[Q] install rom - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Play store issue: google "gapps for gingerbread", get the cm7 zip from the cyanogenmod wiki, then install from recovery.
For more apps, install the cm7r2 hboot if you're s-off.

[Q] New to Android

Hi
I m new user for Android
i had bought HTC desire
can anybuddy tell me from where shud i start ?
i m basically symbian user
Now switch to Android as everybudy these days crazy abt Android
So i want to get to know these things as well
i want to install themes
want to format the phone as well
I tried to Eraze the data by turing off the phone and pressing down Volume button while turned onn but it did't worked out
coz i had installed metamorph its saying some files could not be extracted and setup. Make sure u have enough space in/system ( i m freaked out )
my phone is up to date 2.2 Android Froyo
If u whant to use metamorph u need to be rooted....but u can use home replacements from market, and your phone will have another....alure let's say, and for making a reset to your phone just go in settings. And then start to read a LOT on this forum coz there are stiky threads and not only, about the phone and how to start with... Cheers
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
The first thing you have to do is to read the manual book first and explore all the "standard" things you get.
All the settings, installing apps from market, testing apps, installing apps from PC or HTCSync, etc.
After you think that you have done all you can do with your "Standard" Desire, you will then try to install as much as apps you can...at this point you will realize..
"SH*T! I have run out of memory, I wanna have more memory"
Then you will delete apps if you wanna put new ones...and...
"SH*T! I wanna keep everything!"
...and so on...
Then, I don't really like the sound of the music on the earphone
"I need a DSP manager"
....and so on...
"SH*T! Is that all? My Desire can only do that?"
........
The time to learn how to root your phone and to flash custom ROMS has come!
Nice Advise thankz i m doing tht from now on

HTC Desire memory issues

Hi there,
I have a HTC Desire, and its telling me I have low space, so I have deleted everything that I can, including old messages..
Now I am trying to get into my gallery to delete photos/videos and it comes up saying:
Your phone is low on storage space. Please free some space before using this application
I also tried accessing the gallery through camera, and it tells me the same thing
Removed battery for ten seconds then restarted no help
I dont understand what I can do next.
When I restart the phone (which I have like 10 times), it comes up saying it cant identify my time zone... The phone has not been dropped and is in a very protected case
Can someone please help me? Its my partners phone I have borrowed and I'm scared I have broken it!!!
thanks in advance

Hello there welcome to xda
What you are getting is the biggest problem the HTC desire has is very little install space, Your better of rooting your phone and installing starburst ROM witch will give you 2GB internal memory.
If you dont want to root try install Quick App cache, this wil remove alot of unwanted data.
Read into Rooting
Always backup
Install custom rom

Yes you do need root for it to clean everything for you, but you can clean each app one at a time with out root theres a good chance that you'll have your browser or another app using alot of MB without you even knowing about it. DONT DELETE APP DATA UNLESS YOU WANT TO.
I think I will wait for my partner to have a go with it, so I dont mess it up!
Do you that that will fix it?
Could you post your system info? you'll find it in settings, about phone, software information.
Or you could look here your self
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
Its so you can download the stock rom you have now, just incase you ever need to go back to stock. this is only if your think about rooting.

To tell you the Truth, it will free some space but you will be back wanting to free up space again and again
Thats why its best to Root your phone, dont just rush into it have a very good read on this site even watch youtube lots of video's on there showing you have to do it.
Once you feel you know what your doing you'll be fine Always remember to Backup, download your Stock ROM from shipped roms. then pick a custom from from the dev part of this site

Download this and keep it saved to your PC, its just for future incase you ever need it
If you ever root your phone and you end up not wanting root you can install this and it will make your phone back to stock unrooted.
Running out of memory is the main reason why I rooted and S-Offed my Desire.
If you have done those, there are plenty options of solving the running out of memory problem.
A2SD+, A2SD + custom NAND partition, Data2Ext, etc.
Beside those you will be also get these as bonuses:
1. Faster and smoother Desire
2. Longer battery life
3. Various UI from various ROMs (Sense, New-Sense, Plain, MIUI, etc.)
4. DSP manager witch doesn't come with the stock ROM
5. Overclock, underclock, under voltage, etc. settings
6. UOT skins
7. Adblock to block unwanted ads
8. Flashing addiction
etc.
OK...you have got your original signed ROM just in case you need it in the future.
Now it is time to root.
Download Android H-Boot driver for your PC and Unrevoked software.
Learn how to root and flash ROMs (no S-Off first nor Nand partition modification, learn more and do those later)
What is it that is eating up my memory...?
I'm NOT asking for more memory for installing apps - I just want to get the same amount of free memory back that I got after a fresh factoryreset and reinstalling and using all programs the first time...
I'm running stock HTC 2.3.3.
Just four days ago I reset my phone and installed 29 apps ran all of them so that they were all ready to use exg Google goggles isn't ready to use before you have answered a few questions...
And I had 29,19 Mb left!!! Brilliant!!! :-D
Today I had to remove a 3,28 MB program because I were below 15 mb and at this moment there is only 16,29 Mb left.
All programs that I can move to sd is moved, all cache is cleared using "1 tap cleaner" (is the a better app for this...)
Why is it that I have lost 13 mb???
Please help because I really would like to find the cause of this...
Installed apps:
1 tap cleaner free
Adobe flash 10.3
Angry birds
Bubble
cardiotrainer
chrome to phone
convert - unit converter
documents to go
dropbox
es file explorer
facebook for android
gmail
goggles
google sky map
handcent sms
flashlight
maps
my perfect egg timer
my tracks
notes (htc widget)
rockplayer lite
shazam
smooth calender
tv2 nyhederne (danish news station app)
Tv2 superliga (dansih football)
tv guide
valg2011
Dmi (danish weather)
youtube
(By the way right after the reset before I installed any apps it said 125 Mb free memory for install)
Well, space is eaten by apps' data (not only cache), crash logs et cetera. For example, when i first install DEX (Romanian dictionary app) it "eats" some 1.26 MB after being moved to SD. When i first run it, it creates another ~5MB of data. If you remove said data, it will just be created again on next run, so don't try that as it's useless.
Yes I know that programs "creates" more mb but that was also what I tried to write when I said that all programs were running one time when I still had 29 mb left...?
So what is it then...?

Hello khulay028,
First of all, Welcome here and good choice. Before I had my Wildfire S I also bought an X8. I was not satisfied. No native multitouch, cm7 soaked the battery etc.
Of course you can root your wildfire S and install custom roms. As a newbie I will provide you with some links. Reading is important. And if you use the search you will probably find everything you want.
so let's begin:
1. You must unlock the bootloader
My tutorial here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432199
2. You can now root your device and install the custom recovery clockworkmod using this handy tool from eoghan2t7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431969
3. to manage your memory read carefully here. LinkSD is a good choice

4. A good starting point for everything else is the index thread

Issue may persist even after Link2SD'ing everything
Howdy,
Even after I rooted my phone and Link2SD'd everything I was STILL sometimes running low on internal memory. Here are a two apps that I currently use (after much trial and error) that really helped (I'm still new so I can't post the links, however both can be found in the Play Store):
SD Maid, using the "Optimize DBs" functioning, by its self, cleared several megs
App Cache Cleaner, a very simple, yet effective app that does what it says on the tin
Also, after you follow theq86's advice and unlock, root, and load Link2SD, I'd recommend deleting and then reinstalling the following system apps: Google Maps (this one was a MAJOR space hog), Google Voice, Adobe Reader, Gmail, YouTube. Make sure all of your Link2SD'd apps say "Linked -> SD Card". Also make sure each of them have their "Link application file", "Link dalvik-cache file", and "Link library files" listed as "(already linked)". I don't recommend Link2SD'ing the market (Play Store) just in case something happens to your SD card.
Good luck and good hunting.

Kalumnus

Problwem with Runny Rom

Hello everyone!
I don't have acces to the dev. forum so i describe my problem right here.
When i try to install any of runny roms (no mather which version)i allways have a problem. After installation, when i go to market to download my apps, I get a message about a not enough space on my phone interial memory. I have cm7r2 hboot, a lot of free space on device. What can i do?
please help!
Market cache is too small, try moving it to ext.
Yep, your cache-partition is too small. Here is the solution:
http://miuiandroid.com/community/threads/script-to-use-custom-hboot-with-miui.5280/
Although it is thread from MIUI, but it will work for other ROMs as well.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Another solution is to simply download the app marketfix (I can't post links yet): play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.felipearon.marketfix&hl=da
I too had problems downloading World of Goo because of the cache-size.

It would appear as though this android commander app has broken the market links. Best course of action would be to use titanium backup and redo the procedure. If you don't want to root either devices though, try redownloading from the store, and pray it doesn't wipe the user data.
thank you guys
I dont want to root coz of the warranty void issue..
I had a wildfire be4 this(Still have it).. nd even though i know what all can i do after rooting i jus cant take the risk of loosing my warranty on such an expensive phone..
anywais getting back to the topic
-I dont have any major user data yet..i mean i jus bought the phone yesterday.. i have hardly had my hands on it
-The APK's that im installing are the backup(Also via android commander) of my apps (Just apps,no data) of my wildfire
-Is there any good app/software which will backup jus the apk's on the phone along with the market links so that i can install it via sd card??.. coz downloading each and evey app again could be a pain in the a*s??
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-My phone's software version is 1.26.720.2... nd im get the option of a system update.. should i take it??..coz i remember that when we got the 2.2 update for the wildfire.... mostly no body downloaded it as it updated the bootloader.. nd there was no way to crack the bootloader.. so again, should i take this update?? its of 33mb
If you go to google play store using your pc and log into your account you can then send apps direct to your phone via wifi.
Check the my apps tag to see what you have previously downloaded.
Can someone guide me on the FOTA updates??

We don't have S-Off, so we don't know which bootloader (if any) will get S-Off.
As you know, if you upgrade bootloader, you cannot downgrade it without S-Off.
Your choice.
Do the system update and once you login with ur PC and go to play store. try installing one app from there and then all apps will be automatically start showing on your device app store
