I'm currently at home, on WiFi and 4G is on. I'm bone stock, not even a two days old. But yet randomly in different apps and tools I see network unavailable issues. I see it most frequently in Facebook and S-Voice.
Also, unrelated....
Can I use ROMs on my SIII? If so, which ROMs work well? I would also like to make sure it still has TouchWiz as I like the UI it provides .
EDIT: I'm not seeing it a lot in Google Play. This is really starting to annoy me.

I would recommend going into your carrier. If you are having issues on a brand new stock device, your phone may be defective. Have you had any problems with any other phone on that carrier?

How did you purchase the product? You can take it back for an exchange and explain what's going on. If you purchased it through a private individual, it's more than likely still under warranty as long as you haven't gotten it wet and it still is running stock (flash counter is still 0), you can send it to Samsung for a replacement.
I've never heard of anyone experiencing issues with a bone stock s3 like this, which really leads me to believe it may truly be a defective phone you will have to exchange.
The only other thing I could think of is if there is a delay in porting your number to your carrier if this is a brand new carrier. If you, however, have had this same carrier for a while then that is certainly not the case.
On your side note: Yes you can most definately flash custom ROMs to this phone. You can use the following links to see a list of compatible ROMs and features.

I purchased it through Amazon Wireless. It was upgraded from my previous iPhone 4 which I had no problems with. I did have to change my plan though.
The problem happens but usually if I refresh it will start working again. It'll happen only 1 in 3 times but extremely frequently in the Facebook app. I haven't really installed any apps besides Chrome and Facebook.
Even though it wasn't purchased at AT&T, could I still take it to them? Or would they be clueless?
They might be able to assist, but more than likely you would have to deal with Amazon.
Try this to see if it works: shutdown the phone, remove the battery, replace the battery and start the phone.
If not you will need to try to do an exchange unfortunately.

Done. Oddly enough, I'm not seeing it anymore. Weird that it seemingly fixed it. I will post back if it happens again.
sometimes it happens, a lot of things can be fixed that way it seems. If you do experience it again, I would recommend contacting Amazon at that point. =p Good luck =)

Also, is it true I can update my Galaxy to jellybean? I'd like to do so. I'm currently on version 4.0.4.
Yes you can. ATT released stock 4.1.1 JB or you can flash a custom ROM like CM10.0.0 for 4.1.2 JB or if you are experienced cm10.1 for 4.2.1 JB.
CM10.1 still has some kinks though so you may want to wait if you want a stable experience and stick with 4.1.2. =)
If you want to update Stock try Settings->About Phone->Updates. If it says no updates found you can update through Samsung Kies.

My apologies, I've been running a custom ROM so I didn't realize AT&T won't offer an OTA (Over the Air) update for JB. You can follow this guide to get yourself up and running on AT&T's Official Stock JB: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?faq_id=FAQ00050358&fm_seq=55362
Quick word of warning >> If you update to JB 4.1.1 using the method I showed you, flashing a custom recovery (needed to install custom ROMs) will trip your flash counter. Of course installing custom ROMs will trip your counter anyways. Just a word of warning in the event you don't wish to trip your counter.
The flash counter is used by Samsung in the event your device needs to be warranted for any reason. If you trip the counter, Samsung can tell your device was modified and will void your warranty.
BUT... There has been development in an app called Triangle away that can revert your flash counter so it looks like it has never been modified.
I wanted to warn you of this in the event you wish to root and install ROMs. Especially with your network problem in the event you need to exchange your phone.

Many can, but for best purposes, why? You can have a lovely rooted, stock version that I believe they just updated. Otherwise look at qbking's vidoes on Odin/Heimdall to stock. No real reason to, unless you plan to sell or repair it.
When was this update?
And lately i havent been receiving any texts and was worried that it may have something to do with being rooted? idk..
and i know nothing about rooting/unrooting so when the day comes and i have to use my warrenty, id like to know how to unroot it.

Check the dev section, but not receiving texts may be an issue way easier than going back to stock. Also, be sure to state anything you've played with that makes you think it could be attached to s/u status. Lots of people will be happy to walk you through a variety of things that won't make you lose all your data.
honestly i love the whole rooted idea. I rooted my phone to use a screenshot app..but i feel like i can do more with it...the thing is..idk how. Did you flash a Rom after you rooted? What instructions did you go by? Be aware, it's 12:33 here and your questions may get differred to everyone else until morning. If you're on certain main Roms, you might be able to easily flash to either a new Rom or theme with little effort. This is where it can get tricky though and retracing your steps out loud will help people walk you to what you need until you get more acclimated to searching and "shopping" for what you what in here. remember your thanks, donations and verbal support, people like to help here

As long as you have a backup of your data on your card, your phone will live on as it did when you last clicked the wrong button. Bricking is everyone's biggest fear, but mostly because it's an inconvenience not a sentence.

The Root is right. The word "brick" is used too much. I can only remember a couple of people actually bricking a phone thus making it useless. 95% of the problems can be fixed with Odin. I didn't know a damn thing 6 months ago. I had to Google "rooting your phone." Now I test ROMs,themes, and kernels for developers. I could never go back to stock now. Rooting really frees the phone to make it your own. Flashing ROM's, themes, and kernels is easy and if you have any questions, there are people like me that are glad to help. Also, qbking makes great videos if you are a visual learner or want to see the process before you do it.

Alright members of the I957 community, I know it's been a long time coming, but I'm proud to (finally) present to you a custom ROM designed specifically for our devices: Contingency! There are a couple of things I need to rattle off in this description before I can get down to business. 1. Due to some error in updater-scripts causing incredible lag with CWM flashes, this ROM is Odin-based only. If you aren't very good with Odin/need a refresher, look down below for a quick little tutorial to help get you started. 2. Due to my lack of an actual cellular data account for this device, it's difficult for me to tell you whether or not the data is working... I'm 99% it is functional in this build, but in future builds I may need a tester to discern for me.
Features & Added Apps
Da_g's OC Kernel
CWM Recovery
Rooted
Zipaligned
Deodexed
Bloat Removed
Build.prop performance tweaks
System Tuner for OC/UV
Titanium Backup
Go Launcher HD (If you're a Touchwiz hater)
As you can probably see, this is a very bland ROM right now; I just had my first successful Odin flash of it yesterday, and the testing lead all the way up to today.
Stuff To Add/Do (Taking Suggestions)
Extended Power Menu
CRT-Off
Bravia
Xloud
Edit Name in build.prop
Put data monitor back in
Theming
Due to my little experience in the world of Tablet modding, I could really use some help as to what you guys would like to see in future builds of Contingency.
Instructions For Odin Flash (It's In Red Because It's Important)
A data wipe is optional, but I recommend it.
Download the .rar of Contingency from the link below
Extract out "Contingency vX.tar" to a place you'll remember it
Open up Odin
Navigate to your Contigency.tar and load it into the PDA slot
Make sure your Tab is in download mode (Power Button + Both Volumes)
MAKE SURE RE-PARTITION IS UNCHECKED!!!!!!111!!!!!111?!?!?!!11!11!%[email protected]^#
Hit start
Go grab a snack, sit back, and watch that progress bar
Screenshots
Look at your Stock Tab... Now back to me. Unfortunately, I'm not your stock tab, but that's what Contingency looks like.

if you want wifi hotpost use quick tether from market. it activate usb and wifi tethering.
I'm gonna charge mine up for a little bit and try this rom out later. I only got 30% charge currently.
Bought mine used a couple of months ago. Still has an active SIM in it from the original purchasers account. Guess the termination fee was too steap or they needed the cash and decided to live with the $30 a month
I mainly use it on wifi but will test it out on ATT network to see. I just pop it on once in a while to see if it's still active. Just checked and it was!
If it's a nogo I can just use Odin with the original rom from ATT/Samsung? I already have it downloaded as I've use it twice to reset mine.
Waiting for ICS sucks!
Does this still have the ATT data monitor app?
Thanks!

No issues with flashing the rom. First bootup was a little scary as it stayed on the Android animation screeen for a while. Wound up doing a factory reset once up and running to clear up some issues. Seems to get more responsive after it sits for a while and after a couple of reboots. Had a couple of issues with updating the app store and maps but it seemed to work itself out after a couple of tries.
ATT data is functional for those who are interested. I don't live in a LTE area but it's getting closer by the month.
ATT data monitor app is gone. No biggy but was nice to see how much free data I have left....Hoping original owner keeps my data plan going!
Active applications widget can be added but only clicks when touched. Guess the app is no longer included....No big deal just thought I'd mention it.
Looks like there is alot of stuff to play around with as far as tweaks go. Not sure what they all do but guess I'll check them out later.
Thanks again!
I'll let you guys know if I see anything else that is worth mentioning.

Now that you mention the AT&T data monitor app from the tablet, (poster above) I was trying to get the app working on the galaxy note and I failed. I installed the apk from the tablet to the Galaxy Note via Titanium and manually... I see the app and the widget on the Note perfectly, but I am unable to link it to my phone data plan... Any ideas? I was able to get to a screen were is asking for some credentials that are out of my hands... I guess they are AT&T credentials for my account in order to set or link the monitoring app...

It would be best to save a copy of your nandroid backup somewhere safe like on your computer just in case you need it later. Not sure if Odin will nuke it or not. My tab was pretty much stock when I flashed it today as I used Odin to restore the stock rom a couple of weeks ago. If I remember correctly a folder in root is no longer there. Not 100% sure what it was called but I'm thinking it was preloaded or preinstalled. Not needed anyways as it was ATT apps/bloatware if I remember correctly.
I'm not sure about the rom failing and nandroid back thing. Maybe somebody else knows forsure.
I'm thinking if you for some reason don't like this rom you'd have to maybe use Odin to flash the stock rom back first, then install the kernel you were using and then move the nandroid back to the tab if it was deleted and then flash it back.
As soon as there is a link to download the original Stock AT&T ROM I will be installing this ROM...

Using the latest rom from Task650 2013.02.23 I'm not able to connect to some secure sites. One example is https://stripe.com/ but there are plenty of others, but no names off the top of my head (just want to point out it's not unique to Stripe, happens with about 1 in 4 sites I've tried to use.) I ran into this quirk with older versions of this rom as well. Happen on a clean install, both stock browser and Chrome.
I'd potentially post in the development thread but where I'm a newbie it won't let me, sorry about that!
Any tips on how I might resolve this would be greatly appreciated. Or if you know where I might look to find a more verbose error log, that would be pretty awesome as well.
Thanks!
Edit: can't explain what happened, but after logging in to a Google Account on the device and installing a handful of apps/updates everything works as expected. Case closed, for now. If I figure out what happened I'll come back to post about it for others who might run into it.

I'm able to get to the above website, as well as all the SSL sites I visit, credit cards, bank, mint, credit scores, ect.. without fail. I'm also on the 2/23 build from task. when flashing sometimes things can happen like this, even on a clean flash.
You may have to Odin back to stock to do a complete fresh reinstall of tasks ROM.
unrelated, I had to do so with a recent LTE issue that is now fixed.

Thanks for the reply RPelham!
I have jumped back to older versions of the rom but it still happens. I wipe caches, format /system and proceed with a clean install each time. The checksum matches on all files used so I'm relatively sure I'm downloading what's expected.
Your comment about LTE perks my curiosity. Although not on LTE myself, now that I'm home I've I connected to wifi and this issue isn't presenting. The only time I run into problems is when trying to connect to secure sites over cellular data.
My data plan isn't limited or being misused so I don't suspect they've throttled the connection. Not lucky enough to be on any unlimited data plan and no high usage coming from me. No high connection counts... really nothing all that notable. E-mails and calendar sync mostly.
Does Bell muck up HTTPS traffic? I would call them up but I feel tier 1 technical support isn't going to be much help until I narrow it down more.

Well he was quick to reply and inform me my carrier is unsupported. Yeesh, like... really quick. You would think he lives here on xda. That aside I decided to try the slim rom and I hit the same issue. So it's not unique to task. However, I'm completely stumped at this point. It would be sweet if the browser would give a better error message! Keeping my eyes peeled for others with the same issue and possible solutions, but thanks again for the advice so far!
First off I am a very experienced modder but what I really want to know is ?
Being in Canada with a Tmobile model will I even get OTA from a different carrier?
When I use Kies to return to factory can I claim for all intents and purposes that it's a 1:1? Or can files, spyware and odd files find there way into areas like preload, efs or other ?
I don't like the look of stock 4.2.2 and miss my cyanogen mod tools...
But Does bluetooth and speaker phone get messed on the s4 with cyanogen mod and all the dev's roms? like it does with SO many other phones ?
And since I pointed that out is there some other weird anomaly that us rooters need be aware of ?
Please respond quick im getting board with stock and your answers could be my freedom :fingers-crossed:
I wont forget to thank those who can help my tough questions..
Yes you can go back to stock.

Searching can be pointless as many of those questions are unanswered... I wish I could take away points for that answer : Geez

Those questions you are referring to which are unanswered are simply yet to be found.
So perhaps it might be a good idea to post a lot of answers instead of so many questions! LOL
Why the heck do they have a Q and A section if people just sit around and tell other people that unanswered questions are a problem :
Wish people would just add info where requested instead of clogging the thread.... GEEZ people simple questions here :
1) IS THERE A BLUETOOTH/SPEAKER PHONE ECHO in MODDED ROMS WITH THE S4 ?
2) will other carriers transmit the OTA upgrades ? Have they in the past ?
3) After root is there a way to insure 1:1 return of all data to EFS, PREBOOT or other areas that would suggest for some unrooted is better...
-----------------------------------
Gotta love the answers so far first response don't ask questions search endlessly, and the second is simply don't submit unanswered questions to Q and A !!!!
HAHA
is there a way to delete sloppy posts ?
I can see your going to get lots of help. LMFAO

Or in your case a lack there of. Don't you have something better to do than fill threads ?
The s4 phones have good compatibility so far. Except once you start getting into 4.3 roms, for now, wifi glitches occur.
As far as who gets which updates, i dont think anyone knows yet since it's only been 6 months there is no reliable history to tell. I'm sure you'll get some update but it's not going to be timely and it's not going be frequent.. at best ~4 times for the life of the phone. I say fly solo.
About returning the phone, the only thing u have to worry about is the "knox counter" which isn't included in most roms.

Wifi just doesnt work. Some people did somethings to have some functionality... but it's not something you want to mess with
You should stick with 4.2 for a couple more weeks until tmobile releases 4.3, then it will be really solid.
As far as OTA, i dont really know because i dont use them. And your case is so rare that i think you shouldnt count on it. Why do you want ota anyways you can flash a new stock ota freely. Those are prominently available on here.

Is this wifi bug on all 4.3 4.4 roms or are there some working ?
That is a MAJOR glitch BTW I don't think I will Root : which brings me to the second answer I want to stay stock because with no 4.3 (with wifi) what incentive is there to even root ?
Can I use Kies to update without the need of a OTA update once available ?

You have to check for the OTA manually through your settings. If you are on a custom rom or kernel, it won't allow you to update. In that case, you simply Odin back to stock and then go into settings and update. This time the OTA will work.
EDIT: Rooting won't cause problems with your WiFi... It's an inherit ROM bug. Stick with 4.2.2 and just root.

Just root. You can go back to stock and many cm Roms and aokp work perfect. You can always find what's best for you and sounds like you want to root anyways.
4.3 twiz is the only one with WiFi glitch. Aosp is fine....

The latest cm nightlies seem like a good fit.
Additionally, I know people are having luck with wicked roms in Canada

Well right now wifi breaks for everyone but 4.3 is coming to us (the usa tmobile customers) in a week, so you will be able to flash it and have working wifi.
Why wouldnt you root? There is no downside even if u dont want to flash roms. You can have root on ur stock rom and do hundreds of new things. Greenify, xposed, wallet, backups, call recording...

I would wait to install any Android 5 rom on anything. Its VERY Buggie on every Nexus device that has it.. So i would assume atleast wait until 5.1 or above is Release and see how it goes. My Nexus just freezes for no reason. other times it gets so slow its nearly not usable ..Yes its on a STOCK Factory image from google.
Been running this one for about 12 hours:

Using the 12/12 update.
no major trouble, only downside so far are no rear camera, and screen cast doesn't find my Roku, not sure if that's a bug or not.
Missing some of the customary CM personalization, but for an early rom, seems pretty stable.

Weird. I keep hearing that but my Nexus 5 is smooth and fast and totally trouble free. I sideloaded the OTA back in November when it was released and haven't had a lick of trouble at all. I'm also totally stock, not rooted, no custom recovery.

I Think its some kind of sleep or cpu throttle Bug.. I can be using it just say on google plus. All of the sudden the screen will freeze . Sometimes go back to lock screen. Only fix is to push power button on and off to toggle the screen a few times then its ok.. It Does seem to Run apps faster But seems the UI Is a bit slow.. I Thought i had a bad flash so i re- downloaded from GOOGLE And fastboot flashed totally stock same outcome.. It Could be my Device who knows. But i have seen others complain as well. Lately i do not use my nexus 7 much anyway. I have a note 10.1 2012 Version .
Other thing I do not like the new drop down notification thing. The two sided one was MUCH Better. I think the old list type settings menu was better as well. Someone needs to remind google we are not Children or icon yuppies.
Anyway i think my comments here are off topic as this is about the note 2. My note 2 is running stock rooted 4.3. I just see no need for custom rom on it at this time...
Thanks for your Opinion. as said maybe its JUST Me..

Thanks for the tip Was just coming to take a crack at that kernel, then I noticed the new rom by Team UB so I decided to give it a go. It's a decent, well rounded rom, and the rear camera works.
That brings my issues down to one, still can't throw screen to Roku, but I can't blame the developers for that.
