Doing recent speed tests on my Note II, I've noticed that on the download, they go no faster than 8mbps, in fact, they all now consistently hover around 8mbps in the best of scenarios. On lower signal, it is obviously lower, but my speedtests on HSPA+ are almost all perfectly around 8mbps give or take 5kbps. Is anyone else noticing this? Has T-Mobile realized it might not be the best idea to give everyone access to all the available bandwidth and instead is limiting everyone to 8mbps? That's actually pretty smart.. I'm locates in Virginia a beach and I've tested on several different cellsites. All the same download speed. Used to get as much as 27mbps.
LTE seems unaffected but it maxes out around 27mbps now, but LTE technically isn't official here (;
I think the fix is to change your apn back to the epc.tmobile that we used to have.

I think it has something to do with the LTE radio as my s3 would get into the 20's on HSPA, still does. I don't get higher than 15 mbps in my Note, same area and everything. I have yet to change apn settings to old one as anything over 8 is fine honestly. Still getting over 4 upload, so no worries.
I do think if you Change it and LTE comes to your area, change it back and should be there.

lte turned on in fairfield ca fast speeds

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Except if T-Mobile is doing this intentionally, it's not very good for them to not make their customer base aware of this. Like I said, no single user needs access to as much of the bandwidth as the tower + spectrum permits, 8mbps down limit can guarantee equal QOS for everyone on HSDPA. But they really need to make a public announcement about it. And those LTE speeds aren't very good for a network in which no one else is using. But it will probably be better when LTE is official in our areas.
I get 8-14 in NYC.
Im in Dallas, TX and on my stock Note 2 i can get 10-15 megs down with 1-2 up in most places.
Thats with the fast.tmo apn. At least in my market they are not capping at 8megs down, thats if they are doing that at all.
Just ran a speed test at my desk and i got 14.18 down 1.4megs up..

I know there are a lot of threads out there for speed tests, however most of which are aimed at the CDMA version of the phone on the verizon wireless network.
If you are on the AT&T network, post the results of your SpeedTest.Net results.
Get the SpeedTest.Net app here
That's a good usable speed, but for HSPA+ I don't think it's that good. I've never used HSPA+ but from what I've seen others get I'm just throwing that out there.
This is what I generally average in NJ on AT&T. Acceptable.
HSPA+ its not bad but the att lte rocks (if available in your area)
Would put a picture but I am not allowed to post pics on this forum for some reason.
Below is the picture. I could not edit my post and add it so I had to repost a new thread.
For mobile speeds on a faux 4G its not bad. Good upload speed. I am raving on the lte network about their speed tests. Its blazing fast.
You think att will offer a Nexus lte device like Verizon?
Anyways just wanted to post the lte speed test for my skyrocket.

This is also about average for just outside of Manassas, VA (@ work). At home (up in the eastern panhandle of WV) I average about 4.5 or so. In DC I've gotten both really good speeds (8-9 MBPS) and pretty slow speeds (~ 1 MBPS), so it is definitely dependent upon the tower you are connected to and throughput/backhaul it has installed...
I'm getting between 6-7.2 mbps down in Austin TX, with LTE provisioned in my at&t account and using the PTA APN.

Well, after getting tired of AT&T Data Throttling me to Edge speeds, And knowing that coverage is not 100% in my area, I went ahead and got the 69.99 Monthly Unlimited Everything Plan from T-Mobile ( I Was on ATT's Grandfathered in Unlimited plan etc cost around $120-130 Month) Now I'ts just $69.99.
Here are the results Keep in mind speeds will improve as coverage does as well. It's very sensitive at the moment if I move a few feet away signals lower and speeds vary depending on where I'm standing And in Certain parts of my house I have Edge, But if I move towards the bedrooms or living room it just picks up HSPA+ (Yeah it's funny how 20-50 feet make a huge difference) but it's very encouraging to say the least I expect when it's fully re farmed to be getting 15-20mbps down!
And without further a due here they are!

The Int'l Note 2 does not support 1700mhz AWS, correct. T-Mobile is, however, in the process of moving their HSPA+ service off of 1700mhz AWS over to 1900mhz instead so that they can use the (soon to be) old 1700mhz AWS band for LTE service.

T-Mobile....meh..
I was a long time customer of T-mobile, had the HTC Amaze 4G and Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile.
Saw speeds up to 15-17mbps in some very few parts, but the thing was.... it loaded pages and generally felt slower browsing and using the web than my friend's equivalent S2 on ATT and he only saw 3-5mbps in probably 90 percent of the locations we went to. Something was up with that...
When T-mobile is fast...it's very fast (which is very rare), but when it's slow, it's VEEEEERRRRY SLOW which was most all places.
Anyways, I'm very happy with my international GT-N7100 on ATT's HSPA.

ROM isn't the problem.
Try a different server in the Speedtest app. Here in Los Angeles, I get crappy speeds off all the local test servers, so I manually pick something like San Jose or Las Vegas and get a much more accurate speed measurement (read higher).
It's relatively all the same speeds no matter the server. Take a look.

Are you having the same issue everywhere or just by your house? There could be an issue with the cell tower itself. Something similar happened to me in 05- I had full signal but could not place or receive calls or get any data whatsoever on any of my phones. If I drove across town & connected to another tower, I had no issues. T-Mobile actually sent a rep out to my house to observe the problem & they had to come fix the tower by my house.

I guess you can go to the extreme of saying tmobile is lying to you, but in reality no they're not. "4g" just shows when data activity is happening. You are barely over edge speeds though. I would say try different radios and such and look at the map from this post and play around to see which will help you specifically. In the mean time put your phone to edge only so you stop wasting battery lol. [Baseband] ALL T999(V) Modems! w/ MAP and Data Tweaks!

They are misleading intentionally.
Start a big download and go to the dialer, input *#0011#. Take note of the band you are on (2 or 4) and which items have a 1 on them out of HSPA and HSDPA. If you are on band 2 and see a one next to either of those options, you can try forcing 1700 by using *#2263# and choosing it under WCDMA. This will cause you to lose service if you have poor 1700 coverage, particularly for voice calls but you can always set it back by going back to the main 2263 menu and hitting automatic.
If those don't work or you see zeroes have you gone into phone status to see if you have an IMEI? Because that will lock you to UMTS. Shortcut to find out - *#06#

I was assuming that you were on a TouchWiz ROM (these codes only work on the Samsung dialer) based on the fact that you had a 4G icon up there - if you're not on stock, there's not an easy way to troubleshoot. If you are on stock, you have to use the built in dialer, not a third party app.
Its worth the time to go to a TW ROM to try to troubleshoot it but if your IMEI came up fine then its less worth the hassle. Wish I could help you out more but it looks like you might be in a highly congested area on the network :/

T-Mo is not lying. You're still on their 4G network, but as someone mentioned, it's probably congested. Additionally, for most areas, T-Mo's 3G and 4G network is the exact same technology. If you're paying for the 4G service, they take the "speed limiter" off. Simple as that. Most likely a bad area of Cali for T-Mobile.

I'd like to see your sources for this because 3G UMTS, 3.5G HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+, and true 4G LTE are all different technologies. UMTS maxes out at 384Kbps, HSDPA ranges from 7 to 21Mbps, HSPA+ is up to 21Mbps but includes HSUPA for up to 5.76Mbps upload, and DC-HSPA+ is up to 42Mbps on the downlink with the same 5.76Mbps upload of standard HSPA+. 4G LTE can exceed 100Mbps.
While its true that they all operate off of wideband CDMA technology, they are NOT the same and require tower upgrades... T-Mobile does not discriminate based on your data plan. They discriminate based on your data usage compared to the plan you purchased and throttle you when you exceed what you paid for. Plain and simple.
Get your facts straight before you spout off nonsense.
EDIT: I am not aware if T-Mobile has deployed pico cells for UMTS anywhere but if they have, UMTS can go up to 2Mbps on a pico cell.

So I have the S4 now and I've been complaining to T-Mobile about the poor download speeds in neighborhood in Brooklyn, NYC as if I live in the boondocks. I finally got a response from T-Mobile saying that oh well it looks like there isn't enough bandwidth in your area and there's nothing you can do. Which is ironic considering the slew of ads they have bashing AT&Ts bandwidth and bragging how great they are (BS). See attached for the wonderful LTE speeds I get. And it's all the time as you can see, not based on time and the network being clogged up. I work in midtown Manhattan where between 10AM and 6PM the network is barely useable to which they said "well a lot of people are probably on it".
I'm surprised they didn't tell me to move somewhere else.
Basically I'm getting tired of all the LTE posts I'm seeing on here

That sucks, but like the other guy said, that's just regular 4G and not 4G LTE, big difference as I got a few patches of LTE here where I am, and it's at least 4 times faster for me,

Here's the so called LTE. Notice the upload speed is higher then the download so something is strange.

Thanks I'll look into this although like I said I was told I'd never get increased speeds due to the bandwidth.

Next year would be the time to start pitching the complaints just because they said at the end of 2013 it should be completely implemented but I've been with Tmobile from the beginning and they have bent over backwards to make me happy.
LTE is still in the beginning phase of being introduced so yes some people will be lucky enough to have early use but pitching a fit because your not one of the few that have it this early on is useless.

Is Brooklyn even one of the officially supported areas? Or is LTE on but not officially?
Even since they started rolling out LTE in my area my 4g has gone to crap. I get mostly the same speed as the OP now when I used to get 8mbps prior to LTE roll out. It happened at home and now its happening at my work. I really hate it cause inside my work I dont get LTE and just get 4g. And at home I get LTE a block a way but no LTE where my house is so I'm stuck with the new slower 4g.
Man. Those speeds you posted were faster than I usually used to get with Sprint. In the Chicago area, my last three T-Mobile tests are:
5644 kbps / 1590 kbps
7183 kbps / 1074 kbps
8036 kbps / 6006 kbps (LTE in moving train)
14983 kbps / 12024 kbps (LTE stable)
Not bad.

Not sure if this test is valid looks like you had WIFI on at the time.
You're getting low pings (66ms) and over 1Mbps, which is plenty for a mobile device IMO.
Did you try and change your apn to fast.tmobile.com? I had slow speed too then changed my apn now its back to good speeds

Same here the 4G used to be great and where I live if I go over a couple blocks it'll switch to LTE but my house is 4G with terrible speeds where I used to get 5-6mb. At my job in Manhattan I get LTE and the speeds are great (10mb+) until like 9AM when it goes down to 2-3mb but it gets to the point I can't even stream a YouTube video.

That test was at my job where I have no WiFi. The test was a previous test about a week ago. The Wi-Fi you see enabled is because I took a screenshot while at home this morning. The test is done on LTE if you look at the network type listed.

I have the HTC One on AT&T and SGS4 on TMO. I've found outside of AT&T's LTE area TMO being faster, but not always. AT&T seems more consistant everywhere I go, TMO, there's either drop to edte, no service, or killler speeds. I have not hate to either carriers, nor a fanboi of any of them nor any device.
Long story on why I have both, basically had to do with credits owned me on TMO and sales of older devices I had right out.

I don't think you get the point I was making, I could see being mad if LTE was out for a few years and your being told you should have it on Tmobile but it's just starting literally. This has nothing to do with att and their coverage but I've had att and Verizon in the past and no Cell carrier can promise perfect coverage.
