boot into stock recovery / factory reset ( you will loose your data setup )
You don't need to do any boot into recovery stuff. I get this message every now and again (bone stock). Just reboot your phone and it's gone for a while.
Apparently Samsung is hyper-sensitive about their file system and if the root checker gets even slightly tripped, you get this message. Just do a simple reboot and it fixes it.
Did you disable any default apps ?
It happened with me too and was fixed by resetting to factory defaults which was annoying.
Also memory cards are suspected to change device status, check this thread.

I just got this phone today and I had the same problem, what I did was remove the memory card and reboot the phone, after this my device status was normal and I was able to update the phone.

Maybe try this to see if it'll work?

Thanks.
Fyi. Before I tried this and now after the system says I'm already up to date.
So why say it's up to date when it's not?

There was a way to dial up a number to have it check the server for an update, and you'll get it sometime in the next 72 hours... I don't remember what it was...

What software number are you on 4.06.605.3 ? If so download this ( http://android.clients.google.com/p..._WWE_4.08.605.2-4.06.605.3_release_222219.zip ) rename it update.zip and place it on your sdcard in no folders. Go to menu - settings - applications and uncheck fast boot. Power off the phone. Hold down the volume down button and power button untill a white screen pops up, wait a couple seconds and it should scan for some files and say update gift found or something like that it should then go to a black screen with a progress bar and install the update. If it does not find the file automaticly select recovery and then hit vol up and power a menu will pop up select install update.
Thanks. Did not work.
Had to do recovery then update from sd card. Then it said command not successful or something similar.
Yes it was renamed update.zip and put on sdcard/ no folder.

Dialing that checkin thing using the Dialer should pull the update to your phone sometime in the next 2-3 days, from what I've heard people say when they've done it. So maybe you'll get it sometime between now and tomorrow?
Well considering it doesn't work even though I put the update on my sd card, I doubt it will work. I don't know of course.

You could just ruu to the new ota but that would wipe all your settings and data. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357969)
Or call or take in to verizon and tell them it tried updating and failed and now it wont update. They should be able to update it for you. Your not rooted so they will give you no hassle.
Part of the bug in the first OTA GB was that the cache never got wiped. You'll have to do it manually to update.
If you're unrooted, pull your battery and boot into recovery by holding vol down while you press the power button > selecting recovery at the white screen. Then from there, wipe your CACHE partition... Don't wipe anything else!
Reboot the phone. Go to date and time, switch it to manual and set your date ahead by a week... You will get a prompt and you'll be able to actually install it this time.
I've already deleted cache. Nothing works.

Reboot now and install started. Then rebooted and said not enough free space to install this update. I've got tons of phone storage free space. Even the apps space has well over half available. This is utterly effing hopeless.

You deleted cache from recovery? Or from the settings menu? You have to do it from recovery so that it's actually formatted and empty

I was able to download the 178MB update. Then instructed to restart, which works just fine. At the 27% completion, the update says "failed" and then the device restarts.
The device was once modded but I reverted back to stock. It is not rooted. Although, I just realized the "Device status" still says modified.
Anyone else experiencing something similiar?

Factory Reset to make you status normal. You could also plug into kies and back uo and reinstall stock firmware

BTW, have you tried/attempted to install Google wallet or modify any of the contents in the device?
With latest update from T-mobile? Any specific steps needs to be taken?

I did. Just installed the app. Clicked the button in the app, did the ota update, went back into the app, clicked restore root, rebooted the phone et voila.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
DID the ota update? How did you do this since the system becomes modified and therefore will no longer check for a system update??????

Worked for me. I kept it from going modified between updates. Strangely enough it went modified the reboot prior to the ota.
I just went into supersu and had it forget all the root assignments then rebooted twice to clear the modified status back to normal.
OTA Rootkeeper saved supersu. Ota went without a hitch. Restored supersu with rootkeeper and the living is easy.
YMMV
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
It didn't work for me after updated with Kies, but Imanaged to regain root with CF auto root.
Ok. Tried myself. OTA successful, baseband upgraded and looks like root preserved. Device status after ota uptate shows modified.

Even though the update is quick I think you may need at least 50% battery etc, did you try Settings->About device->Software update plugged in?
Hello all I'm having a weird issue that I am Not sure if its normal or not. I am currently un rooted un modified haven't done anything to the phone since out of the box it is fully stock. I boot into recovery and it says no command then says error then the options popup. When I click the option to clear cache it just says error and reboots without accomplishing the task. Although when I hit factory reset it works. Is this normal behavior? This is my second s4 and I recall being able to do this with no problems on my other device. But I'm not sure why it's giving me error in stock recovery just from trying to wipe cache.. Anybody can confirm this being normal?

I never had any problem like that with stock recovery. Have you updated to the MDL firmware?
