Help chosing a custom rom - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, have given my self a sgs note 2 (3g) for christmas and i like the big screen.
Now i want to use a custom rom, after using google i don't know which one to try (have omega rom on my sgs 3) here is want i like:
Lag free phone (as close to an iphone as possible, but with more cpu,ram reserves)
Just the basic's, a choice to install what i want, so i don't have to uninstall apps after a custom rom has been installed
Themes, baggrunds that look amazing with lots of colours or just a basic theme
The apex launcher thing where i have an icon like power amp where i can ad another mediplayer, not next to power amp or above
but as part of power amp, so when i open power amp i can choose from the other mediaplayers that i have added (hope you know what i mean)

What's the best custom ROM?
This is an awkward question. All custom ROMs are good and this depends on ur personal preference. I would say CM9 will be the best if all the bugs fixed.
If u wan to have its full performance, ROOT it. There are lots and lots of apps for root users, so u should try them out urself. ROMtoolbox will give u a good control of a rooted SGW.
In short, trying and learning are the best ways.

True words. There is not THE ROM out right now in my opinion, so I would advice you to start of with stock and root access. Than once you familiar with it and still not satisfied, start with the first custom ROM.
CM9 is really awesome, but the camera doesnt work and has a few bugs. Here again, it depends on your personal requirments, some badly need there camera, some don't mind.
With Apps it is pretty much the same. You have to go and search for your personal requirments. Maybe I'll make later a list for you with my recommended apps.

i see, i'm still on the way on experimenting this stock rom and i'm contented for now. i'm not on hard core gaming and i just want this phone to run games just decently like temple run, and i also want to know why do people overclock to improve the 1.4ghz to 1.6ghz? does it really matter? i mean its the processor that makes the difference as far as i know even if it improves its still be the same because it has only single processor right? and thanks THE-E i read almost all of your post and i thank you for trying to make a list of recommendations

Custom ROM may have customized kernel, different way of multitasking which "should" improve phone performance. Other thing like deodexed, zipaligned which should improve the speed of the ROM.
Some other obvious mods like
1. customized framework-res which gives u a better appearance
2. extended power menu which let u have more options like reboot
3. toggles buttons on status bar which works similar to extended menu
...and more
However, quite a lot of ppl still stick to stock ROM as its overall performance is still very good.
For example, I am using Cow V2, when playing temple run, it is a bit laggy; while my gf is using stock ROM, temple run is running smoothly w/o any lagging.

i see, i really should stay on stock for a while and try all things before i try custom roms, thanks for the explanations i appreciate it
also i do want to know how good this camera can be and the videos, as far i as i tested its just normal and gives a decent quality for me, or is it not? can you guys say your thoughts about its features if its worth it or not.
Generically why dun you google it at youtube....plenty of video previews.
I bought my first android after going thru the previews at the same channel.
The reason I bought the SGW was due the fact....
. The price is reasonable
. The CPU speed is fast
. And of course ICS CM9 by a Developer whose ROM I had used before on my first Android
Just to add too I never went thru a video preview before deciding on purchase.
And to my suprise four of my friends bought the same....coz they knew what I could do with it...

i did actually, but honestly what i saw on youtube reviews are all pros and no cons, i mean they just show how good it was but when a real user posts his/her experience then there comes the cons. thats why i want to know what on real other users. in some forums they say that the camera fails as well as the video and i just want to confirm it, in gaming i know its not the best coz of the single processor but i somehow want it because im not into hardcore gaming.

im using the same phone you are using mate and i think i just need to do it step by step to know personally what things are not decent on this phone. thanks for the reply i got 1 more question mate, do changing the ROM can really improve the performance of the phone? i mean its only customized right? what things do you like on that CM9? some says they use Cow, whats the difference?
All the ROMS here are based on Gingerbread n using the very same kernel created by arco68 n some of the kernels have been modified.
If you wanna know the full capability of the SGW I suggest you try CM9 ICS which is the only IceCream Sandwich made...still in Alpha Release n modifications still being carried out...
Where is your originated country ? BTW ?

These Apps are good for performance.
JuiceDefender improves the performance of the batter life.
Gemini App Manager lets you block autostarts of Apps and more.
NoMedia let you set the folders with media, this will save time for the start up and also safe battery, because the media scanner does not search all directories.
RAM Mananger Pro optimises the RAM management, this improves the performance of my SGW a lot. But most probably you will not need this, if you use CM9 or other custom ROMs.

Have tried it, didn't bring the promised performance boost. But try it out and make your own opinion.
For me, RAM Manager Pro made my Stock ROM much smoother than SuperCharger.

Guys I just have a simple question (I'm kinda new to these)

Hey guys I have galaxy w (I bought it 10 or 12 days ago).Don't worry i studied my lesson.I know how to root, flash, install apk etc.
I rooted my phone and installed REM ICS.But i'm not happy with it.Because it has a few problems
In the first place, i want to tell you what i'm looking for.
I just want proper sms app (no mms converting), WORKING gps, menu customization [not by date or title (i'm happy with touchwiz)]
Most important -> goot battery life. That's all folks.
But i can't find a rom that meets my wishes.
Now i'll install rebel rom 3.0.6.
But if you have a recommendation PLEASE let me know.
p.s. : I'm sorry if there are grammar mistakes. Thanks in advance. :good:
CyanogenMod Alpha 8 version should be good to you
but you have the SMS to MMS converter on everyrom (i think) & touchwiz
but normally in options you can adapt it
good batterylife & performance
Or BioHazard has it all (based on cyanogenmod)
just flash the ROM + extra sms file (to get normal sms lay-out) - Biohazard customisation - good batterylife & performance (& touchwiz)
has jellybean 3 features & customisation
EhndroiX is a nice rom based on cyanogenmod
but it has it flaws, batterylife isn't perfect but it's a smooth ROM
it also has touchwiz and Jellybean lay-out
Personally i'm running EhnDroix right now but i'm thinking to switch to cyanogenmod (due to the better batterylife) or biohazard
Now about the GPS function you can use Google Maps / Navigation, you can also download Sygic GPS (look on some forums for a "free" version of it )
then you will have a free offline GPS system with TomTom maps navigation
i hope i helped you out a bit

Ps. Click on thank you button if i helped you
Ive been using SGW for a lot of time now, when i had the stock rom i used ADW laucher for the menu. As for the battery life, keep 3G turned off or install JuiceDefender, it turns on 3g every X minutes, instead of keeping it on all the time. It also adjusts the brightness. My battery would last nearly 3 days that way with moderate calling.
Hugs.
Also i wonder if there is something wrong with my original samsung charger. When i charge my phone with its original charger, battery drains quickly (%85 in 2.2 hours). But when i charge it with my friend's htc's charger it downs to %97 in 2 hours.Just weird.

As I know Rebel ROM is not coming with a TW launcher, you may try Black Notes Last Page if you wish, it came with a TW launcher, just for your info, in Black Notes, you would have to reboot your phone after running the 99SuperCharger init.d script, as it may cause you unable to receive your message, but it wouldn't really affect you if you don't run the script. Hope it helps.

Are you using the USB cable as charger? That one will be much slower than the charger. For a decent battery life, I would recommend you to use a GB ROM with Juice Defender at this moment, because the battery life for CM9 may be vary from version to version at this moment.
I use its original charger (mini USB).I installed rebel rom it seems like it's okay. But i'm not sure yet.
Ok it sucks more i know it now.SMS problems, slow browsers, performance sucks
Looking for good battery life? Most of the GB roms provide good battery life. Not so sure with ICS roms, right now. If you don't mind using GB rom, i would recommend you MUTANT ROM, not bad.

If you are looking for an economical premises ROM battery GB ROM only the best in my opinion.
I myself have come back to GB after I felt in CM9 b8 only for reasons of battery.
I myself use kezra v4 final ROM, kernel xxlm8. And what you need everything works fine here.

Also, try upgrading baseband. Older baseband might have bugs that made it too aggressive and/or not smart enough to tune power usage.
Back in the CM9 thread, someone posted that he experienced a great boost in battery life after upgrading baseband.
Word of caution: make sure that the newer baseband is compatible with your country's networks.

[Q] Best SPEN/Stock ROM?

Well I flashed my Note II before ever trying the SPEN out... I'd like to flash a ROM that supports the Samsung app store as well as the SPEN but I like some of the options that are offered in AOKP roms is there anything that is the best of both worlds or close?
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
Update: I found it!!
Hi all,
I think I've found my new all time favorite ROM and its stock!
The ROM is called: [ROM][2/15][N7105XXDMB3 ULTIMATE] Best International Stock ROM for i317 Variants
Located at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2016575
I like this ROM because of the following options:
- Custom Themes (the blue one is almost as nice as the Cobalt theme I was running on AOKP)
- S-Pen Support
- S-Note
- Samsung App's
- Dual Camera Apps (Samsung camera app and 4.2.1 Nexus camera with sphere mode)
- Call Recording (Baked in)
- Very nice installer (when flashing from a recovery)
- Tablet DPI (for split screen on email and settings also makes calendar show whats going on in month view rather than colored bars!)
- ~25 Toggles (for everything you could want imho better than 4.2.1's)
- Audio DSP's (EQ profiles)
- No Bluetooth bug like other custom ROM's!
- Every stock Samsung option is working (S-Beam, All-Share, One Handed Operation)
- ETC...
IMHO more options and settings than AOKP/CM/PA
This is just off the top of my head after using it for 2 days... Its a very impressive ROM to say the least I am also getting the best battery life yet! (~6hrs screen on 15hrs total) and that's heavy use Wi-Fi always on Bluetooth on GPS on and 3G when not connected to Wi-Fi)
I also did speed tests on my Nexus 4 using the same SIM at the same place and the N4 toped out around 4-6Mbps download and 1-1.2Mbps upload where has the Note II is getting 12-15Mbps down and 2-5Mbps up so why would i change to LTE? (these results were not a one day fluke thing it was a routine test over a week on both phones)
If anyone has tried this ROM and know of and even better more feature filled stock rom with s-pen support feel free to post below!

Most people will probably tell you to start trying them all out. Different people have different opinions and different views.
Current Devices: At&t Samsung Galaxy Note, Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Asus Google Nexus 7 Super Tablet
Current Roms: Skynote 7 (Note 2), AOKP (Galaxy Nexus), Nexus 7 Stock
I would start with CleanROM, gonna be as close to stock as possible.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
Well from my experience, there is not a ROM that offers "the best of both", at least in regardsyou are looking for. The AOKP-ish rom that I tried, "JellyBam" still had the hover functionality of the SPen (without the hover marker), but not SNote, Quick Command, etc. I have never used the Samsung App Store, as it is redundant to me.
I am not sure what AOKP features that you are looking for in particular though.
All the roms here are solid. Just try them out and see which one you like.
OG Note ii running JDevil
I have cleanrom and only have lost the snote popup functionality that opens the actual app. I still get the standard snote popup so that i can write down a message if that makes any sense.

[Q] New to Galaxy Note II

So I am switching from the Galaxy Nexus to the Galaxy Note II and I'm curious about a few factors.
First question: what is the developer name of the Verizon Galaxy Note II? Nvm. Found out it is t0lte
Second Question: As for using the s-pen and 'two apps on the same screen' and any other features that are note specific do I have to use a touchwiz rom? or can I use another rom and have the features included
You have to use touchwiz based ROM to get multiwindow features. And if you want floating multiwindows (like as in real PC like windows where you can open numerous windows w/ minimize/close button and everything) try out Moon Rom or X-Note which has the feature pre-installed. Or flash the X Note mod over touchwiz based ROM.
Hello! I know where you're coming from.
If you are fond of the S-pen and you want the full experience with that then you have to probably stay with Touchwiz. I tried out Touchwiz too for some while and it's not bad and compared to non-Touchwiz roms the camera is the best and in most cases so is the battery. Not to forget if you really want to have all the Samsungs apps then there's no way around using TW.
Although, seeing you come from a Nexus, I can imagine you miss the AOSP feeling. After some experimenting with roms and kernels I mostly got disappointed about the batterylife in AOSP roms and about the lack of some decent S-pen functionality (and recognition when you pull it out / put it back in).
After some research I finally found (my personal) perfect combination. AOSP, good batterylife (like TW), and S-pen functionality combined with it.
My setup is using thor's rom with thor's kernel, unfortunately (for reasons I will not elaborate on, if you really want to know you can use search) his topics are banned from XDA, however you can find his work here. I highly recommend it, it's the best AOSP experience you can get on your Note 2. Rock stable, extremely fast (feels even faster and smoother than a Nexus 4), everything works, and good batterylife.
Another AOSP rom I can recommend is "CarbonRom", extremely smooth too and the optional carbon theme is really nice, I'd still recommend using thor's kernel with it for the provided speed and battery life.
As for the S-pen functionality on AOSP I recommend you would install "CM S Pen Add-on" for detection and "Note Buddy" to choose what app you want to launch when you pull out your S-pen (I recommend Papyrus).
If for some reason you still want to stick with a TW rom I would recommend ARHD (closest to stock and very stable) or, as stated above already, Moon Rom if you want some nice extra features like multiple floating windows.. For TW roms I recommend Adam Kernel.
This should keep you busy already for a while, let us know what you tested and how you find it
Thanks to both of you. I should have plenty to test and play around with now. Ill try out a few different things and see what I like. A friend of mine recommended the beans rom. So i think I will try that out first. but its good to know that i need touchwiz to get the note2 exclusive things.
Thanks guys! :good:
especially wtr_dhd. That was very detailed =)
Im looking forward to when my note arrives
Oh and one last question what button combination reboots me into recovery?

Not really a direct answer to your question, but this way works always and 100%, install Rom Manager from Play (needless to say you need to be rooted), and via there you can reboot into recovery, it will even suggest you to install the latest CWM if you like (which I highly recommend)!

Volume up + home button + power button.
Welcome to the Note 2, as a former gnex user I can safely say that you will love this device.

Spent a full day figuring that out... Thought the volume down + home + power was the one.
Sent in lighting speed...

Looking for ROM Recommendations based on my use profile.

Hey All!
So my Nexus 4 took a big spill the other day that put it out of commission and i had to go to T-Mobile to get another phone. Last month i looked into the phones that were on the market (because my friend lost hers and i was helping her pick out a phone) and the choices we came down to were Nexus 6, Galaxy S5, and LG G3. Well She ended up finding her old phone but from that research i knew which one i wanted to get. I really like the nexus series but 6 inches is a deal-breaker for me, my biggest complaint about this LG G3 is that its too big...
In any case, i have had the phone for about one day but i can't stand the LG ROM on it. It feels slow (even with 3GB of RAM in this thing!) and I really don't like all the bloat ware the Tmobile put on my phone.
I like the stock android experience and want to find one that comes pretty close to it (although extra features are always a plus). Here is what I prioritize in my phone (starting with highest priority and going down:
-Stable, First and foremost i cannot stand a crash, i hate hate hate it. I need the ROM to work just as well (if not better) than the stock android ROMs on the nexus line
-Working Hardware, i take a bunch of pictures and am constantly using mobile data (4G LTE) so i need all these to work well
-Battery Life, I play games a lot on my phone during the day when waiting around for the bus or whatever, i like to have my battery last as long as possible so i don't need to break out a portable charger.
-Responsive, i don't need to have a ton of crazy amazing features, but i do want it to be responsive, nothing peeves me more than having input lag when texting someone.
-Customizability, i really do enjoy the fact that i can change the home buttons on that appear on the bottom of the screen on the LG G3 ROM, its a nice touch to be able to tap a button to get your notifications to pull down (especially on such a large phone), so customizability of small features like that go along way with me, small things like being able to see the day next to time i really love.
-Lastly i like to have my phone flat on my desk a lot and with the button on the back the best way to turn it on is the double tap, so if possible (but not necessary) i would like to retain that feature.
Some ROMs i have been looking at and read reviews but cant really decide which to try are Cyanogen Mod 12, Illusion, and PurpleDrake.
Based on my user profile (what is most important to me) which ROMs (can be one of the ones i listed or whatever one you think works best) would you recommend.
Also is flashing a custom kernel very popular on the LG G3? I know it was on the nexus 4 but is it also beneficial on this device?
Last, is there a good instruction on xda for rooting and unlocking the bootloader (and possibly flashing a custom recovery) for the LG G3 D851 (The specific one i have)?
Your best bet is to get a stock-based ROM then install Xposed + some modules to customize it to your liking. A really good stock ROM is CloudyG3. It will give you all the stock features like IR remote, good camera app, double tap to wake, WiFi calling etc. I recommend getting a 3rd party launcher that allows you to set gestures. I use Nova Launcher and have "swipe down" open up the notification drawer. CM12 and other AOSP-based ROMs are probably smoother and faster but they will be more prone to crashing and lack stock features (though double tap to wake is in all).

Thanks so much for your input! What is xposed? Is is an app that you install after flashing the ROM or is it something like GAPPS which your flash during installation of your ROM? Where can i find more information on what Xposed is and how it provides features?
Why do you say that my best bet is a stock-based ROM over an AOSP one?

Basically, Xposed is a framework that allows you to install/remove codes (modules) on-the-fly. Easy to install. More info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/xposed-faq-issues-t2735540
Stock-based over AOSP because of your preferences lol. They're generally more stable and let you take advantage of ALL of the G3's hardware.

Do you know any specific problems that AOSP have with the G3 hardware over the Stock? I am really looking to get rid of bloatware and increase responsiveness and battery life. I just get this weird feeling like the stock ROM is slooooooow.
Also does the Xposed framework load down the phone at all? I feel with each module i install it would get progressively slower with all the stuff running in the background. Doesnt seem very lightweight after having the cloudyG3 installed i should have a ton of features (since its stock and not AOSP). seems like it would lag down it even more.
I'm just looking for a stable ROM with a decent set of features (i don't need anything too crazy) that is responsive (i feel with 3GB of RAM i shouldnt have to deal with lag anymore) and has a decent battery life (3000mAh is a lot, even with the large screen). What can you guys recommend based on that simply details?

I totally agree. Stock based +xposed over cm any day for stability.

What about Battery life? I want to get at least 4-6 hours SOT. Is that possible with stock?
