It'll never happen. All you can do is do a nand backup using RA 1.8.0 to backup your wimax partition. The way keys are signed/encoded is a one-shot deal. Done at the factory. Though at the depot level they (HTC) reflash the phones with new everything during the remanufacture process.

I think I deleted my Android back up anyone have one I can use??

It doesn't work that way unfortunately - you can't use someone else's nandroid backup because the RSA keys in their wimax.img are different than yours. They are specific and unique to each and every Evo. I sold my Evo because my WiMax RSA keys got hoses and purchased a brand new one. I'd suggest doing that if you don't have a nandroid backup that was made through Amon RA recovery.

Ok so Sprint said that to get it to work again they have to flash it will that brake the root?

Sprint cannot AFAIK replace your 4G keys. That has to be done by HTC, and HTC only since they are the holders of the master Verisign key(s). Also any reflashing by HTC, or Sprint will remove root.

Oh well that's what she told me lol

Id trade root for 4g any day. Considering I'll.just root again when I get home
Does any one know of you can add issurance after 3 months? Or can I get it replaced free under warranty?

Not a very honest thing to do... Please, this is not an attack on you, furrelkt. It's a message to everyone. It just seems more and more people are doing this. Everyone knows when you get into rooting/modding you are taking a risk. If you trusted some random person on the internet that you do not know and flash a radio and break your RSA keys, that is your fault. Giving Sprint the liability for your actions gives liability to all of Sprint's stakeholders. That includes everyone on these boards. We, as a community, need to start instiling a sense of pride and ethics into ourselves. Without it, we just corrupt eachother and take away from what this community is all about.

Sprint will simply backup and flash your phone and run it for tests. They will then look at your MAC and see that you have corrupted your Wimax files.
At this point if you have insurance, you will pay $100 as a warranty return.
Or with no insurance, they will offer you to buy a new phone. But remember that you still have a very functional phone just no 4G. Really 4G is patchy and uses the resources of your phone poorly. I use it but mostly don't.
Download CM6 for Evo, flash your favorite kernel and enjoy the experience.

I agree and disagree at the same time.
I will agree that if you start flashing files of unknown origin to your phone without really knowing what you are doing then you deserve what you get.
At the same time though -- this particular instance is a 100% software issue that can be resolved in 5 minutes once an EVO is back at the factory. True cost to HTC or Sprint is next to nothing outside of some frieght and paying some kid 10 dollars an hour to run EVO's thru an automated restore process.
I hosed my 4G RSA keys, but have not gone to the sprint store to try and swap because my EVO is pristine and just like the day it came out of the package. I take care of it dearly. I have the fear that if I were to get a refurb and back to square one, whatever unit I get would smell like ass, be scratched or dinged up, and some other kid would get my flawless phone after it's reflash.
I was never a heavy user of 4G anyways, it's in DFW, TX however I live about a mile outside of the nearest bubble of 4G.
Either way -- yes it's sneaky, but it's not as costly or "evil" as one might think if you are returning a phone that is physically 100% good.
Trying to get a new/free phone because of physical neglect though? that's cause for an ass whoopin'

[Q] 4G: How is it being damaged?

Hello everyone,
I live in Indy where we don't currently have 4G and don't anticipate on getting it anytime soon.
However, I keep seeing threads pop up where people have flashed a rom or done something that breaks the 4G capability.
Does anyone know how this is happening? I'd like to keep my 4G intact just in case I ever get the chance to use it. Have played with several roms already. Phone came with Froyo and did the downgrade root method.
Thanks!

there is no 4g support on aosp roms because the htc code for wimax is not open source. cyanogen only uses open source code in his roms and it is being reverse engineered at this moment. all the other sense roms should have working 4g w/ no problems.

Well, I'm definitely not "in the know" regarding the 4G, but I would assume ROMs do not have the correct drivers or settings for the 4G.
However, if you do not think you will be getting soon, why not simply "lose" 4G ? Should you get 4G in your area, wouldn't flashing to an official ROM "fix" the 4G again ? That would of course require you to reinstall all your stuff, and make all the settings the way you want them again, but that's only a few hours of work usually.
For example I saw a thread about someone who went from CM6 to Fresh and 4g won't obtain a MAC address. I did the same thing. CM6 to Fresh.
Someone responded and said he'd have to return the phone for replacing.

Hey fellow Sprint Evo user from Indy. Lets not worry about 4G in Indy, that won't come anytime soon considering Sprint can't get 3G implemented across Indy.
Here's how it happened to me....
I had my first EVO and I played with 4g before I rooted and rom'd it. After flashing a rom (Stock 2.2 rooted) it worked fine.
Then I had to replace my evo... so the replacement came, I opened it, and immediately rooted it. It wasn't even activated yet, and I did not play with 4g. After flashing Fresh 3.1.0.2 I noticed 4g wasnt working. I checked my MAC address and it was the same as under the battery, but for some reason my phone would not get past the "scanning" stage.
So... here's what I did:
I flashed RA Recovery and wiped everything and flashed to the latest OTA (HTC 3.26.651.6) which can be found here. After that I started playing around with my 4g, and got it to work. Then I flashed Fresh 3.2 and my 4g still works.
Someone had recommended I delete my tree.xml file which I never tried... a complete wipe did that anyways.
Anyways... sorry to make this long. Just chipping in what I have found. I hope it helps.
Yeah I'm not entirely worried about 4G. I just don't want to do anything unknowingly permanent. I tend to sell my phones on eBay when I'm ready to upgrade and a 3G only evo wouldn't be worth much.

the only permanent 4g damage you can do is to wipe the RSA keys. nobody seems to really know how this happens. it happened to my evo and i had never even rooted before.
Yeah my RSA certs got wiped; had an issue one night flashing a ROM and latest WiMax, things didn't wipe right and all hell broke loose, ended up flashing the WiMax radio twice and that seemed to do it. Someone else mentioned this here and that seemed to do it for me.

yeah, i read his post at first like that too. when he said "that seemed to do it", i think he meant that is what wiped the rsa keys. but can we get clarification?
sprint basically needs to create a tool that restores rsa keys for the evo. i understand they have this for their 4g data cards already. i'm hoping they do this so i don't have to return my phone (which is otherwise perfect) for some effed up refurb.
EDIT: oops, didn't realize a pg 2 had appeared. so no rsa key fix here...move on...

are you within 30 days of purchase? if not, how did you get sprint to send you a new one? the CSR i spoke with told me they don't have the option to order new and when a replacement is ordered you will get refurb if they have them and new if they have no refurb. also, do you pay the sprint insurance? i think that factors into this as well. i pay the $7 insurance.

right, i agree that it falls under the manufacturers warranty and i am also dealing directly with sprint but they will not guarantee me a new phone as replacement. it's the hit or miss thing i described above. i called a corp store and they said the same thing. in fact, they said they had refubs in stock so i would walk out of the store with a refurb. i asked you about the $7 thing because i'm wondering if their systems treat the replacement differently depending on whether you pay it or not. i was literally told there is no way they could order me a new phone as replacement and as far as sprint reps go, this one sounded more "with it" than others. have you received the phone yet? is it really new?
Well, dude said it'd be new ... am waiting 2-4 business days as they didn't have any in stock at the store. He made it sound like if they had one in the back he'd hook it up, but they didn't. Am assuming it's going to be new. If not, I just hope I don't come up with some other issue if it is a refurb. Have had bad experiences with refurbished - uh - things in the past.
I didn't want to press my luck and ask if another Sprint store in the area might have any in stock, thus I could head elsewhere ... figured I'd just let it all play out. Time will tell though if it's new or not. As said, as long as I have a phone that works I wouldn't really mind a refurb. But I'd prefer a new one ...
right. i share the same opinion. prefer new over refurb. and i'm hard pressed to go the refurb route now with my only issue being non-functional 4g.
let us know what you end up with...
Yessir, will do.
Got the new phone, everything went swimmingly (do people really say that?) and it appears to be new, guy said it was new, not refurbished. Will have to check when I find the post that detailed the quick way of checking.
People were extremely helpful, 4G is back baybaaaay but also soon to be gone. But, I noticed I didn't have an SD card, not sure if he was supposed to have taken mine out and put it in, alas I just walked out without checking. Sat down with a beer and noticed and had to go back up there. All is well in the world, all is well.

[Q]How can Sprint tell if your phone has been rooted?

I just unrooted my phone back to stock because I'm thinking about taking it Back to Sprint to see if I can get a replacement for it, since my WiMax stopped working.. How will Sprint be able to tell if my phone has been rooted or not? By files on the memory card or something in the phone itself? Also, do I need the insurance plan to get a replacement? Hoping to get some answers from people with experience in taking back their Evo, after losing their RSA keys..
Thanks for your time.
I would say the super user application but I honestly don't know.
from my EVO using XDA app.
The SuperUser whitelist app in the market?
If you have unrooted back to stock they won't be able to tell. They won't look at your sdcard, but if you are worried about it back everything on it up to your PC and then wipe it before going in. About the insurance thing, if you have TEP all repairs or exchanges are free, if not it will cost you $35 unless it is a lost or stolen, water or physical damage or something like that then you will need insurance or pay full retail.
Okay, so without the TEP, it'll cost me $35 to exchange it at a Sprint location?

Correct sir.
Just make sure you turned you S back to S-On and flashed back to a stock RUU. So boot into your hboot and check to top for that S-On. Make sure you clean up your SD card just in case too, would be suspicious if they look and they see an rom zips or rooted app folder lol

The RUU won't turn the hboot back to s-on. You have to flash the unrevoked s-on zip and then run the RUU to fully unroot your phone.
So I've got a dilemma.. Like, I wanna go get a new phone, so I can have 4g back.. But I'm going over what I actually ever used 4g with in the first place.. It's not like downloading or streaming music over 3g is dial-up slow or anything.. And downloading apps from the market doesn't take forever either..
So this is kind of an unofficial poll..
Should I take my phone back and get it replaced by Sprint, and then root it, make sure to back up my WiMax Keys, and run the sweet CM6.1.2 with 4g?
OR
Just root my current phone again and cruise along on 3g?
Like I said, I hardly use my phone for anything other than taking pictures, or listening to music.. And thus far, I haven't noticed a quality decrease using Audiogalaxy over 3g..
So guys, what should I do?

Then that settles it.. I'm re-rooting my phone tonight, and rocking out with some CM6.1.2.. I might even try some others, like the MIUI.. I have noticed some stellar battery life with the newest stock update, though.. Of course, that could be because my 4g isn't always on anymore.

I think losing your RSA keys itself is a clue you were rooted. If you have a tech who knows what to look for, they'll know. If you're lucky, you'll get a tech who doesn't know what to look for, but my understanding is that if they diagnose it as missing keys, that's a problem that isn't happening to people who aren't rooted.

4G's very nice to have available. Can you live without it? Sure. But you are paying extra for it (despite what Sprint tries to say). Also think about the resale value of the phone, if that's something you care about.
I'm technically not paying for 4g(employee line).. So I'm not worried about that.. My main concern was someone finding out after the fact, and trying to bill me for the full amount of the phone.. Plus, I can always save up for one from Craigslist, or eBay.. Or just wait for the next big, awesome phone to come from Sprint.. I will say this, I like the feel of the Evo Shift, but it's still an inferior phone, even if it does have 4g.

Well, if the reason his 4g isnt working is because he messed up his keys while trying to root or flash, the warranty wont cover that.

[Q] Proper way to sell rooted EVO

So I put my EVO up for sale on CL and got a lot of responses, one possible buyer said he would take it next week.. The buyer wants me to keep the phone rooted. Would I just flash a rooted stock ROM then call Sprint to deactivate it? This is my first time deactivating a rooted phone so I just want to make sure everything goes fine, if this guy shows up at all..
I would just sell it as is if you do not find someone sooner
Swyped from my Orange Peeled Synergist EVO
Yea the sooner the better.. The buyer has actually kept in contact with me since I put up the ad so that's always a plus.. I think I had 20 + replies when I sold my iPod but only one of the people who replied actually kept in contact.. So there's nothing different/special I would have to do prior to the sale?

Ok cool thanks for letting me know!
Proper way? Money gets placed in your hand, Phone gets placed in new owners hand. Part ways with a smile.
I guess the only real tip was already said, he will need a Sense ROM that allows for activation (# codes typically).
What I would do would be to flash something like Fresh or the stock rooted OTA and let the new owner worry about changing ROMs later.
Also remember, that if you want to keep your phone number, to port out first. If you call and cancel the line, you will lose the number. Or if you are just swapping phones but staying on Sprint, do an ESN change to the new phone you want to use. This will allow the old phone to be transferred.
And finally, if you owe money on the old phone (say you ported and owe an early term fee) the new owner can't activate until your bill is squared away.

Anybody willing to give up their Wimax RSA keys

I've had my evo since launch, and have tried the various root methods. Of course, being on the bleeding edge, I managed to erase my wimax keys...would anybody who doesn't use their 4g be willing to give up their keys? I realize this is a shot in the dark, but I just moved to an area with awesome 4g coverage and I'm pissed to discover that I wiped the keys out. Contact me via PM if interested, and we can discuss details.
did the same thing to my first evo. sorry to hear, man. how would you restore the key back into the phone anyhow?
I thought the keys were specific to the phone? Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the only way to restore was with a backup from your own device. You don't have a nandroid backup that includes wimax?

well if i was you, and i had insurance, i would unroot my phone. Mess up the charger port intentionally (extremely easy to do considering im on my 3rd evo from this problem) and take it back, they'll replace it for free and you'll have a brand new refurb to go crazy on lol ...its kinda sneaky but it would probably work..i know i've managed to damage two charger ports before my current evo from just everyday use and have gotten refurbs for free, no questions asked.

You can't just give away your RSA keys. I guess technically you could, but if the other phone uses your old wimax partition, it won't work. The key checker app may show that they're present, but that doesn't mean that they're functional.
I'm not sure exactly how they're tied to the phone, they may be tied through the MAC address. But I do know that the only (proven) way to get them back is to have a backup from the same device. After all of the warnings about backing up wimax I really don't see how anyone loses their RSA keys anymore.

Now that you mention it, I've got some old P2 processors with 3D Now...lol just kidding. Thanks for the info dude, that makes perfect sense how it won't be easy to just port it over. I just thought of it because I've read on a few forums from people requesting RSA keys that aren't being used and I thought I can just give it away.
Wow, i'm honestly surprised to still see my thread show up at the top of the list. I figured this would end up buried shortly after posting it.
Here's my story:
I bought my evo the day it was released, played with it for a while, then started looking at rooting after it became available. It's been too long to remeber what exactly I did at the beginning, but things change so fast around here that I think you'll understand. Somewhere in the process of F**king with radio updates, PRI updates, flashing and reflashing and so on and so forth, I managed to overwrite my wimax partition and set myself up with the dreaded wimax MAC of DOOM! Well, since I didn't have 4g in my area, I figured "who cares" and left it go. Then i decided to clean out my computer and deleted most of the "unneeded" nandroid backups since they were old and outdated and I didn't think I needed them. Oops. Now I live in a 4g service area and have discovered that pretty much destroyed any chance of getting 4g working again.
Sooooooooo....I unrooted my phone, took it to the store and told them my 4g was broken. They sent me a refurb and everything's working great now. I would like to thank the community for being supportive and for making everything here possible, but a word of warning to n00bs...read the instructions, read them again, read them once more, and then read them again. And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS keep your backups.
I don't feel bad about essentially lying and telling them it's the manufacturer's fault. My first evo had dark spots on the screen, and I had to exchange it and never got my $100 rebate. So everything works out in the end.

Rofles... Hope you have several hundred years to crack that... Yeah RSA is the keeper of the keys. Even hTc doesn't have the master key just the console to create them for phones that are in production. Those are very old threads you had to be looking at. Probably about a year ago when the Aug/Sept OTA hit, and a bunch of ppl lost their keys (me included) as well as a few people who used unrevoked to root.

Well I decided to search the forum for a thread talking about my concern, instead of creating a new one...and on another note, being without my Evo is like a junkie going through withdrawls...1 more day...just 1 more day...

Switch black for white?

I've been having off and on issues with my E4GT screen and would like a replacement. Ive been living with it since february, but it's getting very annoying for such a beast of a phone. Is there any way I can switch it out and get a white one? I do have the tep insurance if it matters. I'm in the Dallas area. Please PM me if you think you can help
Chances are they'll send whatever refurb is next in line.

Since they are two foretaste model numbers, they will send whatever is attached to your account. Your best bet would be going to a local store and trying to persuade a rep to help you out... But chances are you'll be leaving with the same model that is on your account.
Good luck
Jason

I'm doing this same thing. My wife wants a white one now so I'm trying to figure something out.
I figure if I throw enough of a fit about how Sprint owes my a** something in order to make up for their lack of any mentionable data speeds while I still pay every month for 'premium data' - a white E4GT swap for my wife is the least they can do.
Otherwise I'll just cancel my contract with no ETF due to them failing to hold up their end of the contract. Or they can upgrade us both to a SGSIII when it comes out so I can have the speeds I was promised with LTE and 1x Advanced.
All I need is a tech!! I spoke to a 3rd party sprint rep and they said it can be switched with either, its basically up to the tech. Is there any one at all in the Dallas area that would like to help a fellow XDAer out? (i would be more than happy to bring a donation to a cause of their choosing )
btw I do have the ted insurance, so would that provide any help in getting a white replacement more easily? I dont want to pay the $100, but im almost willing to at this point. hence the "donation" not being an issue
I need help with this too but I live in NJ :/

Sprint rep, Sprint rep, Sprint rep!
o nvm i forgot i dont have a mirror app
bump. I would really like to get this resolved by the weekend
I already told you what you need to do.
You also have to remember that being a technician is our job, not strictly our hobby. We have to adhere to policies. I personally wouldn't swap you just because you asked, my SRSS frowns upon that.
The best thing to do is bite the bullet, drive to the store, and take whatever is given to you.
I understand what youve told me, however it is difficult for me to leave the office again and go through the hours of bs just to end up with someone looking at the thing for 20 min and saying nothing is wrong or I need to get a battery (yes, someone told me my screen and buttons malfunctioned due to my battery). This is not the first time I have done this and I am fed up to say the least. I know more about these devices and this network than 80% of the people working at the stores I've gone to.
Replacing the device is the hard part and the color change is a bird id like to kill with the same stone. All I was looking for was assistance from a fellow member to stream line things and get me the customer service that Sprint should be striving for. God knows their data speeds and innovation aren't going to save them.
I'm sorry for the rant, it was not directed at you. Ive been calling Sprint for weeks about separate issues and I was trying to take this issue on by myself. If it comes down to it I will bite the bullet and deal with them the old fashion way, but that is my last resort
Depending in what custom ROM you're running (sorry just assuming since you're on xda, if not it doesn't matter) if you type *#0*#0 on the dialer it brings up a diagnostic menu. One of the tests in this menu is a line drawing test for the touchscreen. If you can see it consistently messing up in a certain part of the screen that's one of the easiest tests we have to verify touchscreen issues and a good way to make sure the tech you talk to isn't just going to say sorry we can't verify the issue. And as much as it can suck if we can't reliably duplicate the issue our options are pretty limited as far as repair/replacement goes.
As for the color issue, I may be in the minority but if I have the parts in and someone comes in and asks nicely, I don't mind swapping what color someones screen/housing is of there's actually a problem

tried to do the dialer and it wont let me input the last 0. i think the hashes are the start and end of a code, so nothing can go after them
Yea when they sent us the code that's how out was written but now that I think about out out does just jump into the menu as soon a you hit the second #. I think it only works on completely stock roms though, I just tried it on calks el29 and no joy

tried on calk2 1.6 and no go. idk why it would only be on completely stock. calk practically is
An easy way to tell, for me, is dragging down notification bar, if it gets really choppy in a certain area, then you definitely have a spot that's out. Doesn't always work, but easy to tell. The dio menu, I am pretty sure it only works on completely stock roms with EL29, I have not tried on any ICS leaks though. I am currently running CM, so obviously, doesn't work lol.

I have had a Sprint rep tell me that a charging issue that my old Hero had was due to a bad cable. So I bought a new cable(not from sprint) and had the same problem. Took it back and they said it was the battery. So I bought a new battery(not from sprint), and had the same issue(returned the battery after. The last issue they said was that the charging port was loose, but they didn't want to fix it because they didn't want to ruin the internals of the phone.
I have hardly ever gotten good service by a rep in a Sprint store. I have gotten good service over the phone though.

hahahahaha..
I'd cancel your contract in a heartbeat.
It's a cell phone, there is no reason to have a sense of entitlement. If you don't like your data speeds or whatever, cut ship and go elsewhere. But don't even try that bull****.
If you really want a white one shove a flat head in your charging port and break the pins ( made me cringe when I seen my buddy do it) automatically a replacement cause we can't fix them. Then go to a 3rd party preferred retailer and when they go to order it just ask nicely for a white one. As long as you have TEP is all free
