Hi all. I747m locked to Virgin Mobiles network. Does anyone know if I could run on Tbaytel's 800mhz CDMA without a SIM unlock? Visiting family for xmas in rural Canada and would really love to at least have talk+text enabled. Thanks for the help!

Your i747m doesn't have a CDMA radio, so to directly answer your first question, no.
Poking around a bit, though, suggests that TBayTel is also running a HSPA+ network, and that they are also directly selling the i747m themselves - so the i747m is obviously compatible with at least their HSPA+ network.
I do not think you will be able to do so, however, without unlocking the phone. You might try here if you want to go through with that (the instructions are confirmed to work with the i747m so long as your device is running the stock Jelly Bean ROM - rooted or other wise - or, presumably, another ROM derived from those.)

Ahh too bad! I have a tbaytel SIM as well however I left it on the east coast. Unlocking for 4 days use isnt really necessary IMO. Thanks for the reply!
Thanks again smel! Wasnt sleepy yet so I went ahead and used the hidden menu unlock from the post you linked. Tested with my sisters Tbaytel SIM and worked like a charm. Merry whateveryoucallit-mas and congrats on surviving the apocalypse!

Hi,
I've been looking through the stickies and searching and I can't seem to find the information I need.
I bought my gf her GN from Bell and she's using it on Wind. I'm wondering, what model does she have? She has 4.0.1, build ITL41F, but is it yakju or yakjuux?
So I'm thinking I might as well root her phone in order to install the updates. What is the simplest way to obtain root?
she's prolly yakjuux or something like that. doesnt really matter since the phone is GSM, a yakju image will work just fine.

Zepius provided a link for rooting, I also found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392380 helpful to consider your kernel, ROM and radio. I'm on the Bell Mobility network, and find my setup to work great: Apex version 1.1.2 with Franco Kernel Milestone 4 and using Baseband UGLC1. I recommend reading a lot through the Galaxy Nexus Development threads before doing anything.
I am curious though ... You were able to use the Bell-purchased GSM GN on the Wind network? Wind uses AWS spectrum for its network vs Bell's HSPA+ ... and I know that the Nexus S was not interchangeable between networks. If the GN is interchangeable, then that will be great news for me when my Bell contract is up at the end of the year. I'd love to switch.
Doesn't matter what it's currently on, as long as it's GSM (it is) then you can flash it to yakju and you'll get the updates OTA right when they come out.
You don't need to root to flash, you just have to unlock the bootloader and flash the stock images. It will 100% wipe your device. You will not be rooted when you're done. If I had to offer a piece of advice, it's to leave your girlfriend's phone on stock yakju. You'll thank me later.

the galaxy nexus is pentaband so it will work on any GSM carrier.

The Galaxy Nexus is Pentaband and therefore supports AWS. Hence all the people using it on T-Mobile USA...

Why would I not root it? I thought I should, as I planned on rooting it for her at some point, so I just wouldn't have to wipe it again.
Thank you all for your help.
basically you'll become her tech support. if something breaks, its your fault and you have to fix it.

Yes it works fine. I bought it for her at Christmas. No store, despite having no contract prices, would sell it to me without a contract. Since I'm a customer of Bell, I went to them and told them I was upgrading.
Wind is cheap and ok. I've heard with AWS, the signal tends to wrap around buildings rather than penetrate them. We were in the ACC and I put on wifi hotspot because she had 0 reception. Download speeds vary from disgustingly slow to decent. And she lives in TO.

Root is not required to flash the stock images, so why do more than you need to?
If all you want to give her is the latest OS and timely OTA updates from now on, just unlock the bootloader and flash the stock yakju Google firmware.
I would not root someone else's phone. If she doesn't see the benefit of root for herself and strive to do it on her own, don't root her phone. Root and mess with your own phone. Leave hers be. Believe me, you don't wanna deal with that.
I have an unlocked T-Mobile S3 and I am ready activate it on Straight Talk which I believe uses ATTs network. My question is concerning custom roms; can anyone confirm that using roms specifically for the T-Mobile version will or will not cause issues if i use a different carrier?
Thanks

I was a bit confused because there are several threads/devs trying to make sure users know to flash the right rom for their phone version. I also know that the ATT & T-Mobile versions are identical, besides the ATT version supporting ATT's LTE frequency and TM's supporting their HSPA+ frequency, and since I bought this phone off contract w/o warranty I want to make sure don't end up with a $600 paperweight.
Thanks for your confirmation!
Wait... Just some that we're on the same page, I read that as if you took a T-Mo phone, with a custom ROM, unlocked it, and used the phone on another GSM carrier, would there be problems - the answer is no.
If you take a T-Mo phone and use another carrier's ROM that's not compatible with T-Mo's phone - yes you will have problems.
Hello All,
Quick question: I have an unlocked rogers version that I use on fido. I received the latest software patch, still on ICS. Does it come from fido or lg?
Also, when JB comes out will I get it while on fido network?
Rogers owns fido and uses the same network. This phone is offered on rogers and not on fido. That's why I'm suprised I got the update and I'm hoping I get JB. Just don't know who sends it.
I asked this question in the Canadian Update Thread but got no responses. Please excuse me for the double post.
Finally, the phone is unlocked through Rogers, according to the guy I bought the phone from. I think this may be true since after the update the phone still works with Fido. If this is the case, will I be able to root my phone, install custom ROMS and continue using the phone on any network with needing to unlock the phone again?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm a total newb and coming from IOS, completely new to android. JB IOS was second nature, I just have to relearn everything for Android.
Thank You
Doubt the phone is unlocked. Most Rogers phones work with Fido without unlocking. Best way to check if it is unlocked is to use a non Fido sim.

I see. Don't know anyone that's on another carrier other than Rogers or Fido.
Is there another way to tell?
thanks
Your phone receiving updates from rogers
Your phone always will be unlocked if it was once
Are talking about the fido board network, which is dead for 15 years or there an another Fido exists?

thank you. I was hoping it was LG who sends the updates. Since it's Rogers and I'm on Fido, they don't support the phone I have, my only choice will be to root the phone.
I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean about the Fido boards
Cause of provider specific soft/settings/specs, not many chances the update policy will ever change.
About the fido - there was a board network every old style geeks know about - the FIDO. Well, in one word - thats a legend, like floppy disc, spectrums and other things.

JB update for G
Hey Guys. i have see a video in youtube for Optimus G JB update already leaked ofcos for korean first. Does any one have any idea when is official release?

Fido is the cheaper partner of Rogers. They use the same cell towers and networks, but have separate accounts and plans.
Similar to how Koodo is the cheaper partner of Tells, and Virgin is the cheaper partner for Bell.
(I miss the old FIDOnet boards. So much nicer than web forums or mailing lists.)

so i just got my SM-900W8 for Wind mobile today, had to buy it with two months service, but then was able to send half of the money i put down on that service over to my old account, switch the sims, and now i have my same old number and plan on my new note, and i'm only out an extra 20 bucks (still bull****, i know, but i wanted it today and wasn't going to deal with waiting, for any reason.... maybe too impatient lol)
anyways, after i bought it, i stopped by the bell store and asked what model they sell... they showed me the box and it was the exact same model number... SM-900W8. i then went to rogers, same thing, and telus i presume will be the same since bell and telus share towers etc
so, my question is, if i unlocked my phone, could i simply go get a bell rogers or telus sim card, and throw it in, and have it work? the region issue is a non-starter for two reasons - first i didn't even have that region lock sticker on my box, but second, the robelus sims would all be the same region, so it shouldn't matter in the least. what i'm wondering is, would the bands be the same, or at least some of the same to the point of working? i know that wind uses AWS bands and robelus does not, but since they are the same model number, is it possible that they have radios that are compatible with all four carriers in this phone?
if not, can someone explain to me how to find out what networks this phone would work on? i mean, it sounds like people are unlocking their tmobile phone and using it on att, and from what i remembered, att is not aws, and i thought that rogers and att phones worked together... ARGG what gives here?
also, are the tmo phones the same model number as mine? or did they use different phones than wind this time around?
finally, if i'm looking to root this or put a rom on this, am i looking for the tmo roms and other stuff like i was with my sgs3 or am i looking for something else with this new phone? where can i find this info... i haven't been able to find much about this yet, i guess not many people have this phone on wind yet

Thanks for the answer, but I don't know for sure what bands the big three use, can anyone tell me if this phone will work on those big networks?
Also, any answers to my other questions ?
Rogers, Bell and Wind all use the SM-900W8 variant probably with just a different modem / QCP file.
So does this mean that there is some chance of, in the future when things get cracked, of flashing a new modem etc onto it our something

to answer my own question, yes, i unlocked my n900w8 from wind with an unlock code, and i was able to see whatever networks were attached to the sim i put in it. rogers, bell, telus, koodo, virgin, fido, wind, probabaly chatr if you really wanted to use this device on that dumb ass carrier
so yes, you dont even need to flash other modems... it just works
i did try flashing bell/rogers/puerto rico roms on my device and all had the same result, it all worked, and it all worked fine
Samsung galaxy note 3 SM-N900W8 from videotron (canada)
Hi, i have a Samsung galaxy note 3 SM-N900W8 from videotron (canada) and i unlock with a code to use it with fido and the phone show only the 3G internet, is there a way to enable the LTE? when i go to setting mobile network, network mode show me only 3 options WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) or WCDMA only or GSM only. I tried to root the device to do like this forum said ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2489766 ) and when i root it it says pass but it stuck on rebooting and something red is written on the next line and samsung logo is there too. anyone can help me to enable the LTE network?
I have an AT&T M8 which I unlocked, rooted and s-off'd while under AT&T contract. I then decided to switch to T-Mobile and give this device to my 11-year old son. What I'd like to know/understand is whether I can flash some of the T-Mobile Roms I see in this forum on the AT&T M8 and it work with T-Mobile network? Or do I still need to flash the AT&T Roms?
Thanks in advance for any help advice!
Johnny
SIM unlocked would allow you to use it on stock AT&T too if you choose to. Also everything seems to be interchangeable unless noted. I would go for Rom with T-Mobile's Wi-Fi calling, which is amazing btw for those who get sorry service.

You should be able to flash either T-mobile or AT&T (Even roms in the international section, I would recommend InsertCoin) roms without any issues. Eleven and has a M8? Damn, i'm jealous lol.

Thanks for the information to the both ^^^^^^^^ of you! I appreciate it. Yes , he is 11 years old, but a good respectful kid and does well in school. With that I'm okay with giving him nice things. If that should change, then Daddy gets the M8 back!!! LOL
Somewhat related question... If I u were to use an AT&T model on T-Mobile, would everything work correctly, 3g/4g? Comparing the frequency bands online, the AT&T model is missing the 1700 band that the T-Mobile version has. Does that mean the phone doesn't have the hardware components to connect to it? Or is it capable of connecting, just that AT&T doesn't use that band? I'm asking because I want to pickup a used m8, but the T-Mobile version is going for around $100 more than all the other carrier's versions... Could I just SIM unlock an AT&T version and be set, or will some things not work?

That's a good question and hoping someone will have the answer. In the meantime I was able to SIM unlock my son's ATT M8 and install a TMobile SIM using stock ATT rom. So far everything has worked and the 4G symbol does appear in the task bar, although I'm not sure if that really means he's getting 4G. I did have to manually enter the APN settings so he could get mobile data when not connected to wifi.
Tmobile apn settings
Would you mind posting the apn settings that allowed your sons phone to work on 4g and send mms? Its the main reason I'm looking into flashing a Rom and would save me a lot of trouble as I have spent quite a bit of time searching for one that works on my phone and none seem to do the trick.
