VM grandfathered as donor # to HTC One V? - HTC One V

Is it not possible to use a phone on VM $25 grandfathered as a donor phone, donor as in using its meid#, and program a HTC V with that number so that you can use a newer phone on a grandfather plan? I know the phone would be limited to 3G, since the donor is a 3g phone.
I've searched and found information regarding putting the phone in DEV mode and changing the MEID with workshop... but I did not find any guides. Any thoughts anyone?

It can be done, but we cannot discuss it here for legal issues. But as I have already investigated and cannot pull aaa and ha keys from the hov, I'm gonna say it would be a bad idea to flash it anyway as there is no real way to get back to stock. Your AAA key is the unique key that is your password for data, and you don't wanna lose those.

Could you go to someone in the mall and have them "unlock" the phone for you that way?

Well by unlock I assume you mean boot loader unlock, which we already have. As far as carrier unlock, I'm pretty sure we need s off to access nv items that are still locked.

Thank you for the response - After doing the HOV - > PP - I understand some of the issues. Hopefully that one post regarding an S-OFF phone returned from (manf. replacement) will show some results.

I went to Chinatown to ask around for people to port the information from my Optimus V to my new HTC One V. They don't touch that subject with a ten foot stick.
I still get lots of use out of the HTC One V though, it's a great product.

It'll never happen. All you can do is do a nand backup using RA 1.8.0 to backup your wimax partition. The way keys are signed/encoded is a one-shot deal. Done at the factory. Though at the depot level they (HTC) reflash the phones with new everything during the remanufacture process.
I think I deleted my Android back up anyone have one I can use??

It doesn't work that way unfortunately - you can't use someone else's nandroid backup because the RSA keys in their wimax.img are different than yours. They are specific and unique to each and every Evo. I sold my Evo because my WiMax RSA keys got hoses and purchased a brand new one. I'd suggest doing that if you don't have a nandroid backup that was made through Amon RA recovery.
Ok so Sprint said that to get it to work again they have to flash it will that brake the root?

Sprint cannot AFAIK replace your 4G keys. That has to be done by HTC, and HTC only since they are the holders of the master Verisign key(s). Also any reflashing by HTC, or Sprint will remove root.
Oh well that's what she told me lol

Does any one know of you can add issurance after 3 months? Or can I get it replaced free under warranty?

Not a very honest thing to do... Please, this is not an attack on you, furrelkt. It's a message to everyone. It just seems more and more people are doing this. Everyone knows when you get into rooting/modding you are taking a risk. If you trusted some random person on the internet that you do not know and flash a radio and break your RSA keys, that is your fault. Giving Sprint the liability for your actions gives liability to all of Sprint's stakeholders. That includes everyone on these boards. We, as a community, need to start instiling a sense of pride and ethics into ourselves. Without it, we just corrupt eachother and take away from what this community is all about.
Sprint will simply backup and flash your phone and run it for tests. They will then look at your MAC and see that you have corrupted your Wimax files.
At this point if you have insurance, you will pay $100 as a warranty return.
Or with no insurance, they will offer you to buy a new phone. But remember that you still have a very functional phone just no 4G. Really 4G is patchy and uses the resources of your phone poorly. I use it but mostly don't.
Download CM6 for Evo, flash your favorite kernel and enjoy the experience.

I agree and disagree at the same time.
I will agree that if you start flashing files of unknown origin to your phone without really knowing what you are doing then you deserve what you get.
At the same time though -- this particular instance is a 100% software issue that can be resolved in 5 minutes once an EVO is back at the factory. True cost to HTC or Sprint is next to nothing outside of some frieght and paying some kid 10 dollars an hour to run EVO's thru an automated restore process.
I hosed my 4G RSA keys, but have not gone to the sprint store to try and swap because my EVO is pristine and just like the day it came out of the package. I take care of it dearly. I have the fear that if I were to get a refurb and back to square one, whatever unit I get would smell like ass, be scratched or dinged up, and some other kid would get my flawless phone after it's reflash.
I was never a heavy user of 4G anyways, it's in DFW, TX however I live about a mile outside of the nearest bubble of 4G.
Either way -- yes it's sneaky, but it's not as costly or "evil" as one might think if you are returning a phone that is physically 100% good.
Trying to get a new/free phone because of physical neglect though? that's cause for an ass whoopin'

Anybody willing to give up their Wimax RSA keys

I've had my evo since launch, and have tried the various root methods. Of course, being on the bleeding edge, I managed to erase my wimax keys...would anybody who doesn't use their 4g be willing to give up their keys? I realize this is a shot in the dark, but I just moved to an area with awesome 4g coverage and I'm pissed to discover that I wiped the keys out. Contact me via PM if interested, and we can discuss details.
did the same thing to my first evo. sorry to hear, man. how would you restore the key back into the phone anyhow?
I thought the keys were specific to the phone? Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the only way to restore was with a backup from your own device. You don't have a nandroid backup that includes wimax?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
well if i was you, and i had insurance, i would unroot my phone. Mess up the charger port intentionally (extremely easy to do considering im on my 3rd evo from this problem) and take it back, they'll replace it for free and you'll have a brand new refurb to go crazy on lol ...its kinda sneaky but it would probably work..i know i've managed to damage two charger ports before my current evo from just everyday use and have gotten refurbs for free, no questions asked.

Very correct. The RSA keys are tied to the specific phone. Not transferable.

In what way are they tied to the device? By the way, I come in peace I'm not questioning your knowledge, I'm actually curious since I'm getting my Evo replaced and have an extra set of RSA keys. I thought I'd just give the other one away since the old Evo was damaged beyond repair. Is it tied to the MAC address? Thank you.

You can't just give away your RSA keys. I guess technically you could, but if the other phone uses your old wimax partition, it won't work. The key checker app may show that they're present, but that doesn't mean that they're functional.
I'm not sure exactly how they're tied to the phone, they may be tied through the MAC address. But I do know that the only (proven) way to get them back is to have a backup from the same device. After all of the warnings about backing up wimax I really don't see how anyone loses their RSA keys anymore.

Now that you mention it, I've got some old P2 processors with 3D Now...lol just kidding. Thanks for the info dude, that makes perfect sense how it won't be easy to just port it over. I just thought of it because I've read on a few forums from people requesting RSA keys that aren't being used and I thought I can just give it away.
Wow, i'm honestly surprised to still see my thread show up at the top of the list. I figured this would end up buried shortly after posting it.
Here's my story:
I bought my evo the day it was released, played with it for a while, then started looking at rooting after it became available. It's been too long to remeber what exactly I did at the beginning, but things change so fast around here that I think you'll understand. Somewhere in the process of F**king with radio updates, PRI updates, flashing and reflashing and so on and so forth, I managed to overwrite my wimax partition and set myself up with the dreaded wimax MAC of DOOM! Well, since I didn't have 4g in my area, I figured "who cares" and left it go. Then i decided to clean out my computer and deleted most of the "unneeded" nandroid backups since they were old and outdated and I didn't think I needed them. Oops. Now I live in a 4g service area and have discovered that pretty much destroyed any chance of getting 4g working again.
Sooooooooo....I unrooted my phone, took it to the store and told them my 4g was broken. They sent me a refurb and everything's working great now. I would like to thank the community for being supportive and for making everything here possible, but a word of warning to n00bs...read the instructions, read them again, read them once more, and then read them again. And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS keep your backups.
I don't feel bad about essentially lying and telling them it's the manufacturer's fault. My first evo had dark spots on the screen, and I had to exchange it and never got my $100 rebate. So everything works out in the end.

Rofles... Hope you have several hundred years to crack that... Yeah RSA is the keeper of the keys. Even hTc doesn't have the master key just the console to create them for phones that are in production. Those are very old threads you had to be looking at. Probably about a year ago when the Aug/Sept OTA hit, and a bunch of ppl lost their keys (me included) as well as a few people who used unrevoked to root.

Stuck on lock screen...too many password attempts

I work at a AT&T retailer and I have a customer who bought one for his ~14 year old son Friday night. I set up his Google account and wrote down the credentials for him to remember.
He came in today and was stuck at the lock screen you get after too many login attempts. It asked for either the secret question or Google account information. I used the paper I wrote with his login info and entered it in, it didn't work. I go to the secret question part and it asks for his mothers maiden name which I don't recall ever setting up...in either case the answer didn't work. I believe a factory reset will work but I don't know how without being able to go into settings. Is there a button combo I can hold down when booting to boot into some sort of system manager that would allow a reset?

All android phones are diffrent, every make HTC/Samsung/Sony/etc have there own partition structure, so although rooting/modding diffrent models of the same brand of phone is simlar, going from one make to another is quite diffrent By the way, sorry i called you a thief before. But you can never be too sure on the internet, people will say anything to get what they want
You could try this link: http://matthewhollander.com/locked-out-of-your-android-phone/
Also, I agree with jonnyredcorn, in my experience, customer service in the US normally consists of trained monkeys who parrot corporate lines without actually knowing what it means. I'm pretty sure I could walk into a verizon store (my provider) and ask anybody working there what adb is, or what a script is and be met with only blank stares.
So in short, thank AT&T guy for actually caring about what you do, you're one of few.

I think, starting with GSM phones, but with digital phones in general, you can no longer manually program phones; all phone programming is done over the air. But, since this is Xda, maybe someone knows how to insert that information thru a file in the OS.

Unlocking Help

I just bought one of these off ebay locked to AT&T. I've tried three different unlock services and can't get this phone unlocked. First two said they could not even do it. The last one gave me an unlock code which did not work. They informed me that they get codes directly from the HTC supplier and if that code did not work I would be unable to unlock this phone ever.
I know modding this phone is at its early stages but does anyone think I'll be able to do an unlock similar to the One S in the future? or better yet anyone have a reccomendation for an unlock service. Any advice would be appreciated, I'd hate to resell it over something so basic.

if 2 vendors said they could not unlock it, its a good possible that it cant be unlocked, most vendors get them directly from HTC or At&t,
That method works with this phone partially , i say that cause i can do the strings n -8/ etc etc etc, and i see my IMEI, but i dont see the *Unlock_code*
could be possible i got the phone already unlock and reason why it doesnt show, or they didnt but the unlock code in the phone this time..
it would be nice to see others try and see if they get results, at least if others do see the *unlock code*

I did buy a code from them, they gave it to me, i never used it so i can't say for a fact this will work, but it depends on if its worth $15 to try.
Have you tried the htc dev way?

Thanks to all that responded. I'm going to try and give AT&T a call and see if I can get the code from them. I saw in the One X forum some reported success. If that doesn't work then I'll be patient and start getting this phone ready for new roms in development.
I currently have a Galaxy s 4G and in comparison modding this HTC seems more complicated than I remember compared to my Samsung.
I'm new to HTC, so in which order do I need to do these things? Thanks again
Root, Unlock Boot loader, Recovery, Super CID, -S Off
Unlock bootloader, root, Supercid, s-off, flash custom recovery, backup, flash custom rom

Bootloader unlocked. What is the best method to root. I'm pretty sure I saw only one thread and I did not see any feedback in regard to either method. Thanks again
I'm actually curious about the best root method for this phone as well.
Currently the is one in the Android Development section in this sub forum that reads "Depracated".
I just have failed to see an alternative.

Thanks for pointing that thread out must have missed it. Any way, it was easy and it worked.

if 2 vendors said they could not unlock it, its a good possible that it cant be unlocked, most vendors get them directly from HTC or At&t,

I tried to see if I could use the the One S method, like you I don't see the unlock code, but I do see the IMEI. One thing I noticed is that the date 01/26/13 is listed in two places. Do you see that as well? Isn't that the date it becomes illegal to unlock your phone?

Just means the unlock code was in the phone this time, and that don't matter now unlocking phones is legal once again.
I'm not sure I follow, I am still locked to AT&T. There does not appear to be an unlock code within that block like the One S. In regards to the date 01/26/13, I see that in the results when I run the command in terminal emulator. I think its odd that date in particular is included in the block. The legal part of unlocking the phone does not concern me.
Update!!!
After several failed attempts with different unlock services I finally got my phone unlocked. I'm not sure why none of the codes worked but thanks to CID and S-Off threads and also the config.dat files sieempi creates I was able to do it. Thanks for everyone's input!
Glad you got it all figured out.

If anyone is having issues getting the unlock code just contact me. I have done 2 and this one is a keeper. Giving it a test ride. It might be slower than other services but so far 2 of 2.
Service is not free and depending on the kind of user it might be different price. Only pm because this is not sales section.
