[Q] Anyone feel like helping a beginner? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am painfully new to the community, so if you're frustrated easily this might be a bad thread to read.
Not too long ago, I picked up a desire (bravo) on kijiji (a buy/sell site, not really important). It had a much lower price than other comparable phones, and I would imagine it was because it is locked to Rogers and came with CM7 on it. At the time, I still had time on my old contract. Thinking I was up for the challenge of new technology i went for it. Being the curious guy I am I tinkered with it and found an abundance of Roms floating around on the internet, so wanting to know what was going on with this (understand that I knew nothing about the matter), I flashed AOKP 6. Honestly it is a very clean Rom, and up untill this morning I thought it was great. My contract ran out yesterday, so I activated my desire last night. It will not connect to the Rogers network. It is locked to Rogers and has a Rogers sim, so I'm not sure why it's doing this . I believe it did before I flashed AOKP6.
Any suggestions on how to get it to connect?
I need someone to hold my hand through the process of either flashing a new stable rom or fixing my current one.
Any help appreciated.
-Salt
Ps. If my spelling is off, it's because Chrome broke.

Since you already installed AOKP6 before, I assume you're rooted and have a recovery installed.
Download a stable GB ROM like this and put it on your SD card and flash it from your Recovery. Thats it.
Read the OP of the ROM carefully to see if you meet all the criteria mentioned. Dont forget to do a clean wipe before the install.

Thanks for the reply. I went back to cm7 and tried a few others and came to the conclusion it was Rogers' fault. Now running Paranoid android jelly bean and everything is going well.

Newbie fear of tinkering with phone ?

Bought this phone wanting faster internet than what I had.
I really have not messed with this phone for 3 months and have been OK with what I am paying and the speeds I get. Nothing to write home about, but faster than what I had.
For almost a week now the thing has a hard time getting connected then it is really bad once connected.
Always dropping off (getting lost) Having to reload pages over and over because the signal goes away.
It switches from 3G back to 1x a lot.
A friend rooted this and installed tether, taskiller, and a few other things I can't remember.
I had tried to remove stuff running in the back ground as best I could a couple of months ago trying to save battery life (which sucks) with no problems.
So what gives?
I live 40 miles south of the Nations Capitol and 20 miles west of the great Interstate 95 bumper to bumper traffic corridor.
I know where the tower is (4 miles away) and don't think there will be any new ones anytime soon.
It's still out in the sticks.
Frustrated and I really don't want to brick this phone since I got rid of my landline.
Root it, flash the .04.08 leaked evo radio. I'm running it and have gotten much better 3g speeds. You won't regret it
Sent from my HTC Incredible
If you do ROOT your Inc you'll want to flash a custom ROM to get the optimized experience.
I would suggest SkyRaider 4.0
Also if you upgrade to the evo radio (2.15.4.08) BE CAREFUL! This is the easiest way to brick your phone.
Download the radio and also download the app called MAND5 from the market.
ManD5 will verify the checksum of the radio.
Compare the checksum to the downloaded radio to what it says it should be in either the thread or website.

Also, SR4.0 has wireless tether included in the ROM.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Personally, I'd opt for the 2.15.10.05.06 Incredible GB radio, as it's resulted in a low-but-reliable signal in some previously intermittent-signal areas I frequent here in the same area of the country. It's important to note that the effectiveness of the various radios seems to vary from phone to phone and location to location, so YMMV.
As for a custom ROM, if you like Sense, the previously mentioned SkyRaider 4.0 is nice, but if not, CyanogenMod 7 is really quite lovely. A Sense ROM will obviously be more like what you already have, but I have non-technical friends who have transitioned to a vanilla build with no problem.
Kernels can also help with battery life. I use Incredikernel--there's a 12/23 Sense kernel if you want to stick with a Sense ROM, or the 4/19 stable if you go with a vanilla gingerbread build, as well as an upcoming new release (currently in beta).
My understanding is that flashing radios is the most dangerous part, but it's also very straightforward. I know modding the phone can be a bit intimidating, but as long as you read and follow instructions, make frequent backups, don't go installing random things willy-nilly, and ensure you've got sufficient battery life, the risks are minimal. Plus, it can become a bit addictive.
If you're in warranty, root. If you brick it you will just be without a phone for a few days while you ask for a refurb (I know, I'm currently on my 3rd DInc, first one bricked and second got USB Bricked), but if that's not acceptable than just don't flash a radio. If you don't flash radios, there is a very low chance of getting bricked.
It sounds like you don't have much personal stuff on the phone. I'd make sure my contacts are backed up then do a factory reset. Let Google bing your contacts back then do a *228 Option 1. This way you'll have at least gotten rid of any interfering apps (I've heard that Task Killer can cause issues) and you'll know that your phone is programmed to the current towers.
THEN, if it still has problems, of if you just want to explore, you can start playing!
i have had my phone since it came out and rooted it as soon as i could and i still have luckily not bricked it. just make sure you back everything up and check md5 sums with the radios and test different radios, since some will work better than others.
You guys are speaking a whole different language
I have no idea what most of you are talking about and don't know where to look for this stuff.
"Root it, flash the .04.08 leaked evo radio" No idea what you saying here
"If you do ROOT your Inc you'll want to flash a custom ROM to get the optimized experience.
I would suggest SkyRaider 4.0

What is radio? I don't want to listen to radio.
What would happen if I just tried the *228 option?
Verizon said I needed to do this every few months but I am concerned it will mess up the root job my friend did on the phone.
Your not gonna mess anything up doing a *228, don't worry about that.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
*228 wont do anything to your phone just type *22899 and it skips all the talk and goes straight to the, I guess you call it the update screen.

Lmao...
The radio on your phone is the firmware that is used to communicate with the cell tower. Your going to want to look at this thread and read it over a couple times before even rooting your phone...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744807
...and also read the thread that's hyperlinked in that post.
From your last response, I wouldn't changed anything. There are all kinds of tutorials that take you through a step by step process to root. If you do a little research, you could have all your questions answered.
Words of warning
One of the surest ways to brick one of these is by not being patient enough. Never if your flashing something never pull the battery. Only flash when your battery is over 50% if it dies in the middle of flashing something it can brick it. Flashing roms and kernals is pretty safe following the above 2 cautions.
Flashing radios is kinda on the edge due to it accessing a completely diffrent memory space really you only need to worry if the radio you flashed is not the correct one for your phone or is corrupt due to some downloading error. This is why the md5 is checked if it passes chances are the download happened as it was susposed to and is the correct file.
Probably right
Shouldn't mess with it.
Be nice if all this wasn't so "underground" and one could walk in to a store and say
unlock this and give me what I want with a guarantee that it isn't going to be an expensive paperweight.
I got this thing thinking I would finally have decent internet speeds.
If I had known I was going to have to update roms and radios and who knows what else every other month I never would have got the stupid thing.
I haven't had a cell phone for 10 years.
And didn't miss it either.
See people everyday clutching the thing like it was an umbilical cord to momma.
Ridiculous. . . . and sad.
So I am going to ask again, if I do the *22899 thing, will it screw up my tether or rooted phone from getting online?
Will I have to alter anything else after *22899 ?

Your phone should reboot after the programming. If it doesn't, turn it off and turn it back on.
Reading your input above, you might be more comfortable with something less complicated. Go back to your rotary dial land line.
That helped
That seems to have helped anyway.
Thanks for the replies, even from you young pompous types.
I don't think anyone is being pompous here.
Rooting a phone is not always the answer. You need to understand what you're doing, and what the risks are. There is plenty of information on this forum to learn what rooting, flashing roms, and flashing radios entails... If you are interested. If you are not, I would not recommend rooting.
Verizon gives you what they are comfortable guaranteeing. They understandably are not going to support multiple ROMs or unofficial radios. My wife's phone is stock, because *I* don't want to support it. Nothing wrong with that.
It is rather hard to brick this phone if you understand what you're doing. On the other hand, if you don't know what *NOT* to do, you could end up with a brick fairly easily. Read the posts out there designed for beginners. Understand what you want to do. Make sure you have time to finish what you want to do. If any of these things seem like too much to do, leave it stock.
^^agreed.
i mean if you are not comfortable rooting your phone then you probably shouldnt do it, but the only way you will learn is by doing it yourself. thats how most of us know bout everything you can do once your phone is rooted.
My suggestion, if you're confused or uncomfortable with the technology, DON'T MESS WITH IT. Lots of people use the stock phone software very happily. If you take it, completely unmodified, to Verizon, and explain your problem, they'll be happy to assist you.
You don't have to root. You don't have to do anything you aren't comfortable with. Good luck.

[Q] Boot loop problem

Hi, I have a few questions I hope you can help me with?
My wife has a galaxy nexus, stock and unrooted. It is only around 6 weeks old and last week it started crashing, turning off then getting stuck in a boot loop just displaying the starting colours. I understand this is a known problem, she has software version 4.0.2 and it says her phone is up to date.
I "fixed" her phone once with a factory reset however this time she is away with work till Friday and now has no use of her phone or contractual minuets or data ect.
To make things worst she was planning on using the sat nav and wireless tethering to her laptop. It is the second time this has happened and she has lost all faith in her phone. She can maybe upgrade the software by downloading the 4.0.4 software but she/I don't see why she should have too. She just wants a phones that does what it says on the tin without needing to mod or mess around with it.
My questions are...
Is this problem enough for her to exchange the phone for another phone all together, she fancies a One X. Has anyone here managed to exchange the phone for this reason?
If not will updating the software to 4.0.4 fix the issue for sure? She really needs a reliable phone. Maybe it will be best to send it back under the warranty but we are afraid she will get another GNex with the same issue.
Any advice will be much appreciated
Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading,
Oliver
I would just try updating it and then wipe it. If that doesn't fix the issue it's most likely a hardware issue and I would warranty the phone.

Hey there,
Well first I would suggest calming down and not reverting to hardware issues just yet, Bootloops are pretty common, especially when using phones which were meant for the (a bit) more advanced user, it's advantage is also it's flaw, being a modding monster that it is..
And this is by no means a flame - but I wouldn't want my wife to have a GN for that exact same reason, yes - she knows about flashing roms and stuff, but she needs a reliable phone, that will work and do what she needs it to do and nothing more, as opposed to me, I like to mess around a bit with my phones (also not that much, I plan to stay stock with my GN).
To your question, I don't have any experience with RMA's but it maybe worth a try.
You also mentioned she fancies the one-x.. that means she wasn't really keen on buying the GN in the first place (I believe).. and also - and don't take this the wrong way - I think she\you don't really know what the GN is all about, this isn't a phone for everybody, I mean - it is, but it's a shame to see it fall into hands that do not appreciate it for what it is, think of it as a nice new Ferrari, sure - it'll get your wife to work But she is not going to the Nurborgring to time her laps with it.. she'll complain that once in a while the clutch is too sensitive and that she cannot count on the car to take her to work every day, and that she really fancies the new Volkswagen beetle... you get my drift
Also - I believe that flashing to the 4.0.4 will sort the bootloops, which usually has everything to do with the kenrel.
Best of luck!
p.s. All of the above is said in a humoristic way!

Thanks for your post.
My wife wanted to upgrade her htc desire to a faster phone with bigger screen, she loves android and Google products and the Google nexus seemed like the best choice at the time (b4 the one X was released) she loved the phone till now.
The phone has twice randomly gone into a boot loop and twice we managed to get it working again both times within the week. This has caused her to lose faith in the phone. I guess the update should fix the issue but it doesn't seem to be available on her phone just yet.
A basic phone would not be enough 4 my wife, as I said in my first post she uses it to connect her laptop to the Internet and as a satnav. Also she watches youtube videos (720p screen is handy here) and for facebook.
We never had any such issues with our desires. When my wife returns home we will update her phone via pc if it doesn't void warranty (I'm sure it won't ) and hopefully the issue will be fixed for good.

Sounds like our wives can get along my wify loves her htc desire hd! and to be honest, in my opinion in many ways it's much better than the sensation I had (stock).
And by what you described, if I was your wife (lol ) I'd also go for the GN.. I trust you know how to upgrade to 4.0.4, if you need any help just say so and I'll be more than happy to help
Also - from what I know upgrading will not void you warranty, you can simply lock the bootloader once you're done upgrading if you wish.
I really wish the bootloops will stop and that you wife will continue to enjoy her GN!
Hi again
I unlocked, rooted and installed Android Revelution HD 3.0.0 (based on 4.0.4) by mike1986 on her phone.
She is happy with her phone again.
Now it's rooted she likes the extra apps she can now install like AdFree.
I have a quick noob question though..
After installing the new rom her phone it said their is an update available. I understand that she should NOT accept over the air updates now she has a custom rom, and is that right?
Cheers, Oliver
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Hey Oliver, sorry.. seems I didn't get subscription notifications on your reply...
anyway, she "can" download the update, but it will not install, it will simply give an error upon installation, the reason is the original files that the update needs to update are not there anymore, or they are but have changed, so it will just give an installation error.. that's the only downside to having a custom rom. me personally - I like mine stock at the moment
Just a quick update, I rooted, s- offed and install Arhd rom on my wife's gnex.
She says her phone is running faster/smoother than ever and has not restarted since. It's running great and she is happy again

[Q] A Cautious and Hopeful Noob

Hello and thanks for reading yet another "noobaholic anonymous" post. I spent most of last night searching, and could not find what I was looking for... and the things that seemed relevant, were 2 years old. That's a century in this hobby. Sooooo....
Here's my dilemma. A year and several months ago, I rooted and ROM'd my Droid X with CM7. It was a cakewalk! But, I REALLY lusted for a HTC Inc2. So I switched to the Inc2 a year ago. Like you, I've been waiting for the ICS update, which isnt coming. So I've decided to go ahead and hot rod this sucker. I am on Page Plus, so warranty means nothing to me.
I've seen plenty of posts to downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3, I can handle that I think. And from what I've read of the various ROM's, it looks like Skyraider Zeus is the one for me. I want to keep the Sense stuff (clock, weather, calendar, notifications, phone launcher etc) but everything else is fair game.
So once I do the 2.3.3 thing and root my Inc2, where do I get the latest ROM and how do I get it on my phone? Also, I would like to try the GingerBangSense ROM and maybe CM7.2 as they get good reviews - is there some way to switch between them? Or do I have to go all the way to root and start over from scratch?
Forgive my asking the "same old stupid questions", I realize they've been asked before a million times. But as I said, the Inc2 is getting quite long in the tooth and there are a ZILLION threads on it. What scared me enough to stick my neck out and ask all these questions in this thread - is I cant find a concise thread in the latter part of 2012 or 2013. I didnt want to screw something up or miss out on something that's happened since early 2011 or whenever the majority of the threads were birthed.
So thank you again, for taking time to help someone trying to regain his sanity.

Once you downgrade to 2.3.3, and obtain clockwork, you can flash as much as you want. Skyraider can be found on the bamf forum.

Thanks for the replies. ANY help is greatly appreciated.
I found this thread and am planning on using it to do the S-OFF/clockwork stuff http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219246
But there's nothing about flashing a ROM. Would you recommend a thread for that? I assume Clockwork is what I'll be using to install the ROM's?

Download the ROM you want to flash and place it on your SD card
Wipe data/cache/dalvic. I haven't used clockwork in a while so I don't remember what its called. 4ext let's you wipe everything but the SD card.
After the wipe, install ROM VIA CLOCKWORK. Then reboot.
Most ROM threads include instructions on flashing said ROMS.
Good luck.
Edit: dumb

Here is a good thread for multiple ways on rooting. Because the Inc2 got software updates rooting became problematic for some for a while. Figure out what version you are first before rooting.

Once done, download a ROM onto your sd card, reboot into recovery and do the following:
- Make a Nandroid (backup)
- Wipe data
- Wipe dalvik/cache
(I format system next)
- install file from sd card
- reboot and profit!
Thank you all, I am now the proud owner of a fully rooted and rom'd Dinc2. If I could, I would hand out candy or liquor, depending on your age
At the moment, I'm running Skyraider Zeus 1.3. Of course the ROM'ing bug has bitten, so IC Tazz is downloading at the moment and I'm thinking GingerBliss may be next. I'm torn though, I like the Sense GUI but would of course like the latest updated stuff... most of the ICS based or any of the CM stuff seems to have stripped out the Sense and it all looks like my old (and ugly..) Droid X. Any recommendations or are the 3 ROM's I've mentioned so far about it?
I have one more question for you elder statesmen - I have Clockwork Recovery on the phone right now. I see a couple others listed as TWRP or EXT4, are they any better or necessary for any other ROMs? Or will Clockwork do everything I need done and best to stick with it?

Viperinc is the sexiest ROM, but has lag issues. Pacman is pretty stable.
4ext is way better than cwm and you can get the recovery control app which makes managing backups, wipes a breeze.

I tried SRZ, it wasn't bad but I wanted to try ICS, so I loaded IC Tazz. I like 90% of it but GEEZ is that Sense 4.0 clock terrible looking! I realize you can load Fancy Widgets and get the Sense 2.x clock / weather look, but it does not trigger the Sense weather like the HTC clock does. SOooooo..... if there is some way of getting my good ol' HTC clock/weather (2.x) in IC Tazz, I'd be happy.
Oh - the OTHER iritation - on the lock screen, the clock is such a terrible skinny font! I dont know about you guys, but I use my phone as a time piece all through the day. So I wil whip it out and glance at the clock. I'm getting older (too old..) and really miss the 2.x clock skin/font/etc.
Other than that, WOW, what a nice update.
Now about the 4ext vs CWM - I read as many posts as I felt were relevant, and TWRP sounded like the best choice. So I downloaded Goomanager from the Play store, and used it to install TWRP (according to the instructions on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943592 ) It did it's thing, but there's no icon for TWRP on the phone now. Part of the perk was this was touch driven and no more volume/power button launching... so now what? I'm downloading Viper right now, so I'd like to slap it on the Dinc2 and check it out before I make my final choice and reactivate this phone. (I've got it offline till I get it "right")

You will still have to get into TWRP with the power menu but once you are in there you can navigate without using the volume and power buttons to back up and install things.

In the last 24 hours I went from bonestock 2.3.4, to 2.3.3 to S-OFF to full root, to SRZ to IC Tazz, with CWM. Then TWRP went on and ViperINC went on... THEN I really lost my mind and put the 320 radio on it. Noob to Addict in 24 hours.
See what you guys created? You gotta be careful giving out all this information!
While I have your attention, and being I dont have enough posts to comment in the 'dev' area, if I should go back to SRZ or ICT, am I going to have to flash the radio? I looked ALL over and can not find a single working radio link. For what it's worth - I saw no gain from the 622 (GB) radio to the 320 (ICS) db wise.

You shouldn't need to change radios.

On the ViperINC thread (the ROM), they had the radio listed right below it. Being the radio in my phone was several generations old (622) and my reception SUCKS, and (and and and..) I never flashed a radio before and I was feeling confident with my new found toys.... I went ahead and flashed it.
I reactivated the phone today, and can say the reception is not any better in the areas I usually use it. I guess it's just the flaw of the Dinc2.

I meant you shouldn't have to change it back. Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for the clear up. What about the 320 radio being ICS based? SRZ is GB based, for example... last thing I want to do is brick my phone. Today I found a possible crippling flaw in the Venom ROM - the voice doesnt work on Google Maps. I use that app a lot, so I may have to revert to GB for now.

The radio works fine on all versions of android.
Sent from my Nitsy CM7.
Is the "radio" only for the phone (calls) or does it also do the GPS? Since I loaded ViperINC, my GPS does not work.

try the patch, the thread for it is in the dev section, fishing the radio should not have affected it, and radios have nothing to do with the version of android, its seperate, a firmware...

[Q] old man old phone old roms? help Please!

ok Hi everyone!
no i do not have ADO (Attention deficit order) or any other brain dissorder! just old slow and feeble!
i got the HTC EVO 4G my two year contract with the sprint WOGS is up about two months ago my phone died and best buy got me a brand new one!
then i see that new samsung galaxy note 2 and ooooowww
So my old brain kicks in and says mod your evo
ok at this point
so i rooted mt evo 4g with HTCDEV and revolutionary some how i ended up installing revolutionary but the phone still works
but yes i did not do a backup of the original system on the phone!!
well i am now thinking since i am rooted and s-off abot a custom ROM??
ok this is were the old man comes in
i only wish do do this once and most of you all here it seems do this every day as a type of hobby
what i would like to find in a custom ROM is everthing to work as the phone works now but hopefully even better
and to get rid of all this BS poopwear sprint has loaded into this phone
a ROM that looks great and new and as stable as stock?? with maybe some new apps to play with
So the Question is? Is there a ROM out here filled with the above???
Question 2
when you root a phone and s-off then do a custom rom, does sprint know what you have done or can they find out
and if so can they mess with you or bug you??
no i do not see men in black everywere!
just have seen post about watermarks and sprint knows! just was hoping to get the truth here!
I will start with your second question. The only way Sprint will know is if you have to take it on for service. So no worries there.
As far as a ROM goes there are many solid, stable, fully working roms. You will be limited to the older gingerbread roms. All the newer ones lack drivers for front camera and Wimax (4g). Now to find what you want will take searching on your part. There are a few different versions of sense which is HTC's launcher and then you have AOSP which looks completely different. When I get on a computer I will give you some links to check out.

Since you have been using the EVO for a few years and are used the the Sense UI I would recommed
starting out with The Classic. A very solid ROM by tommytomatoe. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312414
So many out there, all great, most of devs remove all the crap when we buid the roms guess it comes down to what you like.
You like stock, or themes,
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
The first two you listed will work 100% but the last one is a jelly bean ROM that has no front camera or 4G. Plus other minor issues. The classic would be like your stock ROM only way better.

Sorry if i sound like a dumb ass
i have gone to alot of web sites trying to dig all the info in can from the words i can make sence from!
i am not here to beat no one up or down!! i had asked help from one site when i went to root my phone
and was kind of kick for being a noob and asking a question the guy thought everyone should have known!
that is why i am here! i am sure you all have looked at other web sites about all this rooting around and roms.
what you all do in customizing the cell phones is ??? really i do not have a better word GREAT!! (each generation has there own words and phrases, and sometimes we have to teach the old people like are parents the new stuff that has come out)
i would say this i am like all of you! but way older i think and definitely not any way near as smart as you all are here
as to stock or theme? i take it theme is the way the new rom will look??
i will say this as the way for the last 2 years looking at my phone well im borrrred with it
if it had a big pair of breast attached to it well i would not be here "SORRY LADIES!!!"
so yes new looking and way better to play with! STOCK ? no i had that
stable is my concerne with a new rom as once i do the flash (flahing the rom) to the phone i do not want to have to worry about this software to fix this bug or that bug then digging up this file to get this or that to work!
does this make any sence to you all??
ok an old man would think (sorry if im wrong here!!) if one was to install a new rom on ????phone all that would be needed
would be one file! do the vol. and power button go to revolutionary install zip file from sd card wait and poof your done!!
ya ya what joint is that old fart smoking!!!
AGAIN THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP HERE
Classic.
Maybe Synergy if you don't care about CIQ.
I ran AlterROM for awhile: it might be in your comfort zone and it provides a ton of installation options if you want to explore a little.
But really just start with Classic. The "updater" app included with Classic may need some kind of fix , read the last few pages of that thread to get current.
Have fun!

Ok i will jump in here and do the ROM] The Classic v0.1.0 - finale
and i will download the ]TN_Elousions_3_Rooted_latest_OTA_5.07.651.6_supers onic_Deoxed_2/19/1
and try that one later
so my dumb old man question is now
1 do the vol down and power
since i have revolutionary installed i go to recovery then the revolutionary screen pops up and from that i chose install zip file from sd card
and that is it?? or do i do the same for both files this one v0.1.0p3 Supermagic Finale and this one classic.cx entry
from this web page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312414
or is this more over my head
The Tn elousions 3 is stock I have not done anything with that yet other then deoxing it.
My elousions 2.2.2 is the trixed out one. Just to let you no.
Don't forget to wipe dalvic and dalvic cache
Better yet wipe everything except SD card.
Make a nandroid backup before you do anthing.

well i did the classic rom
the first time i flashed it and it all loaded up anything to do with the internet would not work
thought maybe i got a bad download from this crappy satellite hughes.net system we are on
so i redownloaded it again and wee hee it all works!!!
just wished the bottom screen buttons had some kind of lay out like the evo 4g did
phone, apps, etc.
i will run this and see what happens i hope no bugs pop up
ya and you are right there is alot of do-hickies added to this!
i just hope i do not mess something up now
if he had put in the butttons for the phone, apps, etc
from my stand point this rom would be the greatist
but it is my first rom i have flashed so who knows maybe there is one that is better out there!!!
I would like too THANK YOU ALL!!! Very much for your GREAT WORK HERE!! and your help with me on this venture!!!
THANKS ALLOT!!
Bill
Haha actually I agree with you, I was never a fan of what Tommy called the "Ghost Rosie". Ironically it's one of the things that really distinguishes the ROM and it took a lot of work for him to make it do that.
Anyway I'm pretty sure you can "turn off" that feature and bring back a always-visible phone button, either by a tweak (changing a setting that Tommy provided in some control panel somewhere) or via a mod (some flashable zip that modifies that Rosie).
Or you can always download a custom launcher from the market.

The jelly bean roms are not filled with bloat ware, they come with the apps needed for a root user to do the right things. Plus they are pretty stable at this point, just minor things that don't work, except it would be nice if we could get 4G Wimax back on the latest roms. Front facing camera just needs a driver as well as Wimax, but I do not miss those things as I am connected to wifi mostly.

newbie question, having issues with custom rom

Ok guys, first time I've posted on this forum. just registered. My partner "persuaded" me to switch from an iPhone 3GS, 4S, then 5....to an Android, and after spending all that money on iPhones, let's say I'll never touch one again LOL
So now to the question:
I have a Galaxy Note II with AT&T SGH-i317
He helped me root it, and install a custom rom on to it. We installed several, but then finally AVATAR, which I love. The only problem is that BOTH of our phones now, take about 1,000% longer to charge. And that's not a joke. Some things I've noticed.
We're using the newest one (I'm using the update of yesterday, June 8th, 2013. he's using the previous one, may 23rd I think.
We BOTH have the same battery issues.
We BOTH can not stream netflix on either device.
MY phone succeeded with the update no problems whatsoever.
HIS phone failed to "read" off the internal memory card, but nothing wrong with internal storage from what we can tell. So therefore, the install "failed" on his.
His Note 2 fails to run "The price is right slots" when he tries to run it or connect it to facebook. MINE runs and does it fine. (with the previous version OR this newest one)
Then I noticed the ROM we were using identifies our devices as a N7105. the ROM build: avatar-2.14b-1058-20130607-t0lte
THIS is the CORRECT ROM for the AT&T Sgh-i317: avatar-2.9b-737-20130503-t0lteatt --> Which I've just discovered. (LOL *facepalm*)
Is there a chance that this is causing "battery charging issues"? and what other issues might this be causing or have the potential to cause?
I guess what I am asking is Do I NEED or is it advisable to change to the PROPER AT&T ROM? or will I see no ill-effect of keeping this N7105 Rom?
Thanks for your quick replies
TJ
From my own personal experience, you are lucky you didn't brick it. I made that mistake and i had to buy another phone, so, yes putthe proper rom on there...
Never flash anything that is for another specific device. Technically there are some things that can be flashed but as a noob I would suggest following this rule.
