Hi there,
I have a HTC Desire, and its telling me I have low space, so I have deleted everything that I can, including old messages..
Now I am trying to get into my gallery to delete photos/videos and it comes up saying:
Your phone is low on storage space. Please free some space before using this application
I also tried accessing the gallery through camera, and it tells me the same thing
Removed battery for ten seconds then restarted no help
I dont understand what I can do next.
When I restart the phone (which I have like 10 times), it comes up saying it cant identify my time zone... The phone has not been dropped and is in a very protected case
Can someone please help me? Its my partners phone I have borrowed and I'm scared I have broken it!!!
thanks in advance

Hello there welcome to xda
What you are getting is the biggest problem the HTC desire has is very little install space, Your better of rooting your phone and installing starburst ROM witch will give you 2GB internal memory.
If you dont want to root try install Quick App cache, this wil remove alot of unwanted data.
Read into Rooting
Always backup
Install custom rom

Yes you do need root for it to clean everything for you, but you can clean each app one at a time with out root theres a good chance that you'll have your browser or another app using alot of MB without you even knowing about it. DONT DELETE APP DATA UNLESS YOU WANT TO.
I think I will wait for my partner to have a go with it, so I dont mess it up!
Do you that that will fix it?
Could you post your system info? you'll find it in settings, about phone, software information.
Or you could look here your self
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
Its so you can download the stock rom you have now, just incase you ever need to go back to stock. this is only if your think about rooting.

To tell you the Truth, it will free some space but you will be back wanting to free up space again and again
Thats why its best to Root your phone, dont just rush into it have a very good read on this site even watch youtube lots of video's on there showing you have to do it.
Once you feel you know what your doing you'll be fine Always remember to Backup, download your Stock ROM from shipped roms. then pick a custom from from the dev part of this site

Running out of memory is the main reason why I rooted and S-Offed my Desire.
If you have done those, there are plenty options of solving the running out of memory problem.
A2SD+, A2SD + custom NAND partition, Data2Ext, etc.
Beside those you will be also get these as bonuses:
1. Faster and smoother Desire
2. Longer battery life
3. Various UI from various ROMs (Sense, New-Sense, Plain, MIUI, etc.)
4. DSP manager witch doesn't come with the stock ROM
5. Overclock, underclock, under voltage, etc. settings
6. UOT skins
7. Adblock to block unwanted ads
8. Flashing addiction
etc.
OK...you have got your original signed ROM just in case you need it in the future.
Now it is time to root.
Download Android H-Boot driver for your PC and Unrevoked software.
Learn how to root and flash ROMs (no S-Off first nor Nand partition modification, learn more and do those later)
What is it that is eating up my memory...?
I'm NOT asking for more memory for installing apps - I just want to get the same amount of free memory back that I got after a fresh factoryreset and reinstalling and using all programs the first time...
I'm running stock HTC 2.3.3.
Just four days ago I reset my phone and installed 29 apps ran all of them so that they were all ready to use exg Google goggles isn't ready to use before you have answered a few questions...
And I had 29,19 Mb left!!! Brilliant!!! :-D
Today I had to remove a 3,28 MB program because I were below 15 mb and at this moment there is only 16,29 Mb left.
All programs that I can move to sd is moved, all cache is cleared using "1 tap cleaner" (is the a better app for this...)
Why is it that I have lost 13 mb???
Please help because I really would like to find the cause of this...
Installed apps:
1 tap cleaner free
Adobe flash 10.3
Angry birds
Bubble
cardiotrainer
chrome to phone
convert - unit converter
documents to go
dropbox
es file explorer
facebook for android
gmail
goggles
google sky map
handcent sms
flashlight
maps
my perfect egg timer
my tracks
notes (htc widget)
rockplayer lite
shazam
smooth calender
tv2 nyhederne (danish news station app)
Tv2 superliga (dansih football)
tv guide
valg2011
Dmi (danish weather)
youtube
(By the way right after the reset before I installed any apps it said 125 Mb free memory for install)
Well, space is eaten by apps' data (not only cache), crash logs et cetera. For example, when i first install DEX (Romanian dictionary app) it "eats" some 1.26 MB after being moved to SD. When i first run it, it creates another ~5MB of data. If you remove said data, it will just be created again on next run, so don't try that as it's useless.
Yes I know that programs "creates" more mb but that was also what I tried to write when I said that all programs were running one time when I still had 29 mb left...?
So what is it then...?

To resolve Desire's memory issue and enable the upgrade to Gingerbread, we will cut select apps from the release. Look for status updates starting next week. We apologize for any confusion.

I'm afraid we have heaps of these threads already
our suggestion is to cut the crap (like quick office) and other stuff that is available on the market, and i'd suggest pushing stuff like stocks to htc hub so its optional not forced
Hmmm...
1. Just remove all apps, which available in Android market, we can download them for ourselves.
2. Several live wallpapers can be also removed, for example waveform, spectrum,VU meter, Many, etc.

Moving HTC apps to the Hub is a very good idea and one that HTC should really think of themselves
Any update is good, devs just need the base, im sure we will make some uber ROMS off their "release"

gets rid of the junk that the average joe or jane doesn't want too...
live wallpapers can be moved there too and installed when you wish (they could of course leave one default one perhaps)
flahplayer plugin its pretty big as well, not needed anymore.
Guys, are you giving advices to htc devs that reading here? lol
i posted my thoughts on the fb page and tweeted but i still doubt they read...
i think the problem will be what can they remove without the majority of people noticing and/or confusing the really basic of users.
like they won't be able to remove facebook without another outcry (some people probably don't know how to use market?)
OTA Update After Rooting
I just Rooted my Desire now I am running GingerVillan 2.5.
I enabled A2SD making ext3 partition of 512 MB and 32 MB Swap on SD card.
However as now the news just came out that There will be gingerbread for Desire
so as I made Full System Image using Nandroid backup, will it be safe to restore that Image and get OTA update when it is available.
They should show a dialog windows after the first reboot following the update and ask if the user want download from the market the missing app, flash player, facebook, maps, youtube...selecting the apps to download..like cyanogenmod does after the first installation
the problem is that in some country some apps are not avalilable in their market..
but..i don't think they will do this..because after removing and restalling that apps will lost its data, setting, preferences ecc..So probably they will just remove some of their app, wallpapers, weather animation, ecc (separate download on htc hub for example, in case of sense 2.1 )

Seriously, spare yourself the hassle and stay on the custom ROM. The stock Gingerbread won't be a revolution anyway and a2sd will come more handy like you have it now. If there will be any updated libs, ROM devs here will integrate them anyway, so you'll just flash a updated GingerVillan.
Hello guys, i am having a problem, last night my Adobe flash player automatically got updated, it was previously a system app which was done with titanium, after it got updated, i integrated it into the rom like before.
however i lost 3mb in the process i tried cleaning the dalvick catch and i used sd maid also to delete any dead apps but both did not find anything to clean.
I tired uninstalling it and installing my previous version via titanium backup, but sill i have lost 3mb, Any ideas to how i can retrieve my internal space back?? now I have turned off the automatic updates. thanks.

Were you having the previous installation of Flash player in the sd card?
No, it was originally from the market.
Seriously, you are complaining about 3 MB?
Nevertheless, back to topic: When system apps are updated, the updates are always installed to /data partition. Don't know why, but this gives you the possibility to uninstall updates, which could not be done if updates were installed to /system.
SwiftKeyed from CyanogenMod with Transparent XDA App
Whenever my internal space starts to get low and some of the applications have been updated more than once I uninstall them and the re-install, it seems to be that my phone is storing data after every update so updating straight to the most recent version seems to take up less space.
I dont know if this is 100% correct but it seems to work for me.
Its not about 3mb, thats one case, if several updates happen then you will have no internal space. I dont have a table for my desire, after all my main apps installed im left with a limited 25mb of internal space so every mb matters. il try that aswel TheDarkenedPoet though. thanks for replying
OK I have a Virgin Mobile USA Wildifire S. I have it s-off and rooted. Now what files can I delete so my phone can run safely so I can free up space? I removed most of the bloatware but I still don't have enough space.
Why is my contact storage taking up over 20mb. I don't have that many contacts and FB is set to only sync with my current contacts in the phone.
For some reason I'm constantly getting force closes for just about everything when I open it the first time. I tried fixing the permissions but after that nothing will run everything forces closes all the time.
Can anybody help me with these problems?

I can't remember everything I removed. But it was all that dumb software like games and stuff that come with the phone.
My contacts have photos but on my old phone the storage was never above 5mb and I had more contacts on that phone.
No but I will try that.
I did download an experimental ROM....... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367701] ...........this worked great until I noticed my mms wasn't working so I made a backup of that until the problem could be fixed.
So I reverted back to where I had these problems listed above and I will now try your third recommendation.
Anybody know what to do to fix mms issues?
try backing your contacts onto your Google account........I had the same problem with the contacts storage.....backed my phone contacts to the Google account and voila!!!!it took only 3 MB

Been done a long long long time ago when I first got an android. LOL
inconsistency in battery usage stats
Guys, I came across this bug on my wfs-
the battery usage statistics of my phone (settings>about phone>battery>battery use>) "d h m s on battery" gets reset when i restart the phone.
Pls test this on your phone. I noticed the issue after 2.3.5 upgrade:
1. fully charge your phone (required).
2. wait for 5-10 minutes and check the battery stats.
3. uncheck Fast Boot from Settings>Power (required).
4. turn off the phone and switch it on again.
5. check the battery stats -" d h m s on battery" again.
Does it retain its value from step 2. or is it reset?
Once the battery level comes down to 88-85%, it functions normally and the stats persists after a restart (shows same data as in step 2).
I did factory reset but its not resolved.
Can anyone tell me whether its a hardware issue or OS related?
Mine is virgin WFS updated to 2.3.5 via FOTA.
I would imagine that It's connected to changing the fastboot option. But I can't replicate right now.

Any skins you don't use would be high on the list of things to axe. they suck up over a meg a piece.
also, if you haven't already, forcing apps to the SD will free space nicely.
in a terminal emulator do this (case sensitive)
su
pm setInstallLocation 2
now semi-everything will be movable to SD.
What I need to ask is, does it happen right after you check fastboot, or do you have to reboot to get the reset.

Just the reboot resets the stats.
Chk the screenshot, the graph starts from 90% cos I rebooted at that point.

Hi guys,
I've been using Cyanogenmod 7, and it was going very slow. I decided to completely wipe the phone and SD card and start from scratch with Andromadus Mimicry ROM. It is much faster I find but I still get the random slowdowns.
My biggest problems seem to be with the Facebook app, it slows down the phone incredibly. even when you exit the app, unless you force close it, the whole phone goes to a crawl.
I also find even if I uninstall the facebook app, I get lots of random slowdowns, like random times during the day I'll go to read my SMS and it takes FOREVER to load (go sms app)
any ideas?

Are your partitions ext4? Did you debug and follow the steps in the Mimicry OP?
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
4EXT is paid software eh? don't really want to pay for it if I can avoid it, any other way of checking??
Wheres the debug steps?
4ext is a free custom recovery, there is an app similar to rom manager that is a paid app. if you don't want to support the developer for whatever reason your choice, but you can still flash the 4ext recoverey via fastboot or a pc10img
can you get a logcat? if your slowdowns are easily duplicated then plug phone into computer, and run a logcat through adb when you are experiancing this
*facebook apps is terrible* (so is facebook)
study the op of mimcry, search the threads for similar problems.
just an fyi - mimcry is one of the best ics roms for the vision and if you are having strange slowdowns then either a bug needs to be reported or you did something wrong
(didn't fully wipe, still in ext3, etc)
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
thanks man, I tried android market and can only find a paid app called 4ext. I use clockworkmod recovery as thats what cyanogenmod 7 recommended, I have not activley done anything to setup ext4 though as there was nothing in mimcry instructions for this.
i cant easily duplicate the issue as it happens totally at random.
i fully wiped and reset to factory defaults before installing mimcry also

go into tsubus' ilwt cm7 thread, there you will find a link to superwipeg2+ext4, this will wipe all and change format of everything but sd card to ext4
don't check the market for custom recoveries, you go there for apps, look for the 4ext thread in the dev section or just google it

Please read the FAQ in the Mimicry OP. You need to find the apps causing the slowdowns and either uninstall them or wipe their data if you're restoring app data from Titanium backup.

Yep, though I would use Watchdog first to see if it alerts on any high cpu processes.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Sounds good man, just installed watchdog and will see how it goes thanks for your advice
strangely enough watchdog has not found a single problem yet even though my phone keeps slowing down every now and then, seems to be slightly less frequent now after all the apps have settled in I guess? still certainly doing it though
also one other issue I found is a program I use called AirDroid stops working properly through its web interface if the phone locks, which I didnt have this problem on CM7
Mind if i but in, but this problem is discussed and handled well in the AOKP nik3rs rom EliteMod & EliteKernel ICS* (which I highley recommend!)
But Its seems one of the problems that can cause this is bcuz you some people still have there apps backed up from there GB rom with their account and switching to ICS rom will only install the GB forms of the app from the market its highley recommended to backup data from apps in Titanum, and Install all new apps to your account and then restore data from Titanium.
Also I have alsot noticed that in 4ext sometimes Superwipe isn't always the answer Try Using the "Format All (except SDCARD)" option in 4ext it seems to clear away alot more bugs then superwipe! hope that helps..
Also try elitemods dataswap and sdext patch if you stay on mimicry!
Thanks man might have to give that ROM a try. And once again I fully wiped and loaded the ROM and I installed each application freshly from the google play store. nothing was backed up or restored so thats not the problem

Maybe I should have been more clear in my last post, Are you using SD-EXT? or data swap? and The way I have to flash is sometimes is after dalvike/cache ofcourse
1- Factory/data reset
2.-Then apply the zip superwipe (let it reboot)
3.-Then apply the FORMAT ALL EXCEPT SDCARD option in 4ext
....and just to note you are mounting everything before you wipe right?
Hope this can help.
And if not I would again highly recommend the EliteMod Rom its the best!!

Wi-Fi not working
Hello and thanks again for keeping our great ancient device alive I have, however, encountered one very unfortunate problem with the wi-fi, which connects to the wi-fi network but then there's no internet connection. I tried updating the radio to the newest version found here, I have tried installing Wifi Fixer and re-installing the ROM a couple times. On previous ROMs (stock CM 7.2 and Andromadus Mimicry (CM9.1)), the wi-fi worked just fine. Also the wi-fi router provides connection to other devices seamlessly. Do you have any idea where the problem might be?
EDIT: OK, to make sure, I flashed CM 7.2 again (both stable and latest nightly), only to find out that on this particular wi-fi network, internet connection doesn't work for my Desire Z so something's probably wrong with the router TP-Link TL-WR740N.
EDIT2: Connectify solved the problem so there's definitely something wrong with the router, even though it has the latest firmware. (And the strangest thing is that Connectify worked fine while sharing internet connection from the same router that didn't work with my Desire Z directly... WTF? )
Slow response and out of space (AlterNdromadus CM10.1)
Hi, I'm new to custom ROMs, and I'm certainly no developer, but I have been successfully running this one on my HTC Desire Z for about a month. It's been more or less fine but I have two issues:
1. My phone seems to be getting slower and slower to respond. Is that just because I'm an app addict and I have installed too much crap?
2. I'm getting the "out of space" error when I try to install or update apps, even though according to the DiskUsage app I'm using I have 110 MB free on internal storage. I have seen the fix of deleting the logs in /data/logs, but this directory does not exist on my phone! Where else should I look for old logs? What else can I try?

I use an appcache cleaner ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.infolife.cache ) and also you might think about moving apps to the sdcard.

Well, I've tried both, and I currently have 126.9mb free in internal storage and 128.7mb free on the SD card. But I still get an "insufficient space" error when trying to update apps.
What is the underlying source of this problem? And what can I do about it? It seems odd that I can't update a 50kb app when I have 126mb free.
PS: apologies if this got posted twice; I thought I responded yesterday but I don't see the other post.

try clearing the data of the play store and see if that helps.
Rats, still getting the error.
Slide unlock with pattern security
Hello is there a way how to disable slide shotcuts when I wake up my phone and skip to pattern entry? I don't want to use those shortcuts and it is just an annoyence :/

sorry out of thoughts....maybe a ROM reload.
I get that insufficient space error quite a bit - here are some things to try:
Uninstall updates for the Google Play Store through "Settings" --> "Apps" --> "All." I've had better luck with earlier versions of the Play Store, though very recent builds seem to be improving WRT this behavior.
I usually try to keep 140-180 MB free, which will be enough for most programs to update. Problematic ones are Swype, Swiftkey, Dropbox, and OneNote, which can be uninstalled and reinstalled with the later version if necessary.
I move plenty of stuff to SD with "DS app2SD Lite" and uninstall things like Talkback with "System Apps Remover (Root)." I also run "lagfix (fstrim) free" ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix&hl=en ) every now and again, which might help further.
As far as slowness - you can try tips mentioned a few pages back in the ROM threads for setting up internal swap with Turbo Boost ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145133 ) and misc scripts like Supercharger v6 which is also included in the more comprehensive "PurePerformance" mod ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2360670 ).
Some critical opinions on Supercharger: https://plus.google.com/+AndrewDodd/posts/3AaCammc2Jw
In any case, with a fast swap set up with Turbo Boost, you can reduce or disable ZRam entirely.
One Desire Z user's example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55825801&postcount=1113
I also use Amazon services & appstore, which to my regret runs in the background always and won't hibernate. Appstore / Amazon store app / Amazon Music all churning away, sucking up my precious megs and mips and is the cause for some of my own hiccups.
I also occasionally boot to 4ext Recovery and run fsck over adb shell to try to fix filesystem errors for each block device that never seem to stop cropping up. I actually have to reformat cache as ext2, then ext4 again to clear some... but that's probably another issue.
Hope some of this helped.

*sigh* I thought you might say that...
At any rate I went ahead and cleared everything off the SD card (after backing up, of course), then I ran all of the formatting and clearing options in CWM a couple of times. I also messed around with the partition size options in CWM. I didn't take a note of what sizes I chose but I went with the middle of the range options.
After flashing everything again and restoring what I could, it all seems fine again. Perhaps I missed a step in cleaning up before switching from CM7 to this ROM and left too much old info hanging around, eating up space and confusing things? DiskUsage now reports 485mb free, even though I restored all of the apps except GOBackup. Maybe the backup files were being stored in the wrong place.
Hi,
Having one old D-Z on shelf and now got inspired to flash custom Rom in it and this AlterNdromadus 10.1 seems most interesting Rom on sight, there is only one problem; can't find any download link for Rom
Could someone post a link or direct me to right place?

Lock sdcard access through USB possible if phone is locked ?
Hi,
Firstly, thanks a lot for AlterNdromadus !
I just migrated from my old CM 7.0.3 to this latest AlterNdromadus and ... ok, I should have to update earlier
I also flashed the latest gapp-light, updated my radio to latest Europe one and fixed the GPS with the recommended tool (just in case due to radio update)
Everything is ok except one thing. I set a PIN on my phone but it is still possible to access sdcard through USB cable even if the telephone is locked.
For me, it's like a security hole even if the SD card is physically accessible.
After googling the problem :
- I tried to find a "charge only" option without success (settings ==> storage ==> menu ==> USB connection to computer (path "translated" from french))
- I tried to disable usb mass storage but at least one of the three options has to be selected in the menu : USB Mass storage, PTP or MTP.
Why it is possible to access the SD card even if the phone is locked ?
Is there a way to fix this ? or a workaround ?
Thanks
P.S. Yes, English is not my native language
There is already already a KitKat Rom for HTC Desire Z. Problem with Desire Z is, that the hardware performance comes to an end, what I read in that post, so that someone went back to your 4.2.2 version. This was my experience, too, with an optimized 2.3.5 ROM. Without freezing some system apps my configuration wouldn't work on that. I am happy to be able to run a Android 4 version on the Desire Z at all to be able to install apps working only on 4 onward.
Great Rom but touch screen problem
This rom is great, But has anyone experienced touch screen problem after installing it?
I have to frequently lock on and off when my screen seems to stop responding to my touch.
How to fix it please?
Yep -- I have exactly the same problem. But I have to say that this issue has appeared after a some month of using this ROM.
