So if you want to tap while hovering. Get the s pen close to the screen and put your finger under the s pen tip and press the tip in. I just found out that the screen isn't the one recognizing the taps. The s pen has a sensor that tells the phone that it is touching the screen. Maybe many of you knew this but I just found out so wanted to share!

Neat! Even though you would have to practice to be able to do it well, since it is so tiny.
They should have added an extra button on the pen to do that action.
Ya I really wish they did. I been trying to find some kind of method to tap while hovering for a longggg time
I wish clicking the button on the S-Pen could function as a tap so I could browse like this...

That would be pretty cool.. It's probably just a matter of time here at XDA.
Actually I might get an extra pen & try to take this on. If the phone can register a click while hovering using your trick (which I tried and it definitely does), it should theoretically be possible to remap the hard-button to tap into the same trigger that the phone recognizes when the pen's tip is pressed. It's gonna be a ***** getting this pen apart but at least the button is close to the tip :good:.
If anyone knows where to get a note 2 pen for less than $50 let me know..
EDIT: Just discovered that if you hold your finger over the tip of the pen (keeping the tip depressed) you can scroll/tap/etc. when you're within an inch or two of the screen.. Intersting

No so. Those use Wacom or N-Trig digitizers. Does not work with Samsung technology. Believe me, that is the first thing I tried with my Bamboo pen as soon as I got my device.

The idea that I was thinking of, as a spin-off to the OP's comment, was having a pen modified so that you could just wave over the screen to move around within the OS and just tap the button to interact. Obviously it's not a game-changer but it would be fun playing some games or even swyping without having to touch the screen.
There might even be a way to modify a glove or something that works in a manner similar to kinect.. of course you'd have to be pretty close to the screen but still might be a fun little project to play around with.. Anyway, extra pen is on it's way.. we'll see where this goes.
I think you could just remove the s-pen button cover and adjust the sensitivity pot and achieve the same thing?
Prety neat trick consideringi have the invisable shield and the spen destroys it

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but another cool spen trick that I happened upon while hovering is switching from pen to eraser by clicking the spen button.
Since it looks like we are starting a Cool S-Pen thread here it works ridiculously well in splashtop and gives you a super responsive and accurate mouse
And as for figuring out a way to click without touching the screen it would probobly be easier to swap the input events rather than physically modding the pen

Wow that's a much better idea than the hardware mod I was thinking of.. I'm an absolute beginner at coding & hardware comes easily to me so I don't feel too stupid for not thinking of it.
Ideally I want to try & write an app that would give you the option of switching the preset input events on the fly so I could go from normal spen use to "hover" spen mode with an IME type notification or something.. Now where to begin

Does anyone know if the Galaxy S pen will work with our T-989 and if there is a way to port that software onto our phones or will it be included in our ICS update? The reason I ask is because i hate using my fingers to draw something in the drawsomething app. I love that app but would like to make my drawings better. So will the S pen be compatible???
I think the S pen is just like any other stylus..not sure tho..if you have some sort of stylus lying and try that and see if that works..

That is not correct. The S-Pen is a Wacom digitizer pen that does not work on a our compasitive screens. The wacom feature allows for pressure sensitive versus heat sensitive

No worries, Im a graphic artist and that was the first thing I wanted to know when it came out. There are a few youtube videos on that question.
I thought our phones screen responded to electrons.... Verified it with a battery, slide the positve side and nothing but when you slide the negative side of the battery on the screen it responds. So anyhting with a negative charge would work with the phone right?

That is interesting but I'm not sure I want to try so I'll take your word for it. And thanks everyone for the replies.....it's a little confusing to say the least. I was hoping for better news that would allow us to use a stylus. Maybe something will come up. Who knows.....
The note has two digotozers that allow for input through fingers and the s pen stylus. It has to be s pen because it is a different type of stylus so normal run off the mill styluses won't work. Same deal with us, but we only have one digitzer for input from finger only. So neither s pen nor stylus will work unless you get the one made for capacitive screens which are nit accurate at all.

So tell me how S-Pen really works? If i have understood right inside the S-Pen there is no battery? Yet still there is at least two switch at the pen (tip of the pen and side button) and also phone knows where you are hovering your pen even if you are not touching the screen. So how this all works?
This is interesting it would be cool to know that..

You need to first turn the option on in S Pen settings. It might not be turned on by default.
Then take your s-pen out, use it on the screen for a bit, leave it somewhere as you put your phone in your pocket and walk away. I had to walk like maybe 15 steps before it alerted me.

This part is very low tech.
When you have the pen in the device, it pushes a switch inside the phone.
If you pull the pen out (i.e. the switch is opened), and you wander off (it detects this using the same gyrometers you use to play 'tilt' games), then it sets off the alert.
You have to enable the s-pen alert, and the screen has to be off when you wander away.
It's designed that way so it's not constantly going off when you are actually using the s-pen.
the pen itself is a wacom pen. wacom tablets have been around for ages.
It receives power kind of the same way some electric toothbrushes charge - through magnetic resonance.

This. Samsung seems to be uing the Wacom principle. Ill hve to take my pen in and test it.
I still am not able to replicate it. S-pen settings look alright.
I'm really excited about the prospect of using this phone to replace my pad of paper at work, but I'm wondering if it works as well as advertised.
Is it possible to write small characters using the S Pen and S Note (or third party app)? In the reviews I've seen they always use gigantic letters when demonstrating S Note.
What happens if I rest my palm on the screen? Do I have to keep the pen close enough to the screen (so it detects it as hovering) to avoid picking up touches from my palm?
I used it to take our menu order last night for 9 of us without any issues if that helps?

U can write small letter, thre is a slider that can change how thick/thin the lines gonna be and also can rest u palm on the screen while using s-pen writing. Its a new features on Note 2, there is a icon at bottom right that can activate not to react while a palm touching the screen while using the s-pen. Search for spen in youtube and watch the magic of s-pen.

i have these cheap ones from amazon that work perfectly

I got one of the Bamboo Solo Stylus from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Bamboo-Solo-S...&qid=1369155435&sr=8-1&keywords=bamboo+stylus works really well.
I'm not sure what the brand is, but I got a pen/stylus from 5 Below that works really well. I'll upload a picture of the handwriting I did without any edits or anything. This was my first attempt.
What I really want is a stylus with a tip as slim as what Samsung uses in the Note 2. Unfortunately those will not work.

The only problem is that capacitive touchscreens require input to be the approximate width of a human finger in order to ignore random/incidental touches.

Did not know that. So I suppose Samsung does NOT use capacitive touchscreens then? (Never really dug to deep on the HOW things work, just appreciative when they do.)

I believe they actually have a second digitizer made by Wacom specifically to interact with the SPen. Not 100% Certain on the second digitizer, but I think I read that somewhere.

You don't have to activate stylus support. You're still limited to capacitive styli, so the S-Pen will not work for you.

It's possible that the stylus tip isn't wide enough for the screen to recognize it. Capacitive screens are calibrated to recognize touches the approximate size of a human finger, so it would need to be roughly the size of your pinkie finger to register as a valid touch.

I know there's the s-pen and the hardware buttons, however, I remember on the 10.1 note original there was a screen capture icon on the dock. Is there a way to get this feature back?.

Is there another way, its a bit hit and miss though more miss really to be practical.
Hold the power button down while also holding the raised home button. It will take a screen shot for you.
Its actually easier than you think! You have to use your whole Handheld edge resting on the screen.
When you get it, it is easier and faster than any other method.
