If my phone got bricked, couldn't I just roll over the phone with my car and make a warranty claim?

I think it does. They can easily "unbrick" our phones, then see what we did.

Try to be smart
If your flash counter says anything other than no you cannot get a warranty claim. To check it go into download mode and click volume up. Then see if your flash counter says anything other no. If it does than buy triangle away from the play store (by chainfire) and use it. Than you can claim warranty.

Was that what your question was originally this morning? Obviously, they can't do anything. If you send in a bricked phone, without being crushed, different story.

This. Now if if was destroyed and you had the insurance on it you could pay the $130, actually I think it's $175 now, and get a refurb. Otherwise you send in a smashed phone for warranty replacement they will laugh at you.

If you have insurance yes. If you don't have insurance and phone is 100% hard bricked, you can always send it to samsung. Now if you want to file a warranty claim (thru t-mobile) you will need to revert to stock unmodified and a flash counter of 0. With an insurance claim, asurion will not care if you have a modified device with 100+ flash counter, as long as something physical is damaged.
My old Sidekick;s motherboard got fried and it had a custom ROM on it. I called T-mobile and they replaced it gotta love the free 1year warranty

Does anyone know the official root policy at At&t? I waited about 3 months to root my Galaxy S but I want to root and flash mine now without worrying about the warranty in case I screw it up.
Root voids warranty... Just flash back to stock for warranty purposes you can get the odin tar at wwww. Samsung- updates. Com

It should, but I don't think it matters.
The way I understand it goes as follows: The terms of your warranty are set by Samsung. When you bring a phone to your AT&T store to have it replaced under warranty, AT&T is simply taking that phone and returning it to Samsung for you. The Samsung warranty clearly states that rooting your phone violates your warranty.
Despite that, when I called the support number and asked several people at AT&T, all of them assured me that rooting does not void my warranty. I even made one of the people I spoke with email it to me in writing, for what it's worth. I ended up deciding that it shouldn't really matter though because:
1. It is really easy to root without tripping the counter, and
2. If you go into the store to use your warranty, do you really think the person there will know what the binary counter is, no less how to check it? And if Samsung ends up saying that your phone's warranty was voided, AT&T takes the loss, not you.

You can unroot/reset the flash counter so why risk submitting a phone that is rooted?
Just unroot and return it to stock first to avoid any hassle - even if some AT&T reps tell you it's ok they are not the decision makers and are OFTEN wrong/mis-informed.

What if your phone has been rooted, and the phone will not power on at all. Will I still be able to return and be covered under warranty?
Will AT&T be able to tell that the device has been rooted if it won't power on at all? (I flashed a rom for the 19300 accidentally)

Luckily I am still under the Manufacturer's Warranty, and they replaced it with no problem. Although they did ask me if my device was rooted. I just told them "No" and crossed my fingers.
UItimately they replaced the phone. Thank you for you quick response.
With any luck they'll just go straight to re-imaging it and overwrite everything without bothering to look too closely at it. Then it would be sold or made a warranty replacement as a refurb and everything will work out. I'm sure this isn't the first time someone has brought them a brick and hopefully they're not bothered enough by it to look very closely at what happened to it.
However, I would take a closer look at what ROM you're flashing on which flavor of SGS 3 this time around. Bring in more than one brick and even the slowest sales person might get to wondering!
If you get lucky and the AT&T employee is a good person and your phone is having a hardware issue that could never be caused by root, they sometimes don't care about your phone being rooted. It has happened toa friend of mine.

If I'm not mistaken, you can't take a broken phone into the warranty center. I tried to take a friends in and the manger said it had physical damage. They'll replace anything that had to do with hardware problems. Phone not turning on, connector problems, etc. But you can try and c what happens! So if you have insurance you'll probably have to go about it that route. :banghead:

yeah, that isn't warranty so I don't know why you would waste time taking it there. It is damaged and a damage claim doesn't care if you are rooted, or Rom flashed or whatever. You will be purchasing a new phone or paying an insurance deductible.
Is there a new program that just replaces the screen for cheaper than the deductible on insurance?
I had a unfortunate mishap with the note 2 lat night. It is rommed but i cant take it back to stock now because it wont even turn on. do i call tmo and tell them i lost it, or i dropped it and get one coming in the mail? or when i send it back is it SOP for tmo to fix it and wipe it and then reflash from the fctory or will i get a huge bill when they find out it was rommed?
any input from anyone who knows first hand would be awesome. cant rock my old sensation for to long now.
Do you really need the opinion of "XDA" to tell what to do, in a situation like this?
It you dropped your phone and it won't turn on, just leave it on the shelf. You said you had another phone. Okay that's a wrap. Have a nice day.
I'm lost. Tmo will fix the glass for you. I'm sure you will have to pay either way because that's not a warranty item. If you're asking if you should commit fraud by claiming it's lost, then no. You broke it pay the price. If you're doing that I'm assuming you have insurance so then no need to lie anyways because insurance should cover glass.

If you dont have any first hand experience with sending a rooted phone in then why would you reply that? anyways, I do have another hone but im not using my sensation for any longer then i have to.
You dropped your phone. Glass is shattered. Phone won't turn on. Sounds like a good reason to to turn into turn it in, regardless if it has root or not.
I crashed my car, while driving in the rain. Should I sent it out to get it fixed? It's been modified. What do I do?

The guy has Insurance.. He is not Trying to get it fixed for free. He paid his insurance to pay for accidental drops.. Just like your car you crashed. If you had insurance you have a RIGHT to file a claim..
As far as samsung and carrier voiding warranty for it being rooted Yes they can. But i would think insurance for a ACCIDENT Repair that is clearly not the Fault of the phone being rooted. I Would think they will fix it. I know for a Fact a warranty like square Trade will fix it..
Wish i could tell you for sure But i have never warrantied to a carrier only to insurance company and only once. It was a Nexus 7 tablet ..
Good Luck..
One more thing.. No matter the outcome DO NOT LIE .Do not say you lost it.. That is very unfair.and is partly what drives prices up on insurance..

I've seen plenty of people and rooted phones in and they say there was no problem. I've also seen a couple claim they were charged for the phone. Are you sure it won't turn on? The consensus had been that damage is damage in regards to insurance. The software status hasn't mattered in the past (unless CM10 suddenly makes you toss phones out of the car on the freeway).
You are not eligible for a warranty replacement as there is glass breakage. You have insurance, use it for the legitimate claim you have a right to make. This is an obvious replacement for the insurance guys.
In any case, as said before, don't lie.

Just to update everyone, I called tmo and they shot me over to asurion. they were really cool on the phone about this whole thing. she never asked anything about the software side of it.So i asked her about it just to know because i am not one to try to commit fraud an i appologize for giving that impression in the OP. She said that would not be an issue. Super good service thru Asurion with a long survey at the end.
I do appologize for a few of my replies yesterday. I guess the comment on rooting voiding the warranty thru people off but i was just stating that, not meaning i was gonna send it in for warranty replacement. Thanks again for giving your thoughts on this matter.
Glass shattered has nothing to do with what OS your phone runs. You have a hardware issue, not software.
Trying to get warranty work done because you bricked your device cuz you flashed a wrong rom, that would be an issue because your warranty covers you being on a stock device that should otherwise be working up to their standards they gave u warranty for.

I just drop my phone and I called tmobile. So they going to send me a new phone because the phone works fine but the screen inside is black in some areas. The phone is rooted and there is a custom recovery. I was planning to unrooted but the black eventually completely blacked out. So im wondering if they will find out its rooted and charge me for the new pbone that is exchanged to me? the phone still operates normally but the screen is blacked out almost 98% of the screen. so i can still flash via Odin and bring back to stock and official recovery and reset counter?

Just an FYI, the black part of the screen thats getting worse is the screen being cracked and damaged and bleeding out.
The heading of this thread is Warranty Exchange, So just a heads up, if someone in the store sees its a broken screen and sees any scuffs on it they will deny your warranty claim. Theres also a good chance the people in the store wont notice but once it gets back to TMO or Samsung they might reject the "warranty" as its physical damage and considered customer abuse. Just a heads up. Not sure if you knew that or not.
Warranty covers defects of manufacturing and some software problems.
Dropping your phone and breaking the screen is not a warranty issue.
When t mobile figures out that the amoleds broken there going to charge you. When you call that's one of the first few things they ask..... water indicators, imei & physical damage. (Screen)...

Oh grasshopper, you are early in the warranty process. The reason they are doing the exchange is because you didn't tell them the problem started when you dropped the phone. Don't be surprised if you get a bill after a few weeks when they actually work on your phone. Damage is damage whether you can see it externally or not.
Oh, and why the $12 a month extra? Because of situations like the one you are in right now.

So lets help the original poster by also clearing up a few things.
Warranty is for when a device fails due to manufacturer defect. NOT related at all to what you have.
To address the issue of you paying 12 bucks a month. Thats called Insurance. NOT Warranty.
What will happen is you need to file a claim with the carrier and / or insurance company, more then likely its Asurion.
You will then pay a deductible, as another person has metntioned its in the 150-200 range. They will send you a replacement device, most likely refurbished, and you send in the broken. Then your done.
To address the screen touch still working, you did not damage the glass or the touch sensor part which is built into the glass. You broke the LCD when you dropped it.
The LCD has nothing to do with touch sensing, the LCD is only a display. Again, if you failed to tell them that you dropped the device then they will think its a warranty issue and the display stopped working. But the display didnt stop working, it got broken when you dropped it.
So if they have approved a warranty claim, eventually someone will see its broken and deny the claim and send it back or you will see a huge charge on your account to have it fixed or replaced.
Im trying to help educate you and others so you can make better decisions in the future as educated consumers. When you signed a contract for the phone and paid for insurance you should have asked many questions including how these things work. If not thats what were here for, to help.

That is the insurance with warranty & security prem pkg. With screen damaged you go through the insurance services. Not the warranty part. Going at this the wrong way will cost you more than going at this the correct way.
PHP Ins. ($7.79), MSec & Wrty ($4.20) Prem Dev by Asurion = $11.99

Long story short, I sent my S4 to samsung for repairs. Before sending it in I used Triangle away and restored it back to stock, not sure why they say its rooted. I kept on tracking the service only and thought warranty was good because it kept updating saying the bad components where being replaced, while this was going on I was never contacted and told that the device was out of warranty. I go and check today and last message says "(WOI) [PRICE HOLD] Device is OOW by Condition, PBA needs to be changed, device is Rooted, payment is needed.". I have declined to pay the price through their online service tracking system. Has anybody been through this? What can I expect?

Did you take the 4.3 or 4.4 OTA which included the Knox bootloader? Sounds that way to me.

I did take the 4.4 OTA, but can my warranty be denied even if they cannot prove the damaged was caused by rooting?

Yes. You broke a condition of the user agreement.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
This thread is exactly why I've never taken an OTA with this device. That Knox crap is a great move for Samsung, but bull for people like us that enjoy root. Some think it's silly to worry about Knox, but you've learned how not silly it is the hard way.
Anyway, I hope you get everything straightened out without having to basically rebuy your phone to get it back.

Good effort using Triangle Away to hide the fact that you rooted your device; too bad though that the KNOX flag was 0x1. There is no way to reset that particular flag and that is how they caught it; not the counter that Triangle Away resets.
I'm not going to come right out and say it.......but I have Knox......and IF for some reason I had to do a exchange or whatever.....lets just say the power button was sticking.....
When I send it off.....believe me they wouldnt be able to see if Knox was there or not.

Yeah, I'm also pretty well lost as to what you meant there, Sickness... unless you mean like... destroying the phone or something. :\

Why did you send it to Samsung? If any they would be the ones that would probably check.. T-Mobile would've just sent you a replacement

I do not carry insurance through T-mobile, I didn't even know the phone was under warranty until I contacted Samsung.

I have exchanged phones with T-Mobile that was close to a year old. They honor manufacturer warranty.

Even if you exchange your phone through T-Mobile, they will send it back to Samsung. If Samsung finds the KNOX Flag set, T-Mobile will be sending you the bill for the price of the phone. I know, because I bricked my first phone, and the first thing that the T-Mobile guy checked was the Custom ROM and KNOX flags before processing the Warranty claim.

If your phone was truely bricked, it wont power up. So how can he see anything. A bricked phone will not show nothing but a black screen. Been there, done that.

He was probably one of us that knows about Knox and ROMs and wanted to be douchy. Any other probably won't know, I've sent back 2 modified devices and never got charged

Looks like I am going to take my chances.
I've exchanged once already because of my camera. Took less than a week to get a new one in the mail from T-Mobile. I just flashed a stock rom. They don't check.
