Well, basically as the title says. This's happened several times to me already. Say I'll turn my phone on (from standby) I'll get a popup error saying that the backup was unable to complete because no SD card was found. Next, the music application won't load the songs because those're all stored on the card. Same for Photos/Gallery. When I go to ES File Explorer, the 'sdcard' folder reports that it is empty.
There hasn't been a pattern that I discovered. This just happened now when I woke up (phone left charging overnight; Wi-Fi & Sync enabled) and I decided to come post here. Happened again yesterday afternoon when I got my phone out to play some music on the way home.
Every once in a while, I'd get lucky and the files would show up by themselves, but the only fool-proof way I've found to get the phone working properly again is a restart, which takes several minutes to do.
I am NOT running any task manager (well, I was but when this problem started up I checked another thread which recommended to remove the task manager, so I did).
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Do you know of a fix, or is it just me?
Mine's done this a couple of times, but I've put it down to the SD card not being quite pushed home properly. Worth taking it out and cleaning the contacts.
Nope, that doesn't work. I re-inserted it yesterday (contacts were clean) and this morning woke up with the same problem.
Please tell me this isn't just happening to me, cause it'll be a right pain in the ass to have this repaired (sending abroad/etc).
Is the SD Card the one you got with the phone (4Gb) or another make/model size? Please include details so others can help more.
I have left the given Samsung Class 2 4Gb SD card in mine and I have never had any issues with the SD Card unmounting. This is not saying it won't happen, but for me it has been fine. I was going to upgrade to my other Sandisk 16Gb Class 2 that used to be in my Touch Pro, but will do that hopefully this evening.
So all I can guess is either a faulty card or some issue with Class/Size/Manufacturer of Card (if you changed from the Samsung one) ?
It's the stock 4GB card that came pre-installed in the phone. Phone's unlocked too, bought from Clove. If it helps/is relevant: when I loaded up the camera it gave an error saying something like 'no sufficient read permissions for SD card'*, maybe that'd be a clue to the problem.
*I can't quote exactly cause I've since restarted the phone and can't remember it word for word. If/when this happens again I'll post the exact error.
EDIT: There, it just happened again. Restarted the phone not even an hour ago, it's getting ridiculous. Anyway, the error from the camera reads "Unable to save file to SD card due to insufficient file permissions".
FWIW, when I go to SD & Phone Storage settings i CAN see the total and available space on the card. It's just completely inaccessible by the programs. Have also tried the 'SDMount' widget, did absolutely nothing.
Happens to me too but only when I've been letting go of my phone to put it down rather than placing it down, or if I have to drop it on my bed or chair quick.
Happened to me a lot too when I was using one of the lock screen info apps, to get my calendar info on the lock screen. Uninstalled and the SD card problem went away.

Never used that :/
I've uninstalled all apps that seemingly access the SD card and will start reinstalling one by one to see if the problem does come back. Only way I could think of.
It is happening to me also. The last 3 days is doing it at least twice a day , i have the desire almost one month and neved had this problem earlier.
And i though it was something i did.
i had the same camera permissions problem. restarted and havnt seen it again since. 4gb card that came with the unbranded device. no idea what caused it, could be any number off new apps etc :S
I've got the same problem.
I've already tried to reformat my SDcard, but the problem still exists. Another problem when the SD card unmounts, is the CPU usage. This rises to ~10% constantly. Probably cause of this are apps which are trying to write to my SDcard.
Still no solution found, maybe I'll try another SD card in a couple of days.
FWIW, I gave up on the stock card and copied all my stuff over to another 4GB card I had running around (straight copy) and it seems to be working fine now. Haven't had a problem yet, although it hasn't even been 24 hours.
Will report back if/when something comes up, and when I start re-installing the apps that I previously removed.
I wrote to HTC earlier yesterday describing the same problem, and I just received this reply:
Dear Mr.Matthew Thank you for contacting HTC. Maybe you mount it on the pc to copy nd paste something and you forgot to unmount it from the pc.. Are you using the inbox SD card? Did you install any third party applications to the phone? Please use the phone in Safe Mode. Safe mode terminates all installed running applications, in case if they caused this issue. Please backup what you have on the SD Card and Format it. If you have any other inquiries, don’t hesitate to contact us again. Please note that you can contact us via support line. For further details, please go to http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx , Thank you so much for using HTC products. Respect & Regards, HTC Team http://www.htc.com

Only thing I have not yet tried is the Safe Mode. Will see if it needs to get to that.
i had this issue when I installed 'ebuddy'... uninstalled it and the problem is no more
It's started to occur on mine at least twice daily now, it wasn't so before about 4 days back. I've just actually restarted the device on getting such an error and apps complaining that they can't read/write to the SD card. Really after some sort of fix here.

You're right it seems that was my problem too.
I got rid off ebuddy and all is fine now
I've had this problem once so far, and reading the reply from HTC reminds me that I have unplugged my phone from my mac without unmounting it a few times...
I am also having this issue and have ebuddy installed! I shall uninstall it and see if it fixes it! I really hope it does because its starting to get annoying
I too have ebuddy installed and shall also try removing it and see if that fixes it!
I don't have ebuddy installed but just experienced the SD card error with the camera today.

I'm hoping someone can help me. After going through several sd cards, thinking the phone was frying them from being overclocked, I've come to realize it's something with partitioning the card.
I was having a problem with not seeing the pictures I take when mounted to the laptop. After a fresh boot or whatever, the first set of pictures were fine. Then something would happen. After disconnecting and taking more pictures, when I would connect to the laptop this time, no pictures. I would disconnect and let the phone load the SD and I would check the gallery. The pictures were there just fine. I would connect back to the laptop and nothing.
After extensive testing, I found that if I just simply rebooted the phone, the second set of pictures would be show up. WTF.
This is the strangest thing I've ever come across. I don't like it when I can't figure things out for myself, lol. Please, if anyone can help, post your thoughts and/or solutions.
Thanks in advance
My problem might be a little odd, but im not really sure whats going on with it.
Basically when i take a photo, it shows up on my phone in the gallery and file mangers, but when connected to my PC with a USB, the photos dont show up.
I can get the images to appear on Windows after rebooting my phone, but i was wondering if there was another way to solve it.
Any one have any ideas?
Thanks
i have exactly the same problem on my desire gsm with cm7 latest stable. if i take some photos they commonly show up on my sdcard. if i unplug it again to do some new photos, plug it back in and browse the sdcard the new taken pictures wont show up... does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
i think i read a thread on here the other day about this could be that ur sd card is cooked. search the forums its here somewhere sorry cant remember where. maybe try a different card
my card does this but it also isnt recognized in my pc anymore when it always was so im thinking its frazzled,
This was the orignal microsd that came with the phone.
This is what happened...
I was taking some pictures when the last picture I took showed up just black in the preview window and wouldn't let me view that picture. I then rebooted my phone, this time the small preview window showed the most recent picture but when it went to preview the picture it was black with some sort of error looking image in the middle, same with the other pictures I would browse to. I had some calls to make so made those calls and figured I'd try to reboot again, this time when android finished booting it was complaining about the sdcard not being supported or the wrong format.
At this point I was pretty geeked out, have lots of pictures/video from the last month of traveling, so I turn off my epic pop out the sdcard and throw it in my nook color that has CM7 on it. The nook complains about the sdcard being blank.
So here I am now. Hopefully somebody will have some ninja way of retrieving the media off that microsd...
Also, do you think it's safe to use the sdcard from the nook or is that a bad idea as what happened might be something hardware related with my phone?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
What ROM and kernel are/were you using at the time? Stock rooted or a custom setup? I have had this happen twice before since I began using custom stuff and I lost everything both times. Hopefully someone may know a backup folder (if it exists) that your media is sent to. More info on your setup may help though

You might want to try putting your SD card in a reader attached directly to a PC and try some file recovery utilities. Just google free file recovery and I'm sure you'll find some utilities to try. You may lose filenames and stuff, but if there's data left on that card you should be able to raw read it.

@John - were the microSD both dead or did a format fix the issue?
I won't really have access to a computer until Wednesday or Thursday when I get back from this trip, so no point in stressing out and ruining the left few days of my summer. It's just really going to bum me out if I'm not able to recover that stuff, had lots of stuff from the last couple weeks that I hadn't done anything with yet. Probably the most bummed about the videos of A Perfect Circle and the Black Keys from last weekend that hadn't made their way to YouTube yet.
What do you guys think about using the sdcard from the nook? I don't want to fry that one too if something is wrong with my epic.
Appreciate the input, thanks guys
If you format, you delete everything. Try copying your SD to your PC, then format, then copy back to SD. That may help. I had no luck when it happened to me though :-(

You SHOULD be able to save the SD card but most likely your stuff on it got corrupted somehow. What exactly have you tried so far and what is your current setup?

OK this is driving me crazy, when I connect my phone to my PC (Win 7) and go to my phone files they all look empty, I click on DCIM and choose camera all my pictures are there but I can't see them they don't popup automatically like they use to, the only way I can browse through my pictures is by opening them up individually, I tried the same thing with my old Galaxy S Vibrant and it works just fine I can see all my files and the contents without me opening them up, so I know there is nothing wrong with the computer. I tried different data cables original and others again with no luck, does anyone have any idea what is wrong with my phone, please help.
Can you post a screen shot so that we have a better idea of what you are talking about?

I have the same issue extremely intermittently. The only resolution I have discovered so far is to disconnect and reconnect the phone to the PC.

I just connected my S3 to see if mine did the same thing, and it does. I think that the problem is that the phone connects to the computer using MTP and not mass storage. Here's a link with some one else that had the same problem.

Thanks for the reply, I'm kinda glad to know it's not just me that can't see any thumbnails, can someone else confirm that these devices don't load any thumbnails...
Damn it man, I can verify I have the same damn problem. Followed the link posted and nothing in there was helpful. If ANYONE has a link or answer please post. It would be most appreciated. Meanwhile i'm going to start researching the issue, if I find a solution I will post.

I can't believe a flagship devise like this can be this low tech, I have over 500 pictures in the camera folder how can I see the pictures I took recently on my PC if thumbnails won't load up, I hope the next update will address this problem and fix it.
Well I found some information in the link below. However every time you reboot you have go thru the process again and it is only for the external sd card. You are right this is extremely sad for FLAGSHIP DEVICE, I guess I am lucky I dont have that many pictures and dont take that many pictures that I can manage them thru the device.

The solution I found
This might not be the solution you are looking for, but it fixed it for me!
Basically, if your screen is locked when you connect your handset to your computer it will not read the files. Simply unlock your screen before connecting and they should come up...
If you think about it this is actually a pretty good security feature, but pretty confusing if you are not aware of it.
Hope this helps, I set up an account just to answer this so I hope it was worth the effort! haha. :victory:
