Just rooted my S3. It has stock Jelly Bean installed.
Only reason I rooted is because every now and then I have need to tether.
In the past, on other phones, I've used the Wifi Tether for Root Users app and loved it. However, when I run the app, non of my PCs see the network at all. The phone looks like it's working but the laptops don't see any network.
I saw a bunch of people post about the similar thing on their google code page.
Is there a fix for this or a different program I need to use? Any help would be great.
Thanks!

Hello Forum,
Previous S2, HTC Amaze owner. Not a noob but not a developer for sure!
New S3 is rooted and am running CM10 with Lean Kernel. Everything is great. A few FC but the recent ones
are with the modded tether app I installed from an apk I downloaded.
The only ways to enable wifi tether I have seen here in these forums are this app or the 3-4 step process I am not comfortable with
in the Tether Data Cap Removal topic.
Do we not have a simple way to enable wifi tether via rooted phone?
I have used the search function up until it was unavailable here this morning.
Thank you
Yeah I don't think there is a simpler way or not that I know of.. There is ROMs that have the mod cooked already so if you're not comfortable in doing it like you say, so all you have to do is look for them

you might want to use one of the modified ROMs such as Jedi Mind Trick JB 1.1 or Infamous's . I dont think free tethering in stock ROM will work.

I tried the generic steps for tethering but I do not have the MSS Clamping option on the one that I downloaded on that page?

The stock roms generally want permission from the carrier to enable tethering. The custom ROMS generally have it enabled by default. One of the tricksy things T-Mobile is doing now though is checking the User-Agent of the browser requesting a page and, if it's not a mobile browser (i.e. you're wi-fi tethering a laptop and using a desktop browser), it redirect you to the "Buy Tethering" page. There are extension for Chrome and Firefox to change your User-Agent.
Non-web traffic seems to be completely unaffected by the new tethering test.
Hey guys! As the title says, I updated my phone from ICS to Jelly Bean, re-rooted it, and now I can't use WiFi Tether. I changed the device profile to "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0) when I first got the app on ICS in order for it to work, and it doesn't work on that setting now. I've tried many other settings, and none of them work either. It says that tethering has started, the log doesn't show any errors, but when I try to connect with various devices, they just won't connect to it. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance!
I remember reading that tethering does not work on jb ROMs. Im pretty sure there is a jb ROM that does claim it works, just to lazy to find you a link
can it USB tether?

Look for the WiFi Tether-TrevE Mod.
I couldn't get tethering to work on Touchwiz JB even with TrevE mod, which is a shame because my phone is unlocked and on a carrier that does support tethering, yet it's still being blocked by Tmobile. Grr. Anyways, that's part of the reason I switched to AOKP. I highly recommend it.
WiFi Tether-TrevE Mod works for me on a stock JB rooted SGS2.
Haven't tried the Treve mod one yet, I'll give that a try and I'll post results, thanks!
Edit: So with that app, none of my devices see the network (my pc, my other phone, and my PS Vita).
I haven't tried USB tethering with it, because the only reason I tether with it is to play my Vita online when I'm not at home, so I have no use for USB tethering
Just use Jedi ROM Tricks wifi theter works in the rom

I'm not a big custom rom fan, but after checking the page out for that one, I like what I see and I think I'll be attempting that tomorrow. Thanks for the tip =]
wifi tether works on aosp based roms prior to 4-22
Hi,
New here. Just rooted Koodo T989D and applied latest Jedi Mind Trick. I'm having issues with using the mobile hotspot with my Win 7 laptop. My laptop connects to the wireless hotspot on my phone, and my phone is getting 4G connectivity with no issues, but I can't access the internet with the laptop (i.e. there's some disconnect between the hotspot and 4G). I wasn't having any issues with stock rom.
I have tried:
Flashing both the Telus/Koodo and the T-Mobile 4.1.2 MC6 radio
Disabling WiFi Calling, WiFi Direct, and WiFi Direct Share
Using FoxFi instead of the T-Mobile hotspot app
Nothing has worked. Only thing I haven't tried is removing the T-Mobile hotspot app, which I can't find to remove.
Any other suggestions?
Tmobile-based roms block tethering. Try this:

Thanks... that worked. I had seen that info before, but for some reason I didn't think it would apply to me on Koodo/Telus in Canada since I've never even heard of tether blocking. But, I guess, as you said, JMT is T-Mobile based.
Thanks again!
No problem. Nice to see some fellow Canadians on here

I rooted my GS3 this morning and verified it is rooted with a root verifier. I'm on android version 4.1.2 with a Sprint GS3. I've tried a few different hotspot apps, foxfi, wifi tether, wireless tether, and a few others, and none work. Wifi Tether says it starts with errors, but when I go to view the error log, it doesn't exist. I never see the SID on my other devices either. I don't even have the option in my stock rom to go try to turn wifi tether on, just usb and bluetooth. Any suggestions? I just want to be able to tether to my Nexus 10, but am pretty stumped. I don't want to flash a custom rom, just keep the stock rooted one and be able to tether.
Was able to get it working with a newer version of wifi tether, 3.3 beta 2 synergized, and had to tell it to use the galaxy S4 profile. The gs3 profile would not work but the GS4 one does and allows me to tether with it.
Why not just use the modded sprint hot spot app since your rooted. Works best.
