Any reason why I'm getting slow speeds with full HSPA+? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi I just been trying to figure out why my speeds have been so slow. I'm running jedi 7.2 rom if that matters. Here are a couple screen shots. Any help would be appreciated.

ROM isn't the problem.
Try a different server in the Speedtest app. Here in Los Angeles, I get crappy speeds off all the local test servers, so I manually pick something like San Jose or Las Vegas and get a much more accurate speed measurement (read higher).

It's relatively all the same speeds no matter the server. Take a look.

I'm running the same ROM and kernel with no problems. This is what you need to be checking for under your status. The higher the number, the lower the speeds. Also remember H+ is 4G, not H.

Yeah, technically, we all know the truth but you exactly know what I'm talking about. Don't you? =)

You may consider changing your hsxpa and hsdpa settings in build.prop .. since your RSSI is ~ -60 already.. you clearly dont have a reception issue.
For Tmo [on the WC] hsxpa @ 3 and hsdpa @ 6 gives me the most bandwidth.. lowest ping and fastest upload results.

Are you having the same issue everywhere or just by your house? There could be an issue with the cell tower itself. Something similar happened to me in 05- I had full signal but could not place or receive calls or get any data whatsoever on any of my phones. If I drove across town & connected to another tower, I had no issues. T-Mobile actually sent a rep out to my house to observe the problem & they had to come fix the tower by my house.

I'm trying to gather a little information in regards to mobile data speeds specifically within the NYC area. A few questions if you may kindly respond to get the discussion rolling.
What modem/baseband/radio are you currently using?
What rom are you currently using?
How are your data speeds while on mobile data with said modem/baseband/radio?
Have you flashed any scripts/tweaks or use any apps to assist with your mobile data speeds?
With regards to location, where do you use mobile data the most? (post one of the 5 boroughs)

1) LJ7
2) CM10 latest nightly
3) Terrible piece of ****. Doesn't matter what baseband I'm using its **** data in my area.
4) Tried a few over the years, non have worked. Maybe someone can recommend me something?
5) Staten Island
I will say there are some areas in S.I. that have good data speeds...just not mine. Every other carrier but Sprint has good data speeds in my area.
I believe putting speeds, instead of "****" would help make this survey more accurate in terms of logistics. Haha

LJ7 Leak Modem/Baseband/Radio
LJ7 Leaked ROM
Can easily pull down well over 2 Mb/s in downtown Manhattan (Battery Park) late at night, and around 1.7 Mb/s average. Can also pull down around 2 Mb/s in Nassau county, LI on average. Where I live in Queens, 400 Kb/s average.
No tweaks or scripts of any kind. Personally don't believe they work.
I travel from Queens to Manhattan at least once a week, and have noticed that speeds in NYC seem to depend on network load. I generally get much better speeds late at night.
I've been getting a good 1-3mbps on 3g

First of all, everyone's network speeds will vary by carrier and location.
Are you talking about wireless internet?
Are you on 3G or LTE?
What are you using to get your speed results?
My speeds could be great, and I walk two feet over and its horrible. My phone will hop to a different cell tower. Or while I'm at home I could be in a dead zone so my wireless will drop out. You need to be much much much more specific then what your telling us.
The chances of another fellow xda member using the same cell tower or your wireless router is slim to none. Just so your aware. Could be a problem with your carrier as well

My data is horrible recently!

At home my data is usually always 7mbps-15mbps.. This past week it's been horrible at home. At about 40kbps...
At work and everywhere else it's fine, but once I get home it's horrible! Even 2 miles away from my house, it's fine.
I called tmobile and they filed a ticket to look into the tower but could take up to 10 days.
Anyone have any ideas?

Depending on where u live ur tower by ur house can be old and not updated so it slower or it can be a borrowed tower. The one by ur job must be in a city which they update first. For me the new lte modem sucks I went back to the old modem. It is more reliable.

Also, it's not like I'm underground or hidden from the outside world, I'm sitting right next to a window in a 6 story building. I've honestly had enough of t-mobile.. they always mess up my contract and have such ****ty speeds in my area. Not to mention, they directly lie to you over the phone and barely keep any promises. Oh and New York being one of the biggest cities isn't even one of the LTE cities that was upgraded. Sorry for this rant but I'm just kinda pissed with TMO.
Does anyone know if I can somehow check if my phone is set on the right antenna?

Yes a big difference. I mostly use WiFi tho when out cause I have WiFi hot spots every place by me. But the lte modem is use less by me till lte is around here.
Use the old apn if you're having issues. There's already a thread on this. Search for it.
I have a feeling the new apn is speed limited so when lte fully rolls out the hspa network isn't overloaded. Most people don't notice a difference between 8mbps and 11mbps. Which was my difference. But if your difference is between 3-5mbps and 55kbps then it's probably a tower issue as well.

T-Mobile HSDPA maxes out at 8mbps

Doing recent speed tests on my Note II, I've noticed that on the download, they go no faster than 8mbps, in fact, they all now consistently hover around 8mbps in the best of scenarios. On lower signal, it is obviously lower, but my speedtests on HSPA+ are almost all perfectly around 8mbps give or take 5kbps. Is anyone else noticing this? Has T-Mobile realized it might not be the best idea to give everyone access to all the available bandwidth and instead is limiting everyone to 8mbps? That's actually pretty smart.. I'm locates in Virginia a beach and I've tested on several different cellsites. All the same download speed. Used to get as much as 27mbps.
LTE seems unaffected but it maxes out around 27mbps now, but LTE technically isn't official here (;
I think the fix is to change your apn back to the epc.tmobile that we used to have.

I think it has something to do with the LTE radio as my s3 would get into the 20's on HSPA, still does. I don't get higher than 15 mbps in my Note, same area and everything. I have yet to change apn settings to old one as anything over 8 is fine honestly. Still getting over 4 upload, so no worries.
I do think if you Change it and LTE comes to your area, change it back and should be there.

lte turned on in fairfield ca fast speeds
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Except if T-Mobile is doing this intentionally, it's not very good for them to not make their customer base aware of this. Like I said, no single user needs access to as much of the bandwidth as the tower + spectrum permits, 8mbps down limit can guarantee equal QOS for everyone on HSDPA. But they really need to make a public announcement about it. And those LTE speeds aren't very good for a network in which no one else is using. But it will probably be better when LTE is official in our areas.
I get 8-14 in NYC.
Im in Dallas, TX and on my stock Note 2 i can get 10-15 megs down with 1-2 up in most places.
Thats with the fast.tmo apn. At least in my market they are not capping at 8megs down, thats if they are doing that at all.
Just ran a speed test at my desk and i got 14.18 down 1.4megs up..

Why does my tmobile data and connection speed suck so bad?

I live in Hesperia, CA. Tmobile 4g network blows here. I just did a speed test and the testing app showed I had a 3g connection while the status bar icon showed it as 4g(screenie added) what's up with that is tmo lying to me? Saying I'm connected to 4g when I'm actually not... I never get above 200kbps during the day, at night I can get 1500kbps but that sucks too. I'm getting so frustrated I switched from metro and their network was better. I got 2500kbps from them.

I guess you can go to the extreme of saying tmobile is lying to you, but in reality no they're not. "4g" just shows when data activity is happening. You are barely over edge speeds though. I would say try different radios and such and look at the map from this post and play around to see which will help you specifically. In the mean time put your phone to edge only so you stop wasting battery lol. [Baseband] ALL T999(V) Modems! w/ MAP and Data Tweaks!

They are misleading intentionally.
Start a big download and go to the dialer, input *#0011#. Take note of the band you are on (2 or 4) and which items have a 1 on them out of HSPA and HSDPA. If you are on band 2 and see a one next to either of those options, you can try forcing 1700 by using *#2263# and choosing it under WCDMA. This will cause you to lose service if you have poor 1700 coverage, particularly for voice calls but you can always set it back by going back to the main 2263 menu and hitting automatic.
If those don't work or you see zeroes have you gone into phone status to see if you have an IMEI? Because that will lock you to UMTS. Shortcut to find out - *#06#

I've tried this using *#0011# and I get an error. I put *#06# and it showed my IMEI yet I was unable to still use those two codes.

I was assuming that you were on a TouchWiz ROM (these codes only work on the Samsung dialer) based on the fact that you had a 4G icon up there - if you're not on stock, there's not an easy way to troubleshoot. If you are on stock, you have to use the built in dialer, not a third party app.
Its worth the time to go to a TW ROM to try to troubleshoot it but if your IMEI came up fine then its less worth the hassle. Wish I could help you out more but it looks like you might be in a highly congested area on the network :/

my apologies. i was on liquidsmooth with uvmd5 and didnt understand why my download speeds were so slow so i wanted to check what this was all about. im currently switching between uvlja and uvli8 to see which modem works best in my area.
I was on uvlja when I started having the issues so I upgraded to uvmd5 and I am still having the problems. I'm not so sure anymore that the modems are the problem. I'm running DarthstalkerX2 I've been using these roms for quite a while but I've only been experiencing these issues for a couple of months.

This is weird....
Evertime I try to post in the general thread, it shows up here!
Edited.....
Figured it out...
I'm in the Fresno, CA area, and I've been running the UVDM5 modem for a few days. I noticed it has much slower upload speeds, while downloads are a little bit lower compared to the UVLJA
Ok everyone tmobile finally admitted to me that I am in a HORRIBLY BAD congested area of their network. No ETA on a fix either. I was given the option to return the phone cancel service and move on at no extra charge. I have until the 27th to make my decision. What should I do. Stay or go?

If they are admitting it then it must be *REALLY* bad... If data speeds are more important than pricing to you, I say jump ship.

T-Mo is not lying. You're still on their 4G network, but as someone mentioned, it's probably congested. Additionally, for most areas, T-Mo's 3G and 4G network is the exact same technology. If you're paying for the 4G service, they take the "speed limiter" off. Simple as that. Most likely a bad area of Cali for T-Mobile.

I'd like to see your sources for this because 3G UMTS, 3.5G HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+, and true 4G LTE are all different technologies. UMTS maxes out at 384Kbps, HSDPA ranges from 7 to 21Mbps, HSPA+ is up to 21Mbps but includes HSUPA for up to 5.76Mbps upload, and DC-HSPA+ is up to 42Mbps on the downlink with the same 5.76Mbps upload of standard HSPA+. 4G LTE can exceed 100Mbps.
While its true that they all operate off of wideband CDMA technology, they are NOT the same and require tower upgrades... T-Mobile does not discriminate based on your data plan. They discriminate based on your data usage compared to the plan you purchased and throttle you when you exceed what you paid for. Plain and simple.
Get your facts straight before you spout off nonsense.
EDIT: I am not aware if T-Mobile has deployed pico cells for UMTS anywhere but if they have, UMTS can go up to 2Mbps on a pico cell.

And, you're getting mad... for what? You need to chill. I have no idea why people get such superior attitudes when they correct someone.
