Hello Forum,
Previous S2, HTC Amaze owner. Not a noob but not a developer for sure!
New S3 is rooted and am running CM10 with Lean Kernel. Everything is great. A few FC but the recent ones
are with the modded tether app I installed from an apk I downloaded.
The only ways to enable wifi tether I have seen here in these forums are this app or the 3-4 step process I am not comfortable with
in the Tether Data Cap Removal topic.
Do we not have a simple way to enable wifi tether via rooted phone?
I have used the search function up until it was unavailable here this morning.
Thank you
Yeah I don't think there is a simpler way or not that I know of.. There is ROMs that have the mod cooked already so if you're not comfortable in doing it like you say, so all you have to do is look for them

I have a Sprint EVO that I want to be able to tether to my Samsung Tablet. My question is, can I "just" root the phone and use an app from the market to tether?
I am not interested at this time downloading and using new ROMS, as I do not have the time right now to experiment with different ROMS.
I just want to keep my current stock ROM, but be able to tether.
Also, Does any one have experience with unrevoked and other similar programs to root? Again, I am going for ease and time!
Thanks~! All suggestions, comments, and ideas welcome!!

You can just root the phone. Also the root method you use will be determined by your firmware and android version. If your on 2.2 unrevoked is your option to root. If your on 2.3 revolutionary.io is your root method. If your 2.3.5 HTCdev.com is your root method

There was an APP called opengarden that you could do wifi tether, but I don't see it in the market anymore, and that could be that it doesn't work with GB I don't think.
All rooting methods are ez to do. Use an app called "wireless tether 2.0.7" which can be found on google.

Wireless tether for root users is the easiest and is a free app. It's no longer available in the market, you can download it at http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Good luck!
Same thing i just said -_-

Wireless tether is still there, it's just that all the carriers block it from showing up (silly carriers). If you can find a device it'll install on, you should be able to pull the apk and install it on the other one.
You can google it and dl the apk ftom phone browser and install. Have to have unknown sources box checked.

I haven't found any evidence that this has been done yet, so I was wondering if someone would be able to either tell us how to hack the stock Sprint Hotspot app or upload a pre-hacked app for us to download.
I'm willing to try ideas out to see if they work, so let me know if you have suggestions!
The hotspot app is built into the framework. So it would take some editing. Are doubting to use kies?
Use wireless tether for root, it's in the market.

Wireless tether may or may not work from the market, wouldn't work for me. If it doesn't try this link: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta14.apk This 1 worked for me the 1st time. ROOT is required of course.
Q. How do I use the WiFi Tether app?
Download from the store or see above link....
1. Open the Wifi Tether App
2. Press Menu
3. Press Settings
4. Choose "Change Device-Profile"
5. Choose "Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)"
6. Press Back twice to return to initial app screen
7. Press the big ole WiFi Signal icon
8. Allow Superuser Permissions
Profit! :highfive::highfive::highfive:
I should have clarified in the first post, but I was hoping to get the stock app hacked to work for tethering (wired and wireless). I'm familiar with WiFi Tether and I'm sure I could get that working (thankfully!), but I prefer the stock app. From my experience with the stock app on the Evo 3D, One S, and Evo 4G LTE, it's a lot faster and more reliable than third-party apps.
I'm not even sure what kies is yet, so I'm not using it, no. I think it's some sort of data/calendar sync service.

Htc handles the 3rd party apps a little differently than Samsung. For instance Foxfi which did not need root at all would not work properly with HTC phones unless rooted. I know you may want to use the stock one but at the end of the day you still pressing a button and I have been using wifi tether and it works flawlessly and actually to me was faster than stock. I have owned and Evo Evo3D, Epic Touch Galaxy S2(Tmobile) Galaxy S3(Sprint). Must say that wireless tether app has held me down on more than one occasion.
Don't hurt to request it though but I am quite sure whether you asked or not someone is and has been working on it.

I always thought it was the same 1 from the market until I installed it and it wouldn't for the life of me allow SU. I uninstalled it, installed the one from Google code and it worked perfectly the 1st time.
With wireless tether change profile to galaxy nexus gsm not cdma and you must use access control.
Have you tried the following:

If your phone is rooted, you can try the following: (it works for me on my rooted stock rom)

If non-rooted, you can try the following (never tried it myself):

unfortunately CM10 is the only one that actually got the native hotspot app to work. every other rom requires third party wifi apps..

Galaxy S3 wasnt on the profile list back then. So you had to use Nexus cdma/lte

Question??
So... we don't have a stock hotspot hack yet except for CM10??
If you are running stock rooted this is worth giving a shot. Its a nandroid of a stock cspire rom. Same ROM with the exception of a few sprint apps missing. Fully functional stock tether if your on sprint http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32460393&postcount=21 think it runs better too. Just throwin it out there
Will this work with the Sprint Galaxy SPH-L710? Can it just be flashed over the existing ROM?
Im not to lazy to search. I have and havent had good luck.
I have used a couple of different custom roms without luck of having a hacked native wifi tether option. From what I have read 3rd party tether programs dont work with jellybean.
Can anyone point me to a thread that will shed some light on what Im doing wrong?
Im not a noob to android or rooting, flashing, etc just need some general guidance to help me out.

I can't guarantee but check out aokp jb rom. There's may be working but the jb builds are relatively new. Go to www.aokp.co.

Well i just came from the s2 and I'm not sure if the problems and fixes are the same but on a custom Rom, have you tried using the native tether and changing user agents or a different browser like Firefox.
Wifi tether for root users beta 3.2 works fine too.
Btw i was tethering last night using native. No problems so far.
I'm on aokp jb

Wifi tethering wont work on jb touchwiz roms. If you upgraded to the unlimited 4g you lose hotspot with stock jb roms. It may work with aokp or cm roms.
I had the same issue and downgraded back to an ICS rom so the wifi tethering app will work again
Sent from my fingertips
Thanks for the input. I like touchwiz reminds me of htc sense a lot.
I will just stay on ics now instead of taking any leaked updates.
Is there a way to hack the native hotspot on the leaked jb tw roms to bypass the data plan check? I know when I was on sprint that hacking the native tether app was done with several roms.
I don't tether for everyday use at home but it is nice to have when in the car for my wife and kids who have tablets or other internet devices.
I would get a tether plan but I use to much data to do that and would incur extra charges.

If your run is a Touchwiz jelly bean Tim then that version of WiFi tether will not work. You need the version modified be trevE.

yes trevE mod is the way to go after rooting w/ bin4ry or cubebycube through the command promp(right click on cmd run as administrator)
Note
Don ’ t try to open the procdefs.ld from Windows Explorer or using the default Windows
Notepad application; it won ’ t look pretty. This file was generated in a Unix environment and
does not contain the standard end-of-line sequence used by Windows programs. Instead use the
MPLAB Editor as I suggested.
But if your updated firmware version on your android hinders your speed like my friends s2 used to fly using pda.net now he just got a s3 and pda.net is slow so yeah buy a really spiffy usb sync cable and root the crap w/ trevE mod i guess and try opening some files plugging in text and crap don't know how familiar one is about sorting through files most importantly understanding how super classes or inherit classes are called by the main files, i'll have to scan through versions of trevE real quick
Just rooted my S3. It has stock Jelly Bean installed.
Only reason I rooted is because every now and then I have need to tether.
In the past, on other phones, I've used the Wifi Tether for Root Users app and loved it. However, when I run the app, non of my PCs see the network at all. The phone looks like it's working but the laptops don't see any network.
I saw a bunch of people post about the similar thing on their google code page.
Is there a fix for this or a different program I need to use? Any help would be great.
Thanks!
