I just got my international unlocked N7100 yesterday, and noticed that it is the Hong Kong (HK) version.
Since this phone was made for the Chinese market, I am just wondering if it perhaps means that Samsung built some spyware or monitoring software/hardware as a request from the Chinese Communist Party as a way to track or monitor people who might use this phone. Is there anyway to determine this? Is it safer to just flash another ROM on the phone, or might there be some hardware monitoring on the phone that gets activated/turned on regardless of what ROM is on there?
Thanks!
I think you are overreacting lol.
Just flash to a Non HK based firmware if you are 2nd guessing

Flashed N7100XXALJ3 (UK unbranded), so no more possible spyware/monitoring software on my GN2.

OK. So from 17th April I am eligible for an upgrade. I have looked around and I'm not overly convinced by some of the phones which are out at the moment.
I was just wondering if people had any suggestions ?

Ye, they had and expressed it in 7 pages thread right here. It is not that hard even if you don't frequent the forums very often. All you have to do is ask yourself is it likely that this question wasn't answered already in a forum of 3.5 million users.

Let's say you are definitely so not convinced with a particular model but the people here recommended that same model.. what then?

Well, ideally you should go to a shop and try out the phone for a bit and see whether it suits your needs. What highly recommended model is it with which you're so unconvinced?
Are you staying with an HTC? If not, I would wait for the "rumoured Samsung galaxy SIII"
To Canadian owners of the I747 GS3, welcome to your new home! XDA has officially added your devices to this forum! As such, let's all work to make the moderators' and developers' jobs easier by doing the following:
Threads: Would all of you who have started threads in the previous forum that relate to Rogers, Bell, or Telus, please indicate in bold in the thread title that it should be moved here and specify which section you want it moved to.
Update - 07/30/2012: There are still a number of Rogers/Bell/Telus specific threads in the old section without any direction to move them. If you are the OP to any of these threads, please edit the titles to reflect which carrier and section they apply to so that they will be moved to the appropriate new section. Time is running out so please do this asap, as per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803287
Development: Being added to this forum does not mean that anything has magically changed from the previous forum relating to compatibility of your device. If, for whatever reason, an AT&T mod was not safe to flash before, it is still not safe to flash! Continue to read the OP, search, and post in the thread, if you are unsure whether something is safe to install on your device. You alone are responsible for the health of your device, so please exercise that responsibility fully.
If there is anything else that you feel should be added to this thread, or you have any questions, please feel free to either send me a PM, or post in the thread below.
This change was definitely the right decision, as most of us are already spending the majority of our time on this thread, given the almost identical nature of our phones. Looking forward to working with our US GS3 colleagues in building the great community this has the potential to be!
Excellent, thank you!
OP updated, please update titles of threads from the old section you want moved asap.
So far I see no problems with AT&T mods and rogers. Some minor issues. But would be nice to have our own section

This is our section. Without our at&t friends, development would be a 10th of what it is now. As we pretty much have the same phone, this is the best structure for all i747 owners.

From what I've been reading, you can do the update over Kies even if your phone doesn't notify you.

That is correct. I updated, no problems, through kies. I then re-rooted using the Samsung Rom toolbox to flash cwm through Odin, and superuser through cwm. Finally, set the trip counter back to zero with the triangle away app (you can get it through Google Play). The whole process was flawless.
Update upgrades us to the latest modem, LH1, way faster lte speeds. Also some other minor ui changes to the stock messaging app and browser.

What! So upgrading will lose root access?
What per se is Samsung Rom toolbox if you don't mind me asking, is that JRummy's Rom Toolbox you're referring to?
Sounds like a bit of a process, I was so proud of myself to finally tackle installing cwm via adb. Now that was all for nothing?! Dang...care to post a few more details and links for those who are still a little shy of turning their phone into a brick? Pretty please.

Thanks....It is actually your Idea though...
No...NoteII is not officially released it but I have read here that it is available for pre-order online....
Is the 64 GB version going to be a release model, or will it release way later like it did with the S3?
Is there an SD card port?
How much is the SPen?
How mod friendly is the Note? By this I mean I suspect it's basically the same as the S3 but do the mods do a good job of incorporating the pen?
What are some good apps that are optimized for something like the Note as opposed to other android phones?

I think 64gb version will be released late as Sammy has been doing for ages...
Yeah....it has a external microsd cars slot.
Spen for note was around $100 here in India 3months back. But since note2 has a different spen,I suppose it can only be said when Sammy puts it on sale...
By mod,do you mean custom roms???if so,if the rom is based on stock rom,it will be fully compatible. But if the rom is AOSP,you will miss all features of spen but still you can use it as a normal stylus.
You can find all spen optimized apps in samsung's s-choice app.

Yea you did. This is the third post I have posted in. Foxhound is for i9300 devices. This ROM cannot be used on US/Canadian variants. The other two people I posted for also flashed and also hard bricked.
Your only bet is to contact your network provider and see if they will replace it or pay between 60-80 USD for a JTAG resurrection.

If you just got it, there's no harm in trying to get an exchange. Simply say you woke up and your device no longer boots. It has worked for me in the past, and, reportedly, one of the previous mentioned foxhound victims.
In the future make sure you stick with your devices codename and model number (d2att =ATT, d2tmo = Tmobile, d2spr = Sprint, d2vzw = Verizon). model is i747.
Galaxy S3 is a very touchy device and in my experience very easy to hard brick.
Good luck with your exchange!

Yes there is. Also, you should always be using the one from the carrier it came from when using stock.
I thought they have the same hardware, can you elaborate why it can't be done?

Mind if I ask why it matters? (not trying to be rude)
And the bootloaders and radio are different if I remember correctly. (A simple search would give you a better, more detailed answer)

I can speak from experience, if he's in Canada on the Stock ATT ROM, on the Telus Network, the Stock ROM could get very annoying.
For example:
When you open the contacts app it tries to sync to ATT for a good 1-3 minutes until it finally fails because it can't sync to ATT and only then can you see your contacts.

No I understand the question, I was just letting you know a reason on "why it matters" and why he may want to have telus on his att variant.

The difference is the modem which connects to the network, wifi, Bluetooth and carrier restrictions/bloatware. You should use the rom that corresponds to your device to avoid issues with connecting to your network and etc. I think someone mentioned it could brick your phone (flashing Telus rom onto att s3).
