[Q] Clone device without voiding warranty? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi,
My GF's S3 is kind of broken ... the power button is loose and does not work 90% of the time. I think I could fix it myself, but if I start to disassamble her device, it most likely will void her warranty. She subscribed to a warranty plan for the carrier so I guess the safe thing to do would be to send it in repair, and get a temporary new one. The thing is I would like to clone her phone, so that when she receives the "temporary" one, it exactly feels like her phone, without 3 hours of customization and loosing all her stuff.
Is there a way to do that? I know there are some ways to root the device without voiding the warranty, but is it safe? And even if I do that, is cloning of devices possible?
Thanks
Sam
PS : It's not that I'm a complete noob, I played with my rooted S3 since I got it but I just want to make sure I don't screw anything with hers!

Make a backup and restore it on that phone?

Yeah that sounded a little retarded, completely forgot about that... I will do that, but first... Can someone help me turn the phone on again? The power button is not working at all now, and phone was turned off so now well ... Can't boot! I see the battery icon when i plug it in / put the battery in when it' plugged, but nothing more... Is there a way to "hard boot" a phone?

Take the power button off and push the button with something else?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Take the cover plate off. Plug the (A/C or USB) charger in. While the battery is charging, remove the battery. Put it back in. Take it out. Put it in. Take it out. Put it in. Do this about 5 times and the phone will magically power on. It sounds absurd, but it works

I saw that solution while searching on google, but I don't think it worked... I'll give it one more shot before I return it to the carrier for repair.
And I also tried removing the button and pushing manually the internal button, but after many, many tries, nothing

Tried unbricking with Heimdall; Now even USB JIG cannot boot phone? What?

Hello! I'm encountering a very serious problem and any help would be extremely appreciated. I had Bonsai4All on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S / Epic from Sprint) for months with no problems, til one day it randomly stopped booting and would just loop the Samsung logo or get stuck at the battery with the circle icon. Using the Clockwork Recovery menu I tried to re-flash the firmware but with the same results.. and now the 3 button download mode feature didn't work.
SO.. I got a USB JIG. That got me into Download Mode. Using Heimdall, I followed this guide (Simple Step By Step for ODIN/HEIMDALL recovery "HOW TO UNBRICK YOUR FASCINATE" ) to reflash my firmware with "CI500_VZW_EB01_FROYO_REL.tar.md5" which I now think may not have been the right file for this phone. After it uploaded all the data and said it was successful, the phone turned off. I expected it to restart, but it didn't. Just a black screen. I had it plugged into my PC via USB still. No LED to indicate it's charging, but that had happened before and it still was. Tried the power button, nothing.. unplugged it, took out the battery, put it back in, tried the JIG. Nothing--- stays at a black screen. Power button and various button combos have yielded nothing.
Does anyone know what the heck happened to my phone, and if there is anything I can do about it? I'm at the end of my rope here. I've heard of JTAG recovery, but I imagine that involves buying new tools, tearing the phone apart, voiding the warranty entirely, doing dangerous precision SMD soldering, and even then it probably isn't going to work..
Is there something else to try or should I just look into selling this to someone who can fix it, or for parts, and get a cheaper phone?
Thanks.
Ok, so you can't hold down 1 and the power button together and get to download mode right?valso, I have heard of the jig but where did you get it?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I was advised to take out the battery for 20min and then try 1+Power, I will do that in 5 minutes. That is a combination I'd not heard yet. I got the JIG from a shop that sells through Amazon.
OK, tried 1+Power.. nothing

Ok, try what you just did: Take out battery for a few minutes. Also, take out SD card. After a few minutes, plug cable that's connected to PC into phone with battery and SD out and try holding 1 and power down together again to get into download mode

Well, possibly the battery somehow died during the process. Also, I believe he was pointing out that if the battery is getting warm then the phone may not be permabricked. Usually you can find a way to rescue it. Its too soon to give up on it

Not to sound negative but I used Odin and flashed the wrong file once and my phone never recovered. I tried everything for countless days and eventually gave up. When i took it to my local sprint repair center they said they couldnt get it to turn on either. It sucks but it might be your best bet. just come up with a good story (of course leaving out that it was rooted) lol
Anyone want to buy this phone cheap? Physically, it's fine. I can't deal with this anymore.

Its trashed if you used the wrong file, because the pit that is auto detected in the Facsinate file will destroy info needed and it can't be recovered (the info) anyway that I know of.

If you do get it into download mode, I would try hooking into a computer with the battery out, then hold the 1 key on the keyboard then add pressing the power button together. You will want to grab the files from this thread and add the pit file and check repartition. Uncheck F.reset if in Odin. But Heimdall is better.

I once thought my epic failed and i tried holding the "1" and the power button on and putting the battery in and it worked.. i never tried it while plugged in though. Another thing i heard about was some reset button below the camera.. haha never tried it though.. and heres a random article i found.. hope it helps
If you flashed an epic with fascinate firmware you're pretty well hard bricked. The dude from mobile tech videos can jtag it.
http://www.mobiletechvideos.com/blog/tag/jtag/
He recovered my captivate when I got drunk and flashed the wrong bootloader. Or if you're just going to move on to a new phone, I'll give you $25 and bag of cheese for the bricked epic. If I get a bricked epic, I'm going to rip the cpu off and trace the pins so we can get the unbrickable mod working for us too.
Id buy it. What accesories do you have and how much would you want shipped? I'm thinking 50 bucks.

I followed this thread and thought posts explained why it is NOT insurance fraud. And if that person wanted to pay the $100 to put in a claim that is what the insurance is for. Is it any different than the genius that uses their phone as a hammer or the angry girlfriend that throws her phone? Fraud would be if you said you lost your phone just to have 2 phones. I would like a better explanation please.

Rom flash error?

I was flashing the Energy Rom and I received and error when it was trying to install the kernel. I tried again, same thing. Foolishly, I rebooted instead of restoring. Now my phone won't turn on, led is off when plugged in. Looks dead. I plugged into my PC and it finds new hardware (which I think is a good sign), it is referring to my phone as QHSUSB_DLOAD. Also, when I hold the power down it seems to try to reboot as the computer finds the new hardware again. I tried with the volume up, home, and power same response, also volume down, home, and power, same response. My phone was successfully rooted prior to this and running perfectly. I made a nandroid back up prior to flash. Not sure what to do at this point. Please advise!! Thank you all in advance. I am using T-Mobile too.
Looks like I am bricked from what I have been reading. Phone is under 2 weeks old...can I send it back or should I just report it lost at this point and pay $130 and have a new phone in a day?
Called insurance and told them I lost the phone. Hopefully there will be a fix for this in the future and I will have a backup phone that I can sell.
you hardbricked it....lol. Even if a fix comes out carriers are now blacklisting lost&stolen phones.

Edited.
Carriers have been doing that for a long time. Go LOL at your face, dude was asking advice you ****head. Realistically he could have just called T-Mobile and say the device wouldn't turn on, justifying a free warranty exchange.
Hey I actually had the same problem. I bought my phone from Craigslist and didn't know if I could go through T-Mobile for exchanging. I researched this problem for the Galaxy S2 and other Samsung devices, and I read that people sent their devices into Samsung and got it fixed. I decided to do the same; I called Samsung and explained my problem to the rep. She emailed me a UPS label for the phone, and I sent it in. They replaced my phone with a new unit, and it should be back tomorrow.

[Q] Broken Power Button, Jig doesn't work

I have a sprint epic touch (GS2) that had jellybean the newest update from Samsung for the device.
The power button was going out on it and I tried fixing and breaking it off... To small for me to solder back on.
So I ordered a JIG from amazon, works GREAT on my tmobile vibrant and my sprint galaxy s 4, but won't work on my S2.
It's charged to almost full battery, Any ideas to get it to turn on so I can root it? I searched the forum and saw if I rooted it back to older version the jig would work... But the only reason I have a JIG is to power it on, but it didnt work, so other then replacing the power button any ideas? Thanks
Unfortunately with the new bootloader the jig will not boot you up to recovery without pushing the power button. You can Google mobile tech videos. They have a power button repair service. I am also able to replace power buttons as well. It is fixable as long as you didn't break any pads or completely ruin the traces to the pads.

Thanks, I know I can send it in to them, just wasn't wanting to spend the money, it has a broken screen, and they dont fix that Eh (I'm sure I can do that myself)
Why is it only on the G2 that the boat loader was changed? My G4 the usb jig works.
I think they might. Not sure. It is really easy to replace the screen. I am not entirely sure... Ever since the official JB release, a jig will not force the phone to power on. I have an idea that it has something to do with preventing people from rooting. I downgraded my bootloader though, so I have no issues.

I thought a straight up battery pull/replace turned the phone on with the new Boot loader. Have you given that a try?
Edit: also, the app nomoarpowah from chainfire keeps the phone in a shutdown state with a scheduled or a "reboot now" button on screen, so that may help with not having a power button. Needs root, but who doesn't have that?

If you don't have insurance coverage and are out of warranty, you can replace the switch yourself. Several eBay sellers offer replacement power switches for the Epic Touch for about ten bucks.
Or, if you don't have mad soldering skills, you can ship it out to get fixed. A few sellers offer mail-in repair service:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sprint-Epic-4G-Touch-FIX-POWER-SWITCH-Samsung-Button-SERVICE-/151047295293
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Button-Repair-Samsung-Galaxy-S-Galaxy-S-II-Galaxy-NOTE-MORE-/320910836052
Replacing the switch is probably much like replacing a USB port. This shows how to replace your microUSB port without a fancy de-soldering station or hot air pencil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao5T9_XcCrU

Really could use your help!

So I'm not new by any means to xda or fixing electronics of any sort so I'd not be here asking for ALL possibilities of assistance I can get. .. Throw any possible solution you can my way as it can't hurt to try most ideas.
I'm working on my brothers SPRINT model galaxy S3. This thing is in pristine condition never dropped always in his Otterbox.
It will not power on so I cannot get into download mode however I can, if I finagle it enough get glimpses of the screen flashing on so I can see the battery icon for 5 seconds like it wants to power on
He bought a brand new battery direct from Samsung yet when plugged in via Samsung Wall charger nothing. .. No charging light zilch. If I try the USB charger that came with it nothing either.
No lights. No powering on. No way to get into download mode to try to bring it back from literally working before going to bed then he said he woke up and it was like a brick.
Any idea if there is a way to get this working again seeing that I get no power at all?
Thanks

I'd have to agree with @MIKEY309 on this one. It sounds like a power button issue. I would think you'd have at the least a charging light, because even when it's powered off it displays a charging battery on the screen. Jigs are cheap and easy, and good to have on hand, so I say give that a shot, at least, and if that doesn't work, then go the button route. Good luck!

It must likely is the power button, but try pulling the battery out & give it about ten minutes… put the battery back in & try powering it back up. I know it sounds stupid but give it a try, I had something like this happen to me before & this worked for me. Good luck.
Jessooca said:
Thanks guys, I was actually pretty sure it was the ever so infamous failed power switch on the board, which everything I have done and tried suggests so. I just thought perhaps maybe there was a possibility it could be fixable without having to get that power switch replaced.
I can slap it against my leg and voila, it always vibrates and attempts to power on, sometimes It'll stay powered on, I did get it into download mode and used a stock firmware file to Odin it back to stock, my only concern is that darn Custom Binary Trip counter now, I may just find a local shop to see if they'll replace it for less than $50 I am also considering buying a bad esn/ or cracked screen Sprint SIII to swap out the boards with, unless someone has one to donate. For now though I'll be without a phone until I can afford to get it replaced.
Thanks again!
