Fyi. Before I tried this and now after the system says I'm already up to date.
So why say it's up to date when it's not?

There was a way to dial up a number to have it check the server for an update, and you'll get it sometime in the next 72 hours... I don't remember what it was...

What software number are you on 4.06.605.3 ? If so download this ( http://android.clients.google.com/p..._WWE_4.08.605.2-4.06.605.3_release_222219.zip ) rename it update.zip and place it on your sdcard in no folders. Go to menu - settings - applications and uncheck fast boot. Power off the phone. Hold down the volume down button and power button untill a white screen pops up, wait a couple seconds and it should scan for some files and say update gift found or something like that it should then go to a black screen with a progress bar and install the update. If it does not find the file automaticly select recovery and then hit vol up and power a menu will pop up select install update.
Thanks. Did not work.
Had to do recovery then update from sd card. Then it said command not successful or something similar.
Yes it was renamed update.zip and put on sdcard/ no folder.

Dialing that checkin thing using the Dialer should pull the update to your phone sometime in the next 2-3 days, from what I've heard people say when they've done it. So maybe you'll get it sometime between now and tomorrow?
Well considering it doesn't work even though I put the update on my sd card, I doubt it will work. I don't know of course.

You could just ruu to the new ota but that would wipe all your settings and data. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357969)
Or call or take in to verizon and tell them it tried updating and failed and now it wont update. They should be able to update it for you. Your not rooted so they will give you no hassle.
Part of the bug in the first OTA GB was that the cache never got wiped. You'll have to do it manually to update.
If you're unrooted, pull your battery and boot into recovery by holding vol down while you press the power button > selecting recovery at the white screen. Then from there, wipe your CACHE partition... Don't wipe anything else!
Reboot the phone. Go to date and time, switch it to manual and set your date ahead by a week... You will get a prompt and you'll be able to actually install it this time.
I've already deleted cache. Nothing works.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Reboot now and install started. Then rebooted and said not enough free space to install this update. I've got tons of phone storage free space. Even the apps space has well over half available. This is utterly effing hopeless.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
You deleted cache from recovery? Or from the settings menu? You have to do it from recovery so that it's actually formatted and empty

I Couldnt get into recovery to wipe anything, nor unroot the device. Reflashing a recovery or RUU through the bootloader didnt work either. Luckily I was able to get a new EVO from my local Sprint store today even though my device was rooted! Came with 2.3.3. so I was sad that I wouldnt be able to root. Then I come online, and BAM! 2.3.3 got root access today! #WINNING
And BTW, I was tethering and sending a text when the phone suddenly rebooted and wouldnt stop. Wasnt cause by the root or flashing anything.
So after the multi Window update, never have rooted, my device status reads modified, wtf!

boot into stock recovery / factory reset ( you will loose your data setup )
You don't need to do any boot into recovery stuff. I get this message every now and again (bone stock). Just reboot your phone and it's gone for a while.
Apparently Samsung is hyper-sensitive about their file system and if the root checker gets even slightly tripped, you get this message. Just do a simple reboot and it fixes it.
Did you disable any default apps ?
It happened with me too and was fixed by resetting to factory defaults which was annoying.
Also memory cards are suspected to change device status, check this thread.

I was able to download the 178MB update. Then instructed to restart, which works just fine. At the 27% completion, the update says "failed" and then the device restarts.
The device was once modded but I reverted back to stock. It is not rooted. Although, I just realized the "Device status" still says modified.
Anyone else experiencing something similiar?

After rooting the device, did you install a custom recovery? you can download goo manager in the play store and install TWRP recovery and reboot to it. If you already have the recovery installed and cant boot to the recovery then use adb to reboot it. Or another way is download terminal emulator and reboot using command lines from you for...only if you have root.
are you on stock or non stock recovery .. And to get into download mode . As far as i know from a off state hold down vol down and power button . to get into down load mode and its vol up to recovery ..
Not tried on my note but its how it goes on the note 10.1 tablet and other samsung devices i have had

Negative, only stuff I installed after the root was superSU and titanium backup.. both of the paid versions. .. When I power up holding vol+ Home Power instead of any upload option I just get the following
Reboot sys now
Apply update from ADB
Apply update from external storage
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Apply update from cache
Tried wipe data/factory reset to clear the root mod (multi-csc), but basically just wiped my phone of everything else except the root, lol, so at that point I figured I should ask for help..

that is the stock recovery. You need to get root again since u factory reset it. Once u get superSU go to play store and download goo manager to install TWRP or if you prefer CWR then install rom manager.

reboot again and hold vol up home and power until samsung appears then let go of power, but still hold home and vol up until recovery comes up. from there you can select to install zip ,which would be your rom. make sure to do a clean install (factory data wipe, wipe cache) Then use the instructions the op has up from where you downloaded the rom. should be good to go.

Yes. Flash a custom ROM. There are several that are very near stock (I recommend MaximusHD). Being on the stock ROM is what is prompting you to update via OTA.

I would love to try a custom rom but the htc One M8 I'm asking about is my dad's and he was reluctant to even let me do what I've done so far. I need a stock solution. Would doing the update and letting it fail keep the pop-up out of my hair for a while? Is there an activity I can freeze in some system app from Rom Toolbox or something?

No. It won't.
Tell your Dad not to worry.
Since you are still running the stock ROM, go to settings > about > more, and post what it says next to build number.
The build number for me wasn't exactly where you said but that's ok. On a side note it really sucks that you can't copy things like build number right from the settings.

Try use a root explorer to rename those two apks to .bak then reboot.
CheckinProvider.apk --> CheckinProvider.bak
updater.apk --> updater.bak
That's how I do it.
Sorry I wasn't specific, but what I meant by freeze was that I renamed them to .app. This didn't fix anything though.

Then the software updates tab is gone, right ?
Also try change this in build.prop
ro.config.htc.enableCOTA=1
to
ro.config.htc.enableCOTA=0
Other than this, no more idea.
I'm very confused. What update tab exactly are you referring to, and I don't even have that line in my build.prop according to Rom Toolbox.
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using XDA Free mobile app
I mean when you go to settings - about - you don't see software updates on top after you froze those apks.
I'm outside and replying you on mobile. Can't attach a screenshot.
Can you attach here your build.prop then I'll check it later when I'm home
(in next two hours)
I don't see anything about an update in About but I don't remember seeing one earlier either. Either way an update button is not what is annoying. The pop-up is my only concern. My dad won't update android manually and it would fail anyway but a phone that bullies it's user ever few minutes to update is unbearable. Is there an easy way to upload a file here from my phone without linking to a Google Drive file?
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using XDA Free mobile app
You don't see that because you already froze the apks.
I never attach anything from phone, only from PC. Just zip the build.prop and attach here, no need dropbox or gdrive.
