[Q] Best time to charge battery? - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

Actually when is the best time to charge the phone battery?
1) Less than 50%?
2) Less than 25%?
3) First warning at 14%?
4) Second warning at 4%?
5) Last warning at 1%?
6) Completely finish it?

Actually there is no definite need for a "best time" to charge.
Lithium batteries are best kept in charged state. Draining it to 0% won't do you any good neither.
My policy charging is to charge when its above 30%.
Because it in an extremely slight way harms the lithium-ions when it goes down to 0%.
Which is why all battery calibrating guides discourages frequent calibrating.
Low battery does not damage the device or the battery but it does create more radiation than usual.
Which is bad for human organs. That's the down side to low battery.
Last but not least, it is better to keep your phone charged than emptied at all times. Right?

Best is to recharge it when it's more than half full, because it won't have to endure heat for too long.
Heat is the #1 enemy for Li-ion batteries.

Its not recommended though, your battery heats up extremely quickly if you charge while you play.(watching SD quality video is okay though, since the cpu isn't stressed to provide smoothness)
I do that once in awhile but once the temperature struck 40celcius I quit playing. (you'll notice, it gets hot real quick...)
You can download a battery status app to check its temperature.
Basically once its full its okay to unplug. Overcharging is extremely bad.

Temp+CPU pro. I'm using this. Its a widget app.
It shows you Cpu freq, Temp and free ram. Quite handy

I use CPU Tuner; it not only regulates CPUfreq (and able to do an emergency cap on MaxFreq if the battery is hotter than a certain temperature), but it also provides widgets that can -- among others -- display the current temperature of the battery.

Ive done the method from that thread and it worked the first time, second time and more didnt see any difference really unless you do that every charge but i guess that would just kill the battery

Would be nice if this would work, but I doubt it...
That doesnt do anything, i get good battery from not having any auto sync updates, brightness is low, widgets for 3g, gps wifi etc.. thats how i get up to 2 days normal usage on full load.
Didn't make any significant changes to mine. I guess if it ever really works then this would be a brain new, never charged battery.
I can only make like up to 24:00 (no use), usualy 7-10 hours of moderate use, can kill in an hour our two on gps.

I used this method when I got Desire and it worked very well! In a meanwhile my battery life weakened, probably because of new ROMs and kernels...so should I repeat this to extend battery life?

a) keeping it protected from extreme temperatures
b) frequent top-ups
I don't think the idea of keeping it plugged in after full charge is a good idea. The ff is from batteryuniversity.com:

Doesn't work for me I really need more battery life!
I learned a long time ago, even before my smart phone days, that battery life is something I'll never had.
Quick fixes will never work, but preparedness will. For instance; I have 3 charging cables. 1 at home, 1 at work and one in my car. I even had a spare battery for my previous phone.
Things like the first post, I'll never bother trying. It's silly. And looking at the poll results says it all.
I recently did it and I got 2 days out of my battery.
But I assume it will weaken over time and slowly have no effect.

What kernel is your ROM using?
Kernel's have a big impact on the life of your battery. I know mine doubled switching from kernels.
my phone has just recently started to give me the 15% warning then 2 minutes later switch off.
I used to get 10% and 5% before auto shut down.
I'm debranded orange on stock
2.2 2.29.405.5 (release keys)

Is this caused by software/rom based issues or is my battery on the way out?
(I did the fix in the OP and it did have a positive effect but that was months ago)

galaxy nexus battery questions.

everyday when I use the galaxy nexus my routine is.
before I sleep, I plug my phone to my phone charger and I pull it out after I wake up. so its basically charging for about 5-7 hours on average.
is this decreasing my battery life? because ever since I had the nexus, I did this and I have never had battery life compared to what people post on xda despite trying out roms/kernels.
so that was my first question.
my second question is, is flashing like getting a new device? after I flash, is the battery life suppose to be bad?
I constantly flash almost every other day and I'm not sure if this is the reason my battery life is so bad.
am I suppose to use my phone for couple weeks before I get good battery life?

Continuing to keep current going through the battery once fully charged does not improve the battery capacity. The analysis I made on several smartphones shows that some of them stop the current while fully charged ( for example HTC touch Cruise) but most of them keep a charging current.
Samsung smartphones are difficult to analyse because they do not give any data on the current going through the battery
2°) Battery calibration will not improve the battery capacity: Once the battery capacity has been reduced, this is due to chemical changes in the battery, there are no way to repair it. What we could expect is to remove the battery shutdown artefact by adjusting internal parameters of the battery control circuit, so that the state of charge calculus will be more accurate again.

but I think I may have written question number 2 in a bad way which was not what I intended. I did not mean to ask if battery calibration increased battery life.
most people already know that it does not.
what I am asking is if battery life is suppose to be calibrated(?) right after you flash a new rom or kernel.
I asked this because I flash a lot and don't get good battery life. I'm not sure if its my device that is the problem or the constant flashing that causes this.
I have currently stopped flashing for 2 days now so I will report back if that was the problem.

To answer question 2, you do not need to calibrate the battery and flashing roms does not consider your battery bad. The community here does have different opinions on calibration but it wasn't too long ago I read an article where google devs came out and told everyone this isn't really needed.
I have had a droid incredible and now the gnex, and have flashed numerous roms. I have never calibrated my battery and typically experience pretty good battery life AFTER I have played with the phone and set it up and stopped turning on the screen ever 2 minutes
To answer question #1:
The battery is a Lithium Ion battery. Lithium Ion batteries like to be charged. You should keep them above 10% as often as possible and ideally plugged when ever you can. These types of batteries last longer with a constant charge than with out, the full "Drains" kill Lithium Ion batteries faster and should only be done when you are calibrating the device (on the first charge or two).
The confusion comes from the old rechargeable Nickel Cadmium batteries which lasted longer if you did a full charge and discharge as these had a "memory".
As far as question #2 goes that is personal preference. I have flashed my GNex 6 or so times now and have had no issues when I didn't re-calibrate it.

Yes. Because of the way it the chemical reaction works it is better to keep it charged (plugged in at night).

Li-ion batteries decreases in capacity over time NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO. (even if you don't use it)This is the down side in exchange for easy maintenance and high energy density.
In short, just use it normal, charge it when it gets low and stop worrying about the battery life.

I am not so clever with my English so I have not fully understood your 2nd question.
Flashing a new rom involve only the smartphone. Calibrating the battery is changing data stored inside the battery IC's memory.
These are two ''independant'' processes. The only relationship between them is that the some roms allows you to write in the battery memory and some others doesn't

remember 10% is not 10% displayed charge. 0% is about 25% as manufacturers take into consideration battery technologies when designing them. it is also quite dangerous to charge from 0-20% on a Lion battery as the chemical reaction has to be reactivated. and over charging can cause a fire.
All calibrating does is make the battery indicator more accurate, it doesn't increase the charge, the supplied chargers and phone tech will not allow overcharging, and the phone will not discharge a battery to below 25% as battery discharge below 25% will damage the cells.
if you are interested look into Lion charging in the RC world. we need balancing boards with controllers when charging multiple cells, and we have to put them in fire bag just in case. it will give you a greater understanding of how lion and charging works.

Mine is pretty bad. I max out at 10 hours I'm trying Apex rom now hoping it will be better. Something tells me I need an extended battery.

Exactly right. And our nexus does not give us any access to the chip inside the battery, so there is no need to do any type of calibration with this phone. No roms can change this either due to the max17040 fuel gauge chip inside our batteries.

You got confused here. You are not calibrating the battery but how the OS interprets the battery data. The battery itself DOESN'T get calibrated. (And you cannot break a battery by flashing ROMs)
There's really nothing much you can do about the capacity of the battery itself as a normal user once it's been made in the factory.

Thanks for that! Didn't know it displayed it differently. I only know how the chemical reaction works and such.
NP fella, thing is Lion is new tech and people still see it by the standards of older battery tech so it's taken for granted that 0% is 0%, and 100% is 100%. where this wouldn't be possible as too many issues would crop up. in RC racing we basically learn it inside out, as Battery types are better for different things. Endurance racing needs Ni-Cad as i prefers a sustained drain and will slow the car near the end of the charge, but keep going with reduced acceleration, while Ni-MH batteries are good, as they have better acceleration due to there properties, but suffer from being fine and suddenly suffering poor acceleration, you have no warning like the last lap. While Li-on are brilliant for one and off acceleration like sprints, or twisty tracks, but run at max power right til the end then just stop dead.

I can't find any logical reason to explain how this method will work. I'm a chemist student, and I know the technology which used in our battery. as far as I know, charge our battery longer than its full time will decrease our battery life.
btw, it may sounds silly. after some years, we'll found that our battery power decreased. it will drain quicker than usual. if this happen, we may wrap our battery into a plastic bag then put it into freezer for 3-7 days.
I don't think bump charging is such a good idea. Bump charging kills your battery over time. I'll link an article later about it, soon as I find it.

charge more than necessary is a bad idea. if you have good phone, they have overcharge protection circuit that cut charge current. so charge over 100% only waste your time and electric bill. if you have bad phone, that make your battery overcharge, and that's very2 bad. bump charge maybe can fooling protection circuit, but that's make your battery overcharge.
here is my tips, it will double your battery capacities.
- charge your battery until 100%

- go to your local store, and buy new battery
- swap your battery and charge your new battery

Older phones were rather inelegant in their charging behavior; usually filling the battery to capacity and then switching to a trickle current to maintain the highest charge possible. This offered the highest usage time in the short-term, but was damaging the battery over the course of ownership. As explained at Battery University, “The time at which the battery stays at [maximum charge] should be as short as possible. Prolonged high voltage promotes corrosion, especially at elevated temperatures.”[1]
This is why many new phones will “lose” up to 10% within a few minutes of coming off the charger. The reality is that the battery was only at 100% capacity for a brief moment, after which the battery management system allowed it to slowly dip down to around 90%. Leaving the phone plugged in overnight does not make a difference: the phone only uses the wall current to maintain a partial charge state.

Bump It. Or Should You?
One technique that has gained popularity in the user community is "bump charging." To bump charge a device, turn it off completely, and plug it into a charger. Wait until the indicator light shows a full charge (on the ADR6300, for example, the charging LED changes from amber to green) but do not yet turn the device back on. Instead, disconnect and immediately reconnect the power cord. The device will now accept more charge before saying it is full. This disconnect/reconnect process can be repeated multiple times, each time squeezing just a little bit more into the battery. Does it work?

The answer, of course, is that bump charging definitely works.
So what does it all mean?
If you absolutely need the highest capacity on a device like this, you will need to bump charge. There are currently people experimenting with "fixes" for this, but I have yet to see one that works. Be warned, however, that repeated bump charging will wear your battery faster and begin to reduce its capacity. If you are a "power user" who will buy a new battery a few months from now anyway, this presumably isn't a concern. If you are an average consumer who uses a device for a few years, I would recommend that you stay away from bump charging. The bottom line is that you don't really "need" to do it unless you are actually depleting your battery to 0% on a regular basis.
If you are someone who can top off your phone on a regular basis, do it. Plug it in when you're at home. Plug it in when you're at your desk. As explained by Battery University, "Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory."[2]
Beyond that, the best advice I can offer is to stop paying such close attention to your battery gauge and to just use your phone. Charge it whenever you can, and then stop obsessing over the exact numbers. If you really need more usage time, buy an extended-capacity battery and use it normally.

[Q] Battery self charging!?

Hey, has anyone noticed their battery meter saying a low percentage and then seeing it increase after not touching the phone for a while? ive noticed my phone will say 2% for example and ill let it sit for a while and when i check it again its all the way up to 10%. I have calibrated the battery but it doesn't affect it and it still happens?
lol yea my battey is solar powered.. lol jkjk.. but naw its because when your screen is on it adjusts tye percentage based off how your using it.. if its asleep for a while tye battery percentage will increase because its not being used make sense?

Nope, it actually doesn't make sense.
You're gas gauge in your car doesn't go up when your car isn't being used. Percentages shouldn't increase without charging no matter what.
FWIW, I've experienced this a few times. My battery has increased as much as 5% without being charged and that's in one string. For example, my battery may go down to 50%, then over the next 20 minutes go to 55%, then an hour later 42% and rise up to 45% and so on. Not sharp spikes either, steady gradual increases.

No, it does not work like that.
Battery app re-calculates the remaining battery based on the battery power currently being used (mV) and history. That's why we are doing the calibration to correctly measure the current battery status and range of it.
In most case, battery power (mV), it goes down from the top and it usually up & down within a small range but for overall, it goes down.
But sometimes, the current mV is goes up and it's caused by
1. Battery usage forecast was wrong or
2. Battery is recovering its power again - for example, after CPU intensive task, the voltage could goes up
3. the remaining percentage goes up if the battery usage is slower than the expectation (it's not going up because it's not being used. Even the screen is off, the battery is still being used). In this case battery app recalculate the percentage based on the current mV and trend that how fast battery mV is decreasing. If mV is increasing, then battery app will show like it's being charged...
There are couple of more things that we also consider in here but I think this is enough information to know.
Update: Let me add a couple of more.
From OP's screenshot, it shows that there's big drop in battery percentage. Usually, big drop happens (battery power is decreasing so fast), it's really hard to calculate the exact remaining percentage because battery shows some irregular pattern after that kind of fast drop. So, some point of time, battery app recalculate the percentage based on current voltage. That's why it's showing going up.
One more case is, the pattern change. After big drop and/or voltage is about the same (stay almost same), then battery app also adjust the remaining battery level indicator.
Simple example) Just like Human. I just finished eating and fully charged. After a meal, I worked so hard and almost exhausted. No power left. But after a little break, I could recover my power a little more.
This example is not exactly same but it would be more easier to understand.
I have noticed this. Could it be that after the battery runs out the phone puts itself in a low consumption mode, thus the battery cools down, increasing the efficiency of delivering power, thus increasing the apparent voltage available? This would be similar to putting the battery in the fridge to get a litte bit of extra juice...

Its just the phone reading the voltage wrong, the calibration is outta wack.

Makes complete sense. There is no accurate way to judge the potential energy stored within a battery. Changes in temperature are one of many things that effect the chemical availability of energy.
Little shifts in measured overall capacity and current charge change all the time on every device you own. Most of them do not update to reflect this, some dont update in the wrongest way. My ASUS gaming laptop doesnt report new full charge capacities to windows and now more than ever with the battery being half shot i can hit 150% but it always did this from new sometimes would show it had stopped charging at 98% when it reached full capacity or 101%.
I can explain the software aspects of the problem. But you will need an electrical engineer, chemical analyst to help you go over the batteries end of it. I of course am not familiar with Android in particular but Portable PC's Sony's PSP etc seen it everywhere.
Its due to a flaw in Samsung phones where it does not correctly read the battery. Sometimes a phone reboot will show as much as a 70% (from my experience) in battery but then my battery will start to "charge" itself as the phone reads the voltage better. I've seen this happen on our phones and the captivate

you have no idea how mechanical measuring works, do you? here is an example of how gas is measured; a floating ball attached to an arm changes the voltage of the signal depending on the amount of fuel in the tank. Higher the ball, higher the voltage, and thus higher the gas gauge.
Consequently, you will notice fuel gauges reading higher going uphill and lower when going down, because gas doesnt just sit in one place. The gauge is usually calibrated for when the car is standing still.
Now that you have an idea how mechanical measurement works, can you apply this to battery chemistry? NO, because they are completely different!
Battery life is measured using a formula, not a mechanical device. It is, in essence, a best guess. Some formulas are better than others, but they are all still estimates. And you will notice fluctuations.

i had the same thing happened to me, and i have the pic somewhere.. where the battery just dropped from like 80% to 30% in less then 5 min.. i was using it, and had the screen off, and had it on again.. and it went down like crazy.. and afterwards.. it started to go up, as if i was charging the phone..
some one said that, its a bug by samsung, where if you charge your phone not quiet to 100% and use the phone, this can happen..
concerning what some other guy said about turning the phone off and on, can boost batery power.. that was hilarious sad..

However very much expected. You have created a circumstance where accuracy was guaranteed to be off. Making sure that multiple corrections were a reality.
I would hope that in a 2 day period you had 3 to 4 hours to sleep where this phone could have reached 100% twice and only been on the charger about 4 times. Obviously a couple very busy days for you. I could guess any number of occupations that might have done this to you

Now that you've got that out of your system, let me explain it a little more simply so you understand.
It was an analogy. I never said that battery percentage was calculated the same way as fuel capacity. But it's an analogy to help you relate.
Batter percentage is a measure of volume of power left in the battery. It should never fluctuate UP without being charged, unless something is wrong with the battery/phone. 55% is 55%, no matter what temperature, usage time, current usage is. If the battery is 1800 mah, then 50% battery level means there's 900 mah left. It's not a calculation of anything else. Just like if your fuel tank hold 16gal, and the needle is at 1/2 (stationary of course, not parked/driving up or downhill as you needlessly pointed out), you have 8 gal left. There's no mathematical calculation needed there.
Just for reference, I own no other electronic device that magically increases in battery percentage. My laptop goes down unless it's being charged. It's a quirk/flaw with the system in the phone. Plain and simple.
BTW, no apology needed. I'm just happy to educate you!

My gas guage goes up when i park uphill.

Battery Life Optimization Guide

Rule 1: If you haven't taken these steps, you haven't done a thing in the way of actually optimizing your battery life, and please do not complain that your battery is bad if you haven't at least done steps 1 and 2!
Step 1: Use BetterBatteryStats: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
This will diagnose battery drain issues. If you have apps that are sucking battery in the background, this will show it. Google the ones that have high partial wakelock, and usually you will get a diagnosis. It is also sometimes very easy to figure out what is sucking battery just by looking at the application that is holding wakelocks or having many alarm wakeups.
Step 2: Sync settings, make sure that all of them are either at push or as high as you're personally willing to allow between sync checkups. Any sync settings that happen too often will trash battery life.
Step 3: Radio based drain is a very big part of battery life! As such, if you do not need constant sync, you can turn off mobile data on your own when you do not need it, or go to the Mobile Network settings and disable always on mobile data. This can greatly increase battery life, but at the expense of sync not working when mobile data is off.
Step 4: Display brightness can greatly affect the power drain of the battery! You can either manually control the brightness, download Lux autobrightness to make your own autobrightness settings, or flash a custom autobrightness setting in the ROM in order to achieve this. It also can have the side effect of making the display of the right brightness when in the sun and in the dark, so it is always at ideal brightness to preserve battery.
Step 5: Make sure that the battery is calibrated. This is not very complicated. Download currentwidget from the market, put it on a homescreen. Charge the device until currentwidget indicates 0 mA charge. Use the phone until the phone shuts off. You might want to then go to hboot and drain the battery until it shuts off again, and then do a full charge again. Only do this once every 2-3 months, because this is bad for the battery.
Step 6: Adblocking! One big cause of battery drain and unnecessary network usage is downloading ads. If rooted, use Adaway and Adblock to block ads from ever being downloaded, and use Adaway's adware feature to detect and remove apps with adware!
Step 7: A radical step is to use Core Control or something similar to either underclock, undervolt, or just shut off cores. Undervolting is always highly suggested, as it will help reduce heat and give the phone a longer lifetime, but underclocking and shutting off cores will reduce performance!
Step 8: Custom ROMs and kernel experimentation might yield just a bit more in the way of battery life, and also give much more customization and features.
After this, you have likely topped out all that can be reasonably done to extend battery life. If you find that your battery drain is still poor, perhaps you have a defective battery, or maybe even a defective device (Highly unlikely, but who knows...). It is also possible that you simply have a use case that is much more than the phone can accomplish, in which case you can either use a battery case, or an external battery to charge the phone on the go.

Weird, I've tried this many times, and can't get the indicator show exactly 0 mA...
the lowest for me around 3-5 mA... :|

if too much undervolting the phone freezes/ reboot ....so the best value for undervolting is between 50 and 100mv ....in some cases undervolting increases battery life and makes the phone cooler but not much ...
Under volting is when you tell the battery to provide a little less power than usual.
Which is why the battery life usually increases, as less battery is being used than previously.
But as stated, too much can cause the battery to not provide ENOUGH power, therefor crashes and cannot boot properly etc.

Pretty much, I would say. Drastic increase of battery in games: phone won't get hot => battery will last longer without overheating and, what is much more important, it will stay healthier in long run.
Even on wall charger while playing, my HOX won't overheat with - 100mv UV.
This is the main feature I miss on JB Sense without custom kernels

Same here. On both my old HTC Sensation, and my HOX. Never saw the mA reach 0. Even after leaving on the charger for a couple of days.

The problem is, the phone cannot get the same amount of energy, it consume (in fact, it is the millisecond, where the phone is fully charged, than it discharges for some minutes, than it will be charged again for three minutes and so on periodically). So, what I mean, you will almost never see 0 ma on one X or other modern phones. You can only see that, if device can disable battery while it is fully charge and use wall charger like a main supply. And the last device with such behavior was Huawei s7 back to 2010
So, 3-5ma is pretty ok.
