Just wondering why my phone basically went off the grid because one second I was using the internet having a good time. A little slow as 3g sucks ass in my area but now its gone to an incredibly slow crawl taking ten minutes to load Google and another 5 to load a damn simple search. Friend has a crappy evo shift that's getting insanely fast speeds and loading things fine. Same network same house anyone know what's up?

I think your best bet would try and do a fresh re-flash of your current ROM (using Calkulin's format all) , or Odin to stock then see if the issue still occurs. Of course make a Nandroid Backup if you do.
thanks I'll try that but I'm thinking the cyanogenmod 9 alpha 3 first. Been waiting on that for a while

That's fine, I was just saying the current ROM in case you wanted to stay on it. Perfect time to give any other ROM a shot and start fresh.
Just be careful and read the instructions first.
I flash other roms all the time thats not the issue feom what i understand teying to flash different modems till u find the one that works best is the way to go i have flashed about 5 so gb modems seem to work better fyi u can use ics and gb modems on a ics rom but if u r on a gb rom u cant use ics modems

I just learned something from Mr. X that I found very useful and thought id share.
I got horrible signal and data connection with ICS roms, and the blaze radio wasn't much better in my area. I learned that you if you remove the system folder from the radio you want to use ( I used the vk1) before flashing, it works like a charm!
In case you don't know how to do so, here's what I did.
Download the radio, long press the file and extract it. Then press go to extracted. Then open the exracted file, and delete the system folder. Then long press the extracted file and choose zip file. When that process is done, save the new zip to your external sd, flash and enjoy!
Thx Mr.X!

I read the OP and just used my oi file explorer. it could do all the same steps but when I went to flash, it would always abort installation. using root explorer solved the issue first try.
Much faster lock for data, and faster data speeds. thanks for pulling this gem out of the modem Dev thread, and thanks Mr. X for the tip.
I'm confused what the point of this is.
Im using gingerbread modems with ics and have no compatibility or other issues.
What is this for? Improving speed? Using different modems? If so which?

The purpose is to remove the gingerbread ril files from the zip so they dont overwrite the ICS ones, which would cause the radio to no longer make a connection.

Of course when you flash with Odin it flashed the modem with it. So he's not mistaken'd.
The only way you can get an ICS radio to work with GB is if they modified it and removed the ICS RIL files in the modem and vice versa for ICS radio's to work on GB which most of the Dev's did in their ROM selection. That's why you see modified modem in their OP's at times.
I had ics on my telus phone and proceeded to restore my phone due to issues and when I rebooted I was running gingerbread.
So loaded up kies to do a update to ics and said I couldn't so i took a look and was running lle4 in gingerbread and everything ran fine.
I had to manually upgrade go ics through cwm after

lol You can odin to anything because stock odins carry ROM kernel modem and recovery...
However if you RESTORE from a BACKUP it may or may not give you problems. depends if the radio is modified or not.

As for my rom i'm still on stock TouchWiz although i do have Agat's Recovery installed. I'm looking around and trying to compare which ROM to flash, and so far i'm leaning towards ReVolt, or i might try and give the official CM 10.1 nightlies a go

I tried that one a few months ago and had GPS issues.
So far for me the most reliable custom ROM has been Dastin's WFTN and the official CM10.1 releases, though YMMV.
Even then I wound up flashing back to stock TouchWiz because of data speeds being faster on TouchWiz/GB28 than on any CM10/ICS or Gingerbread modem I tried.
Plus there were graphics corruption issues with GPS Test+ on every custom ROM I tried.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that it has to do with Mali driver issues, but I'm really not certain why.
As far as Virgin Mobile goes, I've been with them for 4 years come January and I'm not going to make it 5.
Locally, Sprint's network is crap and now that I have a real smartphone instead of a glorified music player like the Intercept, the connection problems are too glaring to overlook.
Come next January I'll probably have a used E4GT for sale cheap.
I'm using the EG30 modem with Dirty Unicorns and my data speeds are a little better then when I was on GB28.
The speeds that I get from speedtest on non-JB modems are very close to the GB28 modem, but not quite as fast under ideal conditions.
This part I understand as the EvDO version connected to under 'About Phone>Status. is A:6 on all of the non-JB modems while it says A:7 or A:8 on GB28.
I could live with that, but the other speed issue is that no matter which modem I've tried, I get a pause during testing speeds about a quarter of the way through the DL test that looks like Mount Everest on the DL graph.
I have no idea if it's something unique to my phone, a glitch in CM, or something to do with Sprint's ****ty local network buildout, but it's easily reproducible on several different custom ROM/modem combinations.
But as I said in my first post, Your Mileage May Vary™.

The first post in a ROM's thread is called the Original Post, or OP. Every rom OP has detailed instructions on how to install, or flash that particular ROM. Good luck, and just make sure you are flashing e4gt roms only, and since I see you are on VM, after you flash, Google how to change the mmsc url so you can send mms. Enjoy!
