Samsung Nexus S boot, recovery, download mode... problems - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Dear all,
I'm sorry if it is not the good place to ask help but i search a solution on forum, blog, google... and i'm blocked.
I have a samsung nexus s which coulnd't boot. It stay with "Google" on screen.
I try to find the recevory mod, in order to make a factory reboot, but the recovery mod is broken also. The little android robot is open with a red exclamation mark.
I have this information on the boot menu :
Fastboot mode
Product Name : HERRING
HW Version : REV 52
Bootloader version : I9020XXLC2
Baseband version : I9020XXKI1
Carrier Info : EUR
SERIAL number : xxxxxxx
Lock State : Locked
I try a method with ODIN, i try to root the phone, but the system is shut. ODIN failed, the root also failed even if the phone is half reconized with the kies samsung driver.
So i don't know what to do now... lose the information isn't a problem, i just want a working phone.
Someone could help me?
Thanks a lot,
pS: i'm french, sorry for my english

I'll help you by reminding you that this isn't the Nexus S section.

Then they are no experts either. Two completely different devices that don't have anything in common other than being a Nexus made by Samsung.

Galaxy nexus on the left nexus s on the right.

dont worry bro
All you need to do is a hard reset your phone or you can use the Downloader (hardware, very cheap) to get bootloader into your phone.Actually you have crashed your bootloader. Then in bootloader using Downloader .try to flash your phone using SP flash tool or some other .Trying to use KIES is total wastage as Google Nexus s doesnt support Kies.

Hi all , i am an all time huge google fan but when the time i lost my last google phone i was force to use a crappy phone for the past 5months , and now my dad finally agreed to buy the Nexus for me ...AND I AM TOTALLY GOING OVER THE MOON!!
but then i decide to instantly get root access and get some great roms when i get the phone and i have to be cautious because i killed my w8 in the past so ...i have some doubts in my mind , so can anyone answer them ? just to be on the safe side
1.Is there any precautions before i root my nexus ? like checking the manfacture date etc ...
2.i've seen a lot of preks paranoid android seems to offer and let say i wanted to flash this rom can i learn everything from this video ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72Ow-YQeex4 like how to root etc
3 . does nexus comes preloaded with a stock recovery ? if so how do you enter it ?
4 . how safe it is to root the nexus ? how prone it is to bricking from the scale of 1 to 10?
so thanks
Are you getting the gsm or cdma ?

Yep that it is I have done every thing flashing wise with this phone and have yet to brick it.
unlike the droid 3 the nexus is almost unbrickable in my book.
But that still does not mean it can't be done tho.

Gratz ! i am getting mine in maybe some time but i am getting prepared for it!
very hard to brick this baby.soft-bricked at least 30 times, sometimes,a reflash of rom is all you ave to do,other times instead i had to restock the phone using fastboot due to big probs or a bad recovery.fastboot is simple to use, google for it and its commands to use.if you are totally noob, use the galaxy toolkit from mskip in top of development section.never tried odin's methods but works for sure (hate it,and it's very useless in a google phone like gnex.we have fastboot that is way more good and more powerfull when you learn commands to use.
If you want to only root, use the toolkit writed above.it's a easy opeartion,if anything goes wrong, you redo that without problems.before the root i think you have to oem_unlock the bootloader fisrt (always with toolkit)
Isn't Odin the father of Thor
Before you flash or root or do anything to your phone you are going to need to check the wiki's and stickies pinned at the top of each forum. You will need to determine which model of the Nexus you have, more than likely you will have the GSM i9250 version , but then there are different software versions of the Nexus, Yakju/takju etc. Once you have that all figured out make sure you read the OP for every rom you wan to flash and atleast the first and last 10 pages and you should be good. Pay special attention to the details enumerated in the OP's of each rom tho they are mostly installed in the same manner.
- Cheers

Tohno...so good to see you again. Ur the brick guy in X8 forum.
Answers:
1. To root ur phone, make sure u have all the correct drivers needed. No neednto check manufacturer code.
2. Nexus is the easiest phone to be used to flash custom rom. This is bcoz u can flash kernel just by using .zip file.
3. There is stock recovery, however, it is recommended to use CWM. U can enter recovery by pressing power+vol up and vol down together when turning on the phone, and then u can navigate through there to get to recovery
4. In scale 1-10, u pick 1 coz this is a developers phone, less worry, happy flashing.
U will get the gsm version. Most malaysians use 3g, its kinda the basic connection rite now...seriously tohno, its like 9 months since i last saw u,learn a little
Good luck with the new phone and hope u dont brick it..

Just do it manually. It's only a handful of steps, and then if something goes wrong, you'll know where it went wrong and have an idea of where to start fixing it.
There's a sticky at the top of this forum that gives detailed step-by-step instructions.

BRICK

HI I HAVE A GALXY 2 GT-I9100. IFLASHED CWM TOUCH AND I THINK IT BRICK THE PHONE OUT BECASUE OF THE KERNAL NOW I CANT DO ANYTHING CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO GE TI BACK UP
FIRST I DID THIS ONE

THEN WHEN I COULDNT GET A ROM TO FLASH AND GET IT TO COME BACK UP I TRIED THIS
http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-ha...-on-galaxy-s2/
AND IT STILL DIDNT WORK
Ok first off if you have a I9100 you are in the wrong forum because judging by your profile it says you have tmobile. This is the forum for the sprint variant with the model number d710. The forum I think you are looking for is here
Edit: I saw that you actually did post there... and it looks like you need to try this link below. My bad.

ok there is no coming back from a true brick... So if it wont turn on or your pc wont recognize it then yes it is truly bricked and you may need to contact JTag service which I hear is like $50. Also you are in the wrong forum for your phone. I would post this in the GALXY 2 GT-I9100 forum and see who can help you

What happens when you press the power button? Does it say galaxy s2? If so you should be able to get the phone into download mode and do an odin restore of ff18 that I'm linking below. Its a one click and is pretty easy if you just follow the instructions.

What you probably did is flashed the i9100 kernel which screwed your phone since the boot loader is now corrupted.

[Guide] Restore you phone to factory by Samsung Kies. Works on most Samsung units.

I see a lot of post asking :"How to restore phone to factory ?".I always do this way after i backup all i need and important data from my phone.
I use Samsung Kies. They can be find HERE
1. Start Kies
2.Click Tools-> Firmware upgrade and initilazation
3.Type in model of your phone for example AT&T is : SGH-I747 ( all in capital letters) click OK. In some cases letter after number can be small. In example for Samsung Galaxy S3 Rogers you can try SGH-I747m.
4.Then type serial number off the stcker under battery also in capital letters click OK
5.There will be info about firmware click OK
6.Info about software version. Put your phone in download mode by pressing volume down key, home button and power button then connect to PC using orginal USB cable, click OK
7. Follow info on screen.
8. Phone will reboot by itself when all is done correctly.
Enjoy virgin phone llike from store. In some cases you will need to do OTA upgrade after all of this.
Good luck
EDIT: I notice that sometimes you don't have to put phone in to download mode at all. Just connect and do step 2.
EDIT2 : If you update to 4.3 by OTA or if you install 4.3 bootloader on ATT S3 (I747) DO NOT USE THIS METOD. You will brick your phone.
Good write up! Looks straightforward enough but you never with all the strange cats here

You can do this as long as you can get to download mode. Don't need to download any rom, patches etc. Kies will do this for you as long as you type correct model number and serial in window box when asked.

So this seems to be working.
Note: You do have to use the serial number from under the battery. Some custom ROMs have a false SN in the about menu.
I am almost done with all the steps.
1 more note. Keep in mind that this method will inform Samsung of your custom rooting. Like it or not it does. I dont mind, but some might.
Thanks for the write up.

i747 Hard Bricked: QHSUSB - DLOAD : Needing a debrick.img

SGH-I747 (4.1.2 i747's please)/ SGH-i747m( If you have a official 4.3 i747m, please post a debrick.img) only:
Hi, I recently hard bricked my phone into QHSUSB DLOAD and I am going to attempt repairing it through the SD Card boot method.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=47431259
I need a debrick.img to flash to the SD card in a Linux OS.
I would have gotten it myself but my phone is obviously dead. I found one before on XDA, but it did not work on my device and it gave me an error in the Linux terminal when it should not have.
-snip-
The end of the 3rd boot-loader stage in mmcblk0 is at 77.3 megabytes. If you are going to help out using your device, try to refrain from uploading an image with a different ROM other than root.
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/backup.img bs=2m count=81054925
The count is the amount of bytes. I am not sure if it is meant to be 1000 bytes=kilobyte or 1024 bytes=kilobyte. The count above is for 1024.
I need someone to install the Galaxy S III unified toolkit, and pull the first 7 partitions from mmcblk0 ,which is where the third bootloader stage ends.(Don't upload a heavily modified device please) http://www.skipsoft.net/?page_id=213 Once you get the files, PM me.
If anyone has a link to a working one, please post that. If you want to get your own image to help me, go ahead.
Thanks guys.

I tried to unlock what I thought was a locked bootloader(I could only enter bootloader through ADB)
I found an article that says ezunlock works on all S III's.
It corrupted my bootloader, and my phone gives off no signs of life except "Device QHSUSB-DLOAD not recognized" when plugged in.
This means the motherboard/processor wasn't able to boot from the hard disk, so then it tries the SDcard if it matches the phone close enough.
I need someone to use their rooted i747 to dump the first 77.3 megabytes of "mmcblk0". That contains the firmware and bootloaders. With that, i can burn it to an sdcard in a linux operating system and plug it into my phone.

Thanks for that link! It looks very promising, and I can probably find a stock boot.IMG in there. I will work on tomorrow. If I succeed, I'll edit the OP and make a debrick guide for this drvice forum. A word of advice, try not to mess with your bootloader or you end up like me

find a download link for this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665 (samsung galaxy s3 toolkit) which can help you fix your phone
if that does not help take it to mobiletechvideos.com and they will fix it for you REASONABLE PRICE
its XDA you will get the help you deserve PLUS i have never encounted that kind of problem HOPE TO GOD IDONT but again am sure an SD-CARD that can write firmware/system IS VALUABLE/USEFULL compared to nothing and that means there is hope left to fix bad code

Hi, the toolkit didn't fix my phone, but its defiantly a step up. Since I'm assuming you have the toolkit installed that you suggested it, could you do me a favor?
It will be a bit easier using the toolkit to extract the partition files. If you could pull the first 7 partitions from "mmcblk0" of your device through the toolkit, it will probably set the next step to fix my phone. (Assuming you have a 16g i747... I don't really know)
You don't have to do this of course.
Thanks man.
Bump. Can anyone help out? All I need is the first 7 partitions.

it will work, it may not work but for the time being use this toolkit and also search forums or Google on how to fix this without, i think i found some answers after i had an emmc brick with my S2 but i did not have an SD card to re-write firmware to work again on my phone so i bought the S3 and its awesome

Did you use an i747 or a i747m device?
If a i747m image works on an i747, it will basically fix all of my problems.

What message appears on your computer when you plug it in?
If it says QHSUSB-DLOAD, you are in faint light.
It stands for Qualcomm High Speed USD Download Mode.
What is means that your processor(qualcomm), is trying to boot, but it cannot find proper drivers for the hardware.
It will then look for something to boot from in the SDcard.
Here is a thread on how some other people were able to do it : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2439367
I have an I747M technically. I went for an actual I747M image just in case there was a slight difference. in the thread that one came from though there should be one for the actual att device if you look through it.
and just to confirm, yes the phone was blank and unresponsive. showing up as QHSUSB-DLOAD before i loaded that img onto my external SDcard. and I am using the same phone currently.

Unfortunately that's the download I found that didn't work.
Thanks for trying though
damn! the only other help I can offer then, is that there is a pretty good thread on this over in the d2tmo section. someone there wrote a little tool to easily download the relevant data. might help you on your quest. or at least make it so you could ask someone that doesnt know ADB. best of luck!

OK , take out your battery and tell me your model number(Behind battery). And what phone company do you use?
Did you possibly save a NANDROID on a computer?
( if you have i747m, you can fix your phone, but its hard to do( I havnt done it yet)
Download this image http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46258374&postcount=172 (thanks to @Bradkirk )
Follow these directions using that image above^^^ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2439367
You need to install a Linux operating system (Ubuntu works) to run the commands.
Edit:! According to the T-Mobile thread, you might need a debrick.IMG from a phone on 4.3
Once I know your phones model number, I can edit the main post and ask for you phone model's images.

Hi.
Unfortunately bricked my nexus 7 K008,
I am able to go to fast boot but then when I try to load recover the tab gets stuck on Google logo.. This brick happend during update to new firmware.
I have tried the 1 key tool to try to restore to any kind of ROM but the device doesn't show up.
please point me in the right direction. As I have tried many different searches but all pointing to the one click tool which will only work if I can get my tab to turn on.
All help is appreciated.

You did not brick your nexus 7. Flash the factory image with fastboot. Do not use toolkits.

There is no nexus 7 version, fastboot is fastboot. Motorola has a modified version (xda'ers call it mfastboot) that alters file size restrictions but even that one works with all devices. All that said, the link that khaytasus posted ^ has what you need.
