constantly downloading new map data).

Thanks for the reply's but I thought back to my old blackberry and got telenav. I like the interface and hopefully the heat issue dissipates
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium

I don't really see how you could get any better than the stock navigation app. As for your heat "issue", that is because while using navigation you have a constant GPS lock, constantly downloading new data, and your CPU is likely pegged pretty high trying to keep up with all the data. That's just how navigation works. Both of those things will increase the temp, happened on every smartphone I've had. Being charged while doing all that will increase the temp even more.
It could help some if you downloaded a map to your phone, by using the download for offline use feature. I have done that for a massive area around where I live and should never really have to download new data unless I decide to take a trip.

does aeroplane mode switch gps off if it does then probably lol
I think it is illegal, your phone is not allowed to sent or receive any signal during flight.
It is not illegal. Many pilots use GPS.
You are not allowed to use any radio TRANSMITTER while in flight. GPS is only a receiver, so no issues there. A radio receiver cannot in any reasonable way affect aircraft avionics. Most airlines insist you switch off ALL electronics devices when taking off or landing. During cruise, GPS is fine.
The issues you will find however is that civilian GPS maxes out at about 500kph, whereas a cruising airliner goes much faster than that.
Ive tested my desire, and GPS works in airplane mode.
Thanks all. I will try out my GPS on the plane

lol ive always wondered this...dont want a dam air marshall gunning me down for thinking im bringing down a plane or something lol
Do you think you will get a gps fix?
THe plane will be moving very fast... and as I know if it's moving to fast the cpu wont decode your position in time....
Well try it out and see. But I'm not sure if your phone is designed so that the gps would work at that altitude and velocity.

Which programme do you want to use to keep track of where you are? because you can't use google maps, since you don't have a data connection. And most navigation programmes only work with roads. Plus (don't know how your flight goes) but most don't have maps of oceans.
I tried my (desire)gps on the plane to Greece, reported about 900km/h and alt 11000m. Not that easy getting a fix though.

have used the app GPS status. showed 11000metres and 950kph. no problems.

mine showed over 950kph without issue. the limits according to the web are 60,000ft (18km) altitude and 515metres per second (1000knots) speed. anything outside these ranges and it stops displaying location data. so it will work fine on any civilian flight. by the way, the restriction is to stop gps guidance data being used on a missile if anyone was wondering.
I will use an app called GPS essentials from the market, unless anyone else knows a better app to use?

I used GPS on former phone (HTC Touch Pro) during flights. The fix is not a problem and everything worked fine. I used IGO8 to track speed and position and it was funny when it warned me that I exceeded the speed limit in towns (doing 780km/h instead of 50km/h ).
No one actually bothered me when I used it.
There's no reason why it should be illegal but airlines and flying in general has become very edgy. So it is usually specifically forbidden and as such you "could" get in real problems if you disregard that rule, I'm not saying you will but you gotta be careful. I've used gps in a plane too, you only get a fix right near a window but it works really well, it was spot on with speed, altitude and location there's no speed maximum that I know of on gps.
So be careful and when confronted immediately comply with the steward(ess) they don't know all devices and don't care for arguments.

I have used GPS on the planes in Europe for last 5 years, it makes the journey feel shorter as you can see the progress and also spot cities/mountain ranges in distance.
I found that in some aircrafts notably A320 it is nearly impossibled to get a fix while B737 are generally OK. I would put this down to shielding of the cabin rather than some disruptive technlogy used to protect the flight safety.
Same thing actually applies to trains, Google maps works really well there but there is absolutely a zero fix in some more recent ones.

Why is GPS so important

Ok so I see/read about all these leaks and blah blah and on every forum I go to people complain about gps I don't see the big deal I hardly use gps it doesn't seem to bother me what do u guys use gps so much for that when looking at a rom or phone gps has to be a priority just curious I guess yes I kno about traveling is that it or am I missing something

And I have to drive places I don't know very well

But I mean how off can ur gps be? Some people complain about meer feet I understand the traveling idea cause yea I use it to go to the other sides of town where I live but to choose whether or not ur gonna get a certain rom, phone, manufacture cause of gps problems I think its crazy..if that's the only reason some people are just picky I thought maybe gps dealt with somethin else that's why people cared about it so much?

Before I got my tab I used GPS quite often. It was a feature I bought the phone for and I wanted it to work. Surprisingly my Gtab has a great GPS.
My wife the real estate agent seems to think it's pretty important too.
I stopped bringing my gps places. I pay for the service, it should work.
guess that makes since I'm still not gonna not get a phone I've been excited about cause I hear it has gps issues that's just me maybe

The average person needs GPS for a lot of reasons. Some people actually use it rather than pretend they know where they are going, only to get lost, drive like an over cautious idiot causing accidents because they really dont know where they are going. I got my dad an Epic for the GPS because he's one of those people.
Gps is very useful for many reasons. Of course the obvious is getting around town.
But it also integrates with many apps that use your location. Such as yelp, or movie app, or facebook etc...
True, you could always manually enter your location, but one of the main selling points for me on a smartphone is to reduce the amount of things I need to do in my daily life.
Getting back to "getting around town". Instead of looking up directions and printing them out, and still possibly not know exactly where to go... I can hop in my car, pull up my calendar and literally touch phone twice to start navigating me to my destination.
Of course this won't apply to everyone, but I know it certainly helps me in my daily life.
Also just fyi, people aren't just containing about a few feet. A lot of roms have completely broken gps or gps that displays wrong location.

And I'll put it this way. Lets say you have a car with 4 doors and u dont have many people ride in the back. Don't you still want your 2 rear windows to work?

In many cases the GPS just locks up while driving somewhere. So it requires a reboot to get it going again...not cool at 70 MPH on the highway. The GPS on our phone takes the place of a Garmin or TOM TOM and is a very important feature for most of us when choosing a phone. For people that don't go anywhere unknown to them it is no big deal. I do AC work and go to 5-8 new places a day. Don't want to sit with a map trying to figure out where I am going.
Because when one lives in a major city, gps with real-time traffic reports is invaluable to have while trying to commute to and from work for example. Not a priority when you live in a small town and know all the roads and such.
Don't want to be like that one kid on the Verizon commercial who has a utility belt with 5-7 devices attached to it.
All-in-one is ideal.

Google maps have some of the worst routing IQs around and that is why it is free. You get what you pay for. TOMTOM has the best routing IQs and so is Garmen both of these program are not available for Android yet. But I heard TOMTOM is coming soon.

The main reason I care is the location aware stuff. Knowing where you are is incredibly useful. Plus it *is* my only GPS device.

Thsi is the main reason I use my GPS.
Traffic around here can be a massive issue, and knowing where to avoid, can change what could have been an all day parking experience, into a 20min trip, simply by not getting stuck behind an accident that has the highway closed, with no way to exit

You hit the nail on the head!
Well, most location services work just fine without knowing EXACTLY where you are.
Other than the obvious that we don't need a reason, it should work, it can work, so when a rom comes out where it doesn't, we should fix that. The thing I use my phone for least is phone calls. That doesn't mean I should shrug my shoulders and go "oh well, I don't use it much" when I find out my phone doesn't actually ring for half my phone calls. (Ah HTC Hero, how I miss thee)
"mere feet" is a big deal while driving, even if that were the major complaint, which it isn't. (Sometimes it makes no attempts to talk to sats, other time it sees 3 but never locks. Other times it locks fine, but loses GPS at some point, never to return)
Mere feet in a big city can mean it not even knowing what road you're on, telling you to turn right 2 seconds after you passed your turn, and then not being narrowed in enough to realize it needs to reroute, until often times that route is now also moot.

I have had the same problem and did the reboot thing to get my gps back also - but what I have found that works for me and is better and faster than a reboot, YMMV, is that I turn on airplane mode and than I turn it off and doing so it relocks/finds my gps again - faster than a reboot - and yes, I have done it while I was driving, but hey no worse than dialing a phone number.

First GPS Issue

So, for the most part, this phone has done a pretty good job with GPS locks so far. Besides the fact that my accuracy when using Goog Navigation is constantly fluctuating with the ominous blue circle around the car, I have been pleased. Today, though, google maps showed me several hundred miles north of my actual position. I toggled GPS, closed goog maps, and reopened...and same issue. I downloaded GPS toolbox, wiped a-gps cache, restarted goog maps, and the issue was resolved. Fast lock, correct location...however, this DOES give me some cause for concern. Anyone else seem anything similar?
Keep in mind, for the most part, I have been reasonably pleased with the locks. I have only seen this bad of an issue once
I haven't used it that much but on pleased as well. I use to use an apo called gps aids for my original epic. Sorry can't help more but I've only used gps once to make sure I got a lock. See if that apps helps u though.

Not to contradict but telnav basic software is free and does not need a monthly fee. The fee is only for the optional premium purchase which includes lane assist, red light cameras, speed traps, posted speed limits, and commute alerts. None of the premium features I need or want anyway, so the basic free software works for me.

I had an issue with my gps not wanting to get a lock all day a couple days ago. I downloaded gps test cleared agps and updated it, and still wouldn't work correctly. Then all of a sudden it did work, right before I was going to do a battery pull. I'm not sure what happened.
Today I was navigating somewhere by downtown chicago and my gps all of a sudden started acting goofy and kept rerouting me. I had to take a couple different turns because I was relying on it. I kept testing the gps on my way back home, and noticed that it was off by about one city block, but the big problem was my pointer was off 90 degrees, and that is what created my rerouting confusion. 2 hours later, it seems like its good again.
I'm concerned about this, because when I did need it such as today, it started spazzing out on me. Is there a way to calibrate the compass?
Oh and I cleared agps and updated it again with the gps test, and I think that's what fixed it.

Google Wallet... hit or miss

I really like the concept of Google wallet, and I try to use it whenever possible. but I've noticed that sometimes it works really good and sometimes its a real pain in the a**. for example, I use it to get gas at bp gas stations. the one closer to my house works great, first tap almost every time. but a couple other BP's I use it at on the way to work sometimes, its a nightmare. it takes 7-8 tries, and the terminal usually times out and I have to try it again... then it works (after holding up the line and making me look like an a** lol). and I've tested this with multiple roms, kernels, case on/off, starting wallet app before using, updating wallet app/going back to previous versions, etc. and nothing really makes a difference. anyone else have trouble with wallet, or better yet tips to make it work better? I've contemplated going back completely to stock unrooted just to see if that helps but if rather not, especially if its not going to help.

could be a bad connector/faulty reader... either way, the terminal still isnt setup properly.
I've had this problem a few times at McDonald's and have figured out that there is a little light on their card reader. If the light is burning it works, if light not working then nfc reader doesn't work right either. I think may be case with others as well.

As the other guy said. Its the terminal. I'm stock and jack in the box is hit or miss. 7-11 always works and McDonalds works 90% of the time. Employees have explained the terminal hasn't been updated when it doesn't work...
When I change the LCD density down to 220 I am not able to place more than 5 apps on my app launcher toolbar. There is room for 7 shortcuts.
What is the point in change the density if it does not allow me to place more shortcuts on my homescreen.
I use it any chance I get its extremely convenient and the only time it ever took more time than it would have to pull out my wallet was the day I updated the Wallet app and tried to initialize in a poor signal area (thanks, Sprint). Another time, their paypass terminal just didn't work at all, something on their end.
Google Wallet is an extreme hit in my book.

Stock T-Mobile S3 Starting to Run Bad

I'm about 3 months in and its already running terribly. Totally stock. I mean I can't be the only person that had these issues Haha. This is my 4th Android phone since the G1. I've rooted and tried tons of custom ROMs on all of them except this one so far. Every time whether its stock or a ROM I get to the couple week or couple month point (never more than 3 months) and boom... lag, freezing, reboots, more lag, more freezing.
Do I just suck at owning an Android phone? The only thing I can think of that I might be doing "wrong" is having lots of apps/games installed but what good is a smartphone if you can't have a lot of apps/games installed?
I have 3 active widgets. A live wallpaper but I've tried getting rid of it and things are no better. A 64gb SD card that's mostly empty. 1-2gb internal storage free at any given time (I try to go through and delete games I'm never gonna play at least once in a while).
Battery life is abysmal. Like i said tons of freezing. Sometimes getting from my home screen to the dialer can take like a solid 10 seconds. Chrome freezes up constantly where nothing will happen for like 10-15 seconds. And today I just started getting random reboots.
Any thoughts or suggestions. I'm gonna try that carbon app to backup my game save data soon so I can bother myself with a restore but its gonna be a real pain and I just really hope it makes a difference.
Thanks for your thoughts
Dave

Sounds like you got a lemon. I'd do a warranty exchange.
Probably this belongs in q&a unless you were just ranting

A lemon huh? Do phones start working amazing then work horrible if theyre lemons? I might really consider it. Since I'm in Vegas I might as well wait and see if I can get the upcoming LTE version.
I suppose it was mostly a rant. I can move it when I get home (out on the phone now).

I commiserate. I really do. But, with the 2 in my possession I've kept for a long time there just aren't issues like that.
The g1 was first smartphone, too.
If I recall buying a new battery and doing tune ups (new software/apps), clearing the cache, etc. helped back then. And probably would, now.

Since it's working fine for a time, I'm going to say it's a software issue. Do you have Lookout (the security app)? It's either a poorly coded app or a malicious one. Can we see some of those battery stats?
have you tried removing the games from your phone?
I don't have lookout. Should I check it out?
And like I said, removing my games kinda defeats the purpose of having this big awesome smartphone. Although I do delete games on a regular basis...

Did you update from ICS to JB without wiping? My wife's s3 (bone stock) had the same stuff going on after updating. It was all resolved with a factory reset.
It could also be other things.. Such as a rogue app eating up your ram.
Removing the games isn't supposed to be permanent. Just to help troubleshoot. Still haven't seen your battery stats. And yes, get Lookout, it's free.
Not sure which info you need to see regarding battery but heres a screenshot. Gonna check out lookout now. Also keep in mind leg/freezing is definitely more the issue than battery. Battery is terrible lately but I can live with that since I have chargers in every room, car, work, and one of those recharger packs haha

I think it's likely that the two are part of the same problem. Get Lookout and run a scan. Also, pick up the free version of GSam Battery Monitor and see if that can provide any clues.
If you aren't using Maps, disable it. Likes to eat battery when it shouldn't even be running. I use Titanium Backup to make an enable/disable widget for Maps and Google Play Music. GPS will work fine without Maps. Don't need it.
Also, do a battery pull. If the battery isn't seated properly, it can cause atrocious life. Didn't think that could happen... until I saw it happen.
So the main lookout app found no issues but the lookout ad detector found 4 collect location information and 11 collect network information apps. I'm gonna go through them tomorrow. Some from a quick look are big games I play daily which obviously I dont want to remove but I'm sure that some I can.

I do tend to use maps almost every day so not sure if I should disable it. Then again it does seem to run CONSTANTLY which i always found kinda ridiculous. Also I use play music every day but not the widget.
Had to do a battery pull earlier today when the device just shut off out of nowhere.
After looking at these ad network apps I'll check out that gsam battery monitor. Thanks for the suggestions so far everyone.

Idk you might be having too many apps and games lol idk.. Like others have said factory reset, also you may have a lot of apps that demand notifications that could greatly affect battery life such as Facebook etcc.

I agree. Might be a bad app. Save your data and do a factory reset like it was mentioned. Should clear issues right up. If not then take the next step and exchange it if possible.

Besides the apps and games do you get a lot of pic messages and text from many people? Did you leave the auto delete after so many pic messages and text on or did you turn it off?

No such issues on my phone, and a cheap $25-$30 hyperion battery will solve your battery woes.

Quick update. Woke up this morning and my phone was just off. Turned it back on, went to the bathroom, came back, it was off again. Got it back on and its running slow as hell but its on at least. This shutting off / rebooting stuff is new this week. Its terrible.
I guess im gonna try out carbon to back up my game data and see what I can do. It just really sucks if it turns out the issue is that a 16gb smart phone can't really store a lot of games. What a waste. Might as well carry an iPod touch and a flip phone Haha.
BTW I do get tons of text but I try to go in and clear those out every so often too. I never let my internal storage get below 1gb, 2 if I can help it.
