First off I am a very experienced modder but what I really want to know is ?
Being in Canada with a Tmobile model will I even get OTA from a different carrier?
When I use Kies to return to factory can I claim for all intents and purposes that it's a 1:1? Or can files, spyware and odd files find there way into areas like preload, efs or other ?
I don't like the look of stock 4.2.2 and miss my cyanogen mod tools...
But Does bluetooth and speaker phone get messed on the s4 with cyanogen mod and all the dev's roms? like it does with SO many other phones ?
And since I pointed that out is there some other weird anomaly that us rooters need be aware of ?
Please respond quick im getting board with stock and your answers could be my freedom :fingers-crossed:
I wont forget to thank those who can help my tough questions..
Yes you can go back to stock.

Those questions you are referring to which are unanswered are simply yet to be found.
So perhaps it might be a good idea to post a lot of answers instead of so many questions! LOL
Why the heck do they have a Q and A section if people just sit around and tell other people that unanswered questions are a problem :
Wish people would just add info where requested instead of clogging the thread.... GEEZ people simple questions here :
1) IS THERE A BLUETOOTH/SPEAKER PHONE ECHO in MODDED ROMS WITH THE S4 ?
2) will other carriers transmit the OTA upgrades ? Have they in the past ?
3) After root is there a way to insure 1:1 return of all data to EFS, PREBOOT or other areas that would suggest for some unrooted is better...
-----------------------------------
Gotta love the answers so far first response don't ask questions search endlessly, and the second is simply don't submit unanswered questions to Q and A !!!!
HAHA
is there a way to delete sloppy posts ?

The s4 phones have good compatibility so far. Except once you start getting into 4.3 roms, for now, wifi glitches occur.
As far as who gets which updates, i dont think anyone knows yet since it's only been 6 months there is no reliable history to tell. I'm sure you'll get some update but it's not going to be timely and it's not going be frequent.. at best ~4 times for the life of the phone. I say fly solo.
About returning the phone, the only thing u have to worry about is the "knox counter" which isn't included in most roms.

Wifi just doesnt work. Some people did somethings to have some functionality... but it's not something you want to mess with
You should stick with 4.2 for a couple more weeks until tmobile releases 4.3, then it will be really solid.
As far as OTA, i dont really know because i dont use them. And your case is so rare that i think you shouldnt count on it. Why do you want ota anyways you can flash a new stock ota freely. Those are prominently available on here.

Is this wifi bug on all 4.3 4.4 roms or are there some working ?
That is a MAJOR glitch BTW I don't think I will Root : which brings me to the second answer I want to stay stock because with no 4.3 (with wifi) what incentive is there to even root ?
Can I use Kies to update without the need of a OTA update once available ?

You have to check for the OTA manually through your settings. If you are on a custom rom or kernel, it won't allow you to update. In that case, you simply Odin back to stock and then go into settings and update. This time the OTA will work.
EDIT: Rooting won't cause problems with your WiFi... It's an inherit ROM bug. Stick with 4.2.2 and just root.

Just root. You can go back to stock and many cm Roms and aokp work perfect. You can always find what's best for you and sounds like you want to root anyways.

Well right now wifi breaks for everyone but 4.3 is coming to us (the usa tmobile customers) in a week, so you will be able to flash it and have working wifi.
Why wouldnt you root? There is no downside even if u dont want to flash roms. You can have root on ur stock rom and do hundreds of new things. Greenify, xposed, wallet, backups, call recording...

jesus christ really? ... you really asking this? wow man how did you root your phone without at least reading once out of the many many times that toast has said DO NOT run official updates....wait for the dev community to incorporate any updates....will it break root? maybe maybe not, will it stop you from being able to root? maybe, maybe not... you can do whatever you want with your phone...also we have a search function on these forums...well there may be hope for you yet, at least you posted in the right forum section.....
Taking official updates is risky...it's usually only a day or two behind that the devs of other ROMs (DC included) incorporate the fixes from the official fix into their ROMs in a manner that is safe for use (safe from losing root, etc).

Many can, but for best purposes, why? You can have a lovely rooted, stock version that I believe they just updated. Otherwise look at qbking's vidoes on Odin/Heimdall to stock. No real reason to, unless you plan to sell or repair it.
When was this update?
And lately i havent been receiving any texts and was worried that it may have something to do with being rooted? idk..
and i know nothing about rooting/unrooting so when the day comes and i have to use my warrenty, id like to know how to unroot it.

Check the dev section, but not receiving texts may be an issue way easier than going back to stock. Also, be sure to state anything you've played with that makes you think it could be attached to s/u status. Lots of people will be happy to walk you through a variety of things that won't make you lose all your data.
honestly i love the whole rooted idea. I rooted my phone to use a screenshot app..but i feel like i can do more with it...the thing is..idk how. I wish i can get themes on my phone but everything seems so complicated. I probably wont unroot now...but since we're both here, any ideas on how to add themes to my phone? and maybe even reset to the default theme.

Did you flash a Rom after you rooted? What instructions did you go by? Be aware, it's 12:33 here and your questions may get differred to everyone else until morning. If you're on certain main Roms, you might be able to easily flash to either a new Rom or theme with little effort. This is where it can get tricky though and retracing your steps out loud will help people walk you to what you need until you get more acclimated to searching and "shopping" for what you what in here. remember your thanks, donations and verbal support, people like to help here

Nothing is complicated about putting ROMs or Themes on your phone Its developing them that is Complicated!
Follow the link in my sig to qbkings videos and you will be wondering why you thought it was complicated to begin with!

As long as you have a backup of your data on your card, your phone will live on as it did when you last clicked the wrong button. Bricking is everyone's biggest fear, but mostly because it's an inconvenience not a sentence.

The Root is right. The word "brick" is used too much. I can only remember a couple of people actually bricking a phone thus making it useless. 95% of the problems can be fixed with Odin. I didn't know a damn thing 6 months ago. I had to Google "rooting your phone." Now I test ROMs,themes, and kernels for developers. I could never go back to stock now. Rooting really frees the phone to make it your own. Flashing ROM's, themes, and kernels is easy and if you have any questions, there are people like me that are glad to help. Also, qbking makes great videos if you are a visual learner or want to see the process before you do it.

Hello all,
Long time lurker, just wanted to share an issue I had.
I've flashed nearly every ROM that is out there since I got my SGS3 and have never had any GPS issues, however this weekend I used it without a problem but Tuesday all of a sudden turning it on and off still produced nothing...not even the increased battery drain from having GPS on.
Here's what I did in hopes that it can help someone or at least give some knowledge as there wasn't a lot out there when I searched:
1.) Restored a previous Nandroid that I knew had a working GPS --- Result = FAIL
2.) Searched XDA and Google...found a video with some USSD codes for the dialer, etc.. ---- Result = FAIL
3.) Pulled battery and sim card, etc... --- Result = FAIL
4.) Flashed Wicked as I know that is a stable and highly used ROM. Everything great but still no GPS. ---- Result = FAIL
5.) Found a suggestion about clearing cache in google framework, Maps and uninstalling Maps updates. Result = FAIL
**however Play Store wouldn't let me update Maps when I rebooted as it said it wasn't compatible with my phone. No clue why.
6.) Finally I decided to do Triangle Away and Chainfires unrooting procedure to get back to unrooted stock. ---Result = SUCCESS!
Not sure what about it made GPS come back, however the next step will of course be to root again and see if there are any issues.
Hope this helps someone who ends up in my situation. Feel free to PM if you need more details.
Thanks to all
Edit: Just as an FYI -- when I rooted again, GPS was still back and I've had no issues since.
Thanks man, I like threads like these because you never know when you may need them. Same issue for me. On CM10 ROMs,I have trouble locking onto GPS, and the fix for me has been downloading GPS test and running that before using something like navigation.it's a minor inconvenience but it works great
Overall, if you have something borked, no matter what rom you use... no matter how many times you wipe... odin back to stock, should fix it always.

True, but honestly, that doesn't always work. I have a second SGS3 Pebble Blue 32GB, and it won't play nice with Lean Kernel/Ktoonz, unless it's the touchwiz based kernels, whereas my white 16GB runs all of them flawlessly. They were rooted and booted the same way, and they both have the same GPS issue.
Out of curiosity, what's the chainfire way of going back to stock?
Also, do we have any guides here/on youtube that detail how to odin back to stock. I'm gonna give it a go on the blue one again/cross my fingers hoping I made a mistake, hence why I want a guide lol! *Searches*
thanks for the info jpk17!

I love this thing!
The only time my gps was ever messed up was when i used a sprint leak JB rom and had the gps turned off. Flashed a couple roms after no gps whatsoever. Odin'ed with 2 or 3 different versions and still couldnt get the gps back.
Finally I flashed another JB rom based on the sprint leak and turned GPS back on and everything started working again. Lesson learned on using sprint leaks lol.
Had op's problem myself before, and full wiping and Odin'ing back to stock actually didn't work.. what did work though was after full unroot, doing tmo ota update.
Who knows, this info could help someone out as well..

So by now we all know that Jelly Bean 4.2 has been released and has already been pushed to a lot of Galaxy Nexus devices around the globe. Myself, like many others, have a Galaxy Nexus on the Verizon network. I'm just as eager as anyone to get the 4.2 update but I do realize it's going to be a while before Verizon officially has the 4.2 update for us. What are my options as of now and the near future? Are there any ROMs I can use with the Verizon network and run 4.2? I'm currently running 4.1.1 JRO03O, so would I have to find a way to update to 4.1.2 before I could update to 4.2? Also, if I am able to find a ROM that will get me to 4.2, what features do I have to worry about losing? Many features of my phone I hold close, so I'd like full disclosure on which features could be compromised. I really appreciate your time for helping me!
Also, please be as detailed as possible with your responses - I imagine there are many others that view the forums like myself, looking for the answers to these questions without having to read through multiple 100+ page threads, finding answers bit by bit. I just want to have a little assurance in the ROM I'm loading onto my Nexus. I need to make sure I don't need to run a 4.1.2 ROM first or if I can go straight from 4.1.1 to 4.2. etc etc Thanks guys

so you want to be spoonfed because you cannot read the title of the threads?
if you're replacing the system (which you are if you're flashing a rom) it doesnt matter what version you were on.
there are a couple 4.2 ROMs out already. they are all a little finnicky. my suggestion is to wait a couple days for the bugs to be worked out. as far as i know, some of the things not working last i checked was.
google location, go Google Now isn't working
photosphere was crashing in the gallery (although i was able to use it just now)
swype typing was not working (i have a 4.2 transformation package that i flashed and got it working)
overall, it is pretty stable with very few issues.
as for features missing from what you currently have or want, i dont know. its just Stock android 4.2 for right now.
lock screen widgets
photosphere
quick settings
new clock app
new Google apps (calendar, gmail with pinch to zoom ect)
its all there.
Flash CM10, it has a built in update checker so you will be good to go when they drop a 4.2 nightly.
Thanks for all the information! I guess I'll wait a week or so and see which ROM is out at that point and has the best reviews for stability and functionality. And yes, I can read the thread titles... but when you click on thread after thread and they were all started MONTHS ago, they aren't much help for an update that came out days ago. And also, none of the thread titles say anything about 4.2... sure, they say JB, but JB is 4.1.1, 4.1.2 and 4.2 so that doesn't help much either. That's why I asked. Also because in the VZW development forum it says DONT ASK QUESTIONS so... where else would I go? Isn't that the point of a Q&A forum? To answer questions and not go around being a smart ** to people just looking for help? Like seriously?

That is IF you want CM and the potential bugs that come with nightly builds.
does anyone know that status of Miracast on the Galaxy Nexus?
Guys,
This might be a longshot, but I'm hoping someone might be able to give some advice.
I have the Epic 4G tough and had it flashed over to straight talk. At first it worked good(since Dec), but the 3G data speeds were never really there. Was getting a max of around 200-250k/sec, but things were pretty solid. Others around here with ST and flashed ST phones have been able to get 1.5+ Mb/sec speeds.
Did have a problem with the signal just disappearing and then coming back a few seconds later, even while in an area where I had 4+ bars. Just Poof, gone and then it would come back.
The phone did an OTA update a month or so ago and things were still working the same. I think a couple of ther updates might have happened in the past week because I heard my phone reboot a couple of times for no reason that I can find.
For about the past week though things have went all to crap on it.When 3G does connect I'm luckt to get 16k/sec. Still works great over wifi.
Here is my baseband version:
S710.10 S.FL24
Android version 4.04.
Does anyone have any advice that might help me out?
Thanks in advance.
I'm assuming that since you flashed over to ST that you are rooted? If so, have you updated your modem, prl, profile? There is also a thread on here where you can change your 3g settings using your MSL code, that may help you. From what I've read, sometimes OTA will jack with the 3g signal. Try those things and see if that held. You may have to flash different modems depending on where you live to find the best one. You're running ICS, I'd start in rwilco12's repository and flash the latest ICS modem, update prl and profile, and see if that helps. Good luck! Hope it works out

Unfortunately I had the phone remotely flashed by flashedphones.net and it isn't rooted.
It does have the newest ST PRL on it.
Could you possibly post a link for the MSL thread?
Looking over the repository and reading the thread about it, I see mention that there are ODIN 1 click modem files and someone mentioned that these will root the phone as well. Does anyone know if this is correct? If so that would be a great added bonus for me.
I think I can still flash a modem to the phone through ODIN even if it is not rooted?
Thanks!
Yes, you should be able to flash a modem without rooting using odin. If you can boot into download mode, Odin should flash just fine. However, in order to change 3g settings, you need to be rooted. You have to use terminal emulator(on the linked guide, there may be other ways) which requires rooting to have full control.

Here is the guide to get MSL code. Let me know if it works or not. And hit thanks if you think it helped at all! Good luck

Thanks done on both posts man. I really appreciate it.
I need to look through the root guide to see if there is a way to get this thing rooted without losingthe settings, etc.

First thing you'll want to look for is making a nandroid backup. The saying goes "if flashing breaks it, a backup should restore it".
You'll specifically want to look for recording your mms/mmsc/apn settings. Basically anything carrier specific settings that you can edit via the ##data# menu. Make sure you write them down and that way you won't have to hunt for them.
You'll need to know what your msl is as well. There are threads to help you get that.
When it comes to flashed over carrier devices, mms usually breaks and has to be edited for settings.
Check out threads that deal with, for example, Boost flashes and check their issues and expect the same to happen and you'll need to fix.

That's the first thing you do after rooting with a custom recovery.
One step at a time. Do your research, read and ask questions and you'll be good to go.
Tip, use Google to search the forum, the forum search can be confusing at best.

Pp is right, finding good info can be difficult sometimes. Here are 2 good threads to read and know.. (If you get stuck, let us know)
This is older but still is a good resource for understanding.
[TUT] What Is Nandroid And How To Use It [Complete Guide] [VeNuM]
A newer thread talking about the JB TW leaks and creating a Nandroid.

Grrr,Pancho you're too da*n fast for me! I actually knew the answer to that one. Throw a brother a bone will ya? Ha. On a serious note, Pancho is right. If you don't know what nandroid is, you're not ready to root. But once you do, you'll have the ability to flash a custom recovery that basically allows you to make a mirror copy of the current ROM you have. That way, if you mess things up, you can always reflash the custom recovery cwm, restore the ROM, and start over. Read, read, read. The folks here have encountered and answered about every type of issue.

Just had someone local take a good look at my phone.
Looks like it was a bad flash from the start.
Another flashedphones.net victim.
They want me to send it in to them so they can "fix" it.
The hell with that. I'll eat the money and get it fixed locally so that I have someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Hmmm, that sucks. Well, if you are the least bit comfortable with doing it yourself, you can guaranteed find something to help you on here. The instructions are on here, just read, read, read, and ask the right questions. Good luck!

Thanks man.
Luckily this local guy is pretty good. I'm pretty sure he will let me watch so I might learn some things. Not interested in doint other peoples phones, but would like to learn so I can do my own stuff.
As far as flashing ROM's/ modems I'm comfortable with that. Just need more experience with the changing over to other services on them.
But hey, at least I have a pretty decent JB rooted rom on it now.
Has anyone played around with the radios and seen which ones seem to be pretty good in weak signal areas?

That you do(have a good jb rom, if you have jellyverse that is ). I'm using GB27 modem on mine. Works fine, but no modem I have will get goods signal in my office. Awesome that you'll get to watch live and in color. Let me know how it goes and if you need anything else. I may not know the answer, but can certainly find it or reach out to someone who does know. Enjoy your weekend
