I have an idea for future android dev - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

why couldn't we just develop an android base rom and then add the files for each type of phone/device separately. kinda like having a flavor of linux and just adding the drivers for your machine to the one you like ...I don't know if its possible ...but it really would make things a lot easier IMO
cm10.zip+SGS3.zip(drivers+kernel)=sgs3Rom
cm10.zip+SGS2.zip(drivers+kernel)=sgs2Rom
AOKP.zip+SGS3.zip(drivers+kernel)=sgs3Rom
and so on......

Probably bc not every manufacturer is so generous with hard ware and kernel source it'd be difficult to have universal like Roms it was tried I believe I forget which device possibly the us s3 or I'm just flat out wrong still a great idea though

I got the idea today as i was trying out windows 8 (lasted about an hour btw) ....if we can put windows/linux/android/chromeos/osx86 on just about anything ....this really shouldn't be that hard ....at least with the devices that we already have all this for ...

If that was possible what's stopping people from building a custom phone like they do for computers

The problem is that with all the different manufacturers and different versions of Android. They also use different file systems and file paths. Also the addition of the different system partitions doesn't help this issue at all. As was said earlier, if windows 8 was ported, it may be possible.

Yeah google only lays the framework but doesn't seek to enforce a standard of implementation. Curiously allot of PC Linux strongly adheres to the industry and often source standards..... example x11

Above is the link to the 7100 ROM it looks amazing.... What does it take to make this flash-able onto our T Mobile devices... If it doesn't include a radio couldn't we just flash it? I am too scared to flash and try...its less scary to post a new thread ask you to try...haha. If a devo could shed some light or a brave soul could "test" it that would be great.

You can flash it. If you want to lose your radio. Unfortunately even if the 7100 rom does not include radio we have significant differences in our hardware that causes the radio not to work. Most likely something in the ril or kernel I believe (I could be wrong about the reasons). We dont have an AOSP kernel for the 7105 or tmo version.
Thank you sir... man, I really want that ROM. Was using XquiziT's ROM but the was having a couple problems with it and now the future for it looks bleak. (What I liked so much was the AOSP parts added in) Going to give Saurom a go now I guess.

I am TRUSTING you!!! Don't let me down.... LOL (Ref: "..but we will catch up..")
we need some devs solely working on what needs to be done for porting from one device to another. the fact that the ROM even functions on our device without modification should be a decent indicator of how close we are.
look in the US SGS3 section, 4 variants all with small differences and porting roms between those 4 is a piece of cake.
if someone could make a stand alone CWM.zip that we flash after a N7100 ROM that gave us back the radio it would be perfect. then we could just run any N7100 rom we wanted, no porting needed.

well as much as i love the note 2 if we don't get any aosp love soon ill probably swap devices with my wife. at least her sg3 has cm10/aokp. again not complaining, i just hope development picks up. i was thinking about getting a nexus 4 to tide me over but i hate lg. if anything i still hope the note 2 see's android 4.2.
I am curious. I have had CM/AOKP for years with my other phones. With this one seems a lot of the features I really love are here. What do you feel is missing from TW that AOKP/CM gives you. I am not a fan of TW colors but overall it is good (and I xan theme colors away). Only thing I really miss from AOKP is the wigets popup from nav bar.
Aosp is lighter and for me runs better.

Personally I really look forward to having a ROM with mass storage support. Since Google removed it from Android, I am no longer able to connect my phone to Linux for easy transfer of files and have to use all kinds of alternatives.
Not sure it can't be done on a TW based ROM, but CM/AOKP ROMs seem to more commonly introduce it like the one mentioned in this thread.

I second the motion for USB mass storage functions. Maybe wi-fi direct or other technology will supersede it, but it would be nice to have the capabilities meantime.

This I can understand I really wish google made ums/mass storage an option. I understand why they went with ums but options are always nice.
Reasons why I think they went UMS
1) ability to keep sdcard mounted while connected to computer
2) ability to mount /sdcard on /data/media making the internal sdcard the same as the internal data memory
3) most people people use windows
4) the option to turn it on/off may confise some people.
The only one I disagree with is number 4. Stupidd people will find a way to be stupid no matter how much you coddle them.

[R&D] UbnHD2 Pentesting distro for mobiles...

Does anyone want to start the port for this? It is a security distro of ubuntu natively running on the HD2. I just happen to come across this and thought it would be a great project for our device, and possible a dual-boot option for android/ubuntu. Just an idea. What do you guys think?

depends on how you look at it...where as it is not a kernel or a rom, it is a discussion initiated in order to develop the above mentioned project for our phone, more of a precursor to what is to come. In that sense, it should be posted in the T989 development section.
ADD - it also qualifies for a [R&D] thread according to the forum section rules....just sayin'

Dude i dont want to disappoint you but without recompiling the android kernel of the S2 with gcc it won't boot natively.
If the kernel is recompiled it will be not easy to manage the kernel objects & firmware with the the ubuntu system. Its only
working on the HTC HD2 because HTC had a different policy and many people from all over the world worked or are still
working on it
The easiest way to get it running on your samsungs is the chkroot method but you will need to modify some files..

Using a full Linux system on mobile phone is a good idea. But what is the point when android system is so good and mainly developed for phones. I don't discourage but these idea are not very useful for common uses. Unless Ubuntu Linux would give better UI and usability.

Dude you are right but with the dual boot option (existing on HTC HD2 & DHD) you can everytime switch when you u need the linux os (for example on work university or school) and the most nifty (in my eyes) option is that the Magldr can be configured to only boot up ubuntu when you press a key on the beginning of the boot process so something like a hidden OS on your phone You just start it out when you need it ^^And if ever a law enforcement guy gets it in his hand he wouldnt even know how to come in this os he would just simply see a android booting up

It will be a while before the hardware on this phone gets outgrown. That's one of the reasons I originally bought this phone instead of the S3 when it was released....because I knew THAT phone's hardware would eventually be outgrown by software updates. But I know as long as the Nexus 4 is able to handle software upgrades, we will too. And we all know the Nexus devices are first in line with the software upgrades.

I'm brand new to the whole development aspect of Android and have never really peaked at the code so please excuse my ignorance on the topic, but why is GSM to CDMA so hard?
I would think the OS would be built in a way that it utilizes drivers/modules to offload a lot of that dirty work. So it would be something like:
(quick pseudo code so don't get nitpicky.. just trying to get the idea across)
Code:
network = new NetworkDriver('LGOG_CDMA'); //swap out CDMA for GSM drivers, etc..
network.init();
network.sendPacket(your_data_stuff);
and then it would be a matter of then at least trying and hacking the drivers from 4.2, assuming system calls don't change drastically with every minor release wouldn't this work?

I can't speak on specifics, but we had a N4 Conversion Rom for 4.2.2 and it quickly became known to brick certain phones. It was discouraged to use it.

Kernel compatibility

Might be a bit of a noob question, but when it comes to kernels, do they have to specifically be built for the android version it's used with? I've noticed some kernels will indicate that they're 4.1/4.2 kernels, while others make no indication. Would it be poor judgement to flash an older kernel with a newer Android base, or should it be backwards compatible?
I've never tried flashing a kernel meant for a different Android version, but I imagine you risk soft bricking your phone by doing so.

I downloaded this from Sammy a few weeks back, and I was struck by how little is there. Yes, the full kernel sources are there - though of course a lot of stuff is still hidden in binary firmware blobs (presumably the TIMA/KNOX interface falls in this category). What struck me though was how little *platform* stuff is there. Is anyone else surprised by this? I would've thought they built more of their work on open-source foundations, but maybe not.

Well you have to remember, 4.3 Samsung is 4.3 samsung. If you ever looked inside the apks, there is a ton of stuff not used. Reason that's so, it's more generic across devices.
The only real changes are drivers/libs. A lot of those get pulled from the device when building anyway.
As far as I've ever seen, an individual cannot build a lib. You cannot reverse engineer them. Nothing.
If the specific libs needed to make things work are not available, then they just won't work yet. It's that plain an simple. I've helped out a lot in source building threads.
I wish it was easier, but sadly it's not.

Nothing.

Yeah, I've done a lot of work administering standard linux machines and it's a completely different world. They may be using an open-source core OS, but it's clear that none of the vendors treat their development itself as a process that contributes to free software.
By libs, do you mean the kernel modules and/or binary firmware blobs that are needed to support different bits of hardware? Or actual system libraries? I guess in this case, both are frequently closed. I heard a couple months back that the Android lead engineer at Google actually stepped down over the issue of OEM-supplied firmware blobs - specifically how un-transparent the process is, and how it's hard to even get access to the binaries for distribution, let alone the source D:
I have 4.4.2 source. Github. Linux building environment. Now I'm making a stock ROM to upload to XDA. Anyone with time to explain how to do so. All info accepted (-_-).
