Sprint to ATT mainboard swap - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm really unhappy with Sprint in my hometown I just moved back to. I put my old Atrix 4G on Net10 for $50/mo and ATT's HSDPA+ network blows Sprint away, even sprint LTE in Indiana.
My thoughts are to get a broken screened Note 2 ATT variant and swap out the motherboard. Correct me if I'm wrong but it should be a straight swap (including the back bezel for sim card). I'll keep my old SPR motherboard around in case the SIM card slot mod ends up working for US networks and as a backup. Think it'll work?
For clarification, this is in no way illegal as I'm not doing anything to the IMEI/ESN, I want to swap all internal circuitry, like a reverse screen swap.
Any blockers I should be aware of?

Why not just put ur screen on that housing since thats essentially what you'll be doing anyways. It should work since all the connectors are identical sizes and placement

ATT S3 Data Problem (Having my cake and eating it, too)

Several years ago I got a unique data plan for an off-contract Xperia X1A phone from ATT. It was the unlimited data for 'smartphones' for $15. My phone was not recognized by their system and I got unlimited 3G data.
A year or so ago, my Xperia broke down and I got an HTC Vision off-contract with ATT's 3G networks. It worked well and immediately connected to 3G.
The screen recently broke and while I've ordered a replacement, I realized it was getting a little long in the tooth so I decided to get an S3 with no contract from Amazon Wireless.
I sliced down my Sim card into micro size and it fit (yay) and the phone service works...
But no data. Not even 3G.
Halp?
Have you updated your APN's for the phone? I dont know the ATT APN's off hand but Im sure you can google them and find them right away
Here's the apn from my Att s3
You probably need to use wap.cingular

Ah - however, I only seem to be getting 3G speeds, not LTE speeds. Ah, that's a fair compromise.
I don't know if att is the same as rogers in Canada but I had to get a new lte sim card which would suck for you. I hope they never take your plan away.

Best I can tell, LTE needs a plan change. If you try to swap SIM cards, it still won't work. Worse, they'd detect you trying to connect to LTE and they may slam you to one of the new plans. Ask me how I know.
It's up to you to decide whether LTE is worth the price increase. Nice to be able to choose.
If you're feeling charitable, either XDA or Cyanogen seem appropriate.

This is correct. If you start using a LTE phone and don't have a LTE plan, you'll start getting texts and emails from AT&T asking you to contact them so they can update your plan. They'll probably give you a new micro sim, as your old cut down sim isn't LTE enabled.

Well... today they actually did upgrade me to the 3gig/$30 data plan. I called them and told them I was going to stop using this phone, return it, and go back to my non-smartphone. They put me back on the old data plan - but I'm not sure for how long.
I'm waiting on my screen replacement for the HTC Vision to arrive, in which case I'll see if they try to force the upgrade again. If they DO, I will again tell them to put it back and send back my S3 and go back to the HTC Vision.
I wonder, though, if there is some way to prevent them from knowing it is a Galaxy S3. Mybe if I bought one from Telus or Bell? My HTC Vision was not released for ATT and I got it from some Canadian company with the same network settings, I think.
Besides, if they are going to FORCE me onto the plan, I may as well take a subsidized phone.

I walked into the store with my backup - a moto F3 - and told them I lost my old sim card and needed a microsim. The rep wanted to test that it worked so I asked for some tape and taped it into place. I told him that the phone was foreign and used a rare sim size but a micro could work with tape. They bought it.
So I got home and put the new micro into the S3 and no data using the ATT APN but 3G using the Cingular. So let's see if they try to switch me back again.
REally wish I could get LTE on my current plan. Hmm.
I'm increasingly unhappy with this phone, though, and may end up returning it anyway.

GSM SIM card mode for Sptint Glaxy Note II?

Is any one brave enough to perform this mode on their new SGN II?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32593285#post32593285
I believe the little metal shield near the microSD slot is Sprint SIM-chip - it in the same spot as SIM slot on other versions of SGN II and it looks similar to the one in the above Motorola phone.
There is a dual SIM adaptor for this phone here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952770
so theoretically it could be used to split the connection with Sprint SIM-chip and another real full size SIM
I would love to see the same thing. I was thinking about moving to the Galaxy Note 2 until I read about the embedded SIM. I hope Sprint backs away from this trend or at least someone can hack the Note to allow for SIM switching.

You will not see a real SIM card if that is what you expect yo see - It's an ASIC microchip.
the "SIM-chip" is clearly visible one of the posted pictures:
http://imageshack.us/a/img259/1346/20121030103716.jpg
It is right next to the white letters SPH-L900
And as you can see it is almost the same as in Motorola Photon phone in the original thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32593285#post32593285
First picture on the right (also has 880120000 on top) - just a different version
That original thread has couple videos with removal procedure, it would be exactly the same here.
Darkendvoid88, Thank you for posting pictures!!!!!
Ah, thanks for the clarification. Very daunting but at least I know it's theoretically possible. If only this was more practical!
It appears that you'd have to have the phone taken apart just to use the foreign sim card, which is impractical. Maybe it could be stuffed below or above the battery, of course assuming the little wires could fit through some crevice or crack somewhere in the back. Otherwise, this type of hack basically just makes it possible to find your favorite foreign sim card, stick it in and close the device back up.
When I traveled around Germany and the UK this summer, it was super convenient to just switch to the new sim when I needed but I don't see that this will be possible even with this type of hack. Damn!
The op just has it set up like that because the photon is sealed and has a "non removeable" back. There is little to no room for the sim reader. An extended battery back might make this easier for us. Also if anyone has ever taken apart an S2 there is a clip next to the battery terminals. Ours is the same dissassembly process and that clip could be broken off to allow for easy wire routing.

Not too be noob-ish, but this is possible, right? Because if not I just wasted $300 :/

You can't simply replace the chip with SIM card slot. You will lose Sprint LTE. To make it right you's need to solder a dual SIM adapter instead of the chip, then solder chip back in to micro SIM slot of the adapter and use the regular SIM slot for other SIM you might want to use. The software that comes with an adaptor will help you switch between chip and the SIM

No u are exactly correct that chip controls sprint lte access but the good news is a secondary sim slot can be placed directly over it without much case modification you just have to wire it up and remove the metal block from the pcb cover Case also wireless charging is definitely in play due to the pcb is wired for it a lot of hardware modification promise

I am not a fan of the Iphone, but my wife has the 4s and I was able to call sprint to have them unlock the phone so we can use it overseas with another sim card. With that being said is the Iphone the only phone that has the slot to easily take out the card and replace it with another card if traveling overseas?
I wonder if the pcb boards or internals used in the Verizon version could be swapped out for Sprint? It would be pretty interesting if a Verizon version of this phone just required a transplant of the LTE sim chip.

I own this Photon and it worked well since it's unlocked for foreign sims but it won't see an update beyond 2.3 since Motorola won't upgrade it. GN2 is the phone I want to upgrade to but this embedded sim is my biggest problem with it.

Randy, Are you saying saying there is no need to remove the chip just solder wires from it's legs to SIM slot and switch with software?
Exactly someone would have to unlock it software wise but a simple soder hack and some super glue will allow it to be used directly on top of chip with wires straight to the right connections.. The chip cannot I repeat cannot be removed it manages the sprint frequency of lte and International roaming to remove it would take away ur ability to have lte but the positive is its not that locked down from what I'm hearing its a simple mod hardware wise. also the wireless hack is super super easy I don't understand why sprint left the tech for wireless charging in and routed correctly but removed the access to them. Go figure as soon as I get a device ill do some tinkering
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I have to tear it down again tomorrow when I get to the store as I screwed up the rubber grommet that goes around the headphone jack (covering the hole atm). So if you guys need any more pictures of the chip / insides I'd be happy to oblige.

You will need to be able to hardware mod the phone to accept a GSM sim on top of the hardwired chip.
You'll also need balls of steel.

The sprint note has no accessable sim slot. To "possibly" accomplish this one would need to modify the hardware by adding a sim slot and hack the software.
there is a thread about sone folks attempting this...i have not been following it.

in layman's terms, you can't. if you remove the back cover from your device there is no sim card slot on the sprint variant to insert a sim. the only current wait to use our phones abroad is to use the sprint international plan.
Got it

You could buy an AT&T Note to use with Straight Talk. I have one for sale on eBay right now (Note 1, not 2) that I bought for that same reason, but don't have coverage where I live to make it happen. http://www.ebay.com/itm/290826024805?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

$6.47 swap that plug and play component into place and BAM sim card slot.
either cut a hole in your middle cover OR buy a int middle cover.
also someone is working on a mod solution to keep the 4g AND add a sim card slot
we off course still need to unlock to work on US carriers but maybe its not locked to begin with since they would not have thought of someone swapping parts like this.

very cool. do you know if you can do a similar trick with the ebay sim card holders for the Galaxy S3 (i.e. L710) ? I'm really hoping to buy a sprint GS3, put it on ting, and be able to occasionally take it internationally.
I was about to buy a motorola photon, but the lack of updates is scaring me.

maybe it's just me, but amazing that so many people still believe that phones are compatible with other carriers............if you have Tmobile, AT&T then you're GSM network, Verizon & Sprint are CDMA..............it just bugs me when people ask to get their Sprint phone activated on another carrier (only exception is Cricket). I had someone a couple of days ago who bought a Tmobile version of the Galaxy S3, and wanted to know how to jailbreak it to use on another carrier.
normally you would be absolutely right. but in this specific case and possible with the S3 as well your incorrect.
the Note II and possibly the S3 have full GSM capabilities. Sprint just "corrupted" them on purpose (and should be illegally as well)
with the gizmo from ebay we get a normal sim card slot. now we just need a good hacker/coder to unlock the intentional "block" put in place by sprint to prevent it from seeing US GSM signals from companies other than sprint.
once someone manages to do that we will literally have a phone that could in theory be used on "ANY" US provider and probably any world provider.

I don't know. Someone posted that the LTE SIM card (a chip on the board) is part of this board. so removing it would remove LTE (disable it)
but if your going SIM your going GSM so can't use sprint LTE anyway. so its not a "huge" deal.

Can't get straight talk to work on my unlocked device

Friday I bought an unlocked Att galaxy note 2 from craigslist. I took it hope and ported my att straight talk number from the normal sd card to the Att mini sd. I waited until my number ported, put my card into the phone. I turned on my phone and had 4g serivce all day. Next morning I had nothing. I would flux between 4g, edge and nothing. As of today, i don't get 4g at all. I'm lucky to hit 1 bar of edge. Now when I don't have serive, I get nearly full bars of emergency calling. I tried the tmobile sim from straight talk and my fiancee's tmobile pay as you go card. Same deal. I tried every apn setting I could dig up. I also checked to see that the IMEI wasn't blocked. Any help would be nice. this is would be one heck of an expensive 5" tablet considering I have a nexus 7.
Custom ROM, unlocked? You ordered the micro SIM from straight talk? Have you tried an att SIM card? you said you got the same thing from your GF's t-mobile SIM, could it be that straight talk registered your SIM with only t-mobile towers?

They person said they unlocked throug att. It was unrooted w/ stock rom. Ordered, no but my micro sd was from a kit I bought when I started straight talk. It was the att straight talk micro sim. It didn't come with a micro tmobile sim so I had my normal sim cut. I tried both of those and my gf's tmobile sim. All three had the same results. I'd get service for maybe an hour then it mostly stay in emergency. I unlocked the aws bands and I got service for a bit but then back to not able to find. Under network operators it can usually only find ATT. I rooted and flashed a stock tmobile rom (read it might help) and nothing. I did notice that sometimes when I restart the phone it will say Att, like its trying to connect. I'm starting to think that the people I got it from maybe didn't unlock the phone. It seems to want to connect only to att but I'm not getting any kind of message saying my sim is invalid or anything. I checked the IMEI number and it says it's not blacklisted.

Ok if your placing a different carrier SIM in your phone, and your not getting any kind of SIM pop up! Then the phone should b unlocked!! As far as the signal not sticking might just ba modem thing. So if you haven't tried changing the radio/modem then that would b your next option. One other thing is to check your APN setting also! That may also help you out. I made a list if you need them!

Nope, never got any kind of sim pop up other than the one at start up that says prepairing.
The modem/radio thing, is that when you hit *#7284# and change it to the second one from the bottom? Or is it more of something I need to download and flash? Like I said, I did the aws enable thing.
More detail on my signal change is, I'll be at 4g after a factory reset. I'll get 4g with near full bars. After a short time it will either drop to edge with maybe 1-2 bars or just get emergency signal. Mostly it sits on emergency. I've only seen it try to connect to att with a tmobile sim a few times last night while working on it. I was questioning the antenna being broken but I usually get near full bars of emerency.

#1 you do have a TMO GN2 right?
#2 are you still on stock Rom?
#3 the*#7284 menu, don't know who told you to go in there but that's not how you change your modem at ALL!!
You flash your new modem in recovery as you do any other zip file!
#4 did you try changing your APN setting, or setting up a new 1??
I'm my buddies TMO GN2. He has a TMO modem, with att apn setting.
So if it's an actual TMO GN2 then add I said b4, your ok flashing a TMO modem/radio. Whatever you want to call it!!!
Do me a favor take a screen shot of your about phone. And I'll b able to c what you have!

I'll get screen shots when I get home from work. I don't the phone with me.
1. I have an Att unlocked GN2
2. I'm on stock rom, but I'm rooted with CWM recovery.
3. I unlocked the aws settings to open up the tmobile abilites this phone as built in (according to the instuctions and such from galaxynote2root.com). That answer is also why i dialed the funky *# number.
4. I did not try the settings from your link. My GF has the phone during the day since she doesnt need to have solid service. Thats why I'm using her tmobile account. eventually I'll be popping in my straight talk sim if I can get this to be something more than an expensive 5" tablet.
Here are the some screen shots from my status menu. I hope I blocked all the stuff that I needed too.

I guess I can check again. I've check a couple times. Its just wierd that when I flash a rom or factory reset or sometimes it only takes a restart but I'll get like 5-13 m/bs downloads on 4g for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. Then It will just pass between edge and emergency. I wish I had a true att card to test it on to see if it works for them. I'm going to try my new att straight talk sim tonight and if that doesn't, I think I'm done messing with it. Just going to sell it as is and pick up a nexus 4 or GSIII.

Hopefully it works and it doesn't end up blocked cause thats some messed up people that do that I bought my first note 2 on Craigslist and it had a screen protector on it after I got home took it off some many scratches on it . Guy said it was brand new . He also changed his number when i tried calling him . My brother also got scammed with a blocked imei I dont understand how people do that

Yeah. This guy has remained n contact and stuff. It was sold as "like new" but there were a few scratches on it. Good thing is zagg covered them up. Bad thing is, I spent $45 on a nice case and zagg for a phone that I can't seem to use. I did find someone at my work willing to pop their att sim in tomorrow and see how that goes. This is the nicest phone I've used. I like pretty much everything about it. It's a big upgrade from my google nexus.

I understand what you mean! But there are those type of people out there always trying to get over. Or make a quick buck$!! Which is SAD. Guess that's why I always buy my phones from the AT&T Store. Never any problems!
Side note: Always over inspect something your buying from someone online!!! Especially electronics...

Ok that's good your going to check it with a actual AT&T SIM. Cause then you'll know if it's the phone or the other SIM card you have?? If it still acts up with the AT&T SIM. Then it's the phone!!:banghead:
I've also read that the SIM tray could b messed up, possibly?
Some owners had reported there's being damaged!!
QUESTION?? I went back thru the post and noticed you said you had, a micro sim kit? Is it something to make a micro out of a regular SIM? If that's the case then I hope that's not causing your problems. Or even started them!
Well let me know what happens when you try out the AT&T SIM card!
One other thing you can try is to put the stock firmware back on the phone and see if that restores everything back to normal for you. Just a taught... because maybe,, that guy had flashed a Rom on there. But just put back what he taught was a stock Rom. Like one of the stock releases from here..

I bought a straightalk kit from walmart. It comes with a 1 month card for service and 3 sims. 1 normal att st sim, 1 micro att sim and 1 normal tmobile st sim. The problem is once you activate an att card and then switch to another one, that card is dead. Att is trying to get out of st.
I did root at one point but then return it to stock after. I recently rooted and flashed again to try out a tmobile rom.
This is a lesson for me. I didn't know about IMEI on a phone so I didn't know it was easy to screw someone. I paid 350 for the phone. I guess that was too good to be true. As much as I like this phone, I think I should have just bought the nexus 4.

That is kind of what is happening to me. I have done several IMEI checkers and they all come back valid. I just checked again and it's still marked as valid. I'm porting my st number from regular sim to micro now. Its been about 2 hours so hopefully it activates soon. I'm hoping it works.

Micro Sim Question?

Ok I upgraded to the S3 yesterday and didn't know the sim card was smaller than the s2 so I cut it to fit and it works but only on UTMS not HSPA network like I got with my S2. It says 4G in the status bar but network is UTMS not HSPA like it's supposed to be. So my question is if I buy the special sim card at tmobile for $ 20 will it make a difference or not? Basically will I get my HSPA network status back.Makes no since that on the S2 I got HSPA but only UTMS on the S3. Is there something special in the newer sim cards? I noticed the gold pad on the mini micro's are smaller than the regular sim cards as well. Thanks for any insight.

Go to the local tmobile store and they will replace it for free as long as you are on the T-Mobile network.
(that's what I did) LOL

I called them and they told me the card was $ 20 and I have been with them almost 2 years now... so that's crazy ain't it.
Edit: One store said $ 20 and another said free ... Sounds like one of them was trying to get me for $20...lol

I know... It's crazy for sure.
If you call the 1-800 number for Tmobile and tell them what happened, they will tell you it's free.
That's what I did before I went down to the local Tmobile store to get my card replaced.
The way I found out it was free is I googled it and found it was free, this was even before I called
the toll free 1-800 number to verify it.
Hope the store that told you it's free is not too far from you.
Good luck!
UMTS is normsl. It does this to conserve power and bandwidth. Check it while downloading a large file.
Did your S3 not come with a sim?

No, my S3 did not come with one since I purchased it new on eBay
and I did not even know that the sim card in from my S2 would not fit..
Oh ok. I thought that sny new T999 would have a sim in the box, but maybe its only if you buy through tmobile.
Anyway, glad you found a new one for free. If your other one was yoo old some features wouldnt work anyway, such as wifi calling or hotspot.

Tmobile does not require you to buy a phone from them, I just switched to tmobile about 12 months
ago from AT&T and at that time I had the S2 then I purchased the unlocked S3 on eBay.
Even though it was new I never expected it to come with a sim card. LOL
I was unaware that the S3 sim is a lot smaller because I over looked that detail about the phone.
Then I went down to the local tmobile store and they gave me one free of charge and un-registered
the old larger sim which I had.
