[Q] Samsung Galaxy s3 SPRINT TETHERING - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi ,
I'm really new to this forum and I'm having trouble with tethering application. I followed qking77 on youtube for the directions. I currently have blazer phantom rom on my Samsung galaxy s3 device. I installed Tethering on ANdroid app and changed my device profile jus like other recommended. However, after turning on the tethering signal in my phone, I still couldn't see my device shows up on other computer when searching for wifi connections. Did anyone experience this beside me? tell me i'm not alone... I need help..if anyone could help me out, i would really appreciate it!

If your run is a Touchwiz jelly bean Tim then that version of WiFi tether will not work. You need the version modified be trevE.

yes trevE mod is the way to go after rooting w/ bin4ry or cubebycube through the command promp(right click on cmd run as administrator)
Note
Don ’ t try to open the procdefs.ld from Windows Explorer or using the default Windows
Notepad application; it won ’ t look pretty. This file was generated in a Unix environment and
does not contain the standard end-of-line sequence used by Windows programs. Instead use the
MPLAB Editor as I suggested.
But if your updated firmware version on your android hinders your speed like my friends s2 used to fly using pda.net now he just got a s3 and pda.net is slow so yeah buy a really spiffy usb sync cable and root the crap w/ trevE mod i guess and try opening some files plugging in text and crap don't know how familiar one is about sorting through files most importantly understanding how super classes or inherit classes are called by the main files, i'll have to scan through versions of trevE real quick

Sprint WiFi Hotspot apk -Froyo

I am looking for a way to disable authentication? This is easily done on an Evo... See this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838644
Calkulin has a hack for the Evo to disable it, anyone port this to the Epic?
Also maybe if someone could port the disable usb debugging icon even when enabled too?
If you are rooted and install one of the latest froyo roms like quantum 1.3 or 1.4
its built in and working.

OR you can cancel your sprint wifi hotpot ($30/month savings) and just use wireless tether, which is free. Just sayin...

This is why I want the Sprint one and just disable the authntication as they have already done with the evo, downside is they have not got 4g to wifi working as 4g uses mac adress for authentication possibly.
I already have WiFi tether app that works with 3g and 4g but the mode is ad-hoc and certain things like xbox, ps3, psp need infrastructure mode. I would be happy if we could get as far as Evo and get and have working infrastructure 3g without authentication restriction.

do you pay for it? can you confirm it was sprint hotspot and not wifi tether
yeah i've been on quantum since 1.0, on 2.7 now and i dont think it works. it activates, lets you connect and "looks" like you have internet but activating the hotspot deactivates 3g for some reason. gives you the registration error.
that being said, i downloaded caulkins mod and will look into seeing if i can replicate it on the epic. i'm guessing i'll hit a roadblock as i'm sure people have tried this already, but we'll see!
looks like Caulkin is who made that MOD for the evo, i asked him on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10382458#post10382458 if he could provide a how to as the same hack might work for us.
right now i'm just comparing a stock framework.jar with his mod. first delta i found is classes.dex/android/content/pm/registeredservicescache.smali but i dont know if that means anything yet, we'll see.
will this hack work on the shift also>>??

Agreed, the newest wifi tether actually launches sprint AP with authentication disabled. I've read that its a little buggy, but I used it yesterday for about 10 min browsing the web with no issue.
Using the newest tether (v3) has actually reset my phone, IE erased the data/factory reset. Kinda annoying.
How? No one ever gives instructions.
Is there a way to get a free hotspot or wifi tether on an UNROOTED Epic?
Thanks,
Sam

For free? The short answer is no. You can download the ap apps like wireless tether from the market, but without root permissions, the apps will not work. Some reason your hesitant to root your phone?
Requires a rooted phone.
Backup your phone with CWM3 as this app is still experimental and can cause issues.
Download pre10 or pre12 version 3.
Correctly install with ADB or a file/app manager.
Shutoff 4g and open app.
Select your device profile as Epic 4G
Start app and verify it successfully started (no errors, binaries installed etc.)
Don't worry when you see Sprint Hotspot activated message as this app uses something from the Sprint app
Start 4G
Supports infrastructure mode

Wifi tether doesn't work with jelly bean.

Anyone having problems with wifi tether? I am on mrom 1.3 and jelly bean 4.1.1 and I cannot get it to work. No devices find it. Anyone have this problem?

i had no problem for the 2+ years i was tethering and using it as my home internet. then one day a few months ago, i got the same message from tmobile. point is, it only takes one time. it has nothing to do with jelly bean or ics, or gingerbread. now i pay $15 a month to tether and use it as my home internet.
Alright, thanks. I hope that is not the case.
Does anyone else have any other experience after switching to jelly bean? Anyone replicate this problem or have an app that works?

Also, I have tried wireless tethering, which is based on same open source software.
It says it started tethering with errors and to check the log, which then says that the log doesn't exist and it can't open it. Same error with opengarden tethering.

my epic 4G has a wifi tether app ( the yallow one ) anyway when i use it to connect my Google Nexus 7" tablet before i update to 4.1.1 it works but after i updated to the latest jelly bean my nexus wont even find the signal anymore,
BTW i tried SVTP WiFi Hotspot and USB Tether - Lite it works but is it safe or does the carrier detect that , thanks
I am on Verizon, and I had a lot of issues when I first moved to jb on 4.1. Originally I used wireless tether app, as I used it on every other version I had. It would not work. I even tried using barnacle from the party site, and same thing.
I finally switched to 4.1.1, and just used the built in tether, and it has been working fine for about 3 weeks now. I never got a message about being to call tech support, but then again this is Verizon and I am not sure who your provider is.
It might be like someone said above about them knowing you are using it, and you need to call to set it up. If that is the case, that sucks.

Yup seems like jb broke the app, I can tether with the native app but on Sprint that knocks you off wimax and only leaves you with 3g. I can confirm its a jb thing because its working fine on my wife's evo that is still on 2.3 also worked fine on ICS. Like others it seems to start up fine but my tabblet won't pick it up.
something clever goes here...
After alot of hit and misses I finally got internet access using pdanet, foxfi, and enabling bluetooth network access. It's not the best but it was wiresless and free.

Wi-Fi tether on 4.2.1?

I have tried a number of 4.2.1 ROMS and still have yet to find one that will let me tether my laptop. I have tried the native wifi tether...and the tethering app... It used to have no issues working with my laptop on 4.1...but since I jumped to 4.2 I can't seem to get anything going here.... Is there a working wifi tether or am I SOL...

Im currently using this ROM and native wifi tether works perfectly fine. I should add that I'm on R6, 4.2( R8 is the current one which is 4.2.1) as I've had no need to update it.
Ok..as soon as I can find a R6 ROM I will give that a shot and see what gives... My laptop connects but it says "limited connectivity" ... basically no internet...
Would the kernel make a difference? If I ran a 4.2 kernel?
Works with the Paranoid Android ROM and Franco Kernel as well.
Damn...PA is a R8 release? What the hell is wrong with mine then..LOL

That's true, however for whatever reason this function was not fully functional in quite a few of the ROM's i've used in the past.

I'm using rasbean and with trinity kernel. And I can't get it to work either. Using wifi tether it gives me errors and won't show the created network. It has errors in the log creating "ap". If I try to use the builtin app it creates an "ap" and allows me to connect, but it won't actually let me to browse the Internet. This is over two rasbean roms and the stock kernel and trinity kernel. I've tried changing the device to the gsm version and I have also tried using different apps. Open garden, barnacle, etc. So I do know what else to do.
Thanks ...

I would first try flashing it clean. Wipe System/Data and Factory reset. Then before installing anything test the Native tether to see if it works. I suggest using Cyanogenmod because many ROMs are built off of it, but that is your choice. I also suggest you try connecting another device to the AP to make sure the problem is not your actual laptop. Try tethering a tablet or another phone and see if it works.

Reboot the phone and use the default, built-in tether (Settings -> More -> Tethering & portable hotspot). You might want to give it a few seconds/1 minute for devices to properly connect. The app WiFi Tether for Root Users does not play well with 4.2.2.

I'm assuming that once the stock wifi tether is engaged, you switch to the WIFI Tether for Root users. I mean, what would be the point of using it if Tmo is gonna charge us for it. And when I start the stock tether, tmo takes over my browser and tells me I need to upgrade my plan to one that has wifi tethering. So i'm not following you. There is a way to spoof the browsers to use android browser, but by doing so, i'm unable to watch netflix. Let me know exactly what you are meaning. I'm having the same problem on Avatar 4.2.2

[Q] Updated phone, re-rooted it, can't use WiFi Tether now?

Hey guys! As the title says, I updated my phone from ICS to Jelly Bean, re-rooted it, and now I can't use WiFi Tether. I changed the device profile to "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0) when I first got the app on ICS in order for it to work, and it doesn't work on that setting now. I've tried many other settings, and none of them work either. It says that tethering has started, the log doesn't show any errors, but when I try to connect with various devices, they just won't connect to it. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance!
I remember reading that tethering does not work on jb ROMs. Im pretty sure there is a jb ROM that does claim it works, just to lazy to find you a link
can it USB tether?
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using xda premium
Look for the WiFi Tether-TrevE Mod.
I couldn't get tethering to work on Touchwiz JB even with TrevE mod, which is a shame because my phone is unlocked and on a carrier that does support tethering, yet it's still being blocked by Tmobile. Grr. Anyways, that's part of the reason I switched to AOKP. I highly recommend it.
WiFi Tether-TrevE Mod works for me on a stock JB rooted SGS2.
Haven't tried the Treve mod one yet, I'll give that a try and I'll post results, thanks!
Edit: So with that app, none of my devices see the network (my pc, my other phone, and my PS Vita).
I haven't tried USB tethering with it, because the only reason I tether with it is to play my Vita online when I'm not at home, so I have no use for USB tethering
