[Q] Can Galaxy Note 2 really be used for note taking? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm really excited about the prospect of using this phone to replace my pad of paper at work, but I'm wondering if it works as well as advertised.
Is it possible to write small characters using the S Pen and S Note (or third party app)? In the reviews I've seen they always use gigantic letters when demonstrating S Note.
What happens if I rest my palm on the screen? Do I have to keep the pen close enough to the screen (so it detects it as hovering) to avoid picking up touches from my palm?

I used it to take our menu order last night for 9 of us without any issues if that helps?

U can write small letter, thre is a slider that can change how thick/thin the lines gonna be and also can rest u palm on the screen while using s-pen writing. Its a new features on Note 2, there is a icon at bottom right that can activate not to react while a palm touching the screen while using the s-pen. Search for spen in youtube and watch the magic of s-pen.

Thanks for the info!

Did you consider buying the note 10.1?
I use it for note taking in lectures and the bigger screen is definitely an advantage there over my note 2!
Though the possible functions are nearly the same

Samsung S Pen Compatible with T-989

Does anyone know if the Galaxy S pen will work with our T-989 and if there is a way to port that software onto our phones or will it be included in our ICS update? The reason I ask is because i hate using my fingers to draw something in the drawsomething app. I love that app but would like to make my drawings better. So will the S pen be compatible???
I think the S pen is just like any other stylus..not sure tho..if you have some sort of stylus lying and try that and see if that works..
T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2
ROM: Juggernaut 5.0
That is not correct. The S-Pen is a Wacom digitizer pen that does not work on a our compasitive screens. The wacom feature allows for pressure sensitive versus heat sensitive
Thanks for the correction..wasn't to sure..my bad lol..Learn something new everyday..

Nope doesn't work, tried my bosses earlier this week

No worries, Im a graphic artist and that was the first thing I wanted to know when it came out. There are a few youtube videos on that question.
I thought our phones screen responded to electrons.... Verified it with a battery, slide the positve side and nothing but when you slide the negative side of the battery on the screen it responds. So anyhting with a negative charge would work with the phone right?

That is interesting but I'm not sure I want to try so I'll take your word for it. And thanks everyone for the replies.....it's a little confusing to say the least. I was hoping for better news that would allow us to use a stylus. Maybe something will come up. Who knows.....
The note has two digotozers that allow for input through fingers and the s pen stylus. It has to be s pen because it is a different type of stylus so normal run off the mill styluses won't work. Same deal with us, but we only have one digitzer for input from finger only. So neither s pen nor stylus will work unless you get the one made for capacitive screens which are nit accurate at all.

Note 10.1 S Pen looks pretty good

Details at the bottom of this page
I hope we can use the S Pen and all of it's functionality on our N7000s
It looks a bit more contoured and the eraser could be handy to not have to press an eraser button on the screen to erase.
I wonder if the ability to display a cursor when you hover is just a software thing that will work with our N7000 S Pens, or if the 10.1 S Pen has something extra?
The cursor is part of android 4.0 which the 10.1 has. And if you try one of the amazing ics roms for the n7k u will see the cursor.

Ah, cool. Thanks.
Looking at the ICS ROM comparison table in one of the other threads, it still seems there are a few bugs to iron out in all of the ROMs before all functionality is there.
I'll wait a little longer before upgrading to ICS.
It does more than 'help you aim' - it activates mouseover events. As far as I can tell, nothing but websites in the browser really support them, but It's something.
I like the fact that it's nice and big without having to put it in a pen case adapter thingy

I've been using a similar one that came with my thinkpad X61t tablet that I bought about 4 years ago. It's a Wacom pen.
I use it for note taking and occasional doodling, the eraser function also works with the S Memo app and a few others that I have tried.

Any leftys using the Note 2?

How is the experience of using the Note 2 from a left hander's perspective with regard to the S-pen, hardware buttons, etc? I've handled one at the AT&T store but couldn't get an accurate read on it due to the security tether, flip cover and huge stylus that didn't fit into the S-pen slot.
I do fine. You can go into the s pen options and set it to favor left handed. Also if you want to type one handed you can have the keyboard shifted to one side or the other

No complains here, everythin works fine. Only thing for us leftys is if we could have the spen on the left.

It's pretty effortless for me. I did notice the S Pen was a little "off" until I remembered the setting to optimize use for lefties. Now it's fairly flawless.
I'm a left hand user. My SPEN is very off. Is there like a recalibration tool or something. Its very annoying

I wish I could reverse the Back and Menu buttons, but other than that no problems.
I hate the location of the power button. I use the swift keyboard and have issue getting all the way over to the right side keys. I hardly have used the S pen. Always sucked when I tried. I'll go into the settings and muck around.
Not an s pen user so I can't speak to that, but getting to anything at the top right of the screen is a chore. I'm learning to hold the device differently though, and it's getting easier. So people really use the s pen?

Cool spen trick! Tap while hovering.

So if you want to tap while hovering. Get the s pen close to the screen and put your finger under the s pen tip and press the tip in. I just found out that the screen isn't the one recognizing the taps. The s pen has a sensor that tells the phone that it is touching the screen. Maybe many of you knew this but I just found out so wanted to share!

Neat! Even though you would have to practice to be able to do it well, since it is so tiny.
They should have added an extra button on the pen to do that action.
Ya I really wish they did. I been trying to find some kind of method to tap while hovering for a longggg time
I wish clicking the button on the S-Pen could function as a tap so I could browse like this...

That would be pretty cool.. It's probably just a matter of time here at XDA.
Actually I might get an extra pen & try to take this on. If the phone can register a click while hovering using your trick (which I tried and it definitely does), it should theoretically be possible to remap the hard-button to tap into the same trigger that the phone recognizes when the pen's tip is pressed. It's gonna be a ***** getting this pen apart but at least the button is close to the tip :good:.
If anyone knows where to get a note 2 pen for less than $50 let me know..
EDIT: Just discovered that if you hold your finger over the tip of the pen (keeping the tip depressed) you can scroll/tap/etc. when you're within an inch or two of the screen.. Intersting

That would be amazing. If you go on Samsung site, they have s-pens for $30 and there's a coupon that gives you 50% off if you register your note 2 on samsung website.

Just take a look around for any pen that works with a bamboo tablet digitizer thing (those writing pads for computers) from my understanding, as long as it works with that, then it'll work with the note 2

No so. Those use Wacom or N-Trig digitizers. Does not work with Samsung technology. Believe me, that is the first thing I tried with my Bamboo pen as soon as I got my device.

The idea that I was thinking of, as a spin-off to the OP's comment, was having a pen modified so that you could just wave over the screen to move around within the OS and just tap the button to interact. Obviously it's not a game-changer but it would be fun playing some games or even swyping without having to touch the screen.
There might even be a way to modify a glove or something that works in a manner similar to kinect.. of course you'd have to be pretty close to the screen but still might be a fun little project to play around with.. Anyway, extra pen is on it's way.. we'll see where this goes.
I think you could just remove the s-pen button cover and adjust the sensitivity pot and achieve the same thing?
Prety neat trick consideringi have the invisable shield and the spen destroys it

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but another cool spen trick that I happened upon while hovering is switching from pen to eraser by clicking the spen button.
Since it looks like we are starting a Cool S-Pen thread here it works ridiculously well in splashtop and gives you a super responsive and accurate mouse
And as for figuring out a way to click without touching the screen it would probobly be easier to swap the input events rather than physically modding the pen

Wow that's a much better idea than the hardware mod I was thinking of.. I'm an absolute beginner at coding & hardware comes easily to me so I don't feel too stupid for not thinking of it.
Ideally I want to try & write an app that would give you the option of switching the preset input events on the fly so I could go from normal spen use to "hover" spen mode with an IME type notification or something.. Now where to begin

Does the tab S 8.4 support pencil input like the S5

As the title says. The S5 I believe has a setting which allows to change the screen sensitivity so that the the screen can register a pencil tip touch or any conducting material with a reasonable fine nib.
I am weighing up whether to get the tab S 8.4 but stylus input is important to me. I know it won't be as accurate or functional a proper stylus like the note series but it will be sufficient for my needs.
Thanks

First.. Thank you Never thought that this "feature" existed!
Second, MY EXPERIENCE (I have one TAB S 8.4):
You don't need to activate the screen sensitivity (nethertheless, for the tests I activated) because for this I felt it's was the same:
1. If you are using a back of a metal pen or pure graphite it detects, but it isn't funcional... seconds later, it loses detection... don't know why...
2. With a metal clip, it works better... Just try to bend it and somehow atatch it to a pencil... (remember to touch some part of the clip while writing, and I don't know, soften the tip?...)
So.. I think the answer is NO...

There's no such setting in the S5. It's a Sony Xperia feature in one of their models I believe.
Thanks for replies
.
The S5 does have pencil input. A search on google shows this feature. For example http://bgr.com/2014/04/18/10-galaxy-s5-tips-and-tricks/
And this video demonstates it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bhru3qqwkFg
The use of a pencil on the tab S was appearently confirmed by a member here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/tab-s-able-to-s-pen-t2853933/page2 . See post #18
So at this moment I am still hopeful the tab S might take pencil input, (thanks arkha for trying). Could other members give it a go to confirm.
Try using a blunt pencil, no thinner than a 3mm nib works on the sony Z Ultra I think
