[R&D] UbnHD2 Pentesting distro for mobiles... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

http://thehackernews.com/2012/12/ubnhd2-ubuntu-based-pentesting-os-for.html
Does anyone want to start the port for this? It is a security distro of ubuntu natively running on the HD2. I just happen to come across this and thought it would be a great project for our device, and possible a dual-boot option for android/ubuntu. Just an idea. What do you guys think?
Here is the link to the xda project
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975081
and from the looks of it, it seems as if it is running on an iphone as well.......

This sounds pretty cool, but shouldn't this thread be in general?

depends on how you look at it...where as it is not a kernel or a rom, it is a discussion initiated in order to develop the above mentioned project for our phone, more of a precursor to what is to come. In that sense, it should be posted in the T989 development section.
ADD - it also qualifies for a [R&D] thread according to the forum section rules....just sayin'

Is no one willing to take a stab at this? I will if there are people interested? Keep in mind from what I read, this will eventually allow you to use your phone as it was intended (ie. phone calls, ims, sms, mms, gps, etc), its not just linux.

Dude i dont want to disappoint you but without recompiling the android kernel of the S2 with gcc it won't boot natively.
If the kernel is recompiled it will be not easy to manage the kernel objects & firmware with the the ubuntu system. Its only
working on the HTC HD2 because HTC had a different policy and many people from all over the world worked or are still
working on it
The easiest way to get it running on your samsungs is the chkroot method but you will need to modify some files..

It is, with modified kernel & drivers
The next Device ubnhd2 will run natively on is the HTC Desire HD...

I ran Ubuntu for a while on my S2.. and it was neet... but it's not better than just running android. plus those Desk top os are not touch friendly. .

That would be awesome if you could make it happen! Gnome 3 would probably work much better for a smartphone but that's a long shot I'm sure. Thanks again! :good:

Using a full Linux system on mobile phone is a good idea. But what is the point when android system is so good and mainly developed for phones. I don't discourage but these idea are not very useful for common uses. Unless Ubuntu Linux would give better UI and usability.

Dude you are right but with the dual boot option (existing on HTC HD2 & DHD) you can everytime switch when you u need the linux os (for example on work university or school) and the most nifty (in my eyes) option is that the Magldr can be configured to only boot up ubuntu when you press a key on the beginning of the boot process so something like a hidden OS on your phone You just start it out when you need it ^^And if ever a law enforcement guy gets it in his hand he wouldnt even know how to come in this os he would just simply see a android booting up

It's for mobile pentesting. Not meant to replace your linux desktop/laptop or your phone.

It would be cool to multiboot roms/Linux

Is it possible to boot something like Ubuntu?

Can't you just take any old version ubuntu arm edition build, put
an android kernel in and boot it? Drivers are built into the kernel right? Other than there being no way to receive calls and texts unless, it don't see why it wouldn't work. You could probably make programs that allow you to send and receive calls.

Google this topic. Also I think there is an app in the market that will help.

That app uses a chroot jail run inside android, I'm asking if you can boot a stand alone version of ubuntu. I've never succesfully got any linux distro installed that way.

The devs are working on it. They are under no obligation to develop for us and expect nothing in return. So either do something about it or shut up.
They're working hard for us so that the epic can live up to its name.
That'd Ubuntu inside a chroot jail, and it's so old it won't even update.

Our recovery is different, and doesn't have those fastboot options. I though only htc phones had those.

Yes i believe only HTC does that feature but.
IMHO, its not worth it because they don't properly shut off and start to lose battery life. My mother's EVO will say its been running for 118 Hrs but yet she only has the stock battery and it drains crazy even with Juice Defender. And when you shut it off it takes only 1 second and usually anywhere from 2 to 8 seconds to boot.
Ill take Cm7 and have my Boot-ani disabled so it boots fast enough.

You can kexec the boot.img, but odds of it booting are very, very slim.

We can do whatever fastboot can do with kexec...I believe your talking about htc's sense "fastboot" which has nothing to do with fastboot in the google android sdk...

[Q] Dual Booting

I've been thinking a lot about putting Linux on my E4GT, which I know can and has been done, but I don't want to have my phone running Linux only. I'd like to be able to dual boot AOKP and Ubuntu or whatever is available. I haven't heard much about dual booting the E4GT and I'm not sure it's even possible. Can someone help me out here? Thanks a lot guys.

good question op, i was just thinking of doing this myself... the complete linux install app makes it stupid easy, which was somewhat of a disappointment as i was expecting a project! not a bad thing though.. i would recommend going that route
So I've got Ubuntu 12 up and running and it's pretty good. I don't like how I have to connect through a VNC client because it makes the GUI harder to user, but I understand that its the easiest way.
Does anyone know if you can run a working Linux system in place of the Android OS? No dual boot, just Linux only.

How about just set up dual boot in general for when ubuntu phone os comes out for this device and say mozillas boot 2 gecko.... And android...

I have an idea for future android dev

why couldn't we just develop an android base rom and then add the files for each type of phone/device separately. kinda like having a flavor of linux and just adding the drivers for your machine to the one you like ...I don't know if its possible ...but it really would make things a lot easier IMO
cm10.zip+SGS3.zip(drivers+kernel)=sgs3Rom
cm10.zip+SGS2.zip(drivers+kernel)=sgs2Rom
AOKP.zip+SGS3.zip(drivers+kernel)=sgs3Rom
and so on......
Probably bc not every manufacturer is so generous with hard ware and kernel source it'd be difficult to have universal like Roms it was tried I believe I forget which device possibly the us s3 or I'm just flat out wrong still a great idea though

I got the idea today as i was trying out windows 8 (lasted about an hour btw) ....if we can put windows/linux/android/chromeos/osx86 on just about anything ....this really shouldn't be that hard ....at least with the devices that we already have all this for ...
If that was possible what's stopping people from building a custom phone like they do for computers
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
The problem is that with all the different manufacturers and different versions of Android. They also use different file systems and file paths. Also the addition of the different system partitions doesn't help this issue at all. As was said earlier, if windows 8 was ported, it may be possible.

Yeah google only lays the framework but doesn't seek to enforce a standard of implementation. Curiously allot of PC Linux strongly adheres to the industry and often source standards..... example x11

[Q] Clean install of Android OS for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 LTE

Background Info:
I have a wonderful Samsung Galaxy Note 2 that T-Mobile has corrupted. I deleted about 90% of the bloatware by rooting my phone. However, when I boot my phone I get a constant reminder that T-Mobile still won this fight: A nice long clip of their logo with an annoying startup sound. Also, recently I found out that they blocked my tethering and hotspot capabilities. I will not be defeated so easily.
Goal:
Reinstall the android OS for the Samsung Galaxy Note II LTE.
- Basically only want the OS and the drivers required for the phone to operate normally.
- It ill remove all non-samsung or android features.
Ensure that T-Mobile Won't get to add that crap (I've switched to another carrier and unlocked the phone).
Comments:
Firstly, I'd like to thank you for your time and help. Secondly, if you need more information to properly help me please ask. Also, If you know of a thread that already answers this, please post the link.
Goal = Question
LOL. ...T-mo still won the fight?
Sorry, I couldn't help myself. .lol
Anyway, I guess you are talking about "boot animation". That is embedded in the Rom, every carrier has its own animation.
However, you can change that :

Since it looks like you don't want to read and learn, I will direct you to the proper thread. Go to "Android Development" and head on to "Stickies".
You will see 2 threads, one by "teshxx" and the other one by "mrRobinson".
Now you can choose your poison.

[Q] Researching the use of my EVO for my Master's project, Help?

Hello all!
It has been a very long time since I have wandered into these parts of the forums.
I am finishing up my masters program in Information Systems this semester. My project that I am planning on implementing is a simple company database where <10 users can enter and update data simultaneously.
I am dabbling with using my EVO 4G as the server for which the back-end will be housed using the Servers Ultimate app.
My big question right now is, what ROM would be the most stable/light weight for the device to run so that it can prioritize being a server and nothing else? I was looking at the "stock barebones" Rom (found here). Is there a better solution? I am concerned about it running Gingerbread. Would a Honeycomb Rom prove better?
Any input is appreciated since time is running out on my semester.
Honeycomb is basically a non existent platform. It was designed to be a tablet os only and had so many flaws that it got cancelled. Only a tiny amount of devices ever ran it and the actual source code is unavailable. Now there are ics and jb roms but for this device gb will be the best. I would recommend using a cm7 rom as it is the most stable and requires less resources than a stock/bearbones rom.
