Computer People Help - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Ok I know this is not a question for most XDA members but I am looking for a creditable forum like XDA for Laptops and Desktops and don't know where to turn... And since I turn to XDA for all my hand held "Computers" I thought I might ask for some assistance finding a creditable source.
I THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

Are you looking for anything in particular? Desktop vs Laptop. Specific brand. Online vs in store. Where are you located?
I bought my last 2 laptops from Best Buy because they were deeply discounted, very comparable to online prices, and I was able to get them immediately without having to wait for shipping (or the dangers electronics may face during shipping). Regardless, I've never had issues with sites like Newegg and TigerDirect. They both tend to have good prices (most of the time) and fast shipping. I know there are a bunch of others, but those are the 2 I frequent most often when I'm looking for items.
Also, when you find something you like, make sure to check out Amazon. I've been noticing them really trying to compete with other sites over the last year or 2.

Well to honest I have been acquiring computers from friends and family and now have 3 laptops and 1 desktop...The desktop has a faulty hdd (3.5 SATA) and I have an idea extra 2.5 SATA laying around is there a some way to allow the 2.5 to run temporarily until I can go get a new hdd... I know the connections fit just fine but would there be reprocussions for doing this
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

As long as the connections are correct, you shouldnt have an issue. Since it's a smaller hdd (physically) you might need to rig some clips or something to the hdd bay of your desktop unless it's a newer tower and has support for a smaller hdd, otherwise the hdd might move and rattle if you move your comp someplace. Plus, you really dont want anything jarring it loose for any reason while it's functioning.
So I'd say go ahead and reformat and install your os of choice. Unless somebody suggests a reason not to, I dont see any actual issues.

Thank you very much I am going to try and reformat now... I figured this would work I just wanted to be sure before I started messing with it lol I really appreciate the help

It will be fine, but you'll be running whatever os was on that drive, unless you reformat it as said.
Though if you want a new lappy / desktop, it really depends on what you want to do with it, and price range.

The Epic is my Only Computer

I am typing this on a laptop that I am getting ready to sell because I really do not use it much any more since I have bought my E4GT. These phones have come a long way since I last tried to do this on an HTC Thunderbolt. And with Sprint's unlimited data I found it was just as expensive to have an non data phone and a cable internet connection.
Just wondering how many of you out there are using your Epic 4G touch as your only computer and how you have it tweaked.
I have:
A 32GB SD Card
Installed Unnamed ROM
A six foot USB to Micro cable so I can more easily plug it in while I am at coffee shops.
A Karpus clamp stand
A Casemate case
Planning to get:
Full size USB adaptor
HDMI out adpator
Your nuts. Your going to regret it
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
There's no way I could use the E4GT like that. Yes, it has come a long way but to replace a laptop? Not for me at least. I also have the 32GB sd card and an MHL adapter. I could see it replacing a tablet but that's about it. At the same time I'm a college student so of course I have different look at it.
Hahahaha! Why? What would you miss?
I have to say, I was a network engineer in the late 90's with Cisco Systems and when I left that job I got rid of all computers, my tv, and only had a land line phone. I did that for two years and it was a good break.
I guess I should also say I am pretty much bored with the internet. I do not play games and I just use it for email and other communication. The voice recognition makes writing pretty smooth. I loved skype and google video chat and I have that on the phone.
I am also going to be traveling for an extended period with pretty much just a backpack so it lightens the load extremely well. Plus the camera on this thing is fun, check out my pics, I took all of these on the phone:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/113449280935158277907/albums/posts
All you need is a bluetooth mouse, keyboard and a monitor.
What about Odin? You may need it when you least expect it. I hardly ever use mine either but when my last one was broken, I had to rely on a friend when a ROM I tried went nuts

I flashed a bad kernel that hosed my recovery as well, I had to dust off the ol computer and do an odin.

Yeah, that is the one thing that gives me a little but of concern. But UnNamed ROM has been very solid but I am continuing to test so if I need I can go back to Stock if I start traveling. And if Sprint lets out an update without CIQ I will probably load that in case my hardware breaks and I need to take it into sprint.
But I do have the stock EG30 ROM with the one click installer on an USB stick which I can always use in case of an emergency.
I've used nothing but a phone or a tablet instead of a p.c. for well over a year, now.
To be honest, it's not really about the Android device that I'm on, it's more about the apps I have installed, and about the connection speed in which I can connect to the Internet:
My "substitute ET4G for computer" doesn't really seem too much different than my "substitute Evo3d for computer", or even my "substitute Evo4G for computer", as far as just getting things done...
(It's not really the device that matters, in that respect.)

I still have a computer, but my main device has been a mobile device for well over 2 years. Now, between my tablet and my phone, my computer is used almost solely to stream netflix to my tv and as a music server for my stereo rig. I will prolly keep it around for the foreseeable future, but it gets less and less use.
Are you hurting for money or something? Why would you sell your laptop? Doesn't make sense.

Well, I am not hurting for money but I do prefer a simpler life. I try to live on less than $1100 a month and add I said,I will be traveling light the next few months so getting rid of six pounds is huge. Plus the extra cash would pay for most of my train travel.
But, when I do find my next place to live I will probably build a low power desktop.

I have 2 laptops, and 2 desktops in my house that I rarely, if ever, touch.
Yet I spend a great deal of my free time on the internet, and doing "computer work".
Why is it so hard to believe that someone might want to get rid of something that they almost never use?

Google chrome preinstalled and default would be nice too.
I have the fastest AMD comp u can prettu much build. 6 cores overclocked to 4.2 Ghz i use it when i need to download some things that dont work over phone, craigs list and building simple websites some times. Also i use odin of course. Backing up picturea and music. Its atleast $1, 500 state of the art comp i build. Sadly i use it maybe 3x a month. If i had to choose only 1 device id use my phone. Phones are amazing now that i got this GSII
I traded in my beloved Dell XPS1710 for an Iconia Tab last April. Most of my "computer work" on my laptop was just surfing and email. I still have a home built desktop that I use for work (development) that just can't be done on a tab or phone.
Now I have the E4GT and I do fine with 95% of my needs. If I were not a developer, I probably wouldn't need the PC at all. But there are a few things that I just need the PC for, (DVD buring comes to mind).
I'm somewhere in between. Have my laptop with a 24" external monitor at the office and use my SGSII when I'm at home. If I need some serious power or screen real estate I just take the laptop home with me. Laptop for work, phone for entertainment ;-)

Build able phone

Do u think in 10 years phones well be built able like after market desktops
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Maybe. I think it would be possible, but a pain in the butt to do because they will be so small. They may have large screens, but most of the guts come from the battery really. If someone could create a tiny and powerful battery, phones would be crazy thin.
Back on topic, I think it could be possible, but not possible to take out individual components without a tool or machine to do it for you.
Then again, phone companies will probably decide against it entirely simply because they want you to spend the money and upgrade. The parts themselves are probably dirt cheap, but when the manufacturers put them together, increase the sale price tenfold. From a business perspective it doesn't make sense.
Now, another thing to consider is the rate of change in technology. In 10 years, phones might be a thing of the past. After all, they are pretty much replacing computers. I just typed up a document the other day on my phone because I didn't want to wait and boot up my computer
But I guess my answer is, no I don't think it will happen. Just my opinion though.

House was robbed and Nexus 7 with a bunch of electronics stolen

I want to find out who did this, among the things stolen was a rooted Nexus 7 with Lookout. Any suggestions of how to find my stuff would be greatly appreciated. Also a PS3 was taken I know this kind of doesn't have anything to do with the S3 but I'm always on this thread and trust the people here and know you are helpful.

I would think time is a factor... Since you have Lookout installed, you can find out the general vicinity (depends on accuracy of the GPS) of where the tablet is currently located.
You can go to the police with that information, and maybe they'll do something (not extremely likely).
If you want some delicious justice, order a pizza for that house every night for a month and watch as they answer the door and get increasingly frustrated. Once you've fattened them up on grease and pepperoni, they won't be able to outrun you as you chase them down. Of course, they might have sold your stuff in that time, but you have efficiently reduced their ability to steal again (floorboards creak a lot more when you're 275 than when you're 175).
In all seriousness, though, I think it sucks that this stuff was stolen. If you have home (or renter's) insurance, they'll cover the loss. Otherwise, Lookout GPS information and reporting to the police might be the best bet.

Yes. My revenge will be swift and fierce if I find them. I will have the police arresting them the second I find them. I can track them through the PS3 also. So one way or another I hope to find them. My brother is a State Investigator, so I can contact the right people when this stuff pops up through GPS.
Bummer dude, I hate thieves. ...I'm in the sacto area to, should we set up a perimeter? I hope you get your stuff back or at least some justice, vigilante or other wise.
I hope you find out who did this Thief's disappoint me. Keep us updated!

Something similar happened to my I did a remote install of plan b it tracked my phone found out where it was called then ops and they wouldn't do a god damn thing. Hope you have better luck. I live in Vegas and most locals roll around strapped and considering my phone was in the hood I didn't feel the risk was worth the reward. And that's where assurion comes in!

Faced a similar issue except I had the Gotya app installed and thanks to that app I was able to not only track him down but also get loads of snapshots of the dudes face and got my phone back. Been using Gotya ever since. would recommend it in case this ever happens to you again. Hope you find him. Good luck.

I couldn't resist this deal but reading the reviews now was it really a good buy?

It was a hell of a deal, much better than most of us who have them got it for. You're asking us to tell you, after the fact, if it was wise? That's between you, your use cases, and your money. You should always know what you're buying, whather it costs $2 or $200...
With that said, if your use cases are anything close to what the tablet is good at, yeah, that's a hell of a steal.
Primarily movies and streaming media like tv shows and stuff.

Quite good for that, though you might want to get a microSD card if you want to store movies locally. Those will use up the internal storage quickly.
Yeah, this is a good price. Probably a student or teaching staff that's flogging it though.

So for that it's a very good deal as you have a tablet and a pc at the same time/ I wanted to be able to use my USB device but also be able to browse my network drives connect via ssh to my apple tv,...

Plus you can get USB hard drives quite cheaply now, especially with the money you have saved on the surface in the first place. Stick movies on there for long term storage.
You will probably want the microSD anyway though, 32gb on a windows machine is very little. You can use 64gb microSD's in it I think, or just use 32 or less I guess.

I too couldn't resist. Mine arrived yesterday. While it has "REFURBISHED" stickers, both the unit and keyboard look brand new. The only minor sign of prior use is with the power supply.
I've been running RT 8.1 on my Dell XPS 10, so I knew what I was in for as far as the OS is concerned. In other words, I am very happy it jumped.

Buying what?
You might want to be more detailed for those of us reading on tapatalk...
I bought mine in the uk last weekend for £319 with touch cover, I knew exactly what I was buying, as I hate the ipad and have grown to detest android, even after having and hacking a dell streak, Motorola droid etc. I also used ios for years with jailbreak and in the week I have had the surface I have to say am very happy. if I had bought at $199 I would be singing from the roof tops as that's a steal. it is a tablet that divides opinion, because the world, cant see how not having to sync to the bloody terrible iTunes is a good thing. tonight I have rearranged the music on the usb stick, I use in my lexus, written a couple of lengthy emails with attachments, reviewed a couple hotels, and created half a power point presentation all from my tablet.
I can honestly say that the only thing I am missing from ios and android is bad piggies and I am pretty sure that Google and apple fanboys would say that's cause there app stores are better, they maybe but they make up or stale hardware.

At one point Rovio mentioned that Bad Piggies would release on windows 8, and the unity game engine does support both windows 8 and RT, no idea what happened to that.

SanDisk dual 16gb flash drive

interesting device. I'm not not sold on the transferring file thing. Yes, it's true, but a USB cable does the same thing, LOL.
I do think it's a nice way to be able to store files that one may use on both devices a bit more easily, especially for those that don't like hooking up their phones to a PC (this would not be this crowd overall).
Wish that Samsung being the world leaders in memory production and distribution they are would be paving the way of much higher memory. You think they would.
I think even dual memory chips would be awesome. Nokia did it like 6 years ago even.

If your like me and can't stand having all your backups on your phone/sd card taking up alot of space. Then this is a good device to have as you can still have your backups or whatever you like with you at all times. For me there's been a time or two where my Rom was working just fine but after a few hours out of the house my phone would lock up and keep doing it. And my backups were at home. With this device that no longer is a problem.
Oh yeah. This is something I'll be picking up.
