When I first got my phone I looked up some info on rooting. It seemed at the time that Wifi wouldn't work properly. I have spotty 3g coverage so I need Wifi to work properly.
Are there currently any issues to rooting and/or installing custom roms on the ET4G?
Been rooted since I bought it. No issues. Everything works beautifully. Currently running Cauklin's 2.01 EK02 based ROM and loving it.
Once you have been immersed in the "root & overclock" you will find that it provides more gain than headache. I have problems everytime I try something new untilled I learn some quirks and how to overcome the new problem. If you do root & oc first and foremost create a Complete Backup of all the stock data from your phone onto a computer that is untampered with so if all else fails you can flash back to right after gaining root. In which case you can UnRoot your phone and then perform a factory flash.
Just a few things that make it worthwhile...
BATT LIFE went from one day with my normal usage of web, calls, games,extra... I had to topoff in the car midday. Rooted, I use an app that has a "NITROUS" setting which when I hit the lil button my phone clock ramps up to the Max... but for doing my regular activities I actuly have my phone down clocked alot and do not see any performance issues with anything.
Also when my phone is in my pocket it downclocks even further for standby. 1200 is stock.
1600-max overclock for dl
(I do not use 1200 i have mine set on 800)
800-daily activities
200-screenoff
( I Max it out for streaming movies or dl of big files)
Not to mention all of the customization for you with roms and being able to remove stock apps ect...
Here is a good starting point.... root phone create a backup... flash a new kernel that allows over and underclocking set up a screen on off profile with oc app. Remove any stock apps you don't want and see from a "stock os" with the phone if you notice a difference. If you don't unroot and rock it stock.
Staying active in forums and never try a rom or kernel that is labled beta.

On a side note I am below 15% batt life for about 8hrs now and still using normally just not using my nitrous setting.

How do I overclock my phone. I am running the caukulin 2.0.1 rom with the rogue kernel. i tried everything but the max i can go is 1.2ghz which is stock i want to go to 1.6ghz what am i not doing.
Downside to rooting phone....being addicted to said rooted phone.

I personally like rooting and messing with my phone, it's fun.
My wife hates it because she doesn't care about custom this and that.
Root = fun
Unroot = your phone as intended
Are you a phone junky, then root for sure with caution.
Are you not, then stick with stock, your phone horse power has enough to keep you going.
Note: For me, everything working great. I've had some problem but nothing I couldn't fix within a day here on XDA Forum. Btw, I'm a noob compared to most here on xda.
Well JC I personally like a totally blank canvas to work with... here are some things I just do not use
Google anything be it Maps, Navigation, Books, gmail, Latitude, ect ...
Sprint TV, Radio, ect...
Calander
YouTube
Voice anything
Most all of the apps I just use the internet and save my webpages...
Yahoo mail, Gmail, Facebook, ect...
So with a Stock Phone what ill do is root, create my "Stock Backup" and save that zip on my phone AND my PC. Then al of the ROMs I am untreated in I will load to my PC and push the zip to my phone one at a time. Try them out to find the one I like the most. Once I find a winner I will add back the things I do use the most if the rom doesn't have them alrdy.
To me my camera is a good check of a rom... most of the time if the camera works fine then the rest usually is good. After camera I try to send a pic via text msg. Both working then I explore the rom for any other instabilities I might have read about in the post of said rom.
In theroy the more free space on a phone means it will run processes faster in theroy.
Apps I do use:
Quadrent Standard
Linepack
Speed Test
For my OC I like CPU Benchmark by unstable apps & CPU Boost by conap
Jrummy has a onestop toolbox I also recommend.
Just a last thought... dl different Free overclock apps to find one you like then purchase the one that works for you.

So the app I use for my overclock is named CPU BOOSTPRO in the market... in the settings is where I set up my oc and down clock. The rom & kernel screen shots also.

So this has the nitrous widget in the top right and just the CPU boost pro widget in the top left. The android is my task killer widget.

I am trying to figure out the best setting for the rom. I am only getting like 6 to 8 hours on my phone. When I've seen others get close to 24 with light to moderate use. Like I stated in the Title The rom is Dewizzed 2.0, and I know the some people have the same rom while using tuner pro. I would ask the dev in the devolpment section, but I don't have permissions to do so. Also Hello everyone in xda. I am a long time visitor since the G1 days. I made this account a long time ago, but recently got tired of touchwiz, and decided to give it the boot lol.
from what I have heard... for dewizzed... if you use Faux, just flash gideon's script you might want to bump the clock just a bit over 1ghz to make it smoother... i believe synergy kernel works really well with dewizzed from the getgo (haven't tried it i get good results from faux).... if using gideon's script.. don't use a cpu tuner, you want to manually adjust the values in the script.

See this is where I seen people on here talk about scripts. While yes I hear great things about it. I'm pretty stupid in to what it it, does, or how to apply lol. As to say why My idiot self uses setcpu, but apparently setcpu gets stuck on conservative which was creating a noticeable lag. Which in turn lead me to tuner pro. Which in turn leads me to look for the appropriate settings I want. Just don't know how to achieve that. Things sure have changed since the G1. -sigh- Sorry if I'm more of a pain in the bottom. :\

scripts are basically tweaks to your phone. They're PreProgrammed tweaks that runs when your phone is booted.
Basically gideon's script controls your phone's clockspeed and voltages without the need of a 3rd party app. Therefore when running tuner pro it overrides the script... go to faux's kernel thread... it's in the 3rd post. You flash the script through cwm.. check out synergy's thread for its own configuration.. i haven't really checked it out yet (i should)... heard great things about that kernel
Here is a link to Gideon's scripts. Before you flash them uninstall system tuner, and wipe cache and dalvik. I suggest putting the revert script on your sd card also. In case your phone doesnt like being under volted. You can boot into recovery and flash the revert script.

I am running Dewizzed 2.0 with Synergy kernel and using System Tuner Pro, 1.62max 384min, 384max and 192min with screen off and am not UV because Synergy is already UV. Getting well over 21 hours of use, light to moderate usage,
Sounds like you have a app that is using a lot of battery.

Nope cpu spy shows how much time the phone is in different mhz.. like if you turn off your screen it will go into deepsleep and when you open the app it indicates how much time the phone has spent into deep sleep...
And OP maybe its a bad battery if you have tried ics roms and jb ?

I really like the CodenameAndroid and ParanoidAndroid roms in combination with Ktoonz kernel, I get around 2 days of battery with moderate usage and over 6 hours screen time, which IMO is great for the US S3

holy sh*t the android system is raping your battery, well I love wicked roms(ICS) awesome battery and super smooth. You can also check out FrostyICS and FrostyJB those are also really good ROM's. I personally like ICS ROM's as they are more stable and don't have minor issues that some the JB ROM's have.
Check out post #3112 and #3113 in the WickedV7 thread and check out the battery life pic people posted on that ROM.
GO to the Play store and download no-frills CPU control or set cpu and check and see what you Min and max is for your CPU.
I have an extended battery and after 4 hours i was at 65 or 70% which is way off!!! I check this and it showed that my min and max was at 1024 once I changed the min to 384 everything got better

When it comes to battery life, there are many thing that you can do to improve it.
First off, turn autobrightness off, and try and keep the brightness slider as low as comfortably possible.
Dark, if not completely black background are not only sick looking, but they help with your battery life.
Less widgets, especially ones that require frequent updates...like weather widgets, and facebook widgets will wake
your system up to update. I suggest removing most, if not all of your widgets from your home screens.
Download an app like setcpu, nstools, or voltage control to set your min and max frequencies. In setcpu, make some profiles for screen off to
make sure your system isn't throttling up while your phone is not in use.
Change your governor and i/o schedulers. With a high end device like this, you can comfortably sit on conservative governor without experiencing bad lag...i/o schedulars wont effect battery life too too much but simple ones are best (like sio).
Run v6 super charger, kickass kernalizer, and 3 script to improve the way your device runs, and battery life. Stick to wifi when possible. Having low signal will cause your phone to constantly look for a better signal which will prevent it from deep sleeping.
Use titanium backup to freeze unnecessary processes, such as DRM protected content.
Download one powerguard to help also.
Good luck!

This was mentioned in another thread. DL this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eugene373.cpu.sleep
It shuts down one of your cores when the phone isn't in use.
Also DL CPUspy. This will show you exactly how often your phone is using certain frequencies, and whether or not it's going into deep sleep.
It looks from your screenshot however that your standby battery is not the problem, it seems to shoot down when in use (at least I'm assuming that was from when you were using the device).
Click on "System" and take a screenshot so we can see what's going on
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Error is the first thing listed. Have you tested the battery by doing a full reset and flash, then not installing any apps? If this is happening across roms and builds its most likely one of your apps not playing well with the system.
Before your next flash, go into dev options and turn on Show CPU Usage. Then let us know what processes seem to stay at the top all the time.
Also get cpu spy from the market and after letting it collect its data for a while (especially when not using the phone) check it to make sure its going into deep sleep.
After those two, do your clean flash and run without installing any apps for a while. Then when you do install them, do not restore from a backup. Download them fresh from the market. Also do not restore any backed up data, at least at first.
When you do flash your system, download the full firmware to your computer (use root66 if you want to keep root). From recovery choose format data, this will wipe your internal sdcard, btw.
Now boot into download mode and using Odin, flash the firmware you just downloaded.
Once done charge back to 100% and see how it goes.
You can get the firmware from my stickied thread in development.

As long as you follow instructions, and make sure you have the correct fw for your model, Odin is actually quite easy to use.
Restoring apps and especially data can cause all kinds of issues when jumping between different builds and especially android versions. The updated apos and system often have different database structures, different data files, and even different storage locations sometimes.
I'm betting this is where the problem will be.
I understand not wanting to go through all that I mentioned, but if you want to know where the problem originates, you have to start removing variables to narrow it down.
If you don't care what's causing it, jump to the flash. Nandroid backup, wipe everything, odin flash, test. If all is well, restore the data part of nandroid. If problems start again then you know its either your apps or data causing the problem.
Odin instructions are in TheExels thread stickied in this section.

This post only pertains to Jellytime Sosei/BakedBean 4.1.2 and is for users experiencing problems with their A100, yours may not. This thread is not to debate or argue about the kernels, please keep that in mind
Hey guys, I was originally testing these ROMs for pio, and constantly am changing or tweaking things on the ROM to find what suits our A100 best. Pio was building these blind, so he has no way to thoroughly test the ROMs and such things as build.prop mods/tweaks as well as kernels.
Let me start by saying this, I AM IN NO WAY BASHING ANY DEVELOPER FOR THEIR WORK. I AM IN NO WAY BLAMING OR STATING THAT ANY BUGS/FLAWS ARE A DIRECT RESULT OF THEIR WORK. THE THINGS I AM LISTING ARE ISSUES/PROBLEMS/BUGS THAT I HAVE OBSERVED OR ENCOUNTERED, AND ALL BUGS/FLAWS WERE TESTED AGAINST THEIR EQUAL. EXAMPLE, USING THE godmachine81/linuxsociety KERNEL, THAN REPRODUCING THE SAME ENVIRONMENT, I WOULD RUN THE STOCK KERNEL FOR TESTING AND VERIFYING THE ERROR.
Kernel Observation:SODsEveryone, including myself, tend to automatically flash linuxsociety's GodMachine kernel v2.0, as it really is our only option for JellyBean/CM10/AOSP based ROMs. We do have ezTerry's kernel, but it has not "supposedly" been tweaked for 4.1.x systems. Although it is the base for GodMachine kernels. I've never used ezTerry's kernel, but I may test it like I've been testing GodMachine.
Anyways, for this ROM, I have found that the godmachine kernel performs poorly on Sosei ROM. With GodMachine kernel, I had tons of issues with constant BSOD/SOD. (Sleep of Death) The SODs were worse if you left wireless on, and the SODs were completely random, no matter what I did, if the tablet fell aslepp, it SOD'd on me. Using the stock kernel pio packed with the ROM, resolved much of this issue for me. The only time I have SOD on the stock kernel is when Wifi was left on, and the chances of this happening were 99% LESS LIKELY compared to GodMachine. You can combat this, by sacrificing battery life and using an app that's free on the playstore, WakeLock. If you choose to go this route, the "Partial_Wake_Lock" option consumes the least amount of battery while still preventing SOD. None of the 3 options for forcing wireless to stay on worked for stopping SOD.
RANDOM REBOOTS/CRASHING/FREEZINGI myself did not have many issues with random reboots, but I did have some issues with random app "force closes" and freezing to the point where you'd have the almost force close I call it, where you get an option to close or wait for the app. I have not had this issue using the stock kernel, unless related to the next topic...
GPU/VIDEO INSTABILITY/ODDITIESI, as well as a few others, have reported issues with display. Most users have noticed an issue with flashing lines, tearing, and artifacts on the desktop. I have also had issues when play a THD/HD game, for example Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation HD, where anytime after about 20-30min, the display would become compltely distored, almost like when you were trying to pick up a TV station using rabbit ear antennas, and the game crashes/freezes, but you do not get an option to force close, so you have to use the Navigation bar HOME button to get yourself out of it, than you need to kill the game anyway you want, but if you don't kill it, it will load you back to that distorted, frozen image.
In the GodMachine kernel, the GPU is overclocked as well as being able to overclock your CPU, but you cannot adjust the GPU yourself with any application. Linuxsociety states: "Stable GPU Overclock @ 450mhz (scales from 300 - 450)"
I do not have these issues with video when using the stock kernel, nor do I notice any lack of GPU performance with lack of GPU overclocking.
In my honest opinion, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND the STOCK KERNEL. Yes it is lacking in some features, but it is capable of being overclocked as well if your interested in doing so. Using the interactive governor provides the smoothest performance and still retains some battery savings. Conservative, OnDemand, userspace, and Performance are offered as well. The I/O Scheduler only has NOOP available, but if you do some reading, NOOP is actually recommended for Flash Devices, like ours.
To get back to pio's stock kernel, you can boot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik, and dirty flash the ROM.
BUILD.PROP EDITINGI cannot even begin to tell you the amount of hours I invested in testing and editing the build.prop to obtain what I find to be the most stable while still possibly enhancing performance/responsiveness and battery life. I will link you to my FINAL build.prop mod for you to download if you'd like. In all reality this consisted of just commenting out several lines in the original build.prop that our A100 did not like. This will also fix issues with the video camera recording if you have them, as well as improve certain app and system performance and functions. I've also had more reliability and just odd **** happen when I use the TCP/IP buffer enhancement code lines so those have been commented out as well to keep WiFi stable. I really see no performance gains with them other than SpeedTest and there is a reason, I am a Networking IT Student, and don't feel like explaining that now in this thread. lol
Download build.prop.sosei__tweaked
Using a FileExplorer with ROOT LEVEL ACCESS (I recommend ESFileExplorer),
Copy build.prop.sosei__tweaked into the /system folder
Rename current build.prop to build.prop.bak
Rename build.prop.sosei__tweaked to build.prop
Reboot into recovery (TWRP or CWM) and wipe dalvik cache & cache, reboot
make sure you wait ten, reboot and wait 5-10 before you start using your tablet
This is all in my observed, hands-on testing and experience, and everyone's results will vary based upon factors such as user setup, apps install, the way a user even uses their tablet etc
I hope this might help/inform some of you guys.
Very nice, thanks for taking the time to put this together for the users. How did that kernel I built for you do?

I'm using/testing this rom along with gm's kernel. I have not had wake SOD issue. It sometime takes a couple if clicks on the power button for it to wake, not sure if this is the issue you're referring to as SOD. Everything seems to work great so far. Netflix, audio, headphone all work well. I have always wanted some aokp flavor on this tab, and now that wish is granted thanks to the awesome work of pio, bb devs and gm.

No, I had sod constantly. But not slow wake up. I get slow wake sometimes on stock, but atleast it will wake.
Everyone's tablet is not the same, some hate the GM kernel.
Mine seems to be one of those, but had I known how smooth and stable the stock kernel was, I prob would have stopped using GM awhile ago, I've had nothing but issues with it, if you've seen any of my old posts over last couple of months.

Other than a couple of SOD's I haven't had any other issues with the gm kernel. I have since bumped up the minimum speed to 312 Mhz and that has seemed to fix the SOD issue but I still need more time to conclude that. I'm also getting some impressive quadrant scores with it too (3046) and that's with a fully loaded non-tweaked system. The only reason I like the gm kernel is the variety of I/O schedulers and governors...there is absolutely nothing wrong with the stock kernel. I'm still very happy with the JB ROM, I have it set up almost identical to my Samsung Nexus phone which makes it very convenient.
GM SOD Issue Resolved ( For Me)
I can now safely say after 4 days of testing that raising my minimum speed in the GM kernel to 312 Mhz has completely eliminated the SOD issues. I know that every device acts differently but this is working on mine!

I didn't want to do that myself and lose the extra battery juice.
The point is it should be able to UC down to 216 and hold there with no issues.
The stock kernel does it perfectly well with no ill effects.
I have a modified Godmachine kernel that is unreleased and I will be testing it soon.

thanks for the tweaks and info! buti have never encountered a SOD. what happens? it just wont wake up after sleeping? if it happens can you just turn off your tablet by holding the power button or do you have to wait for it to die?

SoD is just a failure to resume from sleep, reset button or hold power will reset it to normal. Some tegra2 devices have it, some don't, even among the same series, like a100s. The best way to combat it is to not sleep, but of course battery sucks.

I can understand not wanting to lose the extra battery juice, lots of what we do is to extend it. I did however undervolt the 315 slot to the same as the 216 (750 mV) so there's no addition battery drain. It's a win-win situation! Let us know how the unreleased version works out, I'm always looking for options.
Can you not dowloadd this from your tab? When I tried it said the download was unsuccessful

hi everyone,
just a quick question, did a search on hear & couldnt find the issue at hand so thought i'd post a thread as this has been annoying me for a while.
My battery temp ranges between 30c when doin nothing and 40, with 3g & gps on when traveling. Even if cold outside & about 18c in the car my phone regularly chirps up saying "warning your battery is overheating" it also does this whilst on charge sometimes even with the screen off.
Is 40 degrees too hot? can I turn the warning off? I am using osimood Rom can I reset the calibration of the temperature setting.
I have a plastic cover over the top but the phone is never too hot to hold just feels warm in the hand like most do, but none of my other phones do this.
I've tried a different battery which was worse probably because it was an eBay knock off, now I've order a mugen battery in the hope of fixing it. can't see anything in settings to stop this warning.
Any assistance appreciated as its driving me mad. Enough for me to tape the phone top the roof of the car to shut it up whilst navigating lol.
ATB
No idea... I've had my battery that warm and no warning at all.
Have you tried different ROMs? Something AOSP based maybe?
Thank you for your input is there any app that can change the alarm state or level of temperature on a rooted glide, I have under clocked the device which has helped, there is a performance hit but worth it to stop the incessant warning of battery overheating at 40 deg c.
Thanks
Depending on the kernel you're using you may not need to underclock it, you would do better to underVOLT it. That's what I did to reduce the temperature while keeping the performance. How far you can undervolt is a trial and error thing, and there are no major risks involved. Your phone may freeze or reboot due to instability when the voltages are too low, but that's it!
My phone has been pretty hot sometimes, but never that hot that I got a warning. Nevertheless, undervolting has brought the temperature down. My phone gets hottest when using it as a sat-nav, it stays pretty cool the rest of the time.

Thanks for te input, how can i change voltage i have tried voltage control apk which i had for another device but i can't see voltage just cpu control. Is there an apk that can control Osimood roms voltage anywhere.
Thanks all
40 C is alright - keep in mind, this phone draws more juice (hence the reason battery's labeled for 1.65 Amps / hour).
50 C is where you should be very cautious (just pop the cover off to be sure as the battery in my phone remains cool even when the Battery Protector warned me of 50 C overheat) - 55 C or 60 C (as checked by infrared thermometer looking at the battery) is very dangerous for Lithium : Cobalt Oxide battery.
EDIT: Try CPU Tweaks app from 3C. I had to use this app on my CM10 JB firmware ROM.

Hi thanks for the advise, cpu tweaker says there is no voltage module installed and do so to adjust settings. Can any one advise where I could find this module & can I just install from cwr menu as an update. I am not to
Going to increase voltage as I need to lessen it to reduce battery heat, as when this battery his 40 deg all the alarm bells start going off and it's very annoying. Never goes above 43 deg I can't find an app installed that's triggering the alarm so the system must be set to go off at 40.
Big thanks for all the help so far but I'm not there yet. LoL
Try Ardatdat's Gingerbread overclocking kernel as it's bound to have voltage module inside - underclock it to either 1 GHz or 800 MHz and set your desired voltage settings. I will find the link for this kernel (it won't modify your Osimood ROM except for a free bonus, data counter for some data traffic counter apps like Onavo).

Thank you so much for your help that would be great.
Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21907329 - you can also try other OC kernels advertisated for Android 2.3.5 / 2.3.7 Gingerbread.
Sent from the jar of Jelly Beans
Thanks for that but it didn't work, will it installed ok in crw I had to take out the battery for it to reboot as it hung on crw soft reboot, all loaded software wise in android but none of the tweaks can see voltage saying still a module to adjust voltage. The zip shows install was ok can I test within android to confirm correct installation.
Many thanks.
Odd. Did you check MD5 checksums and reflashed that? It shouldn't softbrick. You should leave it alone when updating kernel as it will be done checking everything within 5 - 10 minutes. (of course, wipe cache and dalvik cache - you don't have to perform factory reset.)

Hi thanks, I hadn't wiped caches so I will try that, doesn't wooing cash reset that app back to defaults again? Do I lose anything wiping these caches.
Thanks
No. You won't lose anything wiping those cache. Factory reset does wipe everything.

Thank you for your kindness, but still no go - wiped caches installed zip file all ok, rebooted into android all went ok, tried cpu tweak & voltage
Control but says please install voltage module interface??
I'll try an earlier version from the link you gave to see if that works. Are there any other modules I can try.
Thanks
Hm. I will have to try and search a bit more. Are you sticking with Gingerbread or moving to Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Beans in some point? (Just asking as later OSes already have Voltage modules in most kernels.)

Yes good question, this Rom works very well for me apart from this issue, I'm not after all the bells and whistles just something that works and this does seem to as a whole. I would like to keep the Rom if possible but if I have to I have too but I'll live with it for as long as possible. If there is a way to alter this to see and adjust voltage that would be fantastic.
Atb
Alright, I will try and keep looking, even though development on Gingerbread might have been stopped a while back - I have updated my phone to CyanogenMod 10 Jelly Beans and Covenant RC3 kernel (my phone stay cool even at insane speed of 1.4 GHz - undervolted the whole thing).
Covenant kernel definitely have voltage module, the only issue is that it's not for Gingerbread. Nevertheless there are few that you can try if you want to ditch Gingerbread. No pressure.

Thank you, yes would like to keep it if possible, as I need it for work and everything else is up and running. So the thought off testing back to a new Rom. But of need must of you can't find any what is a good stable Rom as they are a few of them out there.
I see. That's understandable. You can try reading through thegreatergood's LiteROM as this is an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM - it should be stable by now. Only you can make the decision.
