[Q] downsides to rooting & roms? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

When I first got my phone I looked up some info on rooting. It seemed at the time that Wifi wouldn't work properly. I have spotty 3g coverage so I need Wifi to work properly.
Are there currently any issues to rooting and/or installing custom roms on the ET4G?

Been rooted since I bought it. No issues. Everything works beautifully. Currently running Cauklin's 2.01 EK02 based ROM and loving it.

Once you have been immersed in the "root & overclock" you will find that it provides more gain than headache. I have problems everytime I try something new untilled I learn some quirks and how to overcome the new problem. If you do root & oc first and foremost create a Complete Backup of all the stock data from your phone onto a computer that is untampered with so if all else fails you can flash back to right after gaining root. In which case you can UnRoot your phone and then perform a factory flash.
Just a few things that make it worthwhile...
BATT LIFE went from one day with my normal usage of web, calls, games,extra... I had to topoff in the car midday. Rooted, I use an app that has a "NITROUS" setting which when I hit the lil button my phone clock ramps up to the Max... but for doing my regular activities I actuly have my phone down clocked alot and do not see any performance issues with anything.
Also when my phone is in my pocket it downclocks even further for standby. 1200 is stock.
1600-max overclock for dl
(I do not use 1200 i have mine set on 800)
800-daily activities
200-screenoff
( I Max it out for streaming movies or dl of big files)
Not to mention all of the customization for you with roms and being able to remove stock apps ect...
Here is a good starting point.... root phone create a backup... flash a new kernel that allows over and underclocking set up a screen on off profile with oc app. Remove any stock apps you don't want and see from a "stock os" with the phone if you notice a difference. If you don't unroot and rock it stock.
Staying active in forums and never try a rom or kernel that is labled beta.

On a side note I am below 15% batt life for about 8hrs now and still using normally just not using my nitrous setting.

How do I overclock my phone. I am running the caukulin 2.0.1 rom with the rogue kernel. i tried everything but the max i can go is 1.2ghz which is stock i want to go to 1.6ghz what am i not doing.

Downside to rooting phone....being addicted to said rooted phone.

I am curious ...what app are you referring to? Thanks
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

I personally like rooting and messing with my phone, it's fun.
My wife hates it because she doesn't care about custom this and that.
Root = fun
Unroot = your phone as intended
Are you a phone junky, then root for sure with caution.
Are you not, then stick with stock, your phone horse power has enough to keep you going.
Note: For me, everything working great. I've had some problem but nothing I couldn't fix within a day here on XDA Forum. Btw, I'm a noob compared to most here on xda.

Well JC I personally like a totally blank canvas to work with... here are some things I just do not use
Google anything be it Maps, Navigation, Books, gmail, Latitude, ect ...
Sprint TV, Radio, ect...
Calander
YouTube
Voice anything
Most all of the apps I just use the internet and save my webpages...
Yahoo mail, Gmail, Facebook, ect...
So with a Stock Phone what ill do is root, create my "Stock Backup" and save that zip on my phone AND my PC. Then al of the ROMs I am untreated in I will load to my PC and push the zip to my phone one at a time. Try them out to find the one I like the most. Once I find a winner I will add back the things I do use the most if the rom doesn't have them alrdy.
To me my camera is a good check of a rom... most of the time if the camera works fine then the rest usually is good. After camera I try to send a pic via text msg. Both working then I explore the rom for any other instabilities I might have read about in the post of said rom.
In theroy the more free space on a phone means it will run processes faster in theroy.
Apps I do use:
Quadrent Standard
Linepack
Speed Test
For my OC I like CPU Benchmark by unstable apps & CPU Boost by conap
Jrummy has a onestop toolbox I also recommend.
Just a last thought... dl different Free overclock apps to find one you like then purchase the one that works for you.

I was referring to the app with "Nitrous" boost. TIA
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

So the app I use for my overclock is named CPU BOOSTPRO in the market... in the settings is where I set up my oc and down clock. The rom & kernel screen shots also.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

So this has the nitrous widget in the top right and just the CPU boost pro widget in the top left. The android is my task killer widget.

And I hit that quadrent score at 1400 clock. I personally do not like how hot (heat wise) my phone gets at a 1600 oc.

I've been rooted for some time. Some kernels do have big LoS issues with this phone. My current combo is working VERY well, though. LoStKernelExp+ & viperROM. Fast and dependable.

[Q] setcpu on baked snack question.

So I'm running baked snack here and really beginning to enjoy it and this whole root thing. I've installed setcpu but every time I back out of the interface it goes down to 691 no matter how high I set it or on any profile. Does this not work with baked snack? Am I overlooking something or did I set it up wrong(I used auto detect when I started)?
Did you flash a different kernal?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Nope I flashed kernel 3 I think or what ever came included in the baked snack.
should I DL that kernel by itself and then flash over the Baked snack with it? and whats the difference between flash over and flash ontop of?
Damn the stupidity of it all... lol. I set my profile to 691 if my battery was under 40% which it was... but now when I plug my phone in the cpu goes up to 1ghz which I have it set to but my battery keeps going down. Now this is a problem here if I'm not able to charge my phone while the setcpu is running it will get really annoying really fast. Considering the app manager that I have refuses to close it so I have to manually go to settings > applications > manage applications then go to setcup and force close it to charge my phone it seems. Do you guys think its a problem with my cpu being set to high while charging should I drop it down a whole bunch for the charge process too? That doesn't seem like a very needed thing to do I would assume it would be able to charge just fine without that. Looks like I got a lot to learn about this whole rooted phone thing.
Check your profiles in setcpu and make sure you don't have one that's at that speed with the highest priority. If that all checks out fine I would flash kernal 2 (my favorite) don't wipe just flash. And as for your question over or on top they mean the same thing and that's flashing the kernal without wiping.

Also do you have overclock widget running as well? If so they might be fighting eachother

not even quite sure where the overclock widget is. I looked to see if setcpu had a widget and it wasn't in the widget menu. Where as most of my other installed apps have a widget assossiated with them. I'll look into kernel #2 right now, I still have some more flashing to do.

Overclock widget is just another widget you can download that runs seperatly from SetCPU. You should have a SetCPU widget though. I would try reinstalling SetCPU also

[Q] KT747 Kernel Help

Alright so I am using KT747 Kernel with Ktoonservative/Noop, 1512-384mhz, screen off 486mhz. I was given an option to Lock frequencies which disallows apps to modify the speed. However I noticed after I checked this some of my apps started crashing. I want good battery life (forget to mention I undervolted) and want to know if locking frequencies is what is making the apps crash. Any help would be great, and feel free to post some good settings for the kernel for optimal battery life with pretty decent clock speeds as well. Thanks again.
If your apps crash it is more likely to be caused by your undervolting.
And for the setting go there:

Yeah I read your post earlier in that thread and was using your settings. I've come across a newer problem, my phone randomly reboots. I don't know what was causing this so I restored default settings.
When you change kernel or kernel setting it is usual that your phone may need a few reboots before stabilizing
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Unlock the frequencies and run the app that causes the reboot. If it doesn't reboot that was the problem. More likely its too much under volt. The table in the link is some pretty severe undervolting. 740 is a long way down from the stock 925. That's great if your phone can handle it, but can cause problems if it can't. Piece of advice, never use any set on boot settings if your not sure it will. You may find yourself in a bootloop and have to reflash the kernel to get out of it.

I doubt locking the frequencies has anything to do with your reboot problems, this simply dissallows any apps that are capable to override the voltage settings for any particular frequency step. In fact, unchecking this may actually give you a false positive of it 'fixing' the problem when it is actually just using the default (or higher) voltages, burning up more battery in the process. As mentioned by jethro and liltitiz its more likely your UV settings, keep playing with them until you find the happy spot (works on other things too....:silly.

Or just move the ktweaker apk from the /system/app directory from a recovery based file manager. This will keep it from launching on startup and then can either be moved back or ran to reinstall. This way you dont have to cleark the dalvik cache, which should be done any time a kernel is installed, eliminating the extra long boot time when this is done. Either the built in TWRP explorer or the Aroma File Manager which can be 'flashed' in recovery. It doesn't actually flash anything, just unpacks, runs, and then is dumped from memory on reboot...very handy if you dont have TWRP or can't get into android.

[Q] Horrible battery life

ive tryed everything. android system is always higher than screen no matter what i flash, ics or jb. this is just getting annoying how it drops 1% every 2 minutes, when using it with data. i really like this phone but this is just killing it for me. i attached some pics of the battery and the kernel wakes. any help would be great.
thanks
WOW, that is crazy. I can only suggest Wicked V7 updated to the latest official ICS. Do a full wipe of everything and install. I have been running for 2 days and have great battery.

idk what it can be I've been switching roms and ics or not android system is always higher than screen . Could it be an app or a file that's causing this?

Nope cpu spy shows how much time the phone is in different mhz.. like if you turn off your screen it will go into deepsleep and when you open the app it indicates how much time the phone has spent into deep sleep...
And OP maybe its a bad battery if you have tried ics roms and jb ?

Well, what do you guys think of this? I'm new to the S3 not familiar with the ROMS. What's the best ROM out there for us with good battery life and performance?
I really like the CodenameAndroid and ParanoidAndroid roms in combination with Ktoonz kernel, I get around 2 days of battery with moderate usage and over 6 hours screen time, which IMO is great for the US S3

holy sh*t the android system is raping your battery, well I love wicked roms(ICS) awesome battery and super smooth. You can also check out FrostyICS and FrostyJB those are also really good ROM's. I personally like ICS ROM's as they are more stable and don't have minor issues that some the JB ROM's have.
Check out post #3112 and #3113 in the WickedV7 thread and check out the battery life pic people posted on that ROM.
GO to the Play store and download no-frills CPU control or set cpu and check and see what you Min and max is for your CPU.
I have an extended battery and after 4 hours i was at 65 or 70% which is way off!!! I check this and it showed that my min and max was at 1024 once I changed the min to 384 everything got better

When it comes to battery life, there are many thing that you can do to improve it.
First off, turn autobrightness off, and try and keep the brightness slider as low as comfortably possible.
Dark, if not completely black background are not only sick looking, but they help with your battery life.
Less widgets, especially ones that require frequent updates...like weather widgets, and facebook widgets will wake
your system up to update. I suggest removing most, if not all of your widgets from your home screens.
Download an app like setcpu, nstools, or voltage control to set your min and max frequencies. In setcpu, make some profiles for screen off to
make sure your system isn't throttling up while your phone is not in use.
Change your governor and i/o schedulers. With a high end device like this, you can comfortably sit on conservative governor without experiencing bad lag...i/o schedulars wont effect battery life too too much but simple ones are best (like sio).
Run v6 super charger, kickass kernalizer, and 3 script to improve the way your device runs, and battery life. Stick to wifi when possible. Having low signal will cause your phone to constantly look for a better signal which will prevent it from deep sleeping.
Use titanium backup to freeze unnecessary processes, such as DRM protected content.
Download one powerguard to help also.
Good luck!

This was mentioned in another thread. DL this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eugene373.cpu.sleep
It shuts down one of your cores when the phone isn't in use.
Also DL CPUspy. This will show you exactly how often your phone is using certain frequencies, and whether or not it's going into deep sleep.
It looks from your screenshot however that your standby battery is not the problem, it seems to shoot down when in use (at least I'm assuming that was from when you were using the device).
Click on "System" and take a screenshot so we can see what's going on
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Error is the first thing listed. Have you tested the battery by doing a full reset and flash, then not installing any apps? If this is happening across roms and builds its most likely one of your apps not playing well with the system.
Before your next flash, go into dev options and turn on Show CPU Usage. Then let us know what processes seem to stay at the top all the time.
Also get cpu spy from the market and after letting it collect its data for a while (especially when not using the phone) check it to make sure its going into deep sleep.
After those two, do your clean flash and run without installing any apps for a while. Then when you do install them, do not restore from a backup. Download them fresh from the market. Also do not restore any backed up data, at least at first.
When you do flash your system, download the full firmware to your computer (use root66 if you want to keep root). From recovery choose format data, this will wipe your internal sdcard, btw.
Now boot into download mode and using Odin, flash the firmware you just downloaded.
Once done charge back to 100% and see how it goes.
You can get the firmware from my stickied thread in development.

As long as you follow instructions, and make sure you have the correct fw for your model, Odin is actually quite easy to use.
Restoring apps and especially data can cause all kinds of issues when jumping between different builds and especially android versions. The updated apos and system often have different database structures, different data files, and even different storage locations sometimes.
I'm betting this is where the problem will be.
I understand not wanting to go through all that I mentioned, but if you want to know where the problem originates, you have to start removing variables to narrow it down.
If you don't care what's causing it, jump to the flash. Nandroid backup, wipe everything, odin flash, test. If all is well, restore the data part of nandroid. If problems start again then you know its either your apps or data causing the problem.
Odin instructions are in TheExels thread stickied in this section.

improve gnex performance?

i have a feeling this phone is starting to show its age. it seems whenever i install more than 100 apps on this phone it just becomes laggy as hell. to the point where right now the keyboard doesn't even open until 10 seconds later and phone constantly make weird noises when using tune in radio or youtube. the phone is also so slow that it can't even run temple run 2 or any of the games that came out recently. im using xylon rom with trinity kernel for those wondering. i honestly cannot use this phone anymore without having to do a factory reset every month just to stop the lag.
this could be a sign that its time to get a new phone but for now is there anyway to improve performance at all? i already am using the fastest trinity kernel and i have tried multiple roms and all of them seems to lag after hitting 100 apps mark which is ridiculous.
Have you made sure that the phone is not running out of memory as that is what usually causes the slow problems...I too have a 100+ apps and little or no lag. Try a different kernel and Rom maybe u could also tweak the processor speeds and stuff to get your desired performance...
If I helped hit thx
«««««««CYANOGENMOD 10.1 and FRANCO KERNEL»»»»»»»»»
Flash stock factory ROM and do a full wipe.
If you want later then flash custom ROM which is "STABLE".
Then make sure you have enough free memory on your Nexus's internal memory to avoid the lags.
You actually can't improve your Nexus's performance any other way, tweaks speed up very much..
I have over 60 apps installed (usually apps that I need) and some games..
I have 1.4 GB free memory on My Nexus and I use some cleaner apps to get more free space and I don't have any lags..
I use stock ROM that I've modified and stock default kernel..
The hardware slows primarily because of software (apps). Once the hardware fails, it fails.
Check and reign in the number and frequency of apps that sync, update and or check in.
Are you syncing an email client and or keeping them on the device rather than say the Exchange server?

I have 276 apps on my Nexus and (perceived) performance is better than ever using XENON HD Stable-4.0 and the Franco kernel r364. For the latest update of the ROM, I decided to risk a dirty flash. I seem to have gotten away with it. Performance "feels" excellent, whatever that is worth. My last factory reset was about 2 months ago.
The ROM and kernel have a variety of performance tweaks. I wish there was a way to benchmark performance in a controlled fashion. I hate feeling and perception in the performance department.
On the new ROM, WiFI performance is now solidly pegged at my account's limit of 30 MBs. It was all over the map before, although I realize that many factors affect the Speed Test app.
The "seeder" app helped a lot for my device in reducing lag. The overall community is sharply divided about the effectiveness of the seeder: YMMV. Its worth trying, though. I've been using it for about 6 weeks. Other than the Google Play Store updates, I don't have lag any more. Before the seeder, I felt like you -- the phone was almost unusable.
Regarding the device feeling dated, this ROM supports the expanded desktop and the pie. Wow, the phone feels new again. No kidding.

I also observed that the apps that run sync/update/check in were slowing down the phone. Check for apps that have daemons associated with them. Decide whether its worth having.

[Q] Any way to speed up CM 10.1 or is there a liter ROM of it?

EDIT: *lighter, forgot to check spelling. Lol
So my Evo 3D has finally called it quits and I have one month left till I leave Sprint so my friend gave me this phone that he doesn't use any more. For such an old phone I really can't complain about it, compared to my Evo 3D which runs CM 10.1 too it never crashes, always has GPS, 3G, 4G working fine and the battery lasts me all day. So I'm in love. But my one and only issue is it is extremely slow. And no I will not leave CM 10.1 as I use Google Now very often but if their are huge differences/opportunities for huge differences I'll go down as low as CM 10 or a different 4.0+ ROM.
So I was wondering is there a lite version of CM 10.1, recommended kernels that support both overclocking and undervolting, can someone explain how to make a swap partition on the SD card, and so on, just any ways to free up RAM, speed up the CPU/GPU, and lighten the load of the OS.

"Light version": do it yourself with a root-enabled explorer. Google and you'll know what system apps can be deleted.
OC&UV kernel: Nitest maybe.
Swap: IDK
Free up RAM and speed up: I personally use Autostarts and Advanced Task Killer (Pro), but Greenify seems easier to use. You get ~80MB free RAM after a clean install, but can get 190~220MB after heavily using these. I don't use gapps so YMMV.

I've already deleted every system app I'm comfortable removing using Root Uninstaller. After having everything I have to have installed on the phone, with as many apps set to not run in the background that I can and Greenify helping too, I tend to have 10-70MB of RAM free, it tends to be 15-35MB free though. I don't use task killers since all they do is play cat and mouse and waste battery, and tried a few auto start managers but can't really get into using it with how complicated they are. Right now the main thing I want to figure out is getting a swap partition up and running since that sounds the most promising with how little RAM this phone has.
Did a backup and switched to the nitest-0721 kernel and so far it's doing good. Disappointed the OC only goes up to 1.2GHz but it's better than nothing (don't understand kernels that limit how much you can OC when it's up to you to find how much your phone can OC), hopefully I can find a way to get it to go higher, and the "voodoo color" is weird but I can install a different version of the kernel to remove that if my eyes don't adjust first. Anyways... my free RAM now stays between 100-200MB, usually about 160MB, with 18% zRAM, purging of assets, and samepage merging enabled which is amazing. Apps are opening faster and don't stutter anywhere near as much as before, so I'm happy but will see how things go tonight when I go to work and am playing with it on and off, along with need to find a way to really overclock it.

Try going with one of didhiy's nitest kernels and maybe a different AOSP ROM, like AOKP, PAC, etc. Or try out SuperNexus even. That's an extremely lightweight ROM with no customization options (Its straight up stock Android, just like a brand new Nexus phone), but its fast and quite stable from what I remember.

Or find one of didhiy's nutest kernels, those have live oc, more free ram, and i believe it goes to 1.4 GHz. I'm not sure though. But it is less stable than nitest

Well I've run this kernel for a week or so now with the smartassv2 governor and min/max at 100/1200MHz. Zero reboots unless I'm playing Minecraft the entire phone locks up other than the button lights, no matter what I do it crashes sooner or later but oh well I'm bored of that game just wanted to see if it'd play on this phone. ANYWAYS I've heard of it being done before but can't find any info on how to do it, how can I overclock past what the kernel allows (1.2GHz), I've seen reports of this phone handling 1.5GHz and want to see if I can reach 1.4.

The frequency is still limited by the kernel...
1.5GHz is history (too unstable and hot so that devs stopped including it), and only Gingerbread/ICS custom ROMs can get that frequency via flashing corresponding Sanders/Shadow/Samurai kernels and overvolting as well, which is definitely not good.

I just seriously hate kernels that limit how high you can overclock instead of making OC options to unreachable levels letting you find your phones limits. People make kernels, roms, hacks, etc so we can get around limitations that the hardware vendors put up. So if we've managed to circumvent the manufacturers blocks why are the same people that got around them making their own blocks, they already put up silly warnings about anything you install/do could break your phone but if you're going to give that warning it needs to be true. Anyways ending my rant lol...
I know their has to be a way to edit a kernel or file to add more options since the kernel creators can't do the job themselves, it's just finding out what and where these files are. Can anyone inform me on this and give me details on how this whole system of controlling clock speed works so it can be modded?

Uh, AFAIK, isn't these frequency decided only when the kernel is COMPILED (from source code)? I don't exactly know...
